The Toyota RAV4 (Japanese: トヨタ・RAV4, Hepburn: Toyota Ravufō) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers.

It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle was designed for consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the manoeuvrability and fuel economy of a compact car. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.

For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.

In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

Common 2019 Toyota Rav4 hybrid problems

The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid 2019 has been a popular choice for many car buyers, but like any vehicle, it has faced its share of problems and complaints from owners. Here are some common issues that have been reported:

  • Starting Problems: Some owners have reported that the car sometimes won't start, especially in cold weather. This issue has been reported to occur multiple times in the winter, making the car unreliable for some owners.
  • Suspension Problems: Some 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid owners have reported clunking noises in the front suspension at low speeds when turning. This issue has been reported to occur only when the suspension is unloading over soft irregularities of the road and gets more prominent with mileage.
  • Lemon Law Concerns: Some owners have reported issues with the car that may qualify for lemon law protection. These issues include the gas tank not filling up properly, mileage dropping, and a loud noise coming from the gearbox in the back. However, some owners have reported that dealerships have been unable to find any problems with the car, leaving them unsure of what to do next.
  • Battery and Suspension Issues: According to a What Car? Reliability Survey, just 2% of owners reported issues with their 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. The battery and suspension were the only areas of concern, but all issues were dealt with in a day or less. Although only 50% of repairs were done for free, the remaining bills were less than £50 each.

In summary, the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid 2019 has faced some common problems and complaints from owners, including issues with the fuel tank and fuel system, starting problems, suspension problems, lemon law concerns, and battery and suspension issues. While these issues may be concerning for some owners, it's important to note that the RAV4 Hybrid has also been praised for its reliability and overall performance.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-05-18
  • VIN: JTMDWRFVXKD
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: MY TOYOTA RAV4 HYBRID WILL ONLY ACCEPT 9-10 GALLONS OF GAS WHEN FILLING FROM EMPTY. THE TANK IS SUPPOSED TO HOLD 14.5 GALLONS. I FIRST BROUGHT THE ISSUE TO THE DEALERSHIP IN 2019 AND THEY CLAIMED TO HAVE NOT HEARD OF THE ISSUE BEFORE. I BROUGHT IT TO THEIR ATTENTION AGAIN ON MY LAST VISIT IN JUNE 2020 KNOWING THAT IT WAS A KNOWN ISSUE AT THIS TIME- A GAS TANK MALFORMATION. I WAS TOLD THERE WOULD BE A FIX IN AUGUST 2020. THERE IS STILL NO RECALL OR SERVICE BULLETIN FOR THIS ISSUE AND IT CAUSES ME TO FILL UP WAY TOO FREQUENTLY CONSIDERING I PURCHASE A HYBRID TO GET BETTER MILEAGE.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-11-01
  • VIN: JTEBU5JR3K5
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: VEHICLE'S FUEL TANK IS LISTED BY TOYOTA COMPANY AS 14.5 GALLON CAPACITY AND, IN REALITY, THIS TANK'S SHAPE ONLY ALLOWS IT TO FILL TO APPROXIMATELY 9 GALLONS. ADDITIONALLY, THE FUEL GAUGES "MILES TO EMPTY" DOES NOT APPEAR TO READ THE AMOUNT CORRECTLY. I HAVE ALMOST RUN OUT OF FUEL ON THE HIGHWAY AS A RESULT OF THE VEHICLE'S IMPROPER READING. THE ACTUAL GAS IN THE TANK WAS MUCH LOWER THAN THE VEHICLE ITSELF TOLD ME. THE RANGE IS ADVERTISED BY THE MANUFACTURER AT APPROXIMATELY 500 MILES WHEN IN REALITY IT APPEARS TO BE UNDER 300 MILES DEPENDING ON DRIVING CONDITIONS. THIS HAS PLACED ME AND MY FAMILY IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION AS WE CANNOT ACCURATELY ESTIMATE HOW MUCH FUEL IS IN THE VEHICLE BEFORE IT IS COMPLETELY EMPTY. I HAVE SEEN THIS PROBLEM IS ACTUALLY WIDESPREAD AND OTHER OWNERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY ARE ALSO DEALING WITH THE ISSUE. TOYOTA IS ALSO STILL SELLING THE VEHICLE'S 2020 MODEL WHICH APPARENTLY HAS THE SAME PROBLEM, AND IS NOT WARNING POTENTIAL BUYERS OF THE DANGEROUS DEFECT. *TR

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-06-10
  • VIN: JTMEWRFV5KD
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: MY 14 GALLON CAPACITY FUEL TANK WILL NOT ACCEPT MORE THAN 9.9 GALLONS. EVEN WHEN I'VE RUN IT TO LOW FUEL WARNING LIGHTS, NEVER DOUBLE DIGIT FILLS. I'VE USED AT LEAST A DOZEN DIFFERENT GAS STATIONS AND SUPPLIERS INCLUDING ONE IN OREGON AND ALWAYS THE SAME LIMITATION. OWNERS MANUAL CAUTIONS AGAINST CONTINUING TO FILL AFTER AUTO SHUT OFF. WE HAVE TRIED FAST FILLS, SLOW FILLS, MANUALLY HOLDING THE NOZZLE AND HOLDING THE TRIGGER, MANY ANGLES ARE FAILING TO GET OVER 9.9! ROTTEN TO GET FAR LESS MILEAGE PER TANK THAN TOYOTA COMMERCIALS SHOW. I AM TEMPTED TO TRY FILLING AFTER THE CLICK OFF. WHAT'S WRONG WITH MY VEHICLE? IS THIS DANGEROUS SYMPTOM OR MANUFACTURING ERROR? CURRENT MILEAGE IS 2504 AND PROBLEM PERSISTS SINCE FORST BOUGHT NEW THROUGH THIS DATE. THANKS!

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-04-30
  • VIN: JTMRWRFV4KD
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I AM CONCERNED THAT THE DESIGN OF THE 'SMART KEY' SYSTEM IS SUCH THAT IT WOULD BE POSSIBLE TO INADVERTENTLY LEAVE THE CAR RUNNING AFTER PARKING THE CAR IN A HOME GARAGE, THEREBY ALLOWING DANGEROUS CARBON MONOXIDE TO ACCUMULATE IN THE HOME. THIS MIGHT HAPPEN BECAUSE OF TWO DESIGN FEATURES OF THE CAR: 1) THE SMART KEY SYSTEM ALLOWS THE CAR ENGINE TO RUN, WHEN THE KEY IS REMOVED FROM THE CAR. WITH TRADITIONAL KEYS, REMOVING THE KEY TURNS OFF THE ENGINE. WITH A 'SMART KEY,' REMOVING THE KEY DOES NOT TURN OFF THE ENGINE/HYBRID SYSTEM. THE OWNER MUST REMEMBER TO TURN OFF THE HYBRID SYSTEM. USUALLY, OF COURSE, THE OWNER WILL REMEMBER TO TURN OFF THE CAR, BUT IT WOULD BE ALL TOO EASY TO FORGET. 2) DUE TO THE NATURE OF THE HYBRID SYSTEM, THE HYBRID MOTOR SYSTEM CAN BE TURNED ON, AND NOT MAKE ANY SOUND AT ALL. HOWEVER, AFTER SOME MINUTES, WHEN THE OWNER HAS WALKED AWAY FROM THE CAR, THE ENGINE WILL TURN ON, TO RECHARGE THE HYBRID BATTERY. THIS WILL PRODUCE CARBON MONOXIDE. IT WOULD BE EASY TO DESIGN THE SYSTEM SO IT WOULD AUTOMATICALLY TURN OFF THE HYBRID SYSTEM IF THE CAR WERE LEFT IDLING, OR WITH THE SHIFT LEVER IN PARK, FOR A PERIOD OF TIME, PERHAPS AN HOUR. I BELIEVE THIS WOULD CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. IT COULD PROBABLY BE IMPLEMENTED AT LITTLE COST WITH A SOFTWARE UPDATE. I HAVE READ THAT SOME CAR MANUFACTURERS HAVE DONE THIS, BUT TOYOTA HAS NOT. THUS, I BELIEVE THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE, WHICH WOULD BE EASY TO CORRECT. I BELIEVE A FIX SHOULD BE REQUIRED FOR NEW CARS, AND THAT THERE SHOULD BE A REQUIRED SOFTWARE UPDATE AVAILABLE FOR EXISTING CARS.

Negative 2019 Toyota Rav4 hybrid car reviews

  1. Jesse Von 2025-01-01

This is a good car, but there is a gas tank issue that Toyota has not yet fixed. It is recommended that you wait to purchase until the gas tank issue is resolved. The gauge does not work properly and it can be difficult to fill the tank. Unfortunately, Toyota has not provided a timeline for when this issue will be resolved. It is important to be able to accurately monitor the fuel level in your car. Please note that this information may not be disclosed by the dealer.

  2. Claud Lakin 2024-10-11

The 2019 and 2020 RAV4 Hybrid models have a known issue where the gas tank won't fill up all the way, resulting in only about 10-11 gallons being accepted instead of the 14.5 capacity. This can be frustrating as it affects the advertised 580 miles per tankful and makes it difficult to accurately gauge gas and mileage. While Toyota has not disclosed this issue to buyers, it is important to note that it is not a safety concern. However, a defective gas tank could cause increased pressure and other non-desirable effects inside the tank, potentially compromising the life of other parts and leading to costly repairs down the road when it's out of warranty. It is recommended that Toyota recall/fix the issue and extend the warranty or buy back the affected cars. An update on this issue is that Toyota has sent a letter about a year after purchase stating that they would fix the fuel tank issue under a Customer Support Program (not a recall). Although it has been almost two years and no further communication has been received from Toyota, local dealerships have been able to fix the issue by replacing the parts. The fuel tank needle now goes to full and seems to accept more gas.

  3. Diamond Ward 2024-08-21

When I purchased my 2019 Rav4, I was promised a full tank and a 520-mile range. However, I have noticed that the range has decreased to 380 miles and the tank cannot be filled up to the claimed capacity of 14.5 gallons. It is concerning that Toyota has not informed owners or dealers about this issue or whether they plan to address it. If you are considering purchasing this vehicle for its range, please be aware of this potential issue. Hopefully, Toyota will provide more information and a solution soon.

  4. Broderick Ferry 2024-08-03

We bought our RAV4 Hybrid XSE in August 2019. Initially, we were getting around 40 mpg, but it dropped to the low 30s (around 33) shortly after. If we're gentle on the throttle, we can get up to around 37. However, we've had a few issues with our RAV4 that have been frustrating. To keep it brief, we have three issues: 1. We can't add more than 9 gallons of fuel to the tank when it's empty. 2. The radio settings won't hold, and we have to set the weather settings to Fahrenheit multiple times a day if we don't want to see the temperature in Celsius. 3. The worst issue is a random noise from the dash fans that sounds like an old AM radio. We contacted our dealership, and they took the car in once to look at all the issues. They had us return to replace the dash fans to see if that would help (it didn't). Unfortunately, they haven't responded to any of our communications since then. When you spend $40k on a vehicle, you expect more than what you get with the RAV4 Hybrid. Even small details like no lighting on the driver window controls are a disappointment. We had high hopes for this vehicle and Toyota, but we've been less than satisfied at this point.

  5. Hayden Murazik 2024-07-15

I bought a RAV 4 Hybrid in June and I absolutely love the mileage and acceleration! However, two weeks into ownership, I encountered an issue where people couldn't hear me on the phone and the GPS stopped working. I brought it back to the dealership and they initially told me that my android phone was too old, which I found hard to believe. I even tried a new phone from Verizon, but the problem persisted. After two failed attempts to fix the radio, the dealership ordered me a new one. Unfortunately, the new radio had the same problem. I brought it back to the dealership and even Toyota corporate wizards couldn't fix it. The dealership is still working on a solution, but it's been 3 months and 4000 miles later and I'm still having to use my $60 GPS and hands-on phone, which is what I was using in my 2007 Honda Accord. Despite this frustrating experience, I'm glad I purchased the 100k warranty on this one.

Positive 2019 Toyota Rav4 hybrid car reviews

  1. Charley Hansen 2024-11-07

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your 2019 Rav Hybrid Limited! It sounds like it has many great features that surpass your previous 2007 Sonata Limited. Even though you're still learning about all the features, it's impressive that you've already driven 200 miles and the gas tank is still over half full. You mentioned that you also tried out the Honda CRV Touring and the Nissan Rogue, but ultimately decided on the Rav. It's great that you found the perfect fit for you! When you were shopping around, it seems like you had a positive experience with Edmund's research. It's amazing that you were able to save $1,800 thanks to their help. We recently upgraded from a 2016 Toyota Tundra to a 2019 Hybrid RAV4 and we are very satisfied with our decision. Although we had to wait 4 weeks for the delivery, it was worth it. We ordered it with XLE Convenience Package, Entune 3.0 Audio Plus, XLE Tech Package, and XLE Cold Weather Package. In local city drives, we have seen up to 41.5 MPG and during a recent 1800-mile road trip, we averaged 38.5 MPG, which is a significant improvement from the 14 MPG we were getting on our Toyota Tundra. Although there are a few things that could be improved, overall we are very satisfied. We have driven it for almost 6 months and accumulated 18200 miles so far, and we are still seeing 41.1 MPG with mixed driving. We are happy to report that we have had no unusual expenses other than normal routine oil changes and a fuel pump recall. We have not had to change the brakes yet and we are still using the original brake pads. We are fully happy and satisfied with our Hybrid RAV4 and we highly recommend it.

Good power, great views, awesome air conditioning, wonderful technology - best car ever overall.

The RAV4 hybrid has big shoes to fill, replacing my trusty Honda CR-V that served me well for 20 years and 200,000 miles without any issues. However, I am happy to report that the hybrid has exceeded my expectations thus far!

I purchased my 2019 Hybrid Limited on July 2nd and overall, I am very satisfied with it. The only downside, which I was aware of before purchasing, is the infotainment and cluster gauge UI design and performance. I believe that a full digital cluster gauge should have been an option and standard on Limited, as seen in German makes. Additionally, I find the infotainment/NAV design to be dated with graphics comparable to 5+ year old systems. It would have been better if the infotainment supported SD cards. However, the sound of the JBL system is good. Despite these minor issues, everything else on the vehicle is perfect for my needs and superior to the competition, which is why the Rav4 is such a hot seller. As of January 2022, with 51k miles, I have transitioned from daily 100mi commuter to short distance soccer mom duties and I am getting 33-37MPG. Unfortunately, a very annoying dash rattle has developed, but the fuel tank/gauge recall has been applied and the car performance has been solid. Although I am tempted to trade-in since it has so much value in these crazy times, I am still very happy with my purchase.
