The Toyota RAV4 (Japanese: トヨタ・RAV4, Hepburn: Toyota Ravufō) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers.

It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle was designed for consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the manoeuvrability and fuel economy of a compact car. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.

For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.

In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

Negative 2023 Toyota Rav4 hybrid car reviews

  1. Milton Dibbert 2025-04-15

I bought this car to save on gas since I drive a lot of miles daily to work. At first, the MPG was amazing, averaging about 42-43 combined City and Highway. The ride is smooth and the interior is roomy, making it comfortable for both the driver and passenger. However, I did experience some issues with warning lights coming on and staying on. When I took it to Toyota, they informed me that I had put the car in drive before starting it, which I didn't know was possible. Despite driving for 30 years, I learned something new! Unfortunately, as I reached 8,000 miles, the MPG started to decline and now my hybrid gets between 28-34 MPG. I took it back to Toyota, but unless they do additional testing, they can't say what's wrong. Additionally, the front impact warning and lane assist features do not work when it's freezing outside and the car has to warm up for about 15 minutes before both features start working. Toyota says there's nothing they can do. The car has AWD feature, but it only runs in AWD when in electric driving 25 mph or less. There is a button you can push to circle a parking lot in EV. Overall, I'm not sure if I would buy this car again.

  2. Gust Ondricka 2025-03-03

If you or your passengers are taller than 6 ft, this car may not be the best fit. The front passenger seat lacks height adjustment and has only manual front-back and recline adjustments. Additionally, the passenger seat is set higher than the driver seat and there is a support beam that lowers the ceiling height behind the front seats, which can be uncomfortable for taller passengers. It's worth noting that air bags may not provide the same level of safety when you are in a reclined position. However, the Limited trim does offer height adjustable passenger seats. Thank you for considering this information.

I bought my 2022 RAV4 XLE Premium in May 2022 and have been enjoying it ever since. During the summer and fall, I was getting an impressive 40 to 42 mpg, but as the temperatures dropped in early November, I noticed a significant decrease in fuel mileage. On a recent 1,000 mile trip, I only averaged 32.5 mpg, but I still manage to get around 35 mpg in town. Unfortunately, I've experienced a constant left front brake squeal at low speeds while coming to a slow stop. I took it to the dealer, but they were unable to duplicate the problem. I've heard that replacing the brake shims can help alleviate this issue. Despite these minor setbacks, I'm still very happy with my SUV. However, I hope the local dealer can improve their service in the future.

  4. Edgardo Goodwin 2024-10-06

I purchased the car with the expectation of achieving good gas mileage, however, I am currently only averaging 34 mpg despite being advised to use premium fuel.

  5. Ignatius Schaefer 2024-08-23

I have extensive experience with hybrid cars, having owned three in the past. While my current 2023 XSE Hybrid has all the options I was looking for, I have noticed a roughness in the drivetrain during transitions from electric to ICE. This jerking sensation is not something I have experienced in my previous hybrids and I am confident that it is not normal. Despite my concerns, the dealer has been unhelpful and claims that this is a normal occurrence. I am determined to find a solution to this issue and will not hesitate to seek out a dealer who is willing to investigate and resolve the problem. Until then, I may have to consider other options for my driving needs.

Positive 2023 Toyota Rav4 hybrid car reviews

  1. Pierre Fritsch 2025-05-27

We recently traded in our 2016 RAV4 hybrid when used car prices skyrocketed. While the 16 hybrid was a great vehicle, we decided to upgrade to the new RAV4 XLE Premium. We were blown away by how much more refined the 2022 model has become. The handling is much more responsive and the acceleration is so much smoother. Toyota has made a dramatic improvement in the CTV transmission. We're also impressed by the upgraded driver safety features. The XLE Premium has the added benefit of upgraded seats, making it a versatile and enjoyable car to drive. Plus, with 40 plus miles to a gallon, it's a great choice for those looking to save on gas. Overall, we think Toyota has done a fantastic job with this model.

  2. Alfredo Ondricka 2025-05-25

I love my Rav 4 Prime! The gas mileage is fantastic, especially since I mostly drive under 40 miles a day and can drive on battery only most days. During my last fill-up, I was able to achieve 89.1 mpg due to many days using no gas. The car is also very comfortable and handles great on the windy mountain roads I drive daily. I have owned three 4Runners, 1 Camry, and 1 Corolla over the years, but this is by far the prettiest car I have ever owned. I love all my Toyotas and have driven them all over 200k miles before selling them and buying a new one. They have always been very reliable and never needed anything except regular maintenance. Thank you for considering my experience with this car!

  3. Talon Prohaska 2025-05-25

You were lucky to find your 2023 RAV4 Xse hybrid on the lot. Someone had abandoned their order. It's a sharp RAV4 with black glossy accents over the wheels and both ends. The acceleration is impressive, as is the mileage. You're currently averaging 42 MPG. You love the Apple CarPlay feature on your 10.5 inch screen. The mapping is impressive and realistic. There are lots of electronic features, a comfortable ride, beautiful blue stitching throughout, and plenty of cargo room. It's a great car!

  4. Adelbert Little 2025-05-22

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your Rav 4 hybrid! It sounds like it has exceeded your expectations with its great ride, features, and impressive MPG. The handling is also fantastic, and I'm happy to hear that you love the screen. It's great to know that you feel like you're getting a lot of value for your money with this car.

  5. Emory Block 2025-05-21

I purchased my XSE Hybrid earlier this year in April and got a great deal on it, especially considering the options it came with, such as the JBL stereo with a huge screen. The fuel mileage is beyond impressive, with over 50 mpg in the city and around 45 mpg on the highway! The seats and leg/headroom are quite comfortable. I have noticed some reviews complaining about interior road noise, but I have not experienced any excessive noise, perhaps because I have Michelins? My XSE hybrid is very quiet, without even a rattle. The acceleration performance is impressive and instantaneous, and the hybrid version of the RAV4 is significantly faster than the gas-only version. The handling of the XSE RAV4 is decent for an SUV, with very little lean around faster turns. I have always liked the RAV4, but the hybrid system adds the cherry on top!
