The Lexus GX (Japanese: レクサス・GX, Hepburn: Rekusasu GX) is a mid/full-size luxury SUV sold in North American and Eurasian markets by Lexus, a luxury division of Toyota. The GX is based on the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, from which it derives its off-road capability. Lexus introduced the first generation, known as the GX 470 in 2002, and subsequently became the third SUV to enter the Lexus lineup. A full-time four-wheel drive system is standard with low-range gearing. The 4.7-liter V8 engine in the GX 470 was the same as used on the larger LX 470. The firm next introduced the second-generation model in 2009, badged GX 460 to reflect the switch to a 4.6-liter V8 engine. Lexus later released a lower displacement GX 400 in 2012 for the Chinese market, with a 4.0-liter V6 engine. The third-generation model introduced in 2023 uses the GX 550 moniker with a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 engine and GX 550h with a turbocharged hybrid electric 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine.

As of 2024, the GX is positioned between the larger LX or TX and the smaller RX. Though it is thought the GX has always been larger than the RX, from 2015 to 2022, the RX is slightly longer and slightly wider than the GX and therefore the GX was considered smaller. All GX production has occurred at the Tahara plant in Japan, alongside the Land Cruiser Prado and the export-minded Toyota 4Runner.

Some countries classify the GX as a full-size vehicle (e.g., Australia), while some classify it as a mid-size vehicle (e.g., US), depending on local regulations.

WE HAD SOME INJURIES BUT NO BROKEN BONES. AFTER RESEARCHING, I FIND THE GX IS KNOWN TO HAVE A STABILITY ISSUE AND FLIP FROM EVEN SMALL IMPACTS FROM THE SIDE. THIS ACCIDENT COULD HAVE BEEN WAY WORSE AS MY CAR WAS TOTALED AND ALL AIRBAGS DEPLOYED EXCEPT FOR FRONT STEERING AND DASH.THEY NEED TO FIX THIS ISSUE. AS FAR AS HOLDING UP IN THE ROLLOVER, THE CABIN AREA WAS INTACT MOSTLY. BUT THE CAR SHOULD NOT HAVE ROLLED OVER AND IF I WAS ON THE INTERSTATE OR HAD OTHER CARS COMING AT ME, IT MAY HAVE BEEN WORSE. SUSPENSION,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) PROBLEM

  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JTJBM7FX1H5
  • Components: SUSPENSION,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
  • Summary: TURNING LEFT INTO NEIGHBORHOOD AND STRUCK REAR PASSENGER SIDE PANEL BEHIND THE TIRE (BUMPER AREA). I WAS GOING APPROX 10-15 MPH, OTHER VEHICLE (CAMRY) WAS GOING 40 MPH. CAR ROLLED TWICE. I BELIEVE THIS IS DUE TO A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THIS MODEL LEANING TO THE RIGHT, WHICH CAUSES AN INCREASED ROLLOVER RISK ON LEFT HAND TURNS. IT SEEMS THAT LEXUS IS AWARE, BUT HAS NOT ADDRESSED THE ISSUE. HAPPY TO PROVIDE PHOTOS OR ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTATION IF NEEDED.
2018-01-15

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-08-18
  • VIN: JTJBM7FX8H5
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: THE VEHICLE LEANS TO THE RIGHT (PASSENGER SIDE) ABOUT 1 1/4 COMPARED TO LEFT SIDE SINCE DAY 1 AFTER PURCHASE. I CONTACTED 3 LEXUS DEALERS AND WAS TOLD "IT IS WITHIN SPECS". THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE ON GX 460 MODELS BUT LEXUS REFUSES TO ADMIT IT. THEY REFUSE TO REPAIR IT. THE VEHICLE HAS EXTREME BODY ROLL TO THE RIGHT DURING LEFT TURNS AND FEELS A LOT MORE STABLE DURING RIGHT TURNS. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN. I CONTACTED THE LEXUS CORPORATE OFFICE AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS IS A "CHARACTERISTIC OF THE VEHICLE" AND THEY WILL NOT REPAIR IT. I WAS LIED BY A SERVICE FOREMAN THAT THE VEHICLE WAS DESIGNED THIS WAY. I DID A LOT OF RESEARCH ON THIS ISSUE AND BASED ON SEVERAL TECHNICAL DOCUMENTS IT IS CAUSED BY IMBALANCE BETWEEN THE 2 CYLINDERS ON THE KDSS. PROPER PROCEDURE IS TO BLEED AND RE-FILL THE KDSS SYSTEM BUT LEXUS REFUSES TO DO IT. I WAS TOLD BY A SERVICE MANAGER THAT THIS IS AN EXPENSIVE AND LENGTHY PROCEDURE AND DEALERS AVOID DOING IT. THE VEHICLE HAS ABOUT 10,000 MILES NOT AND IT FEELS EXTREMELY UNSAFE TO DRIVE. I SEE AT LEAST 1 LEXUS GX460 EVERY 1-2 DAYS ON THE ROAD THAT LEANS TO THE RIGHT. I TALKED WITH MULTIPLE OWNERS WHO DIDN'T EVEN NOTICE IT BUT TOTALLY AGREED THAT THEIR VEHICLE WAS LEANING AND FEELS DIFFERENT DURING LEFT TURNS COMPARED TO RIGHT TURNS. THIS IS A MAJOR ISSUE ON MANY TOYOTA VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH KDSS. THE GX 460 IS SOLD IN THE REST OF THE WORLD AS THE TOYOTA LANDCRUISER PRADO AND THEY ALSO HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. IS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM SINCE 2007 WHEN THE KDSS WAS INTRODUCED ON THE LEXUS GX 470 AND LATER INSTALLED IN THE 4RUNNERS AND TOYOTA LANDCRUISERS 200. WORST PART IS THAT LEXUS IN NOT WILLING TO HELP AND MOST DEALERS DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO REPAIR IT. THEY SIMPLY SAY: "YOUR VEHICLE IS WITHIN SPECS". THIS IS A MAJOR, MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. FOR A VEHICLE WITH SUCH HIGH CENTER OF GRAVITY, LEANING ON ONE SIDE CAN CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO ROLL OVER !

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-01-10
  • VIN: JTJBM7FX3H5
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: CAR WAS TRAVELING AT ABOUT 60 MILES PER HOUR ON A FLAT ROAD AT 5:30 PM WHEN A LOUD BANG WAS HEARD. WE NOTICED THAT THE SUNROOF HAS COMPLETELY SHATTERED, BUT STAYED INTACT. SMALL SHARDS OF OF GLASS FELL INSIDE. THE TEMPERATURE WAS 55 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT OUTSIDE AND 69 INSIDE. WE CLOSED THE COVER SO NO GLASS WOULD FALL INSIDE. THE SUNROOF DOES NOT LOOK LIKE ANYTHING HIT IT AND THE VEHICLE IS STORED IN THE GARAGE.

Negative 2017 Lexus Gx460 car reviews

  1. Cordell Bednar 2024-09-27

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2nd GX 460. I absolutely love how it drives and handles! When my 2012 came off lease, I decided to try out another brand because I thought Lexus wasn't keeping up with the latest technology, such as remote start, adaptable cruise control, and integration with smartphones. However, after my wife got her 5th RX, I decided to check out the advances in the 2017 GX technology and it seemed like they had done a great job catching up. So, I decided to go for it and purchased a 2017 in Dec 2016. Everything was great until March, when I started having some trouble with Enform remote. I've been in touch with Lexus Technology Support quite a bit, and while it's been frustrating, I know they're doing their best to help me out. Even the local dealer tech guy has been trying to assist me. I'm confident that we'll get this resolved soon! By the way, if you're interested in checking out some user reviews, you can find them at http://lexus-enform-app-suite.appstor.io/app-reviews. Thanks for listening!

  2. Jeffrey White 2024-09-24

After experiencing technology issues with another brand, my husband decided to spoil me and got me a brand new Lexus with only 2 miles on it! Although I have had some issues with this vehicle, I have always had positive experiences with Lexus products in the past. Unfortunately, this vehicle has had some problems with phone syncing, voice recognition, navigation maps, and excessive bouncing and rough vibrations from the front right end. I have had to constantly balance the tires and even had to replace my Michelin tires sooner than expected due to wear and tear. Despite these issues, I have found that other loaner vehicles of the same model ride smoothly. Additionally, I have experienced camera issues with the screen freezing or being slow to switch back to the normal screen. Although the dealership has not been able to identify the problem, they have replaced the brain in the vehicle. I feel terrible complaining to my husband about these issues, especially since we spent a lot of money on this vehicle. While it may be a lot of work to file a lemon law, I am considering it as an option.

  3. Tracey Kuvalis 2024-08-17

I use my 2016 Lexus GX 460 every day, but unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues with it. Although the ride is smooth, I have found the GPS to be inaccurate at times. It often tells me that I have arrived when I am still in the vicinity, which can be frustrating. Additionally, it can be difficult to adjust the air conditioning while driving, as it requires multiple screen presses. I have also had trouble with the Apps, such as Pandora, which often give me a 'tether error'. Despite these issues, I still appreciate the comfort of the ride. However, I do hope that Lexus can improve their electronics in the future. Thank you for listening to my feedback.

  4. Bill Cole 2024-03-23

This SUV is built like a tank with reliability, durability and longevity second to none. The interior is nicely done and of course its off road prowess is also second to none. The ride is also surprisingly comfortable and absorbent for a true body-on-frame SUV designed to tackle some really tough terrain. However, it is important to note that the GX falls short of being a true luxury vehicle. While it does have leather and fancy gadgets, there is more to luxury than that. Unfortunately, the powertrain is not up to par with the rest of the vehicle. The engine is quite noisy and can be tiring on long drives. While some may find it quiet, it is definitely not the smoothest V8 out there. Despite its shortcomings, the GX is still a reliable vehicle. However, if you are looking for a true luxury experience, this may not be the vehicle for you.

  5. Kevin Bode 2024-03-12

I purchased this car after driving 4Runners for 25 years, expecting a more luxurious version of my previous vehicles. However, I have found several features that do not meet my expectations, such as the requirement for hi-test gas, poor gas mileage, and poor interior design with awkwardly positioned cup holders and less accessible places for change. Additionally, the side-opening back door is awkward and does not provide protection from rain, making it difficult to load large packages. These issues detract from an otherwise well-designed car.

Positive 2017 Lexus Gx460 car reviews

  1. Edwardo Koss 2025-01-06

I've owned many Toyota and Lexus products over the years, and they've all been great. This is my first GX, and what a truck it is! It's a perfect blend of luxury and old-school solid off-road warrior. When I was looking for a new car, I got a lease quote on a 4Runner with the TRD package, which I loved, but it's not the type of truck you can take to an opera, and the lease program wasn't so great. Then I looked at the 2017 GX 460 base model with a black exterior and Sepia Nu Lux imitation leather interior, and all the 4x4 goods that come with this truck. I was amazed at how great it drove and how old-school it still felt, but in a good way. This thing is a true off-roader, and it's based more on the Land Cruiser Prado than the 4Runner. With driverless cars and electric vehicles being the desired way of the future, I can't imagine this rough and tough Lexus being available for much longer and being replaced with something more trendy. For us 4x4 truck lovers, now is the time to grab a 4Runner, GX, or Land Cruiser before they're gone, just like the FJ. I love my GX because it's everything the 4Runner is and much more. I'll be buying mine at the end of the lease, which is fortunately my option to do so, and the resale value is so good that it's truly a no-brainer.

  2. Charley Schmidt 2024-11-15

This vehicle is far more reliable than a Land Rover/Range Rover, BMW or MB, with a legendary resale value. If you opt for the Luxury Package, you get everything you need. Although it may not ride like an RX, it is a body-on-frame with a real V8, AWD and air suspension for heavy loads. I like it so much that I bought another one for myself, as the other one is my wife's. The build quality is extremely high, it is very quiet, and it is plenty quick. On a road trip to the mountains, it achieved 20.7 mph with 4 people and full of luggage - almost 9 mpg better than my last vehicle. I still love it after 5 years.

  3. Stanley Fahey 2024-10-25

Hey there! If you're in the market for a new car, you might want to consider the Lexus GX 460 premium. It's a great choice!

  4. Alexander Heathcote 2024-10-18

Excellent complete vehicle! It's strong, economical, AWD V-8, and VERY reliable!!

  5. Friedrich Gutkowski 2024-09-25

I came across this title in a YouTube video that I watched before purchasing one of these. It is important to know what this vehicle is all about before making a purchase. This is a classic vehicle that is built to last. It can withstand any weather condition and with basic maintenance, it can last for a very long time. Although it is not fast, fuel-efficient, or equipped with the latest technology, it is a well-crafted machine that can comfortably and quietly transport you, your family, and your toys anywhere. My father owned two of the older LX470 vehicles and they drove just as well with 150k miles on them as when they were new. The GX and other vehicles from this Toyota factory are known for their durability and longevity. You can feel the quality of the build in every aspect of this vehicle. It is designed to be used extensively and still function perfectly for many years to come. I sincerely hope that Lexus does not discontinue this product as I would love to purchase an updated version that still maintains the same robust body-on-frame build quality while incorporating some modern features that this vehicle currently lacks.
