Toyota Rav4 hybrid problems

The Toyota RAV4 (Japanese: トヨタ・RAV4, Hepburn: Toyota Ravufō) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers.

It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle was designed for consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the manoeuvrability and fuel economy of a compact car. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.

For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.

In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

Common Toyota Rav4 hybrid problems

The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is a popular choice for those seeking a fuel-efficient SUV. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems based on complaints from owners.

One issue that has been reported is the inability of the 2019 model to hold the vehicle's full 14.9-gallon fuel tank capacity. Sixteen different RAV4 Hybrid owners complained about this problem, which can be a significant inconvenience. While Toyota has improved on this issue in later model years, it's still something to consider when purchasing a 2019 RAV4 Hybrid.

Another common problem with the RAV4 Hybrid is fuel system issues, which have been the most consistent issue in the last seven model years. While the RAV4 Hybrid is generally a reliable vehicle, these fuel system problems can be a cause for concern.

Hybrid powertrain systems are newer and more complex than internal combustion engines, which often means a higher likelihood of reliability issues. However, Toyota is a pioneer in hybrid vehicles, and the advantages of owning a RAV4 Hybrid outweigh the usual disadvantages of hybrid vehicle ownership.

Some owners have reported transmission problems, particularly with the 2019 model, which may cause trouble shifting between gears or the SUV lurching at lower speeds.

Excessive oil consumption is another common problem, particularly with the 2005 Toyota RAV4 model. Many drivers reported that between 75,000 and 150,000 miles, the SUV burned more oil than average, leading Toyota to extend the warranty due to this issue.

Steering problems have also been reported, particularly with the 2017 model year. Some owners reported that the wheel locked up or pulled to one side, while others heard knocking noises as they turned. Additionally, some drivers have reported issues with the brake system, including the vehicle accelerating when the brakes were hit, which can be a significant safety concern.

While the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is generally a reliable vehicle, these common problems are worth considering when purchasing a new or used RAV4 Hybrid. It's essential to do your research and ensure that the vehicle you're purchasing has been well-maintained and doesn't have any significant issues.

What are the disadvantages of a RAV4 Hybrid?

Things We Don't Like

  • Noisy Cabin. Excessive interior noise from different sources is an issue with the RAV4 Hybrid. ...
  • Rough Rider. As capable as the RAV4 feels in the corners, the price paid is a relatively firm and unsettled ride for a compact SUV. ...
  • Nothing Special Inside. ...
  • Technical Difficulties.

What is the common problem of Toyota RAV4?

But with more used RAV4s in the market — some with hundreds of thousands of miles on the odometer — some of these hiccups will be unavoidable. The RAV4's issues include excessive oil consumption, steering wheel problems, lagging transmissions, fuel system problems, and electrical complications, among other troubles.

  1. Connor McClure 2025-07-23

    Vehicle year: 2019

As a fellow Toyota enthusiast, I can understand your disappointment with the 2019 RAV4 Hybrid XLE. It's always tough when a new model doesn't live up to our expectations. However, I'm glad to hear that you found a better fit with the 2020 Subaru Forester. The redesigned look is definitely a plus, and the gas mileage is impressive. It's great that the vehicle heats up quickly in cold weather and has a heated steering wheel. The seats are comfortable, and the voice commands work well with your iPhone. I'm also happy to hear that the dealer service department went above and beyond to program your key fobs for free. As for the cons, I can understand your frustration with the speedometer accuracy. Overall, it sounds like you made the right choice in switching to the Subaru Forester. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!To get the vehicle to travel at 72 mpg, I had to set the cruise at 75 mph, as the dealer was unable to adjust or re-calibrate the speedometer to be more accurate. Additionally, the average mpg calculated by the vehicle was always higher than the actual mpg we achieved. When filling the tank with fuel using the fuel pumps that lock the handle in place, I was unable to fill the tank beyond 3/4 full, which was inconvenient and time-consuming. On longer drives, I found myself feeling cramped and confined, which was uncomfortable for me in my driving position. Lastly, the interior of the vehicle is quite dark at night, with none of the switches illuminated, making it difficult to find the buttons for the map lights, windows, door lock/unlock, moon roof, or power mirror adjustments. To turn on the map light, you need to locate a small button on the side of the overhead console. It may take a little bit of feeling around, but once you find it, you're good to go! Although this may be a bit disappointing, it's not a deal breaker. We recently traded in our RAV for a 2020 Subaru Forester Limited and we couldn't be happier. The Forester was redesigned in 2019 and is now a little larger, making it even more comfortable than our previous car. The power seat has more travel, and the interior feels more spacious with plenty of leg and headroom. The HVAC controls have large buttons and knobs, and the windows, door locks, and power mirror switches are illuminated for easy use. The door and center console surfaces are padded, and there's even a larger moon roof and puddle lights on the bottom of the door. It's the little touches that make a big difference! Plus, it has a CD player. We're currently averaging 30 mpg combined and an impressive 32.1 mpg on the highway.

  2. Jesse Moen 2025-07-11

    Vehicle year: 2022

I bought this car to save on gas since I drive a lot of miles daily to work. At first, the MPG was amazing, averaging about 42-43 combined City and Highway. The ride is smooth and the interior is roomy, making it comfortable for both the driver and passenger. However, I did experience some issues with warning lights coming on and staying on. When I took it to Toyota, they informed me that I had put the car in drive before starting it, which I didn't know was possible. Despite driving for 30 years, I learned something new! Unfortunately, as I reached 8,000 miles on the car, the MPG started to decline and now my hybrid gets between 28-34 MPG. I took it back to Toyota, but unless they do additional testing, they can't say what's wrong. Additionally, the front impact warning and lane assist features do not work when it's freezing outside and the car has to warm up for about 15 minutes for both features to work. Toyota says there's nothing they can do. The car has the AWD feature, but it only runs in AWD when in electric driving 25 mph or less. There is a button you can push to circle a parking lot in EV. Overall, I'm not sure if I would buy this car again.

  3. Laverna Treutel 2025-07-09

I have the LE, which rides smoothly, gets good mileage, and is comfy for me, an average sized woman. Main problem is that after 3 months it wouldn’t start. The 12 volt battery on which starting depends hadn’t charged. It needed a tow. Dealer replaced the battery for free but told me I didn’t drive enough to keep it charged. Hmmm. I drive short distances 4 or 5 days a week. I’ll also need to leave the car at airport lots or camping sites in the future and worry about battery drain. A new car shouldn’t do this. Except for the battery, which is a big deal, I like it, but think Toyota should anticipate real people’s driving habits.

  4. Evans Quitzon 2025-06-24

    Vehicle year: 2019

Hey there! If you're thinking about buying a new RAV4 hybrid, I just wanted to give you a heads up. It seems that Toyota has been aware since April that the fuel tank doesn't register as full unless it's packed. Unfortunately, they haven't been warning consumers about this. So, when you go to the dealer, make sure to ask them about it!

  5. Charles Anderson 2025-06-17

    Vehicle year: 2019

I really enjoyed my top of the line, all the bells and whistles Limited, except for one issue. The first time I filled it up, it only took 3 gallons, which was a bit concerning. I reported it to the dealer, but they said there was no issue. Later, I discovered that I could get between 3-5.2 gallons of fuel in it. Despite complaining and requesting a buyback, Toyota has been unresponsive and I'm disappointed that they are making me pay a lawyer to resolve the issue. As a lifelong customer, I feel let down. Update January 2023: Despite multiple attempted fixes, the vehicle still has some issues, such as taking 10 gallons instead of the advertised 15, getting 28 mpg instead of the advertised 38-40, and the fuel gauge not working. Toyota has informed me that they cannot fix these issues, but I remain hopeful that they will find a solution.

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your new vehicle! It's great to hear that you're happy with its performance, power, and looks. While the AWD All Wheel Drive may be different from what you're used to driving, it's good to know that it hasn't affected your overall driving experience. Thanks for sharing your positive experience so far!

I really like the mechanics behind this technology. The vehicle is really nice to drive. I think I made a great choice in deciding on this vehicle. The MPG is actually better than stated, but I'm not an aggressive driver.

I'm on my third RAV4, and the 2018 hybrid is my first. My previous 2016 gas xle was a reliable car with pretty good handling and slow acceleration, driving like a sedan with a combined mpg of 27.5. However, the 2018 hybrid is even better, giving me a combined 37.5mpg, and it's pretty quiet with good acceleration. It's also roomier than the 2016 and takes curves well, which is great since I live in the Poconos. The only concern I've had so far is the noise and jolt when the gas engine kicks in after being in electric mode. After a year of driving, my initial impression has been correct, and I'm averaging about 36mpg city and 34mpg hwy. The AWD traction in snow was good with the factory all-season Michelins. While this car may not win any races, the 2018 RAV4 is a reliable family SUV.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the RAV4 Hybrid! It's great to hear that after four years and 46K miles, you still love this car and that it handles like a new vehicle. Your city MPG has improved to 36 MPG, which is 2-3 MPG better than your former Camry Hybrid, despite the RAV4 Hybrid weighing more and having a huge trunk. It's also wonderful to hear that the hybrid brakes and steering feel much improved and essentially the same as a non-hybrid. The built-in Nav system is accurate and you use it all the time. The optional seat warmers are great for soothing your lower back and loosening it up on the way to the gym. The synthetic leather seat fabric is also a great feature, as it doesn't get as hot during the summer as real leather and you don't have to use a leather conditioner on it. You feel very secure with all of the Toyota Safety Sense gizmos, which are worth every penny. Although you're still unhappy with the Premium JBL Audio, it's clear that you'd gladly buy another RAV4 Hybrid if you didn't already own this one! This is your second Toyota hybrid, and you gifted your 11 y.o. Camry Hybrid after many miles and zero trouble. You were interested in another Toyota hybrid and drove the RAV4-H and loved it. You also gave the highly acclaimed 2018 CRV a try, but ultimately decided on the RAV4-H Limited w/Adv. Tech. Package. You're very happy with this car, getting 30+ mpg around town, which is only about 10% less than your former Camry-H. It's quiet, smooth, comfortable, and feels very safe. Thanks again for sharing your experience! One thing to keep in mind is that the Premium JBL Audio may not meet your expectations, as the sound quality is mediocre at best. The Honda CRV Touring's premium sound system is no better. Additionally, there is only one USB, which is tethered to the Entune system, whereas the CRV has many. However, these minor issues can be easily resolved by adding USB adapters and a dashboard mat. Despite these minor issues, we absolutely love our RAV4-H, especially when we drive past our neighbors filling up their gas-guzzling SUVs at the local gas station! In 2019, we decided to upgrade the sound system by replacing all 6 of the door and dash speakers as well as the subwoofer with much better units as recommended by Crutchfield. We installed the subwoofer amp in the flip-up storage area on the trunk floor just behind the seats (unique to the Hybrid). The subwoofer is one that fits in the same panel space as the OEM unit. We used the OEM JBL electronics, and now the sound is fantastic!

My wife wrecked the Prius. We had it for 104000 miles and not a single problem. Thus we got the Rav 4 hybrid. Did a big trip from southington Ct to fort Kent Maine. Got 41 mpg one leg of trip, 42 rest of trip and 38 on way home. Keep in mind, it was mostly highways and north of Bangor, speed limit is 75, I was doing 80. Rest of it is around 50 mph, but up and down steep hills. Exactly the place you do not want to drive a hybrid. This was calculated by dividing the gallons into the milage on the odometer., not the meter on the dashboard. Love the power lumbar in drivers seat and adaptable cruise control. Love the styling. We looked at the CRV which I thought was kinda stupid looking. It was less pricy Nd had better financing options. But I have been reading about the gas dilution issues, in addition I don’t like CVT transmissions and turbos, which CRV has both of them. They are prone to failure and costly to repair. The RAV 4 has a CVT, but Toyota has Been making hybrids for over 22 years and this design has proven to to be extremely reliable. In fact, A leading consumer products magazine states it is more reliable than a conventional car. Google “most reliable cars” and you will see for yourself. I do however have 1 dislike. The gas gauge does not go all the way to full. When I fill up it takes only 9 1/2 gallons. In one way, this is a pleasant surprise when the odometer shows you have travelled 420 miles. On the other hand, it is more fillip stops. Also, when the low fuel warning goes off, you can no longer see your mpg on the dashboard. Does this mean there is 5 gallons left after low fuel goes off? Or does it mean less than a gallon
