Toyota Rav4 hybrid problems
The Toyota RAV4 (Japanese: トヨタ・RAV4, Hepburn: Toyota Ravufō) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers.
It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle was designed for consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the manoeuvrability and fuel economy of a compact car. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.
For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.
In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

Common Toyota Rav4 hybrid problems
The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is a popular choice for those seeking a fuel-efficient SUV. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems based on complaints from owners.
One issue that has been reported is the inability of the 2019 model to hold the vehicle's full 14.9-gallon fuel tank capacity. Sixteen different RAV4 Hybrid owners complained about this problem, which can be a significant inconvenience. While Toyota has improved on this issue in later model years, it's still something to consider when purchasing a 2019 RAV4 Hybrid.
Another common problem with the RAV4 Hybrid is fuel system issues, which have been the most consistent issue in the last seven model years. While the RAV4 Hybrid is generally a reliable vehicle, these fuel system problems can be a cause for concern.
Hybrid powertrain systems are newer and more complex than internal combustion engines, which often means a higher likelihood of reliability issues. However, Toyota is a pioneer in hybrid vehicles, and the advantages of owning a RAV4 Hybrid outweigh the usual disadvantages of hybrid vehicle ownership.
Some owners have reported transmission problems, particularly with the 2019 model, which may cause trouble shifting between gears or the SUV lurching at lower speeds.
Excessive oil consumption is another common problem, particularly with the 2005 Toyota RAV4 model. Many drivers reported that between 75,000 and 150,000 miles, the SUV burned more oil than average, leading Toyota to extend the warranty due to this issue.
Steering problems have also been reported, particularly with the 2017 model year. Some owners reported that the wheel locked up or pulled to one side, while others heard knocking noises as they turned. Additionally, some drivers have reported issues with the brake system, including the vehicle accelerating when the brakes were hit, which can be a significant safety concern.
While the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is generally a reliable vehicle, these common problems are worth considering when purchasing a new or used RAV4 Hybrid. It's essential to do your research and ensure that the vehicle you're purchasing has been well-maintained and doesn't have any significant issues.
How reliable are the Toyota RAV4 hybrids?
The 2024 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid has a predicted reliability score of 76 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.
What is the life expectancy of a RAV4 Hybrid battery?
between 3 to 5 years

What are the disadvantages of a RAV4 Hybrid?
Things We Don't Like
- Noisy Cabin. Excessive interior noise from different sources is an issue with the RAV4 Hybrid. ...

- Nothing Special Inside. ...
- Technical Difficulties.
What is the common problem of Toyota RAV4?
But with more used RAV4s in the market — some with hundreds of thousands of miles on the odometer — some of these hiccups will be unavoidable. The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XSE is a fantastic car that ticks all the boxes for me. It's powerful, smooth, comfortable, roomy, and has a sporty look. What's more, it has great gas mileage and AWD, which were my top priorities in a new car. Although finding one was quite the challenge, my great salesperson and a little patience helped me find exactly what I was looking for.

Your vehicle sounds like a great fit for you! I'm glad to hear that you're satisfied with its performance and comfort. It's impressive that you've averaged 34.08 MPG over the past 2 years, and it's great to hear that all of the safety systems are working correctly. It's also reassuring to know that you haven't had any reliability issues. While some competitors may have better interiors, it's good to hear that you find the vehicle's interior to be okay and that it has plenty of room and cargo space. It's also great that you've had a seamless experience switching between gas and electric. With Toyota Care, you've had zero maintenance costs, and it's a no-brainer to sign up for Toyota Care Plus at a cost of $329 for another 2 years, which also covers a new air filter and cabin filter at 30,000 miles. It's impressive that you've had such a positive experience with the vehicle over the past 3 years, and it's great to hear that you're still getting great MPG with no problems or expenses. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your 2019 Rav Hybrid Limited! It sounds like it has many great features that surpass your previous 2007 Sonata Limited. Even though you're still learning about all the features, it's impressive that you've already driven 200 miles and the gas tank is still over half full. You mentioned that you also tried out the Honda CRV Touring and the Nissan Rogue, but ultimately decided on the Rav. It's great that you found the perfect fit for you! When you were shopping around, it seems like you had a positive experience with Edmund's research. It's amazing that you were able to save $1,800 thanks to their help. Congratulations on your new car!

The 2019 Rav 4 gas version gets about 33mpg, which is the same mileage I got with the 2017 Hybrid. It's not worth paying extra for the Hybrid. Additionally, my 2019 has way more pickup than the Hybrid did. Unfortunately, I had an accident with the 2017 Hybrid and the airbags never deployed, even though the collision was direct and frontal. My son also had a Hybrid Toyota and experienced the same disappointing gas mileage results. Despite these issues, we have always owned Toyotas and will probably continue to do so, just not with Hybrids. Lastly, I should mention that the tires were worn out in under 20000 miles.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my thoughts on the Rav4. I've had the pleasure of owning a few different models over the years, including the 2015 and 2017 gas engines. Looking back, I regret not keeping the 2017 Limited as it was a much better all-round vehicle. It had great gas mileage and just enough technology to make it a joy to drive. However, I recently purchased the 2020 model and have been a bit disappointed with the noise level on the highway. Unfortunately, the radio doesn't do much to disguise it. Additionally, the ride isn't as impressive as I had hoped. After 4000 miles, I'm considering trading it in. I did sell my previous Rav4 after 16 months, but I'm still hopeful that Toyota will correct the noise issue in future models. Perhaps in the 2024 redesign, it will happen. Thanks for listening to my thoughts!

Pro: It's whisper quiet, handles well, and is great on gas. The interior looks quality and well-designed. Cons: Although the gas engine is loud, there are rattles all over the place with only 175 miles on it, and the fit and finish isn't as good as my Ford.
Paolo Lesch 2024-10-14
Vehicle year: 2020
The car has strong fuel economy, handling, and visibility. The smart key is a great feature, although some have reported that it can drain the 12V battery. The tech package, which includes an inferior birds-eye rear view camera and a finicky foot-sensing rear hatch, is not worth the extra money. Unfortunately, you cannot install a trailer hitch if you have a sensing gate. The front seat comfort is disappointing, and the lack of a power passenger seat is surprising for a car that costs $42K. The fuel tank's inability to hold close to the stated volume is inexcusable, and Toyota seems disinclined to fix it. However, the car's snow performance was a pleasant surprise. It performs well on packed snow and ice, but struggles on 6 inches of fresh snow or slush. I have owned AWD SUVs from RAV, Volvo, BMW, Honda, and Subaru, and while I did not expect this one to top all of those, it should have been above average, which is where it is. I have been told that the non-hybrid version is better. UPDATE: Edmunds asked for an update, so here it is. After 16 months, my previous comments still stand. The vehicle met Toyota's defined recall for fuel tank capacity, and the dealer says it's within spec, so no repair is needed. The fuel tank never reads full and takes 9.5-10.4 gallons when the low fuel light comes on. A master tech from another state says the dealer is wrong, but I cannot get it fixed. That, along with the useless fog lights and uncomfortable front seats, are my biggest gripes. The car's biggest strengths are its fuel mileage and reliability.

The 2019 and 2020 RAV4 Hybrid models have a known issue where the gas tank won't fill up all the way, resulting in only about 10-11 gallons being accepted instead of the 14.5 capacity. This can be frustrating as it affects the advertised 580 miles per tankful and makes it difficult to accurately gauge gas and mileage. While Toyota has not disclosed this issue to buyers, it is important to note that it is not a safety concern. However, a defective gas tank could cause increased pressure and other non-desirable effects inside the tank, potentially compromising the life of other parts and leading to costly repairs down the road when it's out of warranty. It is recommended that Toyota recall/fix the issue and extend the warranty or buy back the affected cars. An update on this issue is that Toyota has sent a letter about a year after purchase stating that they would fix the fuel tank issue under a Customer Support Program (not a recall). Although it has been almost two years and no further communication has been received from Toyota, local dealerships have been able to fix the issue by replacing the parts. The fuel tank needle now goes to full and seems to accept more gas.
