The Toyota RAV4 (Japanese: トヨタ・RAV4, Hepburn: Toyota Ravufō) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers.

It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle was designed for consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the manoeuvrability and fuel economy of a compact car. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.

For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.

In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

Common Toyota Rav4 hybrid problems

The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is a popular choice for those seeking a fuel-efficient SUV. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems based on complaints from owners.

One issue that has been reported is the inability of the 2019 model to hold the vehicle's full 14.9-gallon fuel tank capacity. Sixteen different RAV4 Hybrid owners complained about this problem, which can be a significant inconvenience. While Toyota has improved on this issue in later model years, it's still something to consider when purchasing a 2019 RAV4 Hybrid.

Another common problem with the RAV4 Hybrid is fuel system issues, which have been the most consistent issue in the last seven model years. While the RAV4 Hybrid is generally a reliable vehicle, these fuel system problems can be a cause for concern.

Hybrid powertrain systems are newer and more complex than internal combustion engines, which often means a higher likelihood of reliability issues. However, Toyota is a pioneer in hybrid vehicles, and the advantages of owning a RAV4 Hybrid outweigh the usual disadvantages of hybrid vehicle ownership.

Some owners have reported transmission problems, particularly with the 2019 model, which may cause trouble shifting between gears or the SUV lurching at lower speeds.

Excessive oil consumption is another common problem, particularly with the 2005 Toyota RAV4 model. Many drivers reported that between 75,000 and 150,000 miles, the SUV burned more oil than average, leading Toyota to extend the warranty due to this issue.

Steering problems have also been reported, particularly with the 2017 model year. Some owners reported that the wheel locked up or pulled to one side, while others heard knocking noises as they turned. Additionally, some drivers have reported issues with the brake system, including the vehicle accelerating when the brakes were hit, which can be a significant safety concern.

While the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is generally a reliable vehicle, these common problems are worth considering when purchasing a new or used RAV4 Hybrid. It's essential to do your research and ensure that the vehicle you're purchasing has been well-maintained and doesn't have any significant issues.

What are the disadvantages of a RAV4 Hybrid?

Things We Don't Like

  • Noisy Cabin. Excessive interior noise from different sources is an issue with the RAV4 Hybrid. ...
  • Rough Rider. As capable as the RAV4 feels in the corners, the price paid is a relatively firm and unsettled ride for a compact SUV. ...
  • Nothing Special Inside. ...
  • Technical Difficulties.

What is the common problem of Toyota RAV4?

But with more used RAV4s in the market — some with hundreds of thousands of miles on the odometer — some of these hiccups will be unavoidable. The RAV4's issues include excessive oil consumption, steering wheel problems, lagging transmissions, fuel system problems, and electrical complications, among other troubles.

Latest negative Toyota Rav4 hybrid car reviews

  1. Charles Anderson 2025-06-17

    Vehicle year: 2019

I really enjoyed my top of the line, all the bells and whistles Limited, except for one issue. The first time I filled it up, it only took 3 gallons, which was a bit concerning. I reported it to the dealer, but they said there was no issue. Later, I discovered that I could get between 3-5.2 gallons of fuel in it. Despite complaining and requesting a buyback, Toyota has been unresponsive and I'm disappointed that they are making me pay a lawyer to resolve the issue. As a lifelong customer, I feel let down. Update January 2023: Despite multiple attempted fixes, the vehicle still has some issues, such as taking 10 gallons instead of the advertised 15, getting 28 mpg instead of the advertised 38-40, and the fuel gauge not working. Toyota has informed me that they cannot fix these issues, but I remain hopeful that they will find a solution.

  2. Webster Halvorson 2025-05-28

    Vehicle year: 2017

This is my first Toyota and the first hybrid I have owned. While the low cost of ownership was the primary factor in deciding to buy it, I have some concerns about the interior design, infotainment system, gas mileage, rattles, CVT, and brakes. However, I am confident that Toyota will continue to improve and innovate in these areas, and I look forward to seeing their future developments. Overall, I am satisfied with my purchase and believe that Toyota is a reliable and trustworthy brand.

  3. Hazle Cremin 2025-05-16

    Vehicle year: 2020

After carefully reading professional reviews, it appears that the passenger side of the car is a bit cramped. The seat is positioned higher, possibly due to the battery being located underneath it (the salesman was unable to confirm this). I personally found it difficult to get in and felt cramped while sitting, but I am 5'10

  4. Rudolph Pacocha 2025-05-13

    Vehicle year: 2022

If you or your passengers are taller than 6 ft, this car may not be the best fit. The front passenger seat lacks height adjustment and has only manual front-back and recline adjustments. Additionally, the passenger seat is set higher than the driver seat and there is a support beam that lowers the ceiling height behind the front seats, which can be uncomfortable for taller passengers. It's worth noting that air bags may not provide the same level of safety when you are in a reclined position. However, the Limited trim does offer height adjustable passenger seats. Thank you for considering this information.

  5. Brando Berge 2025-05-05

    Vehicle year: 2018

Why would you build a $35,000 vehicle and only include fake leather and electric seats for the driver's side? I test drove both the Honda and the Toyota, and in terms of quality, the Honda far surpassed the Toyota. Additionally, the dash on the Toyota looks cheap. It's a shame because I was considering buying the Toyota, but the build quality definitely goes to Honda.

  2. Carey Klocko 2025-06-20

    Vehicle year: 2023

We recently traded in our Highlander for a 2022 RAV4 Limited Hybrid to take advantage of its high value and better MPG. The RAV4 has a lot of great features, including LED headlights that are excellent at night and a power passenger seat (finally!). The sight lines are great and there are limited blind spots. The acceleration is sprightly and the seats are firm but comfortable. However, the engine noise is quite noticeable and could be a deal breaker for some. Additionally, the Toyota safety technology can be a bit annoying, but we quickly turned off all but the BSM. The only downside is the lack of a convenient coin holder, which we were used to having in the Highlander.

  3. Enrique Collins 2025-06-19

    Vehicle year: 2021

After owning a 2020 Highlander for a year, which I found to be a big and lumbering box with cheap cabin materials, I decided to trade it in for a 2021 Rav4 Hybrid XSE and I absolutely LOVE it! I have driven 4,000 miles so far, a mix of highway and town driving, and I have to say that there are so many things to love about this car. Firstly, it is fun and peppy to drive, especially in sport mode. The MPG has been consistently between 39 and 45, which is fantastic. The ride is comfortable and quiet, and the turn radius is great. I also appreciate the rubbery, non-slip material that covers the knobs and door handles, which gives a great feel. There are even two cubbies for miscellaneous items, which are also non-slip lined. The JBL stereo is excellent, and the infotainment system is fine without being too distracting. The only downside is that the tire pressure is only displayed in the phone app, but that's a minor issue. Overall, I highly recommend the 2021 Rav4 Hybrid XSE to anyone looking for a reliable and enjoyable car.

  4. Johnpaul Ratke 2025-06-18

    Vehicle year: 2021

Hybrids in general are awesome! They're not a new technology anymore, and they help you save on gasoline while being easier on the planet. This RAV4 is powerful and has a smooth, quiet ride. I love the exterior styling and my black mag wheels. I keep cars for a long time, and I'm confident that this Toyota will easily last me 10 plus years. It's a Toyota!

I've been driving my 2017 Rav4 Limited Hybrid Compact SUV for 8 months now and have had ample time to become familiar with its drive performance, fuel economy, ride feel, handling, and cargo/storage capacity, as well as the advanced features of the car. At the time of purchase, I was looking for a compact to mid-size SUV that could achieve close to 30 mpg on fuel economy. My wife drives a 2010 Lexus RX450h that still averages 28.5 mpg, but we did not want another Lexus RX. We did look closely at the Lexus NX 300h, which shares much in common with the Rav4 Hybrid. In fact, after an exhaustive search, the final decision came down to a brand new 2017 Toyota Rav4 vs a 2015 Lexus NX 300h with 8000 miles on it (for about $5,000 more than the new Rav4). We chose the Rav4 because it was less expensive and offered most of what the Lexus was offering, but 8 months later, I am not certain that it was the smarter choice. Here are my thoughts: With its CVT Transmission, the Rav4 is a very smooth driving car (not talking about suspension here). Even under hard acceleration, you simply do not feel any jolts or changing of gears (the beauty of Continuously Variable Transmission) and it is my favorite thing about this car. The car holds to the road quite well on tight corners and accelerates well enough (not like a sports car but much better than I had expected) when merging onto the highway. Braking is good but not as So, in 'Sport Mode' I averaged 28.5 mpg. After switching to 'Eco Mode' (at the press of a button), I began averaging 31.5 - 32 mpg. I have averaged as high as 35.5 mpg (mostly city driving) and as low as 25.5 mpg (all highway and into heavy winds). Given the way that I drive (impatient but not a Nascar driver), I honestly cannot tell the difference in the 'feel of the car' between the Sport Mode and the Economy Mode, but I have really noticed the difference in the improved gas mileage performance when in Eco Mode. I have not driven in pure EV mode, as you cannot plug your battery into a charger to recharge it (like you can with a pure electric car). Consequently, my car stays permanently in Eco Mode now. In my estimation, the car strikes a reasonable balance between comfortable ride and stiffness on the suspension (for cornering). The suspension and seats do not afford the 'cushy' ride of my wife's Lexus but are not as 'stiff' and unforgiving as my previous car. While I am happy with the midway balance in the suspension, I am less enamoured with the seats. The faux leather looks cheap to me, and the seats are of average comfort. While the front seats are heated, they are not vented (a feature that I would have had in the Lexus NX 300h), and they feel much less supportive than the seats in my old car or my wife's Lexus. I am 5' 9' tall and weigh 160 Lbs. After 3 hours of driving, I am ready to get out of those seats to stretch my legs and give my posterior a break. I am planning a 3,000-mile trip in the Rav4 and feeling apprehensive about how comfortable those seats are going to be on such a long journey. I have no complaints with respect to cargo/storage space, considering that this is a 'compact' SUV. We have had more than ample room for our luggage on overnight trips and plenty of room for shopping (even when I bring along the large Yeti cooler).I really like this car, but I feel like I may have overpaid for some of the advanced features that I don't use. However, I absolutely love the auto-dim headlights that turn off the brights when a car is approaching and then turn them back on after they pass. Overall, I think the Limited Hybrid is a good value, but it could be a great one if it were priced under 30 Grand. I would definitely recommend it in that case!
