The Chevrolet Aveo (/əˈveɪ.oʊ/ ə-VAY-oh) is a five-passenger, front-drive subcompact car (B-segment) marketed by General Motors (GM) since 2002 over two generations. Originally developed by South Korean manufacturer Daewoo Motors and marketed as the Daewoo Kalos, the takeover of Daewoo by GM to form GM Daewoo Auto & Technology (GMDAT) resulted in the car's marketing in 120 countries under seven brands (Chevrolet, Daewoo, ZAZ, Holden, Pontiac, Ravon and Suzuki) — prominently as the Aveo.

The second-generation Aveo, developed by GM Korea (formerly GMDAT), was introduced in 2011 and was also marketed as the Chevrolet Sonic in markets including the Americas, Japan, Middle East, South Africa and several Southeast Asian markets. Production of the second-generation model ended in October 2020.

Since 2017, GM marketed the Chinese market Chevrolet Sail sedan in Mexico and other Central American countries as the Aveo. Developed by GM PATAC in China and produced by joint venture SAIC-GM, it was positioned below the more advanced Sonic. In 2023, GM imported a new version to Mexico in a sedan and hatchback form, developed and manufactured by another Chinese joint venture, SAIC-GM-Wuling.

Common 2014 Chevrolet Sonic problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Chevrolet Sonic 2014, several common problems have been reported:

  • Calix Oil Pan/Block Heater Cord: Vehicles equipped with a Calix oil pan/block heater may experience issues in cold temperatures where the insulation on the engine block heater cord can become damaged, exposing the wires. Exposed wires increase the risk of electrical shock and personal injury if handled while plugged in, highlighting a safety concern that needs attention.
  • Failure of Audible Warning Chime: Some Chevrolet Sonic vehicles may fail to provide an audible warning chime when the driver leaves the key in the ignition after turning off the engine and waiting for 10 minutes or longer to open the door. This failure to comply with safety standards can lead to situations where the driver unintentionally leaves the key in the ignition, potentially increasing the risk of theft or other safety issues.
  • Insufficient Welds on Front Fuel Tank Strap Bracket: Due to insufficient welds, the front fuel tank strap bracket may separate from the vehicle, which can lead to the failure of the other tank support. This separation can cause the fuel tank to come loose from the vehicle, resulting in a fuel leak. A fuel leak, especially in the presence of an ignition source, poses a significant fire hazard and safety risk to the driver and passengers.

These reported problems with the Chevrolet Sonic 2014 highlight a range of safety and reliability issues that owners have faced, emphasizing the importance of addressing these concerns to ensure the safety and performance of the vehicle.

Water gets in the electrical connections of sensors and is an issue as it causes check engine light and can decrease power of the acceleration of the vehicle which is a safety hazard. SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-07
  • VIN: 1G1JC5SB6E4
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: The pretensioner cable that secures the end of the seatbelt to the seat frame had severed. I am told the pretensioner has a small explosive inside its barrel that I assume releases some sort of spring internally upon impact of a collision. The release of this spring is supposed to pull the pretensioner cable downwards and by extension pull the seatbelt end tighter. This in conjunction with the seatbelt retractor would then keep the driver or passenger tight to the seat in the event of an accident. I notice the cable for the driver side pretensioner over the last few months had strands of steel breaking until it had finally completely severed. I have kept both halves of the severed cable if inspection is requested. This is an extremely unsafe situation to occur. Had I gotten into an accident with the cable partially or completely broken it would have rendered the seatbelt essentially useless. There were no warning lights or associated codes ever displayed from the vehicle’s computer. There were no inspections done by insurance, police, manufacturer, dealership or any others. I ended up ordering the part online to fix myself. I used all manufacturers torque specs and procedures to replace. I fixed it myself because it was my daily driver vehicle and I needed to have it working safely as soon as possible. When I noticed the cable had completely broken I drove my vehicle home and did not drive it again until I had the new part and it was replaced which was about two weeks later. I had asked the dealer and searched for recalls for my vehicle and neither the dealer nor the nhtsa recall search showed anything regarding issues with the pretensioner cable. I did end up seeing GM had issued a recall for a similar pretensioner cable (about 2500 vehicles) for a few of their full sized trucks and SUVs. The claim was based on where the cable was in the vehicle it had abnormal amounts of metal fatigue from drivers exiting and entering. I believe the same issue happened to me.

AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-03
  • VIN: 1G1JC6SG0E4
  • Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER

There was a recall on this model for airbag issues but my vehicle specifically was not recalled. My vehicle was recalled for catalytic converter but I'm still getting codes. Most of the problems the Sonic has been recalled for, my vehicle has symptoms of but I get cannot afford to pay repair cost up front and I cannot find a mechanic who would be willing to take the steps to report my vehicle should've been apart of the recall.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-15
  • VIN: 1G1JC6SH2E4
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: My auto started out with a Check Engine Light. I noticed the engine smelled of overheated radiator and coolant smell. Parts were replaced for fix (Hose)...but check engine light continued as well as the overheated coolant smell. The auto was placed for checking on machine for codes for check engine light, but none of codes made sense to Mechanic. Told to bring back for further testing/looks. Brought back several times. No idea what was wrong but last time I was told I needed to leave for extended testing and test driving as gears were not shifting in D struggled engine for me, no acceleration and RPMs raced at times. (Dangerous and unpredictable on highway and in town). Now I turned in for testing to Chev Mechanic, and now am facing a part that was replaced in control of electrical (over $500) and after they repaired that and tested I am told that I have a TOTAL TRANSMISSION REPAIR over $5200 - for a 2014 auto!!! It was in with dealership mechanics a total of 6-7 times. I was informed the electrical controls were confusing the engine reactions. Auto a dealers for $5200 + $500 repairs now 20230702 and problems seen & looked at since March for smell of overheating radiator, fix if hose (wonder if really needed), continued check engine light, refill of radiator fluid, codes checked and did not give correct evaluation. Eventually the transmission needs replaced out, at time that there is RPM revs, no acceleration while driving and gears heard to struggle in engine. Mileage now over 97000. Estimate on mileage, i do not have all documentation before me. Extended Powertrain warranty from dealership started at year 2015!!! Anything older not allowed, so I am told I have to pay the entire bill.

SUSPENSION,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-03
  • VIN: 1G1JE6SB6E4
  • Components: SUSPENSION,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Overall and to the best of my knowledge, the malfunctioning and failures on my vehicle were the suspension and engine. They are the culprits and it’s honestly very scary and traumatizing to have them completely fail, especially since no one is ever prepared for accidents and/or potential death to happen. Otherwise it wouldn’t be called an accident. With the suspension overall, it’s just awful. CV Axel, control arms, everything with the suspension just failed. With driving over the tiniest bump on the road you feel your is about to literally fall apart at any minute because of the clunking and metal in metal noises it produces. The engine is faulty as well and I am pretty sure the faulty engine happens due to the faulty suspension. When I look under my car there’s something leaking. I don’t know what it is, but it’s poses a safety risk not only for the driver and the passengers, but also to the rest of the world. I know that there was a recall early on about fuel tank breakage or something that could lead to fire ignition. But my vehicle according to my VIN wasn’t on this recall. I have contacted the dealership and a certified service center to inspect these issues. It’s been roughly 4 weeks now and they have been extremely negligent and apathetic. With these issues, everyone’s safety is at risk. My suspension went out and could’ve caused a more catastrophic accident. A fire could’ve broken out with other vehicles surrounding me cause major injuries and death. I’ve seen and read many posts and testimonials and threads online from various independent resources that state very very closely the same issues. Almost verbatim. I’ve been trying to get these issues inspected by the dealership, but they all give me the runaround and don’t want to fix not find a solution. The check engine light has always been on since I’ve Owen the vehicle and the dealership where I purchased this vehicle said having the check engine light on is okay. I need help getting repairs done!

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-01-04
  • VIN: 1G1JE6SB1E4
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Since January I’ve consistently had issues with my 2014 Chevy Sonic Hatchback, in particular, Codes 84, P2138, check engine light and traction control lights. (my job has us all working from home since March of 2020, so I only do local shopping, no long distance). Due to the codes mentioned above, my car was “repaired” at dealership on January 4, 2012. In the end of March I was constantly getting the same codes over a period of two days. I called GM (1 800 462 8782) on March 29, spoke with a woman by the name of Michelle and I explained what has been happening with the vehicle codes, along with other issues over the past year. She opened a case file # 9-6627321866 and she called the dealership to discuss my issue. I was told to drop the car off and it will be repair at no cost to me. The car was brought to dealership on April 7, 2021 and when the diagnostic was preformed, it showed no codes in the history. They did no repair at that time and gave me back the car. While running local errand on April 17, all the same codes appeared and once again I had reduced engine power. I was near the dealership and dropped off the vehicle, even though the service department was closed at that time. Once again, a new pedal and sensor was installed. I told them to please keep the vehicle for a few days, test drive it once in a while to ensure it is truly repaired. They test drove it several times during the 4 days they had it and since there were no issues, I picked the vehicle up on April 22, 2021.On June 5, while driving to a store a nearby store, I was stopped at a light to make a left turn and all the codes suddenly came on. I had very little acceleration making the left turn. The vehicle approaching me which was a block and a half away was now very closely approaching me and luckily realized I had an issue and stopped. I immediately headed back home. AutoZone ran a diagnostic and it's the same issue.

  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Buick Encore all-wheel-drive vehicles manufactured August 23, 2012, to September 9, 2013; Verano vehicles manufactured August 8, 2012, to June 20, 2013; Chevrolet Cruze vehicles manufactured August 7, 2012, to August 16, 2013, and 2012-2014 Chevrolet Sonic vehicles manufactured May 10, 2011, to August 16, 2012 equipped with a Calix oil pan/block heater. In cold temperatures, the insulation on the engine block heater cord can become damaged, allowing the wires to be exposed.
  • Consequence: Exposed wires increase the risk of electrical shock and personal injury if the cord is handled while it is plugged in.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the engine oil pan/block heater cord with a new cord that is rated for temperatures of minus 40 degree Celsius. The recall began in August 2014. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 14257.

  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:MOUNTING
  • Summary: General Motors (GM) is recalling certain model year 2013 and 2014 Chevrolet Sonic vehicles manufactured August 2, 2013, through August 12, 2013. Due to insufficient welds, the front fuel tank strap bracket may separate from the vehicle.
  • Consequence: If the front fuel tank strap bracket separates, the increased load may lead to the failure of the other tank support. As a result, the fuel tank may come loose from the vehicle causing a fuel leak. A fuel leak, in the presence of an ignition source, may result in a fire.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front fuel tank strap bracket, and repair it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on November 7, 2013. Owners may contact GM at 1-800-521-7300. GM's recall campaign number is 13296.

Negative 2014 Chevrolet Sonic car reviews

When I first bought the car, I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. Looking back, I should have taken that as a sign. I purchased it with 63xMiles and have since added 36x Miles. Although I've had to replace the air intake hose, which was a $16 fix, I recently had to replace the water pump due to sporadic coolant spewing after driving, leaving puddles under the passenger tire. Additionally, the engine has started ticking loudly. As a result, I've decided to trade it in and look for a midsize sedan. Despite having the car for less than two years, I'm content with my decision. The hatchback is surprisingly spacious, even more so than the sedan. However, the trunk is quite small, and there are some electrical issues, which I've heard are common. For instance, the lights on the dashboard will dim and brighten for no apparent reason, and I can't tell how hot or cold the engine is. The dealership couldn't even navigate the computerized menu to find it. The backseat is also cramped, but that's to be expected with a small car. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this car.

My experience with this car has been disappointing due to several issues that have arisen. Despite being initially rated well and of high quality, the valve seals have failed three times and the turbo has failed at 120k miles, causing damage to the catalytic converter. The cost of repairs is estimated at $3K, which is more than the car's current value of $2K. While the rest of the car looks brand new, the engine has been a complete disaster and has caused nothing but headaches. Despite my regular maintenance, these issues are clearly Chevrolet quality issues. As a result, I have lost faith in GM products and will not be purchasing another one. It is important to note that this is my personal experience and others may have had different experiences.

I bought my car brand new in 2014. At the time, it was a good fit for my lifestyle and needs. I really appreciated the interior layout and the ability to fold down the seats for extra cargo space. Unfortunately, after only a few months of ownership, the battery exploded and damaged the cables. Although I live in a hot climate, I was surprised that the battery failed so quickly. Thankfully, it was covered under warranty. However, I did experience some cosmetic issues with the car over time. The rearview mirror came loose and fell off, the left driver mirror became loose, the exhaust rattled and caused a lot of noise in the rear end, and the tires constantly needed air. Despite being a careful driver, these issues persisted. I also had to replace the fuel sensor twice, and the battery died again just two weeks ago. In the two years I've owned the car, I've gone through three batteries. Recently, I took a trip to the Grand Canyon and the car struggled to climb the mountains from Phoenix to Northern AZ. It had trouble shifting gears and lacked acceleration. Overall, I would not recommend this car due to the maintenance issues I've experienced. It may be better suited for a teenage driver who doesn't drive in hilly or mountainous areas and doesn't require a lot of space. While the interior is nice and it's fun to drive, the mechanical issues are a concern. Additionally, it may not be the best choice for taller individuals or those with taller children, as the backseat can be cramped.

Although I enjoy driving my car, I have experienced several issues with its reliability. Despite GM's assurance that topping off coolant during oil changes is normal, I have had to constantly refill the coolant due to it being lost. Additionally, I have noticed a strange bucking sensation during the first or second stop on cold damp mornings, which only lasts for a few seconds. Unfortunately, at 49,000 miles, the water pump went bad, and now, only a few months later, the thermostat and water temp sensor have also failed. While I appreciate the car's performance, its reliability has been a major disappointment.

I am experiencing significant buyer's remorse with my current vehicle, a Sonic. The transmission has been unreliable, failing to downshift when necessary and causing frustration. Despite having only 12,000 miles and new Michelin Pilot tires, the car has a low resale value. Additionally, the roof has been painted and suspension parts have been replaced. While I have made efforts to improve the rough idle by using 93 octane fuel and synthetic oil, the gas mileage is only slightly better than my 2000 Nissan Truck. Overall, I am disappointed with the quality of this vehicle and believe that GM should take responsibility for selling such a subpar product.

If you prefer the 'extras' such as a camera, navigation, or entertainment system, consider purchasing a car that includes them. This car rides well, has a great sound system, excellent gas mileage, and handles well. Additionally, the safety features are outstanding, making it a great choice for new drivers as well as more seasoned ones. It is also very reliable, as long as basic maintenance is kept up. I absolutely love this car!

I absolutely love this car! I've been driving it for over a year now and it's been a great experience. As someone who is 6'2

You were lucky to have over $4000 in GM card points that could be transferred to an immediate family member, so a Chevy or GM product was a clear choice. After considering several models, the Sonic Sedan was the best option due to its price, safety, features, and overall performance. Your family member was able to get many of the bells and whistles and still stay within her budget.

I've been the proud owner of this car for a few weeks now. At first, I was a bit hesitant about the size, but having driven a Cobalt a few years back and really enjoying it, I decided to take it for a spin. After the test drive, I was sold and we went ahead and purchased it. I've read some reviews that mention it doesn't get the same gas mileage as other cars in its class, but from what I've gathered, that's due to the weight of the vehicle. To me, that means more durable materials and equipment are used. And with over 30 mpg city driving, I'm more than happy to sacrifice a few mpg for safety. Before this car, I was driving a minivan, so the fuel economy savings are still significant. Last night, the car really proved its worth as I drove home in sleet and freezing rain on roads that had barely been touched by the salt trucks. The Traction Control System and StabiliTrak kicked in a few times, but overall, we stayed on track and had very little trouble. As a mom travelling with my 5-year-old precious cargo safely buckled into a booster seat in the back, I can't say enough about the peace of mind I now have after driving this car on poor roads. Both the front and back seats are comfortable and roomy. I absolutely love the heated front seats, the remote start, and the infotainment system. We even added a portable DVD player to the back seat for my son. Six months in and I'm still loving this car. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

If you're looking to buy a Chevrolet, I would highly recommend this one. Everything about this car is amazing. I have been driving it for about 3 years now and have not encountered any issues. It's perfect! I have been on numerous road trips in this car and it still runs like a brand new car. The emergency assistance and air conditioning work amazingly well. The trunk is also very spacious. Although the car may seem small on the outside, it is actually quite spacious. I would definitely recommend this car!!!
