2005 Toyota Highlander problems
The Toyota Highlander, also known as the Toyota Kluger (Japanese: トヨタ・クルーガー, Hepburn: Toyota Kurūgā), is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by Toyota since 2000.
Announced in April 2000 at the New York International Auto Show and arriving in late 2000 in Japan and January 2001 in North America, the Highlander became one of the first car-based mid-size SUV or mid-size crossovers. The Highlander is the crossover counterpart to the more rugged, truck-based mid-size 4Runner and became Toyota's best-selling SUV before being surpassed by the smaller RAV4 in 2006.
The first-generation model was sold in Japan as the Kluger, which was exclusive to dealership network called Toyota Netz as a larger alternative to the RAV4. The Kluger nameplate is also used in Australia because "Highlander" is a trademarked trim line name owned by Hyundai. The name is derived from the German word klug, which means smart or clever (Klüger – with diacritics – means "someone who is smarter than another" in German).

Common 2005 Toyota Highlander problems
The Toyota Highlander 2005 is known for its smooth ride quality, good handling, and dependability. However, like any vehicle, it has some common problems that potential buyers should be aware of.
One of the most significant issues with the 2005 Toyota Highlander is engine failure, which is often related to stripped engine bolts causing overheating issues. This problem is most common around 120,000 miles but can occur earlier in some cases. Engine failure is a significant issue that some car owners may not be willing to fix, potentially leading to the need for a new car.
Another common problem with the 2005 Toyota Highlander is using engine oil faster than average. While this is a problem that can happen with almost any model of Highlander, it's more familiar with the problem years, including 2005. This issue can be more problematic if the car has other known issues, and it's essential to factor in the additional cost of oil when considering a 2005 Highlander.
There have also been reports of water pump failures in models from 2006 and 2007, which can be a significant inconvenience if not addressed promptly
. Additionally, some models may have airbag problems, which can be a safety concern for drivers and passengers.
Despite these common problems, the 2005 Toyota Highlander is still a highly recommended vehicle by Consumer Reports, indicating that its advantages outweigh its disadvantages
. However, potential buyers should be aware of these issues and factor in the cost of potential repairs when considering purchasing a 2005 Highlander. Regular maintenance, including regular oil changes and tire pressure checks, can help prevent some of these issues and extend the life of the vehicle.

- Summary: MY 2005 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER MASTER BRAKE CYLINDER LOOKS TO BE LEAKING NEAR THE BRAKE BOOSTER. I KNOW THAT IT WAS REPLACED BY TOYOTA DEALER UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 10V499000. HOWEVER I DO NOT REMEMBER THE YEAR. I WAS DRIVING ON LOCAL STREETS, WHEN I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND IT WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. THE NEXT TIME I TRIED TO STEP ON THE PEDAL IT WAS WORKING OK. BUT THEN THE 3RD TIME I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL IT WAS GOING ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AGAIN. THIS WAS A SHOCKED SINCE IT GOT ME TO WORK 9 HOURS EARLIER WITH NO ISSUE. I GOT HOME AND CHECKED THE BRAKE FLUID LEVEL AND LOOKED TO BE AT THE CORRECT LEVEL. I DID NOT DRIVE UNTIL NEXT DAY TO TAKE IT TO MY LOCAL MECHANIC, WHO TOLD ME IT WAS THE MASTER BRAKE CYLINDER. HE STATED THAT THERE WAS A SMALL LEAK INSIDE THE BRAKE BOOSTER AND NEEDED TO REPLACE THE WHOLE MASTER BRAKE CYLINDER. IT STILL IS IN THE SHOP, HOWEVER I REMEMBERED THAT IT WAS "SWAPPED OUT" WITH A NEW ONE UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 10V499000. COULD IT BE POSSIBLE THAT THE RECALLED FOR THE NEW PART IS STILL DOING THE SAME THING? I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF I CAN GET REPLACED AGAIN UNDER THE RECALL, OR HAVE TO PAY THE $550 FOR NEW PART AND LABOR. THANK YOU

NOW IT IS PARTLY IN MY LINE OF SIGHT (I'M 6'3") AND WHEN I HIT A BUMP IT DROPS DOWN EVEN FURTHER AND BLOCKS ABOUT HALF OF MY VISION OUT THE WINDSHIELD. VERY DANGEROUS. BEFORE I START DRIVING, I CAN GENTLY RAISE IT AND SLOWLY LET IT DROP TO WHERE IT STOPS WHERE IT ONLY PARTIALLY BLOCKS MY VISION. AS LONG AS I CAN AVOID BUMPS/POTHOLES, IT WILL STAY BUT IT DOESN'T TAKE MUCH OF A BUMP TO KNOCK IT LOOSE TO WHERE IT DROPS DOWN FURTHER AND BECOMES A SAFETY HAZARD BY BLOCKING TOO MUCH OF MY VISION. THIS STARTED SOME YEARS AGO AND HAS STEADILY GOTTEN WORSE.

THE AMOUNT OF ADHESIVE AGENT APPLIED BETWEEN THE OUTER RING AND THE TORSIONAL RUBBER DAMPER (INNER RING) IN THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY MAY BE INADEQUATE. IF THE ADHESIVE IS INSUFFICIENT, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE OUTER RING MAY BECOME MISALIGNED AND IT MAY NOT PROPERLY ROTATE WITH THE INNER RING, CAUSING NOISE AND/OR ILLUMINATION OF THE BATTERY DISCHARGE INDICATOR LIGHT.
- Consequence: IN SOME CASES, THE BELT FOR THE POWER STEERING PUMP MAY BECOME DETACHED FROM THE PULLEY WHICH COULD RESULT IN A LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND A SUDDEN INCREASE IN STEERING EFFORT, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: TOYOTA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL CHECK THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY TO IDENTIFY WHETHER IT WAS PRODUCED BY THE U.S. SUPPLIER. IF SO, THE DEALER WILL REPLACE THE PULLEY WITH A NEW ONE AT NO CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING EARLY JANUARY 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.
- Manufacturer: TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL
- Summary: TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2006 HIGHLANDER, HIGHLANDER HYBRID, AND MODEL YEAR 2004-2007 LEXUS RX330, RX350, AND RX400H VEHICLES. IF THE FORWARD RETENTION CLIP USED TO SECURE THE FLOOR CARPET COVER, WHICH IS LOCATED IN FRONT OF THE CENTER CONSOLE, IS NOT INSTALLED PROPERLY THE COVER MAY LEAN TOWARD THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND INTERFERE WITH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ARM.
- Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY TEMPORARILY BECOME STUCK IN A PARTIALLY DEPRESSED POSITION RATHER THAN RETURN TO THE IDLE POSITION. A STUCK ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY RESULT IN UNINTENDED AND SUSTAINED VEHICLE SPEEDS AND MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO STOP, INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FLOOR CARPET COVER WITH A NEWLY DESIGNED ONE FREE OR CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MARCH 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

BRAKE FLUID CONTAINING POLYMERS IS USED THAT ACTS AS LUBRICANTS FOR CERTAIN BRAKE SYSTEM COMPONENTS. IF REPLACEMENT BRAKE FLUID IS USED THAT DOES NOT CONTAIN SUCH POLYMERS, OR THAT CONTAINS ONLY SMALL AMOUNTS, A PART OF THE RUBBER SEAL LOCATED AT THE REAR OF THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER MAY BECOME DRY, AND THE SEAL MAY CURL DURING MOVEMENT OF THE PISTON. IF THIS OCCURS, A SMALL AMOUNT OF BRAKE FLUID COULD SLOWLY LEAK FROM THE SEAL INTO THE BRAKE BOOSTER.
- Consequence: A LEAK OF BRAKE FLUID COULD LEAD TO A CHANGE IN BRAKE PEDAL FEEL AND OVERTIME A DEGRADATION IN BRAKING PERFORMANCE INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SEAL WITH A NEWLY DESIGNED ONE. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 15, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331 AND LEXUS AT 1-800-255-3987.

Positive 2005 Toyota Highlander car reviews

I absolutely adore my 2005 Highlander! It has been such a reliable car that we can't seem to find a reason to replace it. I purchased it used in 2006 with only 20k miles and have since added over 90k miles. The fact that I'm getting an average of 25 miles per gallon on the highway and about 20 in the city for a V6 is simply fantastic. This car holds so many memories for me - we've been on countless road trips together. Aside from the standard 90k maintenance to replace the belts, pump, etc., and regular 5k mile maintenance, I've only had one issue - the fuel cap needed replacing at 108k miles. I suppose we'll wait another two years and then replace it around 150k with either a Lexus RX or another Highlander!

I chose the FWD option as I didn't think I needed AWD, and I'm very pleased with my purchase. The ride is comfortable and quiet. Although I would have been content with the 4-cylinder, I decided to go with the Limited V6 model for the increased towing capacity. Deciding between the Highlander and the Pilot was difficult, as both vehicles were equally important to me in terms of safety, reliability, and comfort (in that order). I believe the Toyota offers better visibility, and I personally prefer the Highlander's appearance over the Pilot's.

This is a fantastic automobile. I am thrilled with my purchase, especially since my wife and I just had our first child. It has great safety features, is very comfortable, and has plenty of room. It's the perfect car for starting a young family. Plus, its safety features and record have even reduced our insurance premiums!

I absolutely love my HIGHLANDER! It has all the right ingredients to make it a fun and easy to maneuver sport vehicle, while also providing a hint of luxury. The plush interior and slick external curves make it a joy to drive. With over 200 HP, it still yields great gas mileage at up to 30 miles per gallon on the freeway. I have even towed 3000 pounds with ease. Mechanically, the vehicle is sound and I have not had a single problem. It has gotten me through 2 feet of snow, black ice, and a hurricane, always keeping me and my family safe. I am so impressed with this vehicle that when it's time to purchase another one, I will definitely be getting another HIGHLANDER!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my SUV. I purchased it back in 2005 and it has been running smoothly ever since! I've read some reviews from other consumers about their tires, but I haven't had to replace mine until 56k miles. Currently, my SUV has 99k miles and I still haven't had to replace my second set of tires yet. The condition of my SUV is still very good and the interior is incredibly comfortable and spacious. I absolutely love it!

The car's five-speed transmission could use some improvement, as it can feel rather rough at times. Additionally, first gear may not be as useful as one would hope. The car's handling is decent, but it could benefit from some refinement. Occasionally, the car may hesitate or stumble, similar to an older car with a carburetor. Unfortunately, gas mileage has been a major disappointment. As one reviewer mentioned, the paint may be prone to scratches. While this may not be the best Toyota I have owned, I am still interested in seeing what the trade-in value will be.

My husband and I recently purchased the Highlander after conducting extensive research. We were particularly impressed by Toyota's reputation for reliability, which played a significant role in our decision-making process. Additionally, the Highlander's gas mileage exceeded our expectations, with my 6-cylinder model consistently achieving 25-plus miles per gallon. While the exterior design could be more eye-catching, I have found the vehicle to be highly functional and reliable. The only minor issue I have encountered is with the steering wheel audio controls, as my thumb occasionally hits the 'mode' button while driving, inadvertently turning on the stereo. Overall, we are very satisfied with our purchase and would highly recommend the Highlander to others.

The car has a few issues that we can address. Firstly, there is a hesitation problem that can be dangerous if not taken care of. Secondly, the transmission shifts at odd rpm levels which can be a bit rough. Thirdly, there is an annoying rattle coming from the rear hatch door. Fourthly, the car can be difficult to start at times. Fifthly, the AC/heat controls can be a bit tricky to moderate. Lastly, there are a few other minor issues that we can take care of. Rest assured, we will do our best to make sure your Toyota product is running smoothly.

Our 2005 Highlander Limited has become our family car and we have been very happy with it. However, we did notice a small 'bubble' spot on both side mirrors from day one, which eventually grew into a blister and popped. We later found out that the mirrors were never primed prior to painting. We brought this to the dealer's attention while it was still under warranty, but unfortunately, they did not take any action. Now, 6 years later, the mirrors have peeled and Toyota is not taking responsibility. We advise inspecting your vehicle for any flaws in the paint, no matter how small, and having them fixed prior to purchase to save yourself money and grief.

The car has some issues with handling on snow and ice, and the brakes tend to grab when slowing down from 60 to 50. Additionally, the brake pedal occasionally goes to the floor after a cold start up. However, the dealer has assured me that there is nothing wrong with the car. The car is also overly sensitive at higher speeds. Another issue is that there is no tinting, which can make the car uncomfortably hot in the sun. The brake pedal to steering wheel distance is also a bit weird, and adjusting the seat for comfort can cause fatigue as you have to extend your arms to reach the steering wheel. This may not be the best car for someone with longer legs, as the third seat is only suitable for people weighing 30 lbs or less. Unfortunately, the rear door window cannot be opened separately. Lastly, the light cloth interior gets dirty easily, and the driver window is very sensitive. Despite these issues, I believe that this car can still be a good choice for those who prioritize comfort and convenience over performance.
