2017 Toyota 86 problems
The Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ are 2+2 sports cars jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru, manufactured at Subaru's Gunma assembly plant.
The 2+2 fastback coupé has a naturally-aspirated boxer engine, front-engined, rear-wheel-drive configuration, 53/47 front/rear weight balance and low centre of gravity; it was inspired by Toyota's earlier AE86, a small, light, front-engine/rear-drive Corolla variant widely popular for Showroom Stock, Group A, Group N, Rally, Club and drift racing.
For the first-generation model, Toyota marketed the sports car as the 86 in Asia, Australia, North America (from August 2016), South Africa, and South America; as the Toyota GT86 in Europe; as the 86 and GT86 in New Zealand; as the Toyota FT86 in Brunei, Nicaragua and Jamaica and as the Scion FR-S (2012–2016) in the United States and Canada.
The second-generation model is marketed by Toyota as the GR86 as part of the Gazoo Racing family.

Common 2017 Toyota 86 problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2017 Toyota 86, several common problems have been reported:
- Bad Fuel Pump:
- Owners have reported hearing a chirping noise from the fuel pump, leading to premature fuel pump failure. The root cause of this issue was not specified by Toyota, but the recommended solution is to replace the fuel pump promptly.
- Engine Control Unit (ECU) Programming:
- Some owners experienced unstable engine revs in neutral due to incorrect ECU programming. This issue requires reprogramming the ECU to resolve the problem.
- Disabled Interlock System:
- Scion FR-S cars were delivered with the interlock system disabled to prevent transmission damage during transport. Some cars were never reconnected, leading to issues. Toyota issued a recall to correct this problem in early 2016.
- Cracked Oil Drain Plug:
- The oil drain plug in the Toyota 86 is prone to cracking from over-torquing, resulting in oil leaks. Replacing the cracked drain plug is the recommended solution for this issue.
- Clutch Release Bearing Failure:
- Many 2013 FR-S owners faced clutch release bearing failure, especially in cold weather conditions. Symptoms include grinding gears, high clutch position, and difficult shifting. Failure to replace the clutch release bearing promptly can lead to damage to the transmission housing, pressure plate, or shaft.
- Engine Valve Spring Issue:
- Early GT86 models built between April 9, 2012, and May 24, 2013, experienced problems with valve springs breaking in the engine. This issue was addressed through a recall to replace the faulty valve springs with improved components.
- Loss of Power Steering Assistance:
- Some early Toyota GT86 models had issues with the power steering system due to wiring harness problems. This issue affected cars built between April 4, 2012, and March 18, 2015. Affected cars required a new wiring harness to resolve the power steering problem, which was carried out by Toyota dealers free of charge as part of a recall.
These common problems reported by owners of the 2017 Toyota 86 highlight various technical issues that have been encountered with this model, emphasizing the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any emerging concerns to ensure the vehicle's optimal performance and safety.

The upside is the GT86 is pretty reliable, and potentially under warranty up to 11 years old if serviced with Toyota. You don't say what sort of roads your commute is, but if mostly motorway it could easily do mid-30s+ mpg I think. It's fairly spacious for the driver.

I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed driving the car! It sounds like it handled the curves on the California backroads really well. It's a shame that you didn't end up purchasing it due to the lack of leather seats and the racing stripes on the special edition, but I hope you're still happy with your purchase of the Limited BRZ Automatic.

It seems like the clutch is a bit too sensitive, while the brake may not be sensitive enough.

I've been driving this car daily for commuting to work and back, and I haven't had any issues at all. I've just kept up with the regular maintenance and recommended services. I highly recommend this car to anyone who wants a car to drive as either a daily or a little sports car with not an overwhelming amount of power.
