The Suzuki Swift (Japanese: スズキ・スイフト, Suzuki Suifuto) is a supermini car (B-segment) produced by Suzuki. The vehicle is classified as a B-segment marque in the European single market, a segment referred to as a supermini in the British Isles. Prior to this, the "Swift" nameplate had been applied to the rebadged Suzuki Cultus in numerous export markets since 1985 and for the Japanese-market Suzuki Ignis since 2000. The Swift became its own model in 2004. Currently, the Swift is positioned between Ignis and Baleno in Suzuki's global hatchback lineup.

Predecessors

International (1985–2003)

The Suzuki Swift nameplate began in 1985 as an export name for the Suzuki Cultus, a supermini (or subcompact) manufactured and marketed worldwide since 1983 across three generations and four body configurations—three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, five-door hatchback and two-door convertible—and using the Suzuki G engine family. The third generation was only sold in North America; the second generation remained in production for other markets across the world.

The Swift was marketed in the Japanese street domestic market (JDM) as the Cultus and elsewhere as the Suzuki SA310, Suzuki Swift, Suzuki Forsa, Chevrolet Swift, Chevrolet Sprint and Sprint Metro, Geo and Chevrolet Metro, Pontiac Firefly, Maruti 1000, Holden Barina and Subaru Justy. Versions of the second generation Cultus were also produced until 2007 in India and the car remained in production until 2016 in Pakistan and China.

Common 1997 Suzuki Swift problems

The 1997 Suzuki Swift is known for its affordability, fuel efficiency, and compact size, making it a popular choice for many drivers. However, like any vehicle, it has certain common problems that owners have reported over the years.

One issue that has been reported is related to the engine's vitals. As the car ages, components such as the compression system may wear out, leading to engine problems. Therefore, it's essential to regularly check the engine's vitals to ensure that it's running smoothly and efficiently.

Another problem that has been reported is related to the continuously variable transmission (CVT). The CVT is a complex system that relies on physical parts like bands and pulleys, as well as hydraulic components, to operate. If any of these components become damaged or worn out, they can cause the CVT to malfunction, leading to rough running, stalling, and excessive fuel consumption.

In some cases, the problem may be caused by a faulty sensor that is providing incorrect information to the engine's computer. Modern engines use dozens of sensors to monitor various aspects of the engine's operation, and if just one of these sensors fails, it can cause the engine to run poorly or stall. To diagnose this problem, it's best to have the car electronically scanned to identify the faulty sensor, which can then be replaced.

The Suzuki Swift's Bluetooth connectivity has also been reported as a problem by some owners. To connect a mobile phone to the car's Bluetooth system, the vehicle must be stationary, and the phone's Bluetooth must be set to discoverable. The setup button on the car's media-control panel must then be pressed, and the setup menu selected. From there, the user can select Pairing and then confirm the selection. The phone's Bluetooth menu must then be selected, and the car audio option chosen to establish the pairing. Finally, the passkey code displayed on the screen must be entered on the phone to confirm the pairing.

It's worth noting that the 1997 Suzuki Swift is now over 25 years old, and like any car of this age, it may simply be worn out. Therefore, it's essential to check the car's history and maintenance records to ensure that it has been well cared for and maintained over the years.

In summary, the 1997 Suzuki Swift is known for its affordability, fuel efficiency, and compact size. However, like any vehicle, it has certain common problems that owners have reported over the years, including engine problems, CVT malfunctions, faulty sensors, and Bluetooth connectivity issues. To ensure that the car runs smoothly and efficiently, it's essential to regularly check the engine's vitals, diagnose and fix any faulty sensors, and maintain the car's Bluetooth connectivity.
