2008 Subaru Tribeca problems
The Subaru Tribeca is a mid-size crossover SUV made from 2005 to 2014. Released in some markets, including Canada, as the Subaru B9 Tribeca, the car derives its name from the Tribeca neighborhood of New York City. Built on the Subaru Legacy platform and sold in five- and seven-seat configurations, the Tribeca was intended to be sold alongside a slightly revised version known as the Saab 9-6X. Saab, at the time a subsidiary of General Motors (GM), abandoned the 9-6X program just prior to its release subsequent to GM's 2005 divestiture of its 20 percent stake in FHI.
Inspired by the B9X concept car, the Tribeca's original design was criticized at launch and subsequently revised in 2007 for the 2008 model year, and the model name was shortened to simply Tribeca in all markets.
Although not sold in Japan, North American markets received the Tribeca in 2005 for the 2006 model year, and it was introduced to Australasia and Europe in late 2006. In addition to these markets, the Tribeca was also sold in South America, South Africa, China, the Middle East, and parts of Southeast Asia.

Common 2008 Subaru Tribeca problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2008 Subaru Tribeca, several common problems have been reported:
- Doors Fail to Lock or Unlock:
- Some Tribeca owners experienced issues with the power locks not activating properly. This could result in doors locking when opening a window and not unlocking when the car is put into Park. The problem was resolved by replacing the door and window modules.
- Puddle Light Shorts Out:
- Owners of 2008 to 2012 Tribeca models reported that the welcome puddle lights would stop working due to water collecting in the side mirror, corroding electrical connections, and melting the housing. A recall was issued to seal the wiring harness and address this issue.
- Rust on Front Brake Rotors:
- Some 2010 Tribeca owners reported significant rust on the front brake rotors after relatively low mileage. The solution involved replacing the affected rotors to resolve the problem.
- Door Flying Open While Car is in Motion:
- A limited number of 2010 Tribeca owners experienced their doors flying open while driving due to incorrectly run power cables for the windows in the front doors. A recall was issued to inspect and reposition the cabling as necessary.
- Suspension Squeak:
- Owners of 2008 Tribeca models reported a strange squeak in the suspension, particularly noticeable during wet weather. While some dealers confirmed the noise, it was not associated with any mechanical failures and tended to diminish in warm, dry weather.
- Ignition Switch Issue:
- Some of the earliest Tribeca vehicles had a manual keyed ignition that allowed the car to shut off while in motion. This was caused by the key switching to the accessory position due to the weight of the key ring or the driver's knee. A recall required Subaru to replace defective ignition switches to address this safety concern.
These problems highlight various issues that owners of the 2008 Subaru Tribeca have faced, emphasizing the importance of addressing these issues promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-01-06
- VIN: 4S4WX91D284
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: WHEN THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE DIPS BELOW 20 DEGREES F, THE BRAKES FAIL TO WORK. THIS HAS HAPPENED 5 TIMES NOW IN THE YEAR 2014. THIS HAS HAPPENED EACH TIME MY CAR HAS SAT OUT IN THE COLD TEMPERATURES (<20 DEGREES) FOR 8 HOURS (WHILE AT WORK). WHEN PULLING OUT OF MY SPACE IN THE OUTDOOR PARKING GARAGE, MY BRAKE PEDAL BECOMES HARD AND I AM UNABLE TO DEPRESS IT. MY CAR WILL NOT STOP. APPLYING HARD PRESSURE SLOWS IT DOWN. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON DRY PAVEMENT. I ONCE HAD TO USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP. IT HAS ALSO OCCURRED ONCE AFTER I WAS OPERATING THE CAR FOR AT LEAST 15 MINUTES. I HAVE HAD THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP TWICE IN THE LAST 3 MONTHS SINCE THIS STARTED. EACH TIME THEY ARE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND CANNOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. I HAVE ALSO EMAILED SUBARU CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY STATED THE DEALERSHIP WOULD HAVE TO DUPLICATE THE BRAKE PROBLEM IN ORDER TO FIX IT. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN; NOT TO MENION I HAVE 2 SMALL CHILDREN TRAVELING IN THE CAR WITH ME. NO ONE SEEMS THAT WORRIED ABOUT IT BUT ME. IT IS ALL OVER INTERNET CAR FORUMS THAT THIS HAPPENS WITH SUBARU BRAKES WHEN THE TEMPERATURES DIP. THE DEALERSHIP AND SUBARU CLAIM THEY HAVE NOT HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM. I AM EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED WITH SUBARU.

LEFT CAR OUT DURING BELOW FREEZING WEATHER 2 MORE TIMES, SAME PROBLEM--NO BRAKES. VACUUM ASSIST FOR BRAKES WOULD NOT WORK IN BELOW FREEZING WEATHER. TOOK CAR TO SUBARU DEALER, ALL 3 VACUUM HOSE BRAKES REPLACED. DEALER STATES THAT EACH HOSE HAS A CHECK VALVE IN IT FOR THE VACUUM SYSTEM. FORTUNATELY WE DISCOVERED THIS PROBLEM AT A VERY LOW RATE OF SPEED. NO VACUUM ASSIST FOR THE BRAKES MAKES THIS CAR VIRTUALLY UNSTOPPABLE AT ALMOST ANY SPEED. WHAT IF IT WOULD HAVE BEEN ON A MOUNTAIN ROAD?? DEATH WOULD BE EMINENT. I FEEL THIS SHOULD BE UNDER RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED OR MAIMED. *TR

BOTH THE HOOD AND THE WINDSHIELD WERE DAMAGED. THE INCIDENT HAPPENED 35 MINUTES AFTER THE START OF THE TRIP. THERE WERE NO BUMPS ON THE ROAD AND NO OTHER VEHICLES WERE INVOLVED IN THE INCIDENT. THE HOOD WAS LAST OPENED BY A SUBARU MECHANIC DURING AN OIL CHANGE ABOUT 2 MONTHS PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT. NO SIMILAR PROBLEMS OCCURRED PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT. THERE WAS NO INDICATION THAT THE HOOD WAS NOT PROPERLY CLOSED. FURTHERMORE, THE SECOND SAFETY LATCH DIDN'T APPEAR TO HAVE WORKED EVEN IF THE FIRST GAVE WAY. SUBARU WAS CONTACTED AND I WAS TOLD THIS WAS AN INSURANCE ISSUE AS THEY CLAIMED THERE WERE NO RECALLS (EVEN THOUGH I INSISTED THAT NO RECALLS WAS NO INDICATION THAT THIS WAS NOT EITHER A MANUFACTURING OR A DESIGN DEFECT. *TR

2008 Subaru Tribeca recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 9 recalls for different components of the 2008 Subaru Tribeca.
- Manufacturer: Subaru of America, Inc.
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
- Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2009-2013 Forester vehicles, 2008-2011 Impreza vehicles, 2008-2014 WRX vehicles, 2005-2014 Legacy vehicles, 2005-2014 Outback vehicles and 2006-2008 Tribeca vehicles equipped with a mechanical key ignition switch installed as a replacement part. The ball spring inside the switch may break, reducing the strength of the ignition switch. If this occurs, the weight on the key ring and certain road conditions could cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position to the accessory position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: The engine turning off unexpectedly can increase the risk of a crash. If a crash occurs under this condition, the air bag may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ignition switch, replacing the ignition switch, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began May 10, 2019. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WUF-91.

- Components: STRUCTURE:BODY:HOOD
- Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2006-2014 Tribeca vehicles manufactured November 16, 2004, to January 27, 2014. Due to a possible malfunction of the hood safety system and hood lock system, the hood may open unexpectedly while driving.

Tribeca is such a fun car to drive! I really like the cool-looking instrument panel that is also easy to read. The interior design is great too. The front seats make you feel like you're in a cockpit, not just any regular car seat. However, it is a bit tighter on space compared to other similar SUVs. Unfortunately, the mileage is a bit disappointing as we're only getting just over 15mpg with all city/local driving.

Great all around vehicle! It does OK on gas and looks and drives fantastic. It's the best large vehicle I've ever owned.
-
I purchased the '08 Tribeca 6 months ago and I am very happy with the vehicle. Unlike my previous Audi A4, which was one problem after another, the Tribeca is more comfortable, has a smoother drive, and is more reliable. I would definitely get it again!

I hope you're enjoying your new vehicle! It sounds like you made a great choice. The ride and handling are fantastic, and the AWD system is definitely a confidence booster. I'm glad to hear that the navigation system is user-friendly, although it's a shame that it's a bit far away. The redesign seems to have done wonders for the rear seat room, especially with the 7 passenger option that includes rear AC controls. The handling is precise and the acceleration with the new 3.6 liter engine is a significant improvement over the previous generation.

It's great to hear that your 2008 Tribeca is still running like new in 2022! While the fuel economy may not be the best, it's wonderful to know that you haven't experienced any issues with it.

The headlights of this car require frequent replacement, and the gas mileage is subpar. However, the car has been low maintenance overall, with the exception of the brakes and headlights. Given my experience, I would carefully consider before purchasing another Subaru.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with our Tribeca, which we purchased about 18 months ago. Initially, I rated it very highly. However, we have encountered some issues recently that have been quite frustrating. We have been stranded three times and have had to make numerous trips to the dealer, but unfortunately, the problems have not been resolved. From the beginning, there has been a noise in the engine that the dealer and factory reps have heard but have been unable to pinpoint. Additionally, it burns oil, although not enough to meet their oil consumption criteria. The steering column has also locked up on multiple occasions, which has been quite concerning. Unfortunately, we have been unable to duplicate the condition, which has made it difficult for the dealer to repair. As a result, we have decided that this will be our first and last Subaru. I hope this feedback is helpful and that you have a great day!

From the beginning of owning the car, we noticed an engine noise similar to that of a broken muffler. We also noticed that the engine oil level dropped when it was still a new car. Unfortunately, Lynns Subaru dealer did not address these issues and told us that it was normal for the Tribeca. As the car got older, it required more frequent additions of oil, especially after a long drive. The tailpipes also had black burned oil deposits. We asked Victory Subaru dealer to fix the oil burning, but they told us that there was nothing wrong. We also experienced many mechanical and electrical problems, such as the driver side window detaching from the rolling mechanism, power steering failing while driving, and the radiator hose bursting and leaking coolant, which required the car to be towed. Although the cruise control never worked due to a number of engine warning signs popping up intermittently, Victory Subaru dealer was unable to fix any of these issues. Instead, they made us change the CV Boots and Booshings well before their lifetime and charged us almost $4000. Despite these issues, we have had a good experience with Subaru in the past. However, we have simply had enough problems and irresponsible dealer services with this car and have decided to sell it below market value. We will not be purchasing another Subaru for ourselves, our friends, coworkers, or neighbors. We hope that Subaru will improve their quality control and address these design faults. Thank you for your understanding.

I bought my last Subaru two years ago, based on its reputation for reliability. Unfortunately, I experienced what appeared to be slippage of the torque converter within the first few days of ownership. This caused a sensation like an engine 'miss' in 5th gear (torque converter locked). Despite numerous visits to dealerships and attempts to fix the problem, including two new torque converters and adjustments to the computer and solenoids, the issue has persisted for two years. I have been disappointed with the lack of response from Subaru Canada. Additionally, I have noticed poor brake performance and knocking in the front suspension. It seems like I am stuck with this vehicle.

This SUV is a great choice, with features that rival even my previous Acura MDX. Despite some minor issues, such as the AC and pocket behind the driver's seat, which were not covered by the extended warranty, I am confident in its overall quality. I have scheduled to have the fuel door fixed this Saturday and am sure that the issue with the passenger door can be resolved as well. While the gas mileage range is 17-21, I have consistently seen a respectable 19 mpg. Overall, I am pleased with my purchase and confident in its reliability.
