2019 Subaru Crosstrek problems

subaru logo

The Subaru Crosstrek (Japanese: スバル・クロストレック, Hepburn: Subaru Kurosutorekku) (also known as the Subaru XV globally for the first two generations) is a compact crossover SUV produced by Subaru since 2012. It is a successor to the Outback Sport in the United States and Canada, and the Impreza XV globally. Like the Outback Sport, the Crosstrek is a lifted Impreza hatchback with minor differences, though with a more substantial lift than the Outback Sport.

Initially, the vehicle was marketed as the XV globally, and as the XV Crosstrek in the United States and Canada. In 2015, Subaru dropped the XV moniker in the United States and Canada, marketing it simply as the Crosstrek for the 2016 model year and onward. In 2022, Subaru introduced the third-generation model, using the Crosstrek nameplate globally for the first time.

All generations of the Crosstrek are raised versions of the Subaru Impreza hatchback.

Common 2019 Subaru Crosstrek problems

The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are the details of these problems:

  • Broken Windshields: Another problem mentioned by 2019 Crosstrek owners is broken windshields, which occur around 5,000 miles. This issue is caused by some batches of windshield glass having more imperfections, leading to them cracking easier. Replacing the windshield costs around $600 to $800, depending on local labor rates.
  • Sudden Acceleration: Some 2019 Crosstrek owners have reported sudden acceleration, which is a serious issue. This problem is caused by electrical and sensor issues in the engine, which may cause it to idle higher than normal, leading to stronger acceleration than expected. Fixing the high-idle problems costs $250 to $400, depending on if there are any damaged sensors or not.
  • Steering Assist Loss: The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek has seven recalls, with the most serious one being for a loss of electronic power steering assist, which can cause an accident. Subaru will replace the steering gearbox for free on affected vehicles.
  • Engine Software and Stabilizer Bracket Bolts: Other recalls cover engine software and stabilizer bracket bolts, which Subaru will also fix for free.
  • Windshield Cracking and Radio Losing Presets: The 2019 Crosstrek is known for having steering, electrical, windshield cracking, and engine problems. Some owners have reported issues with the car's GPS system, which requires an iPhone to work properly. Other problems include the eyesight light on the dash turning on by itself, the radio changing stations on its own, and a knocking/static noise in the front speakers.
  • Premature Rust and Corrosion: Many Subaru models, including the Crosstrek, had an issue with premature rust and corrosion, which is suspected to be caused by road salt in colder areas.

In summary, the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek has several common problems, including a stereo system that freezes, broken windshields, sudden acceleration, steering assist loss, and engine software issues. However, most of these problems are relatively minor compared to other compact SUVs on the market, leading to lower ownership costs as the Crosstrek ages.

Carry Handle, Shell, Base,Tether, Lower Anchor (on car seat or vehicle) PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-24
  • VIN: JF2GTAMC3KH
  • Components: Carry Handle, Shell, Base,Tether, Lower Anchor (on car seat or vehicle)
  • Summary: I have two of the same model car seat for both my wife's and my cars. In the rear facing position, neither car seat locks into the set recline position. Instead it clicks out of what we set it at and slides all the way to the #1 position which is the most reclined. This seems to be a major safety issue and suspiciously Evenflo has discontinued this model which is a somewhat new model. Upon looking up recent online reviews, it seems that many parents have this same issue and significant safety concern. This car seat needs to be investigated ASAP and possibly recalled.

STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-10
  • VIN: JF2GTAEC1KH
  • Components: STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: My 2019 Subaru Crosstrek surges at speeds around 60 MPH, and swerves the vehicle without my control. I have to hold the steering wheel tightly and steer out of the swerve, which is incredibly dangerous on freeways or mountain roads. Apparently, the lane departure assist is the culprit, so now I have to disable the app before I drive. Why would I allow this dangerous application to drive my car for me? I have barely avoided crashing into semi trucks and driving into road shoulders because of this device. I think the car is dangerous. There is yet another dangerous issue with this car. There is another device that disables the transmission while idling in traffic. The steering and transmission are literally locked in place. I had this happen once in a drive through window, and once on a hill, while traffic was stopped for an accident. When the traffic started to move again, 20 minutes later, I could not get my car to start, and I was in front of a mile long line of traffic, coming back to highway speed, completely stopped. A policeman stopped and knew that there was a little " dimple" on my dashboard that would uncover a locking mechanism. If we only had a slender probe that would fit inside the dimple-pencil too big, so was screwdriver. By this time, I had 2 policemen stopped and traffic whizzing by me. An electrician stopped, knew about the dimple too, and had a slender enough rod to fit into the area, slid the locking mechanism to the side, and started the car again. On both of these issues, I called Subaru customer service and Subaru corporate. NOBODY knew what these issues were, never heard of them! The car is inherently dangerous and I am stuck driving it because I financed it only a year ago and can't afford to buy another car. Subaru should at least acknowledge these dangerous issues, and offer me another model without these issues. The 2019 Crosstrek is the model I have that has these dangerous issues. Earlier and later models do not.

  • Summary: The car's hybrid system failed. The problem was a poorly protected electrical cable and connector that is exposed under the car. It corroded and failed. The dealer cleaned it and it works again, but they think the issue will be ongoing. May be related to Manufacturer Recall Number: WRD23 / NHTSA Recall Number:23V080000
2023-02-09

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-01
  • VIN: JF2GTDEC4KH
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The main information panel which displays navigation information under Carplay goes blank for approximately 5 seconds every time the user adjusts the car volume. This appears to be by design. The "feature" creates an unsafe driving situation by forcing the driver's attention to linger on the main panel waiting for navigational or other information, creating an unsafe situation which could cause an accident. In addition, though less threatening, the vehicle's audio volume turns on when the car is started, regardless of whether it was last left off or on. The unexpected volume sound interferes with a driver's initial planning and focus in the vehicle unnecessarily. This unfortunate "feature" is less threatening than the screen blanking resulting from volume adjustment because it occurs before the car begins moving. The volume control screen blanking creates a hazard because it interferes with the driver's access to important information while the vehicle is in motion, tempting the driver to take their eyes off the road waiting for the main screen to once again resume normal operation.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-20
  • Number Of Injuries: 2
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JF2GTANC9KH
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: unexplained acceleration. I was in a parking lot and driving slowly and the car just took off. I had to crash it into the building at the mall to avoid cars and people. The car was totaled and my husband had a broken rib. We were taken to the hospital. Car was inspected and serviced. by the dealership, no problems before this accident, no warnings.
2023-02-05

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-04
  • VIN: JF2GTACC8KH
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: When driving, the car has intermittent random power failures. When you start to accelerate, it does not go even when applying full petal to the floor or letting go and pushing the petal again then it goes rapidly to speed. It is failing to accelerate more frequently and when I brought it in to the dealership twice, they said if I can tell them exactly how and when it is failing they would have a chance at fixing the problem. The problem they say is that it is random. Because of the problem with this we are seriously looking at buying another car. We no longer pull out into traffic because we do not know if it will fail. There are no warning lights on the dash or other indications.
2023-01-09

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-07
  • VIN: JF2GTANC5K8
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The screen display with the oil temp gauge and water temp gauge will randomly turn off while driving as well as sometimes it will not turn on immediately when the car turns on. I have brought this to the dealers attention and nothing has been done, there has been no warning lights on the dash illuminated. This has been going on randomly for the last 6 months. Another issue is that when the bluetooth or carplay is inuse and there is a call in progress the digital speed display is blocked by a screen that says call in progress. This is very dangerous that the digital speed display is blocked when bluetooth or car play is used to make calls. This has many times resulted in me speeding as the speedometer on the car is marked well with tick marks for how big the arm is that tells you how fast you’re going. There is no reason subaru should block the digital speed display. The infotainment system powers off randomly, changes the radio station on its own, and changes the volume on its own. This started in 2019 when I got the car and the issue was observed by the dealer and the radio was replaced. However now that the radio was replaced in 2019 or 2020 the radio has been recently not turning on when the car is started, shutting off in the middle of the drive, and sometimes not even connecting to carplay to use navigation. Subaru won't help me anymore or even look at the car now for this concern without charging an insane diagnostic fee (which is wrong to charge for safety concerns)
2023-01-04

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-04
  • VIN: JF2GTAEC2KH
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: The left rear door would not open from the inside when unlocked. In an emergency, my passenger would not be able to get out on their own.

Negative 2019 Subaru Crosstrek car reviews

  1. Gillian Daniel 2025-04-14

We purchased our first Crosstrek in 2017 and unfortunately, we noticed a persistent coolant smell almost immediately. Although there were no visible leaks, the smell was present both inside and outside the car. Despite the dealer's efforts, they were unable to identify the issue. Shortly after, we began to hear a thumping sound in the front end which was also felt by passengers. Unfortunately, the dealer was unable to replicate or resolve the issue. The final straw was when we were unable to shift the car out of Park. However, the dealer was very understanding and offered us a great deal on a 2019 Crosstrek, which we decided to take a chance on. Unfortunately, the 2019 model has also had its fair share of issues. We experienced a rattling noise in the front end which took three visits to the dealer to resolve. Additionally, the rear wheel bearings had to be replaced at only 15,000 miles and the radio has stopped working intermittently. Although Subaru has agreed to replace the radio, it was difficult to document the issue on video as I usually drive alone. As a result, we have decided to switch back to Honda as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

I drove a 2013 Ford C-Max Energi for six years, but I was looking for a PHEV with all-wheel drive and higher ground clearance. That's when I discovered the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid. On the plus side, the Crosstrek has solid handling, generous ground clearance, and all-wheel drive, making it a great choice for those who love to explore. Additionally, its standard Eyesight safety features work well, providing peace of mind on the road. Although it could use more power, the Crosstrek Hybrid still accelerates sufficiently to get out of its own way when pushed hard enough. On the negative side, I have noticed some minor quality control issues with my Subaru, such as an annoying rattle coming from somewhere in the overhead center console and a section of blue trim on the passenger side that was loose from day one. Another issue I have encountered is the excessively loud pedestrian alert warning sound, which cannot be adjusted despite attempts by the dealership's service department. However, despite these minor issues, the Crosstrek Hybrid is a great car overall. While it may lack certain features found in other Subaru models, such as dual zone climate control, power rear hatch, rain sensing wipers, fully automatic speed sensitive door locks, and ambient noise sensitive radio volume, it still offers excellent value for its price point.Anyway, the Crosstrek Hybrid will do for now. I'm sure something even better will come along eventually!

The car's mileage is its only redeeming quality, averaging at 33mpg. However, I personally will not be a repeat Subaru owner due to some issues I have experienced. At highway speeds in mild crosswinds, the car's handling is the worst I've ever experienced. It tends to shift a foot or two left or right, especially when the roads are slightly crowned. The seats are also quite uncomfortable, but I found a solution by buying a seat cushion for the driver's side. Initially, the wipers were not available in stores, so I had to purchase them online through Amazon. Additionally, the interior light does not have an auto shutoff, which can be a bit of a hassle. The radio also requires constant resetting to factory default, and Apple CarPlay does not work consistently. I have also noticed that the engine can be quite loud and rattly on cold days after starting. The latest issue I have experienced is a grinding noise from the Xmode, which I have been told is caused by rocks getting stuck in a tight clearance area on the front end. It is important to be aware of Subaru apologists who may try to excuse these issues, so it's best to think for yourself.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my thoughts on the car I've been driving since March. While there are some aspects that I really like, such as [insert positive aspects here], I have noticed a few areas that could use improvement. For example, I find the acceleration to be quite noisy and the seats can be uncomfortable on longer trips. Additionally, the suspension is a bit stiff and there is some play in the steering wheel. Overall, I still think it's a good car, but I wanted to share my honest feedback with you.

Great car! Although, I did have some trouble with the transmission. Unfortunately, the CVT's seem to be failing quite frequently, mine gave out at 115k miles. Luckily, Subaru has extended the warranty on their CVT's to 100k miles. Despite my experience, I still highly recommend this car, but I will be looking for a different transmission in my next vehicle.

I've owned this car for about two weeks and I couldn't be more pleased! It's such a nice car, especially compared to my previous 2015 Chevrolet Colorado which was constantly developing problems. Although it's smaller than the truck, as a six-foot-tall person, I find the interior to be spacious and the seats to be very comfortable. The power is great, especially with the manual transmission, although the automatic works very well too. I just prefer the manual. The manual transmission works smoothly without any slop. The ride is very smooth and it handles rough roads very well. The steering is easy and fairly quick, and for electric steering, it actually has some feel. I really enjoy driving it and honestly couldn't be happier with it. Coming from a family that's made its living from GM, I can confidently say that this is a very good car!

I just wanted to let you know that I recently traded in my late model Escape for a Subaru Crosstrek. I have to say, it's a really smart-looking car with a lot going for it. While it does fall a bit short in some areas, there are definitely some pluses. For one, it handles off-road terrain with ease and makes it easy to forget that I'm not in my Jeep Wrangler or F-150. On the road, the Crosstrek feels a bit light and the steering takes a bit of getting used to, but it's nothing major. The engine is capable and the brakes are great, leaving you feeling like the car is glued to the road. The interior is a bit spartan, but that's typical for this price point. The controls are easy to operate and less likely to fail, which is always a plus. While the touch screen can be a bit finicky at times, it does offer Google Auto. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend the Subaru Crosstrek to others. It's a really affordable car that manages to conceal its low price in many ways and does so quite successfully.

After owning the vehicle for several months, I can confidently say that it is a great overall vehicle. The 6-speed manual with convenience package has everything I need, including air conditioning and power windows and locks. The vehicle handles great in the rain and is quiet on the highway. During a recent 200-mile trip, I achieved an amazing 36 mpg using cruise control at 62 mph. The lower lumbar support in the seating is excellent, and the vehicle performed exceptionally well during the first heavy snowfall. The fuel economy is only getting better, and I have achieved a range of 648.7 miles using cruise control. The engine required no further oil between 4k and 10k, which is great. Although there was an issue with the Android Auto button being grey and never connecting, the vehicle is still a tremendous value and a great road trip vehicle.

Hi there! I noticed that some reviews mention a lack of power, but in my experience, the Crosstrek has plenty of torque when you need it. For example, when pulling out into traffic, it accelerates with ease. Personally, I chose the Crosstrek because I had a bad experience with a 2019 Jeep Cherokee that I purchased and regretted after only 4 months of driving. The power was so poor that it was scary to pull onto busy roads. In comparison, the Crosstrek is a dream to drive and I love everything about it. The only downside was having to trade in my brand new Jeep, but I guess we all live and learn. Let me know if you have any questions!

I test drove 6 or 7 other SUVs before buying my 2019 Crosstrek. It was a used loaner at a dealership. As someone who has only owned sedans before, I was a little nervous about switching to an SUV. However, I've been driving my Crosstrek for 8 months now and I'm really happy with it. The AWD is a game changer and makes me feel more secure on the road. I've noticed that I can take turns faster and it feels sporty to drive. I even got up to 80mph on the highway the other day and it felt smooth and effortless. The Crosstrek feels strong and has great pickup. I've taken it off-road a few times and it handles heavy sand with ease. It's a major improvement from my old sedan. The only downside is that it took me a little while to get used to the CVT engine, but now I trust the car and it doesn't bother me anymore. Overall, I'm really happy with my Crosstrek and would definitely recommend it to others.I rented a car with automatic transmission recently while traveling and I miss the control I feel with the shifting, the sound, and that type of engine overall. However, the Crosstrek handles so much better. The base model doesn't come with a headlight indicator on the dashboard, which is a problem for me, but I'm dealing with it. Overall, it's much more reliable than my old car that I traded in, and it's much newer and probably safer.
