2023 Subaru Crosstrek problems
The Subaru Crosstrek (Japanese: スバル・クロストレック, Hepburn: Subaru Kurosutorekku) (also known as the Subaru XV globally for the first two generations) is a compact crossover SUV produced by Subaru since 2012. It is a successor to the Outback Sport in the United States and Canada, and the Impreza XV globally. Like the Outback Sport, the Crosstrek is a lifted Impreza hatchback with minor differences, though with a more substantial lift than the Outback Sport.
Initially, the vehicle was marketed as the XV globally, and as the XV Crosstrek in the United States and Canada. In 2015, Subaru dropped the XV moniker in the United States and Canada, marketing it simply as the Crosstrek for the 2016 model year and onward. In 2022, Subaru introduced the third-generation model, using the Crosstrek nameplate globally for the first time.
All generations of the Crosstrek are raised versions of the Subaru Impreza hatchback.

Common 2023 Subaru Crosstrek problems
The Subaru Crosstrek, a popular subcompact crossover SUV, is known for its stylish design, off-road capabilities, sedan-like handling, and efficient plug-in hybrid model. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its issues. Here are three of the most common problems reported by real owners of the Subaru Crosstrek:
- Malfunctioning Auto Start-Stop System: The auto start-stop system in the Subaru Crosstrek is designed to improve gas mileage by automatically stopping the engine when idling and restarting it when the driver presses down on the accelerator. However, many Crosstrek owners have reported issues with this system, such as it working intermittently or not at all. Some drivers have also expressed concerns that the auto start-stop system can cause wear on the engine. While disabling the system is an option, it can get reactivated once the ignition is turned off, making it a temporary solution at best.
- Brake Light Switch Failure: Another common issue reported by Crosstrek owners is brake light switch failure. This problem occurs when the brake lights do not illuminate when the driver presses the brake pedal. The cause of this issue is most likely due to cleaning products clogging up the switches that activate the brake lights. This can pose a significant safety concern, as other drivers may not be able to see the Crosstrek when it is braking, especially at night. Subaru issued a recall in 2019 to address this issue.
- Heavy Consumption of Oil: The Subaru Crosstrek models with the F-series Boxer engine have been reported to consume oil at a higher rate than other vehicles, with some models burning a quart of oil every 1,200 miles. This is significantly higher than the average for all vehicles, which is around a quart every 3,000 miles. This issue is due to looser tolerances in the engine, and it can cause damage to the engine and other parts of the crossover SUV if the oil level gets too low.
Despite these common problems, the Subaru Crosstrek is generally considered a reliable crossover SUV, with RepairPal giving it an "excellent" reliability rating of 4.5 out of five. However, it is essential to be aware of these potential issues when considering purchasing a Crosstrek, especially if you are looking at a model with the F-series Boxer engine.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-12
- VIN: JF2GTHMC9PH
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: On July 12, 2024 I was driving down the highway when my sunroof suddenly shattered. It sounded like an explosion or a gun went off. I nearly crashed my vehicle. There were no vehicles in front of me however there were vehicles behind me. I looked back into my rear view mirror and saw vehicles veering out of the way as parts of sunroof glass flew. Thankfully I was able to pull over safely. No injuries or accidents occurred. That same day I notified my dealership and they asked me to bring the vehicle in the following day. The following day on July 13, 2024 I took my car into the dealership to be seen and we were told it has happened before to several customers. No explanation was given as to how or why this occured. That same day I contacted Subaru of America and a case was assigned. We are still trying to sort out the issue and get the sunroof repaired.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-19
- VIN: JF2GTABC2PH
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: Potential safety hazard ? Engine Auto start/stop feature for gas savings and emmisons control works by applying brakes and Engine shuts off, it restarts when brakes released. Normal operation, BUT I have noticed that unbuckeling the seatbelt or OPENING the DOOR will cause it to RESTART even though brakes are applied..this could cause an accident as it's an unexpected RESTART of the Engine in drive. Recommend this feature be disabled until door/seatbelt closed or seatbelt buckled or car in park before restart. Someone thinking car is OFF but actually in a pause restart could accidentally open door and upon getting out the car would start and move potential loss of control. My 2013 VW PASSAT would alarm to place in park if door open or seatbelt not worn.. Subaru starts ! I consider this a potential dangerous condition as it's not expect restart.

- Summary: Dealer installed OEM trailer hitch and wiring harness as part of the new vehicle purchase agreement. Installed prior to my taking delivery at the selling Subaru Dealership. During a service visit today at a local RV/Trailer Retail/Service Center, the technician inspected my hitch and found loose/untightened trailer hitch attachment bolts. Luckly I have never pulled a trailer since purchasing the vehicle. No damage or accidents have occurred because of this. Service Tech (not by Subaru) tightened all the bolts to make sure my Subaru was safe and roadworthy. Thank you in advance for your attention to this.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-10
- VIN: JF2GTACC0P9
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Debris on the interstate (likely a rock from a dump truck a few vehicles ahead) hit the lower right corner of the windshield on the passenger side. The impact immediately caused a large chip and bullseye shaped crack almost six inches in diameter. The impact was loud enough to make my ears ring. I have not experienced this kind of sound or damage in other brand vehicles. The windshield needed to be replaced and paid for out of pocket. It was not covered by warranty or insurance.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-01
- VIN: JF2GTAPC2P8
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS
- Summary: I purchased this vehicle in January 2023 model. The issue is that the driver side seat is heating up when sitting in the seat even though the heated seat button is NOT on. This issue happens most but not all of the time and the seat will get so hot it feels like my bottom and lower back is burning on fire to the point where I am EXTREMELY distracted while driving. This is a safety hazard, I fear it is only a matter of time before I cause an accident due to this distraction because it is so unbearable that I cannot focus on driving. I have searched to see if others have experienced this and there have been other reports on different forums etc. I have pasted a few below for reference: https://www.subaruxvforum.com/threads/hot-drivers-seat.182193/ https://www.subaruforester.org/threads/2020-driver-heated-seat-always-on-anyone-else.808784/ https://www.subaruforester.org/threads/2015-heated-seats-turning-on-themselves-dealership-cant-replicate-it.827426/ Dealership cannot replicate the issue on a very brief attempt even though the tech mentioned he could feel the warmth generated from the seat. The dealer told me to call Subaru customer advocacy who also blew me off and said they cannot replicate issue and advised no one else reported the issue so there was not action they could take. Her name was [XXX]. Email is [XXX] Please help me get resolution to this safety issue. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-06
- VIN: JF2GTHSC8PH
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: A 12-in crack formed spontaneously in the window while I was sitting at a stoplight.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-19
- VIN: JF2GTHMC9P8
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Overall I’m disappointed in the quality of the manufactured parts and accessories. It leads me to believe low grade materials were used in manufacturing this vehicle. My vehicle is brand new and has 2500 miles on it and the front windshield has a crack that is obvious to the naked eye that it was not caused by a rock hitting it while driving. If low grade quality (thin glass) was used to produce this vehicle and it easily breaks/cracks this is a safety hazard for drivers and passengers.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-18
- VIN: JF2GTHMC3PH
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Passenger door lock won't lock either with fob or manually. Was first noticed when clicking noise was heard in the passenger door when automatic locks engaged. Subaru dealer's service dept. verified problem and ordered part that they said may take months to receive. In the meantime, vehicle will need to be left parked and operated with passenger door unlocked.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-23
- VIN: JF2GTHRC2PH
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Got my 2023 Crosstrek sport 2 days ago with 6 miles on the odometer. When I first drove it on the freeway today, a rock chip larger than a quarter appeared on my front windshield. I was on an overpass entering the main freeway so I was only going at 55 mph, did not even hear a loud bang when it happened. But given the size and depth of the crack, I have to replace the whole piece of glass. It is bizarre and astonishing how fragile the quality of the brand new windshield is.

I recently purchased my first Subaru, a 2023 Crosstrek Limited, and I have been very pleased with it so far. The safety features, AWD, and 8.7” ground clearance have been particularly useful for my wildlife photography adventures. The 2.5-liter engine with 182hp provides plenty of power for highway passing. While the seats could be more comfortable on long trips and the sun-visors are on the smaller side, my only major complaint is that a front license plate bracket was not included, which is required in Texas where I live. Overall, I highly recommend the Crosstrek Limited!

With electric vehicles being overpriced, unavailable, and having long charge times, we needed a road warrior, and this was it.

I'm so glad I got my Trek! I've only had it for 2 days and I'm already wondering why I didn't get one sooner. It's such a fun car to drive!

Pros: I absolutely love the interior layout of this car! It was so easy to get used to because it was similar to my Outback. The back is really roomy, and there's plenty of cargo space in the rear. I also love that there are lots of aftermarket goodies available. Plus, with that AWD, it's steady as a rock in the rain. Cons: The power is a bit anemic. I had to get a manual transmission because I've had two CVT transmissions fail on me in the past. Unfortunately, this left me with only two options: the base 2.0L and the next step up 2.0L. No 2.5L manuals are being made, and from what I heard from the dealer, there will be no more manuals made next year in the SUV category. This means that passing anyone but a horse and buggy is a bit of a challenge. However, I was amazed at how smooth the 1st to 2nd gear change was, as long as you wait until after 3500 RPM. The only other downside is the audio system. The Android Auto on this device leaves a lot to be desired. It continuously drops my phone's connection (not Bluetooth, but the sync cable). I've tried updating my phone, the app, and even bought a brand new expensive data transfer cable, but nothing seems to work. I'm waiting for the dealer to return a text to see if there's a software update for the car. The included all-inclusive built-in application for accessing media is also not supported by any updated phone, and I wasn't able to access the website to see if there was a later version available. However, all in all, I really like this car. The power may be a bit lethargic, but it's great on gas when I hit 6th and cruise the many miles to work. I don't think this vehicle is ever going to take a trip to the mountains with me, but it's perfect for my daily commute!Unless I was travelling alone with a limited amount of luggage, I would have opted for a premium car with a manual transmission. Unfortunately, they are quite rare in the south east. In fact, when I purchased this car, it was the only one available within a 400-mile radius.

I was disappointed when I tried to remotely start my car with my key fob, only to find out that it isn't possible. Instead, I have to use the Subaru app which costs money. Unfortunately, the app only allows the car to run for 10 minutes at a time, which can be inconvenient during extremely cold weather. While I was not informed of this limitation when I purchased the car, I understand that the dealer may not have been aware of it either. Although this has been frustrating, I still appreciate the other features of my Subaru. I hope that future updates to the app will allow for more flexibility in remote starting the car.

Hi there! I noticed that the Crosstrek 2023 has a new eyesight cruise control function that might not be compatible with previous Subaru models, like my Forester. It seems that the Crosstrek's cruise control disengages within one second of coming to a stop, which could be potentially unsafe if there is a car or person in front of you. Unfortunately, Subaru won't reprogram the Crosstrek. Just wanted to give you a heads up! Thanks for reading.
