2000 Jaguar Xjr problems

jaguar logo

The Jaguar XJ (X308) is a full-size luxury saloon car manufactured and marketed by Jaguar Cars for years 1997–2003 across two generations and featuring the Jaguar AJ-V8 engine and Jaguar independent rear suspension. It was the third and final evolution of the Jaguar XJ40 platform that had been in production since 1986. It was preceded by the Jaguar XJ (X300).

Exterior

The X308 kept much of the same exterior styling as its predecessor, the Jaguar XJ (X300), carrying its rounded four-headlamp bonnet, low roofline, sloping tail, and wrap-around rear light clusters. From the front, the two generations can be differentiated by the shape of the indicator lenses (rectangular on the X300, oval on the X308), and also by the shape of the fog lamps and lower valance air intake, both of which are more rounded on the X308.

The front and rear bumpers were both changed along with the taillights which had red/clear lenses rather than red/grey lenses. The grille surround and badging was slightly changed. The headlight fixtures also included forward parking lights housed with the brights, new to X308.

Common 2000 Jaguar Xjr problems

The Jaguar XJR 2000, a luxury performance car, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. One of the major issues is related to the transmission, which can experience early failure. This issue is common in European vehicles, and the only way to accurately determine if the transmission needs to be repaired is by running a comprehensive diagnostic.

Another problem is related to the ignition coils, which can fail and cause the engine to run inadequately. This problem can occur intermittently and often doesn’t trigger the check engine light.

Coolant loss is another common issue with Jaguars, particularly in the coolant reservoir, which can leak and cause pooling underneath the engine. If the reservoir fails altogether, the resulting coolant loss can trigger the engine to overheat, leading to extensive damage.

The brake pressure accumulator, a specific part of the antilock brake system, has been known to fail, causing the brake pedal to go stiff and making it difficult to slow down or stop. If you hear any clicking or squealing noises coming from the front brakes, you may need to have your brake system checked.

In addition, some Jaguar XJR 2000s have engine problems, such as issues with the timing chain and overheating engines. If you hear noises coming from the engine upon starting or idling, there could be a problem with the timing chain tensioner. An overheating engine can damage the cylinder bores, causing the vehicle to use too much oil.

It is important to note that the pre-2000 models of the Jaguar XJR have a Nikasil engine coating that is best avoided. This issue was sorted out in mid-2000, so any car from September 2000 onwards should be safe. However, it is crucial to check for any signs of tensioner problems leading to timing chain failures, as this has been reported in some Jaguar XJR 2000s.

Front wishbone bushes can also go after only about 20,000 miles, causing steering problems, uneven tyre wear, and, if left unattended, possible suspension damage. The cost to replace can be £700. Rear dampers are prone to failure, particularly with CATS adjustable suspension.

In terms of other high-performance saloons like the Jaguar, if you’re not keen on the Audi S8 or BMW 7-Series, there is the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. For around the same £7500, you could get a similar age S500 with below-average miles. Or if you wanted to stick with a Japanese make, perhaps a Lexus GS430?

Are 2000s Jaguars reliable?

The 2000 S type is “much worse than average” according to Consumer Reports. People do not but a Jaguar because they want a reliable car. People buy a Jaguar because they want a Jaguar. If you concerned about reliability you must be concerned with cost of repairs.

How long do Jaguar XJR last?

Most Jaguar vehicles will last for at least 150,000 miles, but there's a lot that a driver can do to push this number much higher. With regular oil replacement, belt changes, spark plug replacement, and other basic maintenance services, you can ensure that your Jaguar lasts for 200,000 miles or more.

What is the top speed of the Jaguar XJR 2000?

The XJR was capable of reaching 97 km/h (60 mph) from a standstill in 5.6 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 249 km/h (155 mph). In 2001, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Sir William Lyons' birth, Jaguar produced five hundred examples of a special-edition model named the XJR 100.

What is the problem with the 2004 XJR?

The most common problems with the 2004 XJR are the torque converter, transmission programming, air suspension compressor, coolant expansion tank and the earlier XJs had wiring harness issues.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-08-23
  • VIN: WMWSU3C50DT
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING IN THE MIDDLE LANE OF A 5 LANE FREEWAY AT 65MPH WHEN WITHOUT ANY WARNING I LOST ALL POWER AND THE ENGINE BEGAN TO COAST AT 15MPH. WITHOUT POWER STEERING OR BRAKES I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO GET TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO MY DEALER WHO TOLD ME THAT BOTH THE ALTERNATOR AND BATTERY HAD FAILED. THEY REVIEWED THE COMPUTER FAULT WARNINGS TO CONFIRM THAT NO WARNING WAS EVER REGISTERED BY THE SYSTEM. A TOTAL BATTERY FAILURE LESS THAN 10 MINUTES AFTER A NORMAL START IS ODD AND NO WARNING IS INEXCUSABLE, AS IS THE TOTAL ALTERNATOR FAILURE WITHOUT SYSTEM NOTIFICATION. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-08-05
  • VIN: SAJDA15B6YM
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: JAGUAR IS A GREAT CAR MANUFACTURE BUT I BELIEVE ALL 98-2000 JAGUAR V8'S SHOULD BE CONSIDERED LEMON'S IF THEY HAVE NOT YET BEEN RETROFITTED WITH THE LATEST TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER DESIGN JAGUAR CURRENTLY USES. THESE CARS ARE TICKING TIME BOMB'S IF THEY HAVE NOT. ACCORDING TO MULTIPLE FORUMS AND VARIOUS JAG ENTHUSIAST WEB SITES JAGUAR NEVER PUT OUT A RECALL ON THIS PARTICULAR MATTER; RUMOR HAS IT THAT THEY DID NOT WANT THE RECALLS JEOPARDIZING JAGUAR'S REPUTATION BUT IT SEEMS TO ME THAT IT HAS ALREADY BEEN JEOPARDIZED BY THEM NOT WANTING TO ACCEPT FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR ALL THESE V8'S FAILING DUE TO MALFUNCTIONING TIMING CHAIN TENSIONERS; THE VERY INCIDENT THAT OCCURRED WITH MY 2000 JAGUAR XJR WITH ONLY 80K MILES THIS IS JUST UNHEARD OF. THIS IS JUST A FEW OF THE PROBLEM'S THIS VEHICLE HAS GIVEN ME. SOMETIMES IT GOES INTO "RESTRICTED PERFORMANCE MODE" AT THE MOST UNSAFE TIMES SUCH AS MERGING ON TO A FREEWAY OR MAKING A LANE CHANGE. THE VEHICLE PRETTY MUCH DOES NOT ALLOW ITSELF TO REV PASS A CERTAIN RPM AND IF YOU TRY TO ACCELERATE WILL CUT ALL POWER OUT? I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM DIAGNOSED MULTIPLE TIMES ONLY TO GET NO ANSWERS. LASTLY SOMETIMES THE CAR GOES INTO "FAIL SAFE ENGINE MODE" AND WILL NOT ALLOW ITSELF TO START UNTIL IT BASICALLY FEELS LIKE IT. I KID YOU NOT THIS CAR IS VERY TEMPERAMENTAL AND STARTS WHEN IT WANTS TO. WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS A LINEAR SWITCH CAUSING THE MALFUNCTION -$700.00 AND THREE MONTHS LATER THE PROBLEM STILL PERSIST. I CONTACTED JAGUAR IN REGARDS TO ALL THIS AND THEY SIMPLY SAID THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE. THE CAR IS TOO OLD AND FAR PAST ITS WARRANTY. ITS ALMOST AS IF THEY'RE CARS ARE THAT NEW FAMILY PUPPY EVERYONE LOVES AT FIRST AND AS SOON AS THE DOG GETS OLD SO DOES HE. THEY COULD CARELESS ABOUT THE LATER MODEL CARS AND THAT'S A SHAME CONSIDERING THE LATER MODELS ARE STILL RECOGNIZABLE AS A JAGUAR UNLIKE THESE NEWER MODELS THEY HAVE.

Negative 2000 Jaguar Xjr car reviews

370 horses make it fun and there's lots of subtle, head-turning class. This is my 3rd Jag and I must say, they're getting better with each generation. However, I have been disappointed with the little problems that pop up, such as part failures, irritating rattling noises due to build quality, and electronics issues. Twice now it has stopped running out of the blue while driving, and the dealer can't seem to find the problem. I have also noticed that the XJR has a tendency to hop when cornering and hitting a bump at speed, even with proper alignment and top of the line tires.

XJR WonderCar. This is a fantastic car that will make you feel like you're flying.

  2. Darian Hill 2024-09-27

I really enjoy driving this car, but I dislike the tires it's riding on. Sometimes it feels like I'm in a horse-drawn carriage rolling at 70mph over cobblestone streets. It would be great if this car had a wider variety of tires to choose from. On the bright side, the XJR has a stealthy appearance at stoplights, especially when compared to the Asian street rods or the occasional Mustang or Camaro. When I turn off the traction control and switch to Sport Mode, I can give them a run for their money, leaving the 540 or 740 far behind. The sporty yet classy interior is definitely a plus.

  3. Blaze Pollich 2024-06-28

What I really love about this car is that you can drive it for 4 hours and get out feeling as fresh as when you started. The car is incredibly fast and the sport mode button is very effective when needed. Unlike many other cars that have this option, it is actually useful in this car. I bought it used with 40k miles and it has been very reliable. The only issue I have encountered is that the climate control sometimes struggles to maintain a consistent temperature.

  4. Rasheed Jacobs 2024-06-20

After hearing from the media that Japanese cars were the best, I decided to buy a LEXUS LS. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. It lacked the soul of a Jaguar and was often mistaken for a Camry. The valet even parked it in the back. However, since switching to the XJR, I always get a smile and the front row at restaurants. I won't be going back to POSURE cars anytime soon. I love my new car!

  5. Wyatt McDermott 2024-06-09

I really like the way the car looks and handles. The supercharged engine is so smooth and powerful, it leaves the line with no hesitation. Plus, the gas mileage is great considering the size and weight of the car. The only downside is that the low profile Pirelli P Zero tires can ride a little harshly at slow speeds on rough pavement.
