ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-08
- VIN: 5GZER23D69J
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I was driving and my car started to lurch and went into reduced power mode. I quickly pulled over and turned off the engine. It was towed into the shop, and we found that the timing chain had broken. We had just had our engine mounts replaced and the oil changed. The vehicle has been well maintained. I have seen the issue with the timing chain failure is a common problem in Saturns/GM from internet research. It looks like there was a service bulletin to bring the car in if Service light comes on and you “think” it’s due to premature wear of timing chain. Now we are told the engine needs to be replaced because it was damaged by the timing chain failure and it seems like a known defect that should be covered because it exceeded the value of the car to have such a fix.

- Summary: IN 2016, I PURCHASED A 2009 SATURN OUTLOOK FROM A DEALER, WITH 90,000 MILES ON IT. TWO MONTHS LATER, "TRANSMISSION OVERHEATING, LET ENGINE IDLE" INDICATOR CAME ON, AND THE SATURN SHUT ITSELF DOWN AS I DROVE DOWN I-35! MECHANIC SAID THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. THEY RESET MY CODES, AND ALL SEEMED OKAY. THIS HAPPENED A FEW MORE TIMES, BUT KNOW ONE COULD TELL ME WHAT WAS WRONG OTHER THAT BANK 1 LOW. FOR THE MOST PART IT DROVE WITHOUT PROBLEMS. REGULAR SERVICE MAINTENANCE, AND OIL CHANGES CONSISTENT WITH THE MANUAL. I RARELY DROVE IT AFTER THE SECOND YEAR OF OWNING IT. ON WAY HOME TO OREGON (PURCHASED OUTLOOK IN IOWA), I CONTINUOUSLY LOST POWER GOING UP THE PASSES. SEMI TRUCKS WERE PASSING ME, AS IF I WERE SITTING STILL. WITH NEW AIR-FILTER SYSTEM, MAF SENSOR, COILS, BOOTS, AND SPARK PLUGS INSTALLED I CONTINUED AT A SNAIL PACE ALL THE WAY TO OREGON. A TWO DAY TRIP TOOK ME SEVEN DAYS. NOBODY COULD TELL ME WHAT WAS WRONG OTHER THAN THE BANK 1 LOW, O2 SENSOR, WHICH I REPLACED THOSE AS WELL. I GET HOME AND SEVEN MONTHS LATER, I ALMOST GET HIT BY A SCHOOL BUS, BECAUSE MY SATURN STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION. THREE LIGHT CHANGES LATER, I MAKE IT ACROSS THE STREET TO THE COLLEGE. IT SHUDDERED ALL THE WAY, TILL I PARKED IT, WHERE I HAD TO WAIT TO BE TOWED THREE BLOCKS TO HOME. I PAID OVER $15,000 FOR A VEHICLE THAT LASTED ME UNDER 50,000 MILES. IT IS PAID IN FULL, AND IS NOW DEAD. STILL NO CLUE AS WHY. CODES SHOW BANK 1 AND 2 LOW ? BUT WHY WILL IT NOT START? WHY DID MY BATTERY DIE? I COULD NOT HAVE TAKEN BETTER CARE OF MY BABY, IF I TRIED! PLEASE, HELP ME FIX HER. THERE IS NO REASON FOR THIS VEHICLE TO BE OUT OF COMMISSION, YET IT IS AT 134,000 MILES. GM, PLEASE FIX THIS. THIS WAS FAULTY AT 90,500 MILES. I HAVE ALWAYS TAKEN GREAT CARE OF EVERY CAR I HAVE EVER OWNED. IT GOT WORSE AFTER I TOOK IT TO A CHEVY DEALER IN MISSOURI! 2009 Saturn Outlook recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 7 recalls for different components of the 2009 Saturn Outlook.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: STRUCTURE:BODY:HATCHBACK/LIFTGATE
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 Buick Enclave vehicles manufactured January 3, 2007, to February 29, 2012, 2009-2012 Chevrolet Traverse vehicles manufactured July 6, 2008, to March 9, 2012, 2007-2012 GMC Acadia vehicles manufactured September 15, 2006, to February 29, 2012, and 2007-2010 Saturn Outlook vehicles manufactured August 17, 2006, to March 18, 2010. The affected vehicles, equipped with the power liftgate option, have gas struts that hold the power liftgate up when open. These struts may prematurely wear and the open liftgate may suddenly fall.
- Consequence: If the open liftgate unexpectedly falls, it may strike a person, increasing their risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the software for the power liftgate actuator motor control unit so that the motor will prevent the rapid closing of the lift gate, free of charge. The recall began on November 15, 2016. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, and Saturn customer service at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for this recall is 15240.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: General Motors is recalling certain model year 2009-2014 Buick Enclave vehicles manufactured April 14, 2008, through May 14, 2014, Chevrolet Traverse vehicles manufactured June 6, 2008, through May 14, 2014, and GMC Acadia vehicles manufactured April 9, 2008, through May 14, 2014, and 2009-2010 Saturn Outlook vehicles manufactured April 14, 2008, through March 18, 2010. In the affected vehicles, the flexible steel cable that connects the seatbelt to the front outboard seating positions may fatigue and separate over time.
- Consequence: If the steel cable becomes fatigued and separates, the seatbelt may not properly restrain the seat occupant increasing the risk of an injury in a crash.
- Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, if necessary, repair and replace the lap pretensioner, free of charge. Parts are not currently available. An interim notice will be mailed to owners in July 2014. A second notice will be mailed to owners once parts become available. The recall for the 2009-2010 model years began on July 11, 2014. The interim letter for the 2011-2014 model years were distributed on July 11, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-462-8782 (GMC), 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn). General Motors recall number for this campaign is 14187.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC

- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2008-2013 Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia and 2009-2013 Chevrolet Traverse and 2008-2010 Saturn Outlook vehicles. In the affected vehicles, increased resistance in the driver and passenger seat mounted side impact air bag (SIAB) wiring harnesses may result in the SIAB and seat belt pretensioners not deploying in the event of a crash.
- Consequence: Failure of the side impact air bags and seat belt pretensioners to deploy in a crash increase the risk of injury to the driver and front seat occupant.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected harness connections with soldered connections, free of charge. The recall began on June 16, 2014. Buick owners may contact the owner center at 1-800-521-7300, Chevrolet owners at 1-866-694-6546, Saturn at 1-800-553-6000, and GMC owners at 1-866-996-9463. GM's number for this recall is 14030. - Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009-2010 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE, BUICK ENCLAVE, GMC ACADIA, AND SATURN OUTLOOK VEHICLES. THE SECOND ROW SEAT SIDE TRIM SHIELD RESTRICTS THE UPWARD ROTATION OF THE SAFETY BELT BUCKLE WHEN THE SEAT BACK IS RETURNED TO A SEATING POSITION AFTER BEING FOLDED FLAT. IF THE BUCKLE CONTACTS THE SEAT FRAME, ADDITIONAL EFFORT IS REQUIRED TO RETURN THE SEAT TO A SEATING POSITION. IF SUFFICIENT FORCE IS APPLIED, THE BUCKLE COVER COULD BE PUSHED DOWN THE STRAP, EXPOSING AND PARTIALLY DEPRESSING THE RED RELEASE BUTTON.
- Consequence: THE SAFETY BELT MAY NOT RESTRAIN THE OCCUPANT AS INTENDED DURING A CRASH, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE SEAT OCCUPANT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE SECOND ROW SEAT SIDE TRIM SHIELDS. IF A SAFETY BELT BUCKLE IS DAMAGED, DEALERS WILL REPLACE IT FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 18, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, AND SATURN AT 1-800-972-8876, OR AT THE OWNER CENTER AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

A RECALL WAS IMPLEMENTED IN 2008 TO ADD A FUSE TO THE CONTROL CIRCUIT HARNESS TO ADDRESS THE POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES OF A PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD (PCB) ELECTRICAL SHORT. HOWEVER, THERE HAVE BEEN NEW REPORTS OF THERMAL INCIDENTS ON HWFS MODULES AFTER THIS IMPROVEMENT WAS INSTALLED. THESE INCIDENTS RESULTED FROM A NEW FAILURE MODE ATTRIBUTED TO THE DEVICE'S THERMAL PROTECTION FEATURE. THE SIGNIFICANCE VARIES FROM MINOR DISTORTION TO CONSIDERABLE MELTING OF THE PLASTIC AROUND THE HWFS FLUID CHAMBER.
- Consequence: IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE HEATED WASHER MODULE TO IGNITE AND A FIRE MAY OCCUR.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL PERMANENTLY DISABLE AND REMOVE THE HEATED WASHER FLUID MODULE. AN UPDATED PAGE FOR THE OWNER MANUAL WILL BE PROVIDED AND INSERTED IN THE OWNER MANUAL TO DOCUMENT THAT THE FEATURE HAS BEEN PERMANENTLY DISABLED AND REMOVED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 11, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339, CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, SATURN AT 1-800-972-8876, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463 AND HUMMER AT 1-800-732-5493 OR AT THE OWNER CENTER AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

ON SOME OF THESE VEHICLES, THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT CABLE ADJUSTMENT CLIP MAY NOT BE FULLY ENGAGED. IF THE CLIP IS NOT FULLY ENGAGED, THE SHIFT LEVER AND THE ACTUAL POSITION OF THE TRANSMISSION GEAR MAY NOT MATCH. WITH THIS CONDITION, THE DRIVE COULD MOVE THE SHIFTER TO "PARK" AND REMOVE THE IGNITION KEY, BUT THE TRANSMISSION GEAR MAY NOT BE IN "PARK".
- Consequence: THE DRIVER MAY NOT BE ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND THE VEHICLE COULD ROLL AWAY AFTER THE DRIVER HAS EXITED THE VEHICLE, RESULTING IN A POSSIBLE CRASH WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.

I really love this SUV! During my search, I test drove the MDX, Highlander, and Pilot, but this beast outperforms them all in every aspect. As someone who is very particular about everything, I was pleased to find that this SUV scored well in every category. The interior is clean, easy to use, and functional, with excellent door paneling. The seat design and comfort are top-notch, even better than the MDX. The body fit and finish are great, and the ride quality strikes the perfect balance between handling and comfort. I measured the noise level at around 72 decibels at 70 miles, and I'm curious if it would improve even more with top-quality tires. The only improvements I would suggest are better upholstery for the back of the seat liners, cup holders with slots for mug handles, and adjustable headrest positions like those in a BMW.

If you're looking for a spacious and comfortable SUV with great performance, this is the one for you. The ride is quieter than a Lexus and the interior is awesome. I've test-driven several other SUVs, including the Acadia, Lexus GX, and Toyota Sequoia, but this one has it all. The styling is light years ahead of recent Saturn/GM models and they finally got it right. I'm surprised I haven't seen more of these on the road!

First of all, we would like to recommend buying your next car at CARMAX. Our experience was fantastic and enjoyable. As for the car itself, it is easily the best one we have ever owned. We have previously owned a Honda Civic, Nissan 300 Z twin turbo, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and GMC Sierra Truck, but this car drives like a dream. It is safe, quiet, and responsive, with functional controls that are kid-friendly. The seats reconfigure effortlessly, making it a great choice for families. We were also able to get it at a great price at CARMAX. If you are looking for an SUV/mini van with the performance of a sports sedan, then look no further. The Saturn Outlook is an excellent choice and is less expensive than the GMC Acadia (even though they are both the same car)!

Our car has only 100k miles and has had standard replacement repairs such as brakes, H2O pump, AC compressor, and tires. It has been strictly city driven, so I use the best synthetic oil to keep all those sensors happy. Maintenance is key! It gets 24 MPG on the highway. Update: Our Outlook only averages 4000 miles annually, which can cause issues with the oil flow sensor not getting used enough to get cleaned while being driven. This can be frustrating with codes coming and going. To test if I have a bad 3.6, I decided to take a 1500 mile trip through 100⁰ heat and push the car hard at 80+ mph. The codes would chime in and quietly go out, but she still runs great! I love the interior, but when the opportunity arises to replace her, she's gone. With 104335 miles, there's just too much tech in this 3.6vvt.

Even before we purchased our 2008 Outlook XR AWD, we first saw it at the Maine Mall. Now that we have purchased it, we know we made the right choice. This is a great crossover SUV that meets our needs, especially for our trips to Massachusetts. We enjoy everything about the Outlook!

It's really frustrating when you feel like your concerns aren't being heard. I had some issues with my Outlook, including a faulty wave plate that caused transmission problems, and it ended up costing me quite a bit in repairs. I wish there had been a recall for this issue. On top of that, I had to replace several other parts as well. It's definitely been a learning experience for me, and I'll be more careful in the future when choosing a vehicle.

I have experienced some issues with my vehicle that have been difficult to diagnose and resolve. Despite multiple attempts to address a rubbing sound coming from the front left wheel well, the issue persisted. After further investigation, it was determined that the traction control system and ABS were causing the problem, which only occurred when turning left and going downhill. Additionally, the A/C system has not been performing well, with inconsistent temperature control and the controls themselves showing signs of wear. There is also a persistent squeaking in the steering wheel that would require a costly repair. While there have been some challenges, I am confident that these issues can be resolved with the right expertise and attention.

As a loyal General Motors customer, I was excited to own this vehicle due to its impressive design both inside and out. However, I have experienced some major problems with it. Although everything has been covered under warranty so far, it has been frustrating to deal with. The rack and pinion went at 30,000 miles, followed by the right strut at 35,000 miles, which started leaking again at 60,000 miles. The water pump also failed at 50,000 miles, and finally, the transmission went at 68,000 miles. While I have had a negative experience with this vehicle, I hope that General Motors will take steps to address these issues and improve their products. I would not recommend this vehicle to others, but I remain hopeful that General Motors will take action to improve their products and customer satisfaction.

We have had some challenges with our car, including issues with the transmission, lift gate struts, thermostat, AC, headlamp assembly, dash computer, and remote start. Additionally, we have experienced some water leakage from the sunroof. These issues have been frustrating, but we remain hopeful that they can be resolved. We appreciate your understanding and support as we work through these challenges.

Overall, the car is just 'okay'. Unfortunately, the transmission has had serious problems, requiring a rebuild at 58k miles, a control module replacement at 111k, a speed sensor replacement at 115k, and now it's looking like it needs another rebuild at 141k. As a result, the vehicle is unreliable and I would definitely not recommend it. It's a shame that GM quality is no longer what it used to be. I would never buy another one.
