Common Porsche Carrera problems

Porsche Carreras are known for several common problems that have been reported by owners. One of the most significant issues is engine failure, particularly in models manufactured between 1999 and 2004.

Another common problem in Porsche Carreras is coolant leakage, which is caused by corrosion. Many drivers have reported coolant leaking out of the lower half of the expansion tank, particularly in older models. This problem can lead to engine overheating and potential engine damage if not addressed promptly.

The intermediate shaft bearing (IMS) in Porsche Boxsters, particularly those manufactured between 1997 and 2005, has a high failure rate.

Rapid and uneven tyre wear is another common problem reported by Boxster owners. This issue is caused by wheel misalignment, which can result in the tyres appearing more worn on the inside and outside edges rather than straight across. This problem can be resolved by wheel alignment work.

Electric roof problems are also common in Boxster models, with the roof getting jammed halfway up due to bad or degraded connections at various points. The temperamental nature of this problem can make it difficult to diagnose and repair.

Porsche Cayenne owners have reported problems with the cooling system overheating, which can cause the plastic tubes to melt and burst. This problem can be prevented by upgrading the pipes from plastic to aluminium.

Airbag faults are also a common problem in Cayenne models, with the airbag fault light flashing involuntarily due to a faulty connection under the driver seat. This problem can be easily fixed by a qualified mechanic.

A clicking and beeping sound has been reported by some Porsche owners, which comes from under the dash of the car. This problem can be resolved by replacing the instrument cluster or getting the issue seen by a qualified mechanic.

Porsche Panamera owners have reported defective camshaft adjusters, with the bolt on the camshaft adjuster on some models loosening or breaking. This problem requires a replacement of the part.

In summary, Porsche Carreras are known for several common problems, including engine failure, coolant leakage, IMS bearing failure, tyre wear, electric roof problems, cooling system overheating, airbag faults, and clicking and beeping sounds. These problems can be resolved by qualified mechanics, but they can be costly and time-consuming to repair.

  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: WP0AB2968MS
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE STREET IN MY 1991 PORSCHE CARRERA 2 AT APPROXIMATELY 10-15 MPH WHEN THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIRBAG SPONTANEOUSLY DEPLOYED, SEVERELY BRUISING MY CHEST, HURTING MY NECK, AND BURNING MY LEGS WITH SOME SORT OF A BURNING CHEMICAL. I REPORTED IT TO PORSCHE WHO EVENTUALLY CAME AND GOT THE CAR, KEPT IT FOR 4-5 MONTHS, AND CLAIMED TO HAVE REPLACED SOME COMPONENTS OF THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. THEY REFUSED TO SHARE WITH ME WHAT HAPPENED TO CAUSE THIS. THE CAR WAS RETURNED TO ME, AND IT WAS STORED ALL WINTER UNTIL MAY 2009 WHEN I BEGAN DRIVING IT FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE INCIDENT. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 150 MILES LATER, THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND I CALLED PORSCHE WHO NOW REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING. I LIVE OVER 5 HOURS FROM THE NEAREST DEALER AND I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR TO THE DEALER TO BE LOOKED AT. I ALSO FEEL SINCE THEY SUPPOSEDLY REPLACED THE SYSTEM, THE WARNING LIGHT BEING ON IS RELATED TO WHATEVER THEY DID. I AM AFRAID THIS AIRBAG EXPLOSION IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO ME AGAIN- WHICH AT A HIGHER SPEED COULD PROVE FATAL OR AT LEAST VERY INJURIOUS. *TR
Porsche Carrera 2001
  • Date Of Incident: 2006-03-25
  • Date Complaint: 2006-05-15
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: MY 2001 PORSCHE 911 CABRIOLET HAD A COOLANT LEAK. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO BORDWALK PORSCHE IN PLANO TEXAS, THE COOLANT LEAK WAS IDENTIFIED AS A OVERFLOW BOTTLE WHICH HAD A HOLE IN IT. SUBSEQUENT INVESTIGATION LEAD TO THE DETERMINATION THAT THE VEHICLE HAD RODENT DAMAGE TO THE WIRING HARNESS. FARMERS INSURANCE PAID FOR THE WIRING HARNESS AND IT'S INSTALLATION, I PAID FOR THE OVERFLOW BOTTLE REPLACEMENT AND IT'S INSTALLATION. HOWEVER, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THERE WAS A 3RD LIGHT FAILURE ON MY VEHICLE NOT RELATED TO THE RODENT DAMAGE. NEITHER THE THIRD LIGHT ABOVE THE SPOILER OR THE THIRD LIGHT IN THE SPOILER WHEN IT IS DEPLOYED WORK. THIS MEANS MY VEHICLE HAS NO BRAKE OR RUNNING LIGHT IN THE SPOILER. HOWEVER, THE SPOILER RAISES AND LOWERS BOTH AUTOMATICALLY AND MANUALLY. THE PORSCHE SERVICE TECHNICIAN DETERMINED THAT THE SPOILER ASSEMBLY MUST BE REPLACED TO REPAIR THE RUNNING LIGHT AND BRAKE LIGHT HOWEVER, THE RAISING AND LOWERING OF THE SPOILER IS NOT AFFECTED BY THIS ISSUE. ACCORDING TO PORSCHE THE REPAIR IS $1,100 TO REPLACE THE ASSEMBLY MOTOR AND PERFORM THE INSTALLATION. SINCE I LEARNED OF THE FINAL RESOLUTION OF THIS ISSUE I HAVE NOTICED TWO OTHER LATE MODEL PORSCHE 911'S DRIVING IN THE DALLAS AREA WHICH DON'T HAVE RUNNING LIGHT OR BRAKE LIGHTS IN THE SPOILER ASSEMBLY THAT WORK (WHICH SUGGESTS TO ME THIS IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND POTENTIAL SAFETY HAZARD). THIS SAFETY ISSUE, IS WITHOUT THE LIGHTS YOU DON'T HAVE THE TRIANGLE OF LIGHTS WHEN DRIVING OR STOPPING. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT PRIOR TO THE REPLACEMENT OF THE WIRING HARNESS, THERE WAS NO IN DASH LIGHT TO INDICATE FAILURE OF ANY KIND IN THE DASH, SO I SUSPECT IT'S POSSIBLE THE OTHER PORSCHE 911'S THAT I HAVE OBSERVED DON'T KNOW OF THEIR ISSUE. *JB

  • Date Of Incident: 1999-11-11
  • Date Complaint: 2000-08-18
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: THE TREAD FROM THE LEFT REAR TIRE, WHICH HAD ABOUT 12,000 MILES ON IT, CAME OFF IN THE FAST LANE ON THE FREEWAY AT ABOUT 70 MPH. TRAFFIC WAS FAIRLY LIGHT AND ALTHOUGH WE FISHTAILED A BIT, I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF THE FREEWAY. THE TIRES HAVE A "RIM SAVER" FEATURE THAT ALLOWED ME TO DRIVE SLOWLY ON THE REMAINS OF THE TIRE. I HAVE HAD THREE OTHER FAILURES WITH THESE TIRES, TWO OF WHICH WERE UNEXPLAINABLE. I HAD ONE ADDITIONAL BLOWOUT ON THE FREEWAY AT LOWER SPEED, BUT I DON'T KNOW THE CAUSE OF IT. I SPOKE TO FIRESTONE ABOUT THESE INCIDENTS AND THE ASSURED ME THAT THESE TIRES HAD NO HISTORY OF PROBLEMS. AT THIS POINT I'M AFRAID TO KEEP DRIVING ON THEM. I HAVE NO FAITH THAT THEY WILL NOT COME APART OR BLOW OUT AT UNEXPECTED TIMES. WHENEVER I DRIVE OVER BUMPS ON THE ROAD I'M AFRAID I HAVE ANOTHER FLAT. FOUR FLATS IN A YEAR SEEMS A BIT EXCESSIVE. WHEN I READ ABOUT FIRESTONE'S PROBLEMS WITH THE ATX TIRES, IT SOUNDED JUST LIKE MY PROBLEM. IS THIS PROBLEM MORE WIDESPREAD THAN IS BEING REPORTED? I WOULD LIKE THESE TIRES REPLACED BY ANOTHER MANUFACTURER'S TIRES.( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: 225/50/R16 )
