2006 Pontiac Montana problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Montana is a minivan that was sold by General Motors under the Pontiac brand for model years 1997 to 2009. Its badge-engineered variants were the Chevrolet Venture and the Oldsmobile Silhouette in the first generation, and the Chevrolet Uplander, Saturn Relay, and Buick Terraza in the second generation. Prior to the 1997 model year, it was known as the Pontiac Trans Sport.

In 1996 for the 1997 model year, the Trans Sport added the Montana moniker as part of an available trim package. This package proved so popular the line was renamed Montana in 1998 for the 1999 model year in the United States and 1999 for the 2000 model year in Canada. When the van was redesigned in 2004 for the 2005 model year, the name was changed to Montana SV6. It was discontinued after the 2006 model year in the United States because of slow sales, but continued to be sold in Canada and Mexico until 2009. Since their introduction, the Pontiac minivans were GM's most popular minivans among consumers in Canada.

The Doraville, Georgia assembly plant which produced the Montana and its siblings closed on September 26, 2008. Sales of the Montana SV6 continued for Canada and Mexico until 2009, a year before the Pontiac brand was discontinued in 2010.

Common 2006 Pontiac Montana problems

The Pontiac Montana, produced between 1999 and 2006, has been known for several common problems, primarily affecting the engine and transmission.

  • Erratic Shifting: Another common problem for the 1999 to 2006 Montana models is erratic shifting caused by a faulty pressure control solenoid. This issue results in rough and delayed shifts, causing grinding or whining sounds. Replacing the faulty pressure control solenoid involves disassembling the transmission, which is costly and labor-intensive.
  • Leaking Refrigerant: Several Montana owners have reported that their air-conditioning stopped working due to leaking refrigerant. This issue can affect the minivan's overall comfort and functionality.
  • Engine Problems: The 2006 Pontiac Montana has experienced electrical system problems, with 8 NHTSA complaints for the electrical system at an average of 55,450 miles.
  • Engine Overheating: Some owners have reported that the engine runs hotter than before, which can be a sign of a more serious issue and may require immediate attention to prevent further damage.
  • Ghost Codes: Some Montana owners have experienced "ghost codes," where the vehicle displays codes that aren't actually present, leading to confusion and difficulty in diagnosing and fixing the underlying issues.
  • Fuel Gauge Malfunction: A few owners have reported that their gas gauge has gone from full to empty in just a few minutes, which can be dangerous and cause panic while driving.

These common problems with the Pontiac Montana can lead to inconvenience, costly repairs, and potential safety hazards. It is crucial for Montana owners to be aware of these issues and address them promptly to maintain the vehicle's reliability and longevity.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-10-01
  • VIN: 1GMDU03L86D
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: WHEN HAVING MY OIL CHANGED AT A GARAGE WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS ON THE LIFT BOTH FRAME RAILS HAD SEVERE RUST DAMAGE. SINCE THIS IS WHAT GIVES THE UNIBODY FRAME IT'S STRENGTH, WHY DIDN'T GM ZINC COAT THEM OR APPLY RUST PROOFING? I LIVE IN SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN WHERE THEY USE SALT ON THE ROADS IN WINTER. SEEING GM IS ALSO IN MICHIGAN YOU WOULD THINK THEY WOULD BE AWARE OF THIS AND ACT ACCORDINGLY? THE ONLY REASON I CAN THINK OF IS TO SAVE MONEY, INCREASE PROFITS, AT THE EXPENSE OF THE VEHICLE BEING SAFE FOR THE CONSUMER. I DON'T SEE DESIGNING THE FRAME RAILS TO LAST FOR 20-25 YEARS FOR SAFETY REASONS AS BEING UNREASONABLE.

  • VIN: 1GMDX33L26D
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: MY WIFE WAS DRIVING ALONG A COUNTRY ROAD WHEN THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR BALL JOINT SEPARATED, CAUSING THE REAR TO DROP AND PULLING THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE. THANKFULLY, IT WAS NOT THE DRIVER'S SIDE, BECAUSE SHE WAS PASSING A SCHOOL AND THE BUSES WERE LEAVING. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A GARAGE WHERE WE INSPECTED IT. ALTHOUGH THE BALL JOINT WAS A LIFETIME LUBRICATED UNIT, IT WAS WORN AND FAILED. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, THE DRIVER'S SIDE WAS WORN AND, IN THE INTEREST OF SAFETY, WAS REPLACED, AS WELL. TOTAL COST WAS $1403.44. WHEN RESEARCHING FOR RECALLS, I DISCOVERED THAT THERE IS A RECALL IN CANADA FOR THIS EXACT PROBLEM ON THIS VEHICLE, BUT THERE IS NONE IN THE US, ALTHOUGH THEY WERE ALL BUILT IN THE SAME PLANT!. TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-06-24
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: I PURCHASED 4 GOODYEAR ASSURANCE TOURING TIRES (P225/60R17 98T) FROM SAM'S CLUB IN MAY, 2011. THEY'VE BEEN REGULARLY INSPECTED, BALANCED AND ROTATED AS PART OF SAM'S CLUB TIRE WARRANTIES. ON JANUARY 28, 2011, WE HAPPENED TO PARK THE VAN JUST RIGHT SO THAT THE TIRES WERE TURNED SHARPLY TO THE LEFT. AT THAT TIME IT WAS VISIBLY NOTICEABLE THAT THERE WAS A HUGE PIECE OF RUBBER MISSING (ABOUT 3-4 INCHES LONG AND 3 INCHES WIDE) FROM THE SIDEWALL AND METAL WAS EXPOSED. WE TOOK THE VAN TO SAM'S WHERE THEY FIRST TRIED TO SAY IT WAS DUE TO ALIGNMENT ISSUES (THE VAN HAD RECENTLY HAD THE ALIGNMENT FIXED), BUT WHEN IT WAS POINTED OUT THAT IT WAS NOT WORN COMPLETELY AROUND AND ONLY ON ONE SPOT, THEY REPLACED THE TIRE. WE THOUGHT NOTHING OF IT. ABOUT 2 MONTHS LATER, I WOKE UP TO DRIVE THE KIDS TO SCHOOL AND TIRE #2 WAS FLAT. BROUGHT IT IN TO SAM'S, THEY FOUND A NAIL OR SOMETHING IN IT, AND PLUGGED IT. BUT WHEN THEY TESTED IT LATER, IT WASN'T HOLDING AIR. THE SIDEWALL HAD A CRACK IN IT, NOT REPLACEABLE. CHANGED TIRE #2. APRIL 30, TRY TO LEAVE TO PICK UP KIDS FROM SCHOOL, TIRE #3 IS FLAT (HAD JUST DRIVEN ON IT THAT MORNING). TAKE IT TO SAM'S, HUGE CRACK IN THE SIDEWALL. AT THIS POINT, ITS NOT REALLY FUNNY ANYMORE. WONDERING WHAT KIND OF RECALL THIS TIRE MAY BE UNDER BECAUSE ITS NOT AVAILABLE AT THE STORE ANYMORE. JUNE 24, THE VAN WAS SHAKING AS WE WERE DRIVING, PULLED OVER, AND SURE ENOUGH, HUGE GASH OF EXPOSED METAL ON THE INSIDE SIDEWALL. FOUR TIRES IN LESS THAN 6 MONTHS, RUINED. TIRES RATED FOR 70,000 MILES AND WITH LESS THAN 25,000 MILES ON THEM. ALL HOLES, CRACKS, OR EXPOSED METAL ARE ON THE INSIDE SIDEWALL WHERE THE TIRE HAD STARTED TO BULGE. THANKFULLY, WE CAUGHT IT JUST IN TIME OR WE COULD HAVE BEEN IN A VERY SERIOUS ACCIDENT! SO DISAPPOINTED THAT THIS TIRE HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED AND THAT I'VE STILL HAD TO PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT TIRES!! *TR
