2002 Pontiac Montana problems
The Pontiac Montana is a minivan that was sold by General Motors under the Pontiac brand for model years 1997 to 2009. Its badge-engineered variants were the Chevrolet Venture and the Oldsmobile Silhouette in the first generation, and the Chevrolet Uplander, Saturn Relay, and Buick Terraza in the second generation. Prior to the 1997 model year, it was known as the Pontiac Trans Sport.
In 1996 for the 1997 model year, the Trans Sport added the Montana moniker as part of an available trim package. This package proved so popular the line was renamed Montana in 1998 for the 1999 model year in the United States and 1999 for the 2000 model year in Canada. When the van was redesigned in 2004 for the 2005 model year, the name was changed to Montana SV6. It was discontinued after the 2006 model year in the United States because of slow sales, but continued to be sold in Canada and Mexico until 2009. Since their introduction, the Pontiac minivans were GM's most popular minivans among consumers in Canada.
The Doraville, Georgia assembly plant which produced the Montana and its siblings closed on September 26, 2008. Sales of the Montana SV6 continued for Canada and Mexico until 2009, a year before the Pontiac brand was discontinued in 2010.

Common 2002 Pontiac Montana problems
The Pontiac Montana, produced between 1999 and 2006, has been known to have several common problems, primarily affecting the engine and transmission.
- Intake Manifold Gasket Failure
The most common issue in the Pontiac Montana is the intake manifold gasket failure, which affects models from 1999 to 2005.
- Erratic Shifting
Another common issue in the Montana is erratic shifting, which affects models from 1999 to 2006. This problem is caused by a faulty pressure control solenoid, which controls fluid pressure to the clutch's friction plate. Failed pressure control solenoids result in rough and delayed shifts and cause the transmission to make grinding or whining sounds. Replacing the faulty pressure control solenoid involves disassembling the transmission, which is costly and labor-intensive.
- Leaking Refrigerant
Some Montana owners have reported that their air-conditioning has stopped working due to leaking refrigerant in the minivan's system.
- Engine Problems
Engine problems are a significant concern for Pontiac Montana owners. Complaints include issues with the coil pack, which needs to be replaced, and the engine running hotter than before. Some owners have reported experiencing ghost codes, which are codes that are there but aren't. In some cases, the emissions systems in these vehicles can be touchy, leading to engine issues.
- Suspension and Handling
Some Montana owners have reported that the vehicle bounces and leans in turns as if it had no suspension. This issue can make the vehicle feel poorly built and unsafe to drive, especially in recent years.
- Transmission Issues
Transmission issues are also a concern for Montana owners, with some reporting that the transmission hiccups or makes grinding or whining sounds. These issues can be caused by a faulty pressure control solenoid or other transmission problems, leading to costly and labor-intensive repairs.
In summary, the Pontiac Montana has several common problems, primarily affecting the engine and transmission. These issues can lead to costly repairs and decreased safety, making it essential for owners to have their vehicles checked immediately as soon as the first symptoms of these problems emerge.

HE THEN WENT ONLINE TO CHECK ON A POSSIBLE PART FOR THE FUEL TANK AND CAME ACROSS A RECALL CHECK. I like the van, but we've been having some issues with the electric door not opening correctly over the past 18 months. We've also had some air conditioning problems and had to replace the brakes and wheel cylinders. Unfortunately, this van has been in the shop many times since our purchase, which has been quite frustrating. However, I'm grateful that we bought an extended warranty.

We are glad to have ample space for our family, friends, and gear, and the ride is comfortable. However, we have noticed some issues with the van. The engine does not seem powerful enough for its size, resulting in sluggish acceleration and very poor gas mileage. Additionally, the rear a/c can be quite loud. The exterior paint job has some flaws from the factory, and the front wiper system is not ideal for inclement weather as snow and ice can accumulate and cause the wipers to freeze up. Despite these issues, we are overall satisfied with the features and seating comfort.

This is a great looking van that is easy to drive. It has tons of room and a very flexible seating setup.

Your vehicle drives well and has good mileage. I have noticed that my 2001 model gets 21mpg, while my 1996 TransSport gets 25mpg in urban driving. It is a very comfortable vehicle, but it tends to devalue quickly, especially if it gets totaled. I strongly advise you to consider getting 'gap insurance', which will cover any difference between what you receive from the insurance company and what you still owe. This will give you peace of mind and protect your investment.

This minivan handles as well on the road as most cars. I've had the Montana less than a month, but I have nothing but praise for it so far. As a mother who once swore she'd never drive a minivan, I have been pleasantly surprised by the comfort and handling of this vehicle. The MontanaVision DVD system is an absolute must... totally worth the money. I have never had such peace in the car!

Within 7 months of owning the van, we noticed a faint hum in the engine when accelerating. Despite the dealership finding no issue, we experienced a breakdown in the transfer case which affected the transmission within a year of ownership. This could have been the cause of the initial hum. The dealership replaced both components, but unfortunately, 7 months later, we experienced the same issue while driving. We heard a 'pop' in the engine area, followed by a noise when releasing the accelerator, indicating another breakdown in the transfer case. We are currently awaiting GM to replace both the transfer case and transmission for the second time.

This vehicle has unfortunately experienced several issues, including the replacement of the intake gasket and now requiring the replacement of the head gasket at a cost of $822 plus $48 for the diagnostic. Additionally, there have been some concerns with interior noise and plastic cracking, as well as poor headlight range and exterior plastic issues. Despite these setbacks, it remains a reliable choice for long trips on the highway. It is important to address these issues promptly to ensure continued satisfaction with the vehicle.

I've owned this car for 3 months now and unfortunately, the intake gasket was already done when I bought it. Recently, the head gasket went out and I'm afraid it might be too expensive to fix. I had better luck with my rusty 91 Astro which only needed a y pipe. Maybe I should have gone with a Ford Taurus wagon for the family, but oh well, live and learn. I always wanted a Pontiac ever since I was little because I knew they were built better and stronger than GM, but unfortunately, this experience has been disappointing. I will have to reconsider buying Chevy or Pontiac again!

I really like this car! It's so comfortable and convenient, and it easily fits all the kids and dogs without any problems. However, I did experience some mechanical issues with the engine, which ended up costing me a lot of money and many days in the shop. Unfortunately, these issues started just after the warranty expired. As a result, I decided to switch back to gas-guzzling SUVs.

This is a great van for a growing family. It's comfortable, affordable, and solid. The fuel economy could be improved, but overall it's an effective vehicle.
