Oldsmobile Toronado problems
The Oldsmobile Toronado is a personal luxury car manufactured and marketed by the Oldsmobile division of General Motors from 1966 to 1992 over four generations. The Toronado was noted for its transaxle version of GM's Turbo-Hydramatic transmission, making it the first U.S.-produced front-wheel drive automobile since the demise of the Cord 810/812 in 1937.
The Toronado used the GM E platform introduced by the rear-wheel drive Buick Riviera in 1963 and adopted for the front-wheel drive 1967 Cadillac Eldorado. The three models shared the E platform for most of the Toronado's 26-year history.
The name "Toronado" had no prior meaning and was originally selected for a 1963 Chevrolet show car.

Common Oldsmobile Toronado problems
The Oldsmobile Toronado, a front-wheel-drive personal luxury coupe produced between 1966 and 1970, is known for its striking styling and engineering marvels. However, it also has some common problems that owners have reported over the years.
- Underhood fires: In the first year of production, 1966, there were reports of underhood fires in the Toronado. This issue was attributed to a recall to correct the problem, but specific details about the cause and the recall are not readily available.
- Engine fires: There are anecdotal reports of engine fires in the Toronado, but no hard data or specific sources have been found to confirm these incidents or recalls. It is essential to research and verify this information before making any conclusions.
- Fuel pump issues: Some owners have reported issues with the electric fuel pump in the gas tank, which can cause the car to not start after running for a while. In these cases, the car needs to cool down before it can be started again. This issue was reported in a brand-new 1992 Toronado Trofeo, and the solution was to replace the electric fuel pump.
- Drivetrain: The Toronado's front-wheel-drive unitized power package is essentially bulletproof, but it may require some specialized knowledge to understand and maintain. The drivetrain consists of a Turbo 400 transmission turned 180 degrees, with the final drive unit and half-shafts at the output end. The torque converter drives a wide link-belt chain, which then drives the THM425 input shaft. The trans/final drive unit is located on the driver side of the engine compartment, and the engine is offset a couple of inches to the passenger side for room.
- Suspension and steering: The Toronado's front-wheel-drive system and independent rear suspension provide a smooth and comfortable ride, but they may require more maintenance and adjustment than traditional rear-wheel-drive systems. The steering system is power-assisted, and the power steering pump may need to be replaced over time.
- Brakes: The Toronado's braking system may be underengineered, especially in models with drum brakes. The 1969-70 models have single-piston disc calipers, which are easier to live with than the 1967-8 4-piston units. However, all models have common rust issues in windshield A-pillars, lower fenders, and rear wheelhouses. It is essential to pay special attention to trunk areas, as the rear vent well drain tubes are often deteriorated or missing, which can allow water into the trunk.
- Soft rubber boots covering CV joints: The soft rubber boots covering the constant velocity (CV) joints up front often tear, allowing dirt and moisture/water to get into the joints and causing early wear on these expensive parts. This is something to look for on the Toronado.
- Comfortron system: The Comfortron system, which is a complex climate control system, is usually best left alone in the Toronado. The system uses many parts that are unique and different from usual A/C parts, and it may require unavailable factory diagnostic equipment to fix when it fails. Depending on how brave the owner is, they may choose to tackle this system or avoid it altogether.
In summary, the Oldsmobile Toronado is a unique and stylish personal luxury coupe with some common problems related to its front-wheel-drive system, engine, and brakes. It is essential to research and verify any specific issues and to be prepared for the potential maintenance and repair costs associated with owning this classic car.

I have a 91 Toronado from North Carolina with 126,000 miles on it, which is nothing. I have seen other GM cars with the same engine and transmission go literally a million miles as taxis! You know they get beat up and receive very little maintenance. The digital instrument panel is awesome to look at and full of features that even 90% of owners don't know are there. It's like a secret button-pushing that gets them out. The car has no rust at all! It rides and performs like a dream. The seats are perfect, the kind you don't want to get out of once you're planted. On a scale of 1 to 10, the style of the body is definitely a 20. It looks like a futuristic Thunderbird from way back. This is a rare car in high demand! I love it!

Your grandpa bought this car wrecked for your grandma in 1995. He fixed it up and she drove it until she got a van to haul the grandkids around. It's not a Trofeo, but it has the digital cluster and is all power. Your grandparents have both passed since, but you now have the Toronado. It's a fun car, and you've never seen another one in your area. It even does great in the snow!

What a great car! It's amazing that it has lasted so long with only a few minor repairs. The body is in great shape, even after 12 years of winter driving in Canada. The engine has been rebuilt and all accessories have been replaced, but the transmission is still original and working perfectly. It's clear that this car has been well taken care of and loved. Keep up the good work!

I have owned two of these cars over the past nine years and I must say, I have no complaints. I will be sad to part with this car as it has been incredibly reliable with only basic maintenance required. If I do decide to replace it, I will definitely be looking for a car that is just as nice, perhaps even a Cadillac!
Rudy Marquardt 2024-11-03
Vehicle year: 1992
I used to own an 88 Pontiac 6000 STE and was looking for a vehicle with good handling, ride, power, and comfort. The Trofeo is the perfect fit! The 3800 engine has more than enough power (170 horsepower) and a nice torque curve. The 4-wheel independent suspension is excellent at soaking up bumps and providing superior grip. The interior design is well laid out, although I have some concerns about the reliability of the VIC (touch-screen that controls audio, climate, trip computer, and other features). The headliner is starting to droop, but the overall interior design is well thought out. The exterior design is sophisticated and timeless, and GM did an excellent job with it.
