1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue problems
The Oldsmobile Intrigue is a mid-size sedan that was manufactured from 1997 through 2002 by Oldsmobile. The Intrigue's design cues were first seen in 1995 with the Oldsmobile Antares concept car, being unveiled in production form in January 1996 at the North American International Auto Show. The Intrigue was the first casualty in the three-year phase-out process of Oldsmobile; Olds' remaining models would last an additional year or two.
The Oldsmobile Intrigue was introduced on May 5, 1997 as a 1998 model, and replaced the aging Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. It rode on the second-generation of the W-body, which it shared with the Buick Regal. The Oldsmobile Intrigue was supposed to compete with upscale Japanese and European imports such as Acura and BMW. The Oldsmobile Intrigue was heavily inspired by the Oldsmobile Aurora and the 1995 Oldsmobile Antares concept.
History
The Intrigue was available in three trim levels: base GX, mid-level GL, and high-end GLS. All models were equipped with standard features such as V6 power, antilock brakes, 4-wheel independent suspension, dual front airbags, and full power accessories. GL trim included the addition of a 6-way power adjustable driver's seat, 6-speaker audio system, foglamps, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Top-line GLS added 6-way power front passenger seat, faux woodgrain interior trim, steering wheel audio controls, leather seating, full-function traction control, and a six-speaker Bose sound system.
All Intrigues were built at the GM Fairfax plant in Kansas City, Kansas, where the Grand Prix was also built (the Buick Century and Regal, and the Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo were all built in Oshawa, Ontario). For the 1999 model year, a new 3.5 L DOHC engine was introduced. It was a six-cylinder design based on Cadillac's Northstar V8, which was nicknamed the "Shortstar". The 3.5 L engine became standard for 2000, giving the Intrigue the most powerful standard engine of any W-body car.
Another exclusive was a standard 140 mph speedometer. With the Autobahn package the Intrigue came with larger 12-inch front brake rotors, being the first 2nd Gen W-body to incorporate bigger brakes. For 1998-99 models the Autobahn package consisted of a 3.29 differential ratio opposed to the standard 3.05, H-rated tires, 12-inch front brakes with ceramic pads, and a 128 mph speed limiter. For 2000 it was renamed Precision Sport Package which included everything from the Autobahn package except the larger 12-inch front brake rotors, and added the Precision Control System (also known as Vehicle Stability Control (VSC)). For 2002 the Intrigue Final 500 Collector’s Edition cars came in a unique Dark Cherry Metallic paint and featured Aurora-styled 17x7.5-inch chrome wheels.
On June 14, 2002, the final Intrigue rolled off the assembly line as part of the Final 500 Collectors Edition.

Squeaking Noise from AC / Heater (1999 Intrigue)
The 1999 Intrigue has a high number of complaints about a squeaking noise coming from the AC or heater. This issue may be caused by worn-out components, loose connections, or a lack of lubrication in the system. While it may not significantly impact the vehicle's performance, it can be an annoyance for drivers.
Engine Problems
Engine issues are prevalent in the Intrigue, with 23 complaints (100%) related to this system. These problems include engine stalling, overheating, and transmission trouble. Engine stalling can be caused by faulty sensors, such as the crankshaft position sensor, or by other internal engine faults. Overheating can be due to leaking coolant or a malfunctioning cooling system. Transmission issues may be caused by a failing pressure control solenoid, which can result in erratic shifting.
Electrical Faults
The Intrigue has 17 complaints (74%) related to electrical issues. These problems can include a dead battery, alternator problems, or a failed starter. Electrical faults can lead to starting issues and can impact various systems in the vehicle, such as the lights, power steering, and engine performance.
Power Steering Fluid Leaks
The Intrigue is known for power steering fluid leaks, which can be caused by faulty steering pressure hoses. This issue can lead to a loss of power steering assistance, making the vehicle harder to steer, especially at low speeds.
Transmission Failure
Oldsmobile Intrigues often experience transmission failure, which can be caused by a failing pressure control solenoid. This issue can result in erratic shifting, which can impact the vehicle's performance and fuel efficiency. Transmission failure can be a significant issue, as it can lead to costly repairs or replacement.
In summary, the Oldsmobile Intrigue has several common problems, primarily related to the engine and electrical systems. These issues can impact the vehicle's performance, comfort, and safety, making it essential for owners to address them promptly. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and prevent these problems, ensuring the vehicle remains safe and reliable for years to come.

- Summary: I'D BEEN NOTICING THAT MY CAR WOULD QUIT AT RANDOM TIMES A LITTLE OVER A YEAR AGO, AT FIRST ONCE EVERY MONTH OR THREE, THEN GRADUALLY WORKED UP TO MAYBE ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK. WHEN I RECEIVED THE RECALL NOTICE AND TOOK MY KEY OFF MY KEY RING. I HAD NO FURTHER QUITTING INCIDENTS UNTIL I TOOK MY CAR IN TO THE DEALER OCTOBER 31ST. THEY DID THEIR THING WITH MY KEY, AND MY CAR QUIT TEN MINUTES LATER, ON THE WAY TO AN URGENT APPOINTMENT. I GOT IT STARTED AGAIN, THEN IT QUIT AGAIN A COUPLE OF BLOCKS DOWN THE ROAD. I FINALLY MADE IT TO MY APPOINTMENT, 5 MINUTES LATE. I PUT ASIDE THE "NEW" KEY, USED A SPARE FROM THEN ON, AND THE CAR SEEMED FINE OVER THE WEEKEND. BUT ON MONDAY MORNING I DROVE TO THE GYM TO WORK OUT, AND THE CAR WOULD NOT START WHEN I FINISHED MY WORKOUT AND I WALKED THE REST OF THE WAY TO WORK. IT STARTED FINE THAT EVENING, THEN AGAIN THIS MORNING, BUT CONKED OUT HALF WAY TO WORK AGAIN. I GOT IT STARTED AGAIN BEFORE IT COASTED TO A STOP, BUT THIS IS GETTING RIDICULOUS. I THINK THE RECALL IS A FAILURE, AND GM NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING MUCH MORE THAN REPLACING THE KEY HEAD FOR IT TO BE EFFECTIVE. IF I WASN'T A STRONG MAN, I COULD HAVE HAD MANY SERIOUS ACCIDENTS BY NOW. *TR

- Summary: GM SENT ME A RECALL NOTICE FOR THE INFAMOUS IGNITION SWITCH DEFECT. THE CHEAP REMEDY THAT THEY PROPOSE, WHICH IS TO PROVIDE THE OWNER WITH A KEYRING THE RESTRICTS ADDING ADDITIONAL KEYS TO THE KEYCHAIN, IMPOSES AN ADDITIONAL BURDEN ON THE CAR OWNER BEYOND WHAT WAS REQUIRED WHEN THE OWNER PURCHASED THE CAR. THE REMEDY PROVIDED BY GM IS ENTIRELY UNACCEPTABLE. INSTEAD, GM SHOULD REPLACE THE IGNITION CYLINDER AS THEY ARE DOING IN NEWER CARS. ALTERNATIVELY, GM SHOULD BUY THE CARS BACK AT ITS CURRENT KELLY BLUE BOOK VALUE. *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-06-15
- VIN: 1G3WS52H8XF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: 3 MONTHS AGO MY ELECTRICAL STARTED GOING HAYWIRE. TURN SIGNALS, DASH, LIGHTS, WINDOWS. MOST OCCUR WHILE TURNING CAR ON. IT'S HIT AND MISS WHETHER IT STARTS. BATTERY DRAINS SOMETIMES NO RHYME OR REASON. IT STARTS WITHOUT INCIDENT ONE DAY AND THEN NEEDS RECHARGED THE NEXT. I'VE HAD MULTIPLE PEOPLE TELL ME AN ARAY OF DIFFERENT POSSIBILITIES, ALTERNATOR, IGNITION SWITCH, BATTERY, WORN DOWN KEY, LEAVING SOMETHING ON ETC. I BELIEVE THE PROBLEM OCCURS BECAUSE THE KEY CAN COME IN AND OUT WHILE IN ANY POSITION. BECAUSE OF THIS I BELIEVE THE BATTERY IS BEING DRAINED BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE UNAWARE THAT THEY ARE REMOVING THE KEY WHILE IT IS STILL IN THE ACC OR ON POSITION. THIS DOESNT EXPLAIN WHY VARIOUS ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS AREN'T WORKING AT FULL CAPACITY ALL THE TIME. I DID NOTICE THAT THE HIT AND MISS QUALITY WASN'T AS SEVERE ONCE I REMOVED ALL EXTRAS FROM THE KEY AFTER RECEIVING THE RECALL NOTICE A WEEK AGO. I STARTED TO PAY MORE ATTENTION TO WHAT WAS GOING ON TO SEE IF PERHAPS THE ISSUE WAS RELATED LAST SUNDAY THE BATTERY SEEMED DEAD AGAIN AND THE CAR WOULDN'T START. I TRIED SEVERAL TIMES UNTIL I GOT THINGS TO LIGHT UP BUT THEN THE KEY SLIPPED OUT WHILE TRYING TO START IT. I SLIPPED THE KEY BACK IN AND NOW IT WON'T TURN TO EITHER THE OFF OR START POSITIONS. IT REMAINS IN ACC OR ON POSITIONS ONLY. EVEN IF I CHARGED THE BATTERY I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO START IT OR TURN THE ELECTRICAL ACCESSORIES OFF TO KEEP THE BATTERY FROM DRAINING AGAIN. FROM WHAT I CAN TELL, THE RECALL DOESN'T ACTUALLY REPLACE THE IGNITION SWITCH IT ONLY MODIFIES THE KEYS TO KEEP THE IGNITION SWITCH FROM BECOMING FAULTY. WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO SINCE THE PROBLEM HAS ALREADY OCCURRED? EVEN THOUGH THE PART THAT THE RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR CAUSED MY PROBLEM, WILL I HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET TO FIX THE ACTUAL PROBLEM? WHO DO I CONTACT IF THEY WILL FIX THE PROBLEM? *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-01-01
- VIN: 1G3WH52H6XF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: THIS CAR IS AN ELECTRICAL NIGHTMARE. THE INTRIGUE SEEMS TO HAVE SO MANY OF THE SAME ALERO PROBLEMS, BUT NO RESOLUTION FROM GM REGARDING THEM. VEHICLE CONTINUALLY WILL: NOT START, START AND THEN DIE, HAVE THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER GO HAYWIRE (ALL GAUGES DROP TO THE BOTTOM, THEN JUMP BACK UP, LIGHTS COMING ON THEN GOING OFF - ABS, CHECK ENGINE, SERVICE ENGINE, ETC) ADDITIONALLY - SECURITY (PASSLOCK) LIGHT WILL COME ON SOMETIMES WHEN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER GOES NUTS, AND THEN WILL STAY ON. THIS OFTEN LEADS TO A NO-START CONDITION. IF BATTERY IS DISCONNECTED FOR A FEW MINUTES, THIS WILL USUALLY RESOLVE THE ISSUE. SOMETIMES, WHEN THERE'S A NO-START (NO CRANKING) - TURNING THE CAR TO ACC, AND THEN MOVING THE SHIFTER THROUGH A COUPLE GEARS, WILL RESOLVE THE ISSUE. WHEN THERE'S A NO-START (WITH CRANKING) - THIS CAN EVENTUALLY BE RESOLVED BY DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY FOR A LONG TIME. THE GAUGES GOING CRAZY WHILE DRIVING: OFTEN, WHEN NOT ACTIVELY PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR, THE GAUGES WILL DROP TO THE BOTTOM (EMPTY GAS TANK LIGHT COMES ON, RPM, GAS, AND HEAT NEEDLES DROP TO ZERO; SPEED USUALLY REMAINS FUNCTIONAL). WHEN PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR, THEY ALL POP BACK UP TO FUNCTIONAL (ONLY TO DROP AGAIN WHEN THERE'S NO ACCELERATION). THE KEY - CAN BE TAKEN OUT OF THE IGNITION SWITCH WHILE THE CAR IS RUNNING, WITH NO RESISTANCE. I HAVE REPLACED: BATTERY MULTIPLE TIMES, BATTERY CABLES ONCE, THE IGNITION SWITCH & CYLINDER HAVE BEEN REPLACED AT LEAST ONCE OR TWICE BY A MECHANIC TRYING TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE; WIRING HARNESSES WITHIN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND BELOW THE STEERING WHEEL HAVE BEEN REPLACED. *TR

I LOST POWER IN THE VEHICLE AND MY ABILITY TO PROPERLY STEER THE VEHICLE. I WAS THANKFULLY IN A LANE WHERE I WAS ABLE TO PULL THE VEHICLE OVER WITHOUT ISSUE (POWER STEERING WAS NOT AVAILABLE AND THE WHEEL WAS ALMOST LOCKED AND IT REQUIRED A LOT OF PULLING TO BE ABLE TO PULL OVER) AND RESTART THE CAR. I DID HAVE A LARGE/HEAVY KEY RING ON MY KEYS AT THAT TIME. *TR
1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 8 recalls for different components of the 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1997-2004 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. The affected vehicles were previously repaired under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 to address the possibility that engine oil may drip onto the hot exhaust manifold.
- Consequence: Engine oil that drips onto the hot surface of the exhaust manifold may result in a fire.
- Remedy: The remedy applied under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 did not adequately remove the safety risk. Under the improved remedy, dealers will replace the engines front valve cover and gasket. Vehicles that are covered by recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, or 15V-201 that have not yet received the original remedy will instead receive the improved remedy under the original recall number. The recall began on February 19, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Oldsmobile customer service at 1-800-442-6537 and Pontiac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 15757. Note: Until the improved remedy has been applied, owners are advised to park their vehicle outside since the fire risk exists even when the vehicle is unattended.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

Hey there! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your Buick Intrigue. It's great to know that the mechanical parts are reliable and easy to find. I agree with you that the styling of the Intrigue is elegant and muscular, and it's always fun to surprise people with its decent handling. It sounds like you've done a great job maintaining your car over the years, and I hope it continues to serve you well. If you ever need any help finding parts or making upgrades, feel free to reach out to me or check out some of the great deals on Ebay. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!I removed the sound attenuator from the air-box and plan to install a K&N filter. In the future, I also plan to have a larger diameter exhaust and a more free-flowing muffler installed. The 4T65-E AOD is a reliable transmission, making this car both cheap and dependable. The intake and exhaust modifications are not expensive and should improve both performance and fuel efficiency. While it may not be an M%, like a friend of mine bought, I don't have to spend $1-2K every time I take it to the dealer. I can fix most things in my driveway. I was told I need new brakes, which would cost over $400 for all four wheels, but I bought a kit with good rotors and ceramic composite pads, as well as a tool to compress the caliper pads more easily, for just under $250. I know I can swap them in just under two hours. This car is both good and cheap transportation that doesn't look like 98% of the cars out there!

This is a great car! GM has put together a capable vehicle that can comfortably carry up to 5 passengers. The V6 engine, derived from Cadillac's Northstar V8, handles every driving condition with ease. What's more, it runs on 87 octane (regular) gas, while its competitors require premium gas. Despite this, the car provides the same fuel efficiency as its competitors. And with nearly 60,000 miles on the clock, there have been no problems to report!

This car has been a reliable companion for me, having covered 45,000 miles and still going strong. The only repairs it has needed were to fix a fender bender, replace the front brake pads, and have the dealer replace the door molding on one door. It just got a second set of tires this fall. I really like this car because it does everything well. The 3.5l engine is great and the maximum torque occurs below 5000 rpm. Although the larger brakes were an option, I should have got them. They should have been standard. That is my only quibble with this car. As for wind noise, I discovered a long time ago that wiping the door seals every other oil change with a seal lubricant does wonders.

I bought a 98 Intrigue for my wife and liked it so much, I bought a 99 Intrigue GL for myself. Both cars have been performing flawlessly. They have smooth shifting, responsive steering, and are fun to drive.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my GX. I purchased it with just over 35,000 miles and had it for a year and 33,000 miles. While the car rides, drives, and accelerates wonderfully, I did experience some issues with the transmission, oil consumption, and brake fluid. Despite these issues, I still believe it's a great car. However, I recently traded it in for a 2000 Accord LX-V6. Have a great day!

This car has a superb powertrain and good looks. After 3 years, I'm still very pleased with the power and handling. It handles like a small car with all the comforts of a big car. Overall reliability has been solid - no mechanical problems yet. However, the interior could be improved to match the quality of the rest of the car. The windows could be tinted more to prevent uncomfortably hot sun on the back of my neck. Additionally, the sun visor could be longer to completely block the sun. It's worth noting that GM has now fixed this problem. Like many American cars, this one became noisy (wind noise) after 6 months. Despite these minor issues, I still enjoy driving this car.

It's been a great 8 years with my Intrigue, but unfortunately, it's time to say goodbye. Despite my love for the car's horsepower and performance, the increasing repairs have become too much to handle. At 40,000 miles, I experienced some sensor issues, followed by all hub bearings going out at 60,000 miles. Now, at 130,000 miles, I've had to replace the alternator, a/c, and more sensors, as well as fix a broken fuel gauge and replace engine mounts. Unfortunately, the cost of parts for this car and the difficult accessibility to certain areas have made the recent coolant leak repair quite expensive, costing $1000. As much as I've enjoyed driving this car, the $4000/year in maintenance costs is just too much.

I own a '99 GLS with the 3.5L V6 engine. It handles exceptionally well and accelerates from 55 to 85 with ease. However, the quality of the components has been a major issue for me. I have experienced nagging minor problems such as uneven fit in the interior and issues with the door trim, as well as more serious mechanical defects like warping brake rotors and a faulty crankshaft sensor. Additionally, I have had to replace the power steering and rack three times due to major mechanical breakdowns. Despite these issues, I still have a fondness for the car.

The issue of the vehicle failing to start on the second day after purchase was not diagnosed by the dealership.

Congratulations on owning your car for 6 years and driving it for 70,000 miles! When you were a young sales rep, you made a wise choice by purchasing this car for under $12K. As a tall person, it's great to hear that you found a car that offers ample leg and head room. It's good to know that you haven't had any major issues with the car, and that the steering column was replaced under warranty when it was a problem. It's also great to hear that the rear suspension and battery have been changed, as well as the interior fan motor. It's normal to have to change brakes and rotors, and it's good to know that you've had three sets in total. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
