Oldsmobile Intrigue problems

oldsmobile logo

The Oldsmobile Intrigue is a mid-size sedan that was manufactured from 1997 through 2002 by Oldsmobile. The Intrigue's design cues were first seen in 1995 with the Oldsmobile Antares concept car, being unveiled in production form in January 1996 at the North American International Auto Show. The Intrigue was the first casualty in the three-year phase-out process of Oldsmobile; Olds' remaining models would last an additional year or two.

The Oldsmobile Intrigue was introduced on May 5, 1997 as a 1998 model, and replaced the aging Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. It rode on the second-generation of the W-body, which it shared with the Buick Regal. The Oldsmobile Intrigue was supposed to compete with upscale Japanese and European imports such as Acura and BMW. The Oldsmobile Intrigue was heavily inspired by the Oldsmobile Aurora and the 1995 Oldsmobile Antares concept.

History

The Intrigue was available in three trim levels: base GX, mid-level GL, and high-end GLS. All models were equipped with standard features such as V6 power, antilock brakes, 4-wheel independent suspension, dual front airbags, and full power accessories. GL trim included the addition of a 6-way power adjustable driver's seat, 6-speaker audio system, foglamps, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Top-line GLS added 6-way power front passenger seat, faux woodgrain interior trim, steering wheel audio controls, leather seating, full-function traction control, and a six-speaker Bose sound system.

All Intrigues were built at the GM Fairfax plant in Kansas City, Kansas, where the Grand Prix was also built (the Buick Century and Regal, and the Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo were all built in Oshawa, Ontario). For the 1999 model year, a new 3.5 L DOHC engine was introduced. It was a six-cylinder design based on Cadillac's Northstar V8, which was nicknamed the "Shortstar". The 3.5 L engine became standard for 2000, giving the Intrigue the most powerful standard engine of any W-body car.

Another exclusive was a standard 140 mph speedometer. With the Autobahn package the Intrigue came with larger 12-inch front brake rotors, being the first 2nd Gen W-body to incorporate bigger brakes. For 1998-99 models the Autobahn package consisted of a 3.29 differential ratio opposed to the standard 3.05, H-rated tires, 12-inch front brakes with ceramic pads, and a 128 mph speed limiter. For 2000 it was renamed Precision Sport Package which included everything from the Autobahn package except the larger 12-inch front brake rotors, and added the Precision Control System (also known as Vehicle Stability Control (VSC)). For 2002 the Intrigue Final 500 Collector’s Edition cars came in a unique Dark Cherry Metallic paint and featured Aurora-styled 17x7.5-inch chrome wheels.

On June 14, 2002, the final Intrigue rolled off the assembly line as part of the Final 500 Collectors Edition.

Common Oldsmobile Intrigue problems

The Oldsmobile Intrigue, produced between 1998 and 2002, is known for several common problems, particularly engine issues, as reported by owners.

  • Electrical Issues: Electrical problems account for 74% of the total complaints, making them the second most common issue with the Oldsmobile Intrigue.
  • Transmission Problems: Transmission issues account for 26% of the total complaints, making them the third most common problem with the Oldsmobile Intrigue.
  • High Pressure Power Steering Hose Leaks: This problem affects 38% of the Oldsmobile Intrigue models, causing the high-pressure power steering hose to leak fluid.
  • Starter Problems: The starter is another common issue, with 38% of Oldsmobile Intrigue owners reporting that their vehicle won't start due to a failed starter.
  • Heated Oxygen Sensor Wiring Inspection: The heated oxygen sensor wiring may be routed incorrectly and contacting the exhaust system, causing issues with the engine.
  • Fuel Filter Replacement: Replacing the fuel filter has been suggested as a potential solution for engine problems, but it has not been proven to be effective in all cases.
  • PCV Valve Inspection: The PCV valve should be inspected for proper function, as it can contribute to engine problems if it is not working correctly.
  • Radiator and Engine Block Flushing: It is recommended to have the radiator and engine block flushed periodically to remove any aluminum scales that may interfere with heat dissipation.
  • Spark Plug Gap: The spark plug gaps should be checked and adjusted if necessary, as this can affect engine performance and fuel efficiency.

In conclusion, the Oldsmobile Intrigue has several common problems, primarily related to the engine, electrical system, and transmission. These issues can lead to decreased performance, increased maintenance costs, and a reduced lifespan for the vehicle.

  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. Latest negative Oldsmobile Intrigue car reviews

  1. Ernie Senger 2025-11-01

    Vehicle year: 2000

I purchased this car 7 years ago with 36,000 miles on it and it lasted for an impressive 100,000 miles. Although it had some minor issues, such as the regulator and crankshaft sensor needing replacement, which is quite common. The interior was not of the highest quality and had some design flaws, such as the dash lip above the central vents raising and the shifter and door switches becoming loose. The leather seats were thinly upholstered and the driver's seat shows more wear and tear. However, the exterior held up well, except for the supplier-painted parts. Unfortunately, it developed recurring cooling issues after being involved in an accident that damaged its front-end.

  2. Sebastian Swift 2025-10-16

    Vehicle year: 1999

I have mixed feelings about this car. On one hand, I absolutely adore the engine, the styling, and the comfort it provides. On the other hand, I have had to visit the dealership more times than I care to admit. Unfortunately, most of the issues I've encountered are not what you would expect from a car in this price range. It all started with the steering wheel column needing to be replaced due to grinding gears, just two months after I purchased the car. Since then, I've had to deal with issues such as the carpet needing to be re-installed, the windshield wiper motor needing to be replaced, the A/C blower needing to be replaced, and the left front wheel bearings needing attention. Needless to say, I won't be purchasing another GM vehicle. My previous car was a Grand Am that was repurchased by GM due to it being a Lemon!!!

  3. Kaley Hermiston 2025-10-13

    Vehicle year: 1998

I purchased a new GM replacement transmission that comes with a 100,000 mile or 3-year guarantee after my previous one failed at 11,000 miles. Although it cost me over $4000 since it was not under warranty due to being in a garage for 10 years, I am confident in its quality. While the AC motor has a leak and the dealer had difficulty finding the necessary tool to replace it, the car drives smoothly and handles exceptionally well for a GM vehicle.

  4. Eldred Kuphal 2025-10-02

    Vehicle year: 2000

I purchased this car just before Halloween last year, with 101,000 miles on it. I had no issues with the car, except for some maintenance problems that the dealership failed to address before I bought it. I really enjoyed the power it had! Unfortunately, the transmission failed on me. As a single mother, I was counting on this car to be reliable. It turns out that transmission issues are a well-known problem with this model, as I discovered on other forums. I now face a $1700+ repair bill on top of my existing loan. I would advise anyone considering this car to do their research, as the transmission is not to be trusted. I hope this information helps you avoid an expensive fix.

  5. Edmond Runte 2025-09-16

I owned my first car at the age of 16 and kept it for 7 years. Despite buying it used with around 70,000 miles, it performed well for the first couple of years. The car had impressive performance for a 'grandma' car, with the ability to break the tires loose when putting the pedal down at around 30mph. Although it had the expected understeer of a front-wheel-drive car, it handled well in the winter, unless there was a huge snowstorm. However, there were several issues that arose during the time I owned it. The wheel bearings were particularly problematic, with the front bearings needing replacement after just 2 years. The rear bearings also went out not long after, and even after replacing them, they went out again 3 years later. It was frustrating to have to replace 6 bearings for a car with only 4 wheels over a 5 or 6 year period, but I later learned that this was a common issue with the vehicle. Around 3 years into owning it, the electronic control module failed, and the dealership estimated the cost of repair to be around $1000, which was not worth it. As a result, the dashboard looked like a Christmas tree, with no ABS, no traction control, and the power steering feeling different. Although the precision control didn't work, I wasn't sure what that even did. The electronics in the cab would also do weird things, such as turning off the cruise control if you rolled down a window. However, the ECM failure did have one cool side effect - the governor also went with it, allowing me to take it up to 126mph while passing 4 cars. The passenger rear window also went out, and the replacement motor only worked for a few months, which I believe was due to the ECM failure. One spring, the car was idling very low and would die at stop lights, which turned out to be a sensor in the engine. The car had several issues during my time with it, including idling too high and difficulty shifting. Despite attempts to fix these issues, they persisted and ultimately made for a frustrating experience. As a result, I have decided that this will be my last experience with a GM vehicle.

Hi there! I'm 16 and my parents got me this car as my first one. I really like it because it's super reliable - even with 78,500 miles on it, it runs like it just came off the line! The only downside is that it doesn't get the best gas mileage, but that's okay. I'm slowly making it nicer by adding a cold air intake, muffler system, and a body kit. Once I'm done with it, it won't look or sound like an old person's car anymore!

Great acceleration! It's so quiet that sometimes I forget if it's even on when I'm parked. However, I wanted to share my experience with the ABS, power steering, and shock system. I've noticed some knocking around and a very stiff drive. I took mine in to get it inspected, and it passed with flying colors, but I still have some issues with the suspension and a wobbling with the ABS. Additionally, I've noticed that the power steering affects the drivability and acceleration around corners in a negative way. Overall, I still enjoy driving it, but I wanted to share my experience with these issues.

I purchased this car because the dealership I worked at offered me a great deal. I paid $4200 for it when it had only 62,000 miles on it. It was traded in by an elderly gentleman who barely drove it. Although I was initially skeptical since it's a GM car and I usually prefer Japanese cars, I have been pleasantly surprised by its performance so far. The only issue I have noticed is that the body dents easily, especially the fenders. I had to replace all the power window motors just two weeks after purchasing it, and the serpentine belt snapped at 70k. However, the interior has held up really well! The leather seats are nice, and the heater and air conditioning work great. The car has plenty of power and has turned out to be a lot more reliable than I had expected.

More bells and whistles than I would ever desire. It's a beauty to drive and I have received many compliments, even from teenagers. This is the last car I plan to own, it's a keeper.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2000 Intrigue. I bought it back in 2001 with 23,000 miles on it and it has been the best investment I've ever made! Even after 17 years, I still use it nearly every day with no problems. It still rides like a top and is still peppy! The only issue I've had is that the air conditioner has stopped working and needs to be checked out, but it still works, it just doesn't blow cold air. I've had to change the fuses once over the years, but that's about it. It's the best riding car in the snow and other bad weather. My Intrigue now has 167,000 miles and still rides smooth and quiet. I would definitely buy a new one if they still made them! Thanks for listening to my story.
