Oldsmobile Cutlass problems

oldsmobile logo

The Oldsmobile Cutlass was a series of automobiles produced by General Motors' Oldsmobile division between 1961 and 1999. At its introduction, the Cutlass was Oldsmobile's entry-level model; it began as a unibody compact car, but saw its greatest success as a body-on-frame intermediate. The Cutlass was named after Vought F7U Cutlass, as well as the type of sword, which was common during the Age of Sail.

Introduced as the top trim level in Oldsmobile's compact F-85 Series, the Cutlass evolved into a distinct series of its own, spawning numerous variants. These included the 4-4-2 muscle car in 1964, the upscale Cutlass Supreme in 1966, the high-performance Hurst/Olds in 1968, and the Vista Cruiser station wagon.

By the 1980s, Oldsmobile was using the Cutlass as a sub-marque, with numerous vehicle lines bearing the name simultaneously. The compact Cutlass Calais, midsize Cutlass Ciera, Cutlass Cruiser station wagon, and flagship midsize Cutlass Supreme were among the models available during this time.

In the 1990s, Oldsmobile began moving away from its traditional model lines, with other legacy vehicle nameplates like the 98 and 88 being discontinued in 1996 and 1999, respectively. The Cutlass name was likewise retired in 1999 in favor of the all-new Oldsmobile Alero, ending nearly 40 years of continuous Cutlass production.

Common Oldsmobile Cutlass problems

The Oldsmobile Cutlass has been a popular car for decades, but like all vehicles, it has its share of common problems. Fuel tank issues are a common problem in the Oldsmobile Cutlass, with leaks, rust, or debris causing poor fuel economy and fuel system problems. The fuel tank should be inspected regularly to prevent these issues.

The engine is another significant area of concern in the early Cutlass Supremes, with the 330 cubic inch V8 engine known to develop issues with the carburetor and distributor. These problems can lead to poor performance and rough idling, which can be fixed with a carburetor rebuild or distributor replacement.

The brakes are also a common source of problems in the first generation Cutlass Supreme. The front drum brakes are known to have problems with overheating, which can cause the brake shoes to glaze over and lose their effectiveness. Additionally, the brake master cylinder is prone to leaks, which can cause a loss of braking power.

The steering system is another area of concern in the first generation Cutlass Supreme. The power steering pump is known to develop leaks, which can cause the power steering fluid to leak out and lead to difficulty in steering the car.

The electrical system is also a common area of concern in the Oldsmobile Cutlass. The wiring harnesses are prone to deterioration, which can cause problems with the car's lights and electrical components. This issue can be particularly problematic in the 1989-1997 Cutlass Supreme, where the dashboard cluster gauges may stop working or provide inaccurate readings due to a faulty instrument cluster or bad sensor. The car's lighting system may also fail to work properly, and the ignition system may experience problems with the ignition switch, causing the car to not start or stall while driving.

The sedan model of the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, produced from 1988 to 1997, shares many of the same issues as its coupe counterpart but also has some unique problems. Electrical problems are particularly common in the sedan model, particularly with the power windows and door locks. This is often caused by faulty wiring or malfunctioning switches, and can be frustrating for owners. Transmission problems are also common in the sedan model, with some models experiencing slipping or jerking when shifting gears, which can lead to costly repairs if not addressed promptly. The sedan also shares the same rust problems as the coupe, particularly around the wheel wells and rocker panels, which can lead to structural damage if not addressed. The fuel system, particularly with the fuel pump and fuel injectors, can also cause problems with starting the vehicle and reduced fuel efficiency.

The suspension, particularly with the struts and shocks, can also be a problem in the sedan model, leading to a bumpy ride and decreased handling, which can be dangerous if not addressed. Overall, while the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme is a reliable vehicle, it does have its share of common issues that owners should be aware of and address promptly to ensure the longevity and safety of their vehicle.

  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING MY FIANCES OLDSMOBILE, I NOTICED A BAD SHUDDER UNDER LIGHT TO MODERATE BRAKING. UPON INVESTIGATION, I FOUND THAT THE FRONT LEFT CONTROL ARM HAD RUSTED SO BADLY THAT IT HAD CRACKED IN SEVERAL PLACES. THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY HAD BEEN SO BADLY COMPROMISED I AM SURE THAT HAD I NEEDED TO BRAKE SUDDENLY THE CONTROL ARM WOULD HAVE FAILED CAUSING THE RIGHT WHEEL TO COME OF THE VEHICLE. I WAS ABLE TO FLEX PART OF THE CONTROL ARM BY HAND UPON REMOVAL FROM THE VEHICLE. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THIS IS A VERY EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF DECAY ON SUCH A CRITICAL PART ON A CAR WITH LESS THAN 100,000 MILES. THE RIGHT CONTROL ARM WAS RUSTY, BUT IT SEEMED STRUCTURALLY SOUND. THIS LEADS ME TO SUSPECT THE LEFT ONE MAY HAVE BEEN DEFECTIVE AND THAT THERE COULD BE MORE DEFECTIVE CONTROL ARMS OUT THERE. I REPLACED THE CONTROL ARM BUT KEPT THE OLD ONE IN CASE GM OR THE NHTSA WISHES IT TO BE SHIPPED TO THEM FOR ANALYSIS. I ALSO HAVE DETAILED PICTURES OF THE PART TO PROVIDE UPON REQUEST. I LIVE IN MN WHICH IS A STATE WHERE ROAD SALT IS USED IN THE WINTER. *TR

THIS VEHICLE IS THE IDENTICAL LAYOUT OF THE CHEVROLET MALIBU WHICH HAS BEEN RECALLED. I SENT A COUPLE OF E-MAIL MESSAGES TO THE GM CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AND JUST RECEIVED A PHONE CALL EXPLAINING TO ME THAT AT THIS TIME THEY HAD NO INTENTION OF DOING A RECALL ON THE OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS FOR THE IGNITION SWITCH. EVEN THOUGH I HAVE NOT ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM WITH MY IGNITION SWITCH AS OF YET, I DEEM IT A SAFETY ISSUE WHICH GM SHOULD FIX. I DO NOT KNOW IF ANYONE ELSE HAS COMPLAINED OF SIMILAR ISSUES AS MINE, BUT I WANTED TO INFORM YOU OF MY CONCERNS. I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS IS THE PROPER FORUM FOR THIS, SO IF NOT, PLEASE FORWARD MY CONCERNS TO THE PROPER AUTHORITIES. THANK YOU *TR

WHEN IT HAPPENS I JUST QUICKLY PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND RESTART IMMEDIATELY. THIS IS A 1998 OLDS CUTLASS. • Date Of Incident: 2011-01-25
  • Date Complaint: 2013-10-21
  • VIN: 1G3WH52M8VF
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: WE BOUGHT THE CAR IN 2010 FROM A USED CAR DEALER. UPON 6 MONTHS OF DRIVING WE NOTICED A STEERING PROBLEM THAT WAS HARD TO THE LEFT AND JUST DIDN'T SEEM RIGHT. THE ENGINE ALSO HAD OVERHEATING AND GASKET PROBLEMS SO WE HAD THE ENGINE REPLACED. UPON TEST DRIVING THE VEHICLE THE MECHANIC WAS DRIVING AND THE POWER STEER HAD A COMPLETE FAILURE AND RAN HIM TOWARDS ONCOMING TRAFFIC AND THEN BACK ANOTHER DIRECTION. UPON RETURN TO THE SHOP HE CONCLUDED THE ENTIRE RACK WAS BROKEN AND NEEDED REPLACED. AT THE TIME IN 2011 WE WERE NOT AWARE THAT GM RECALLED THE LOWER PINION BEARING IN THE POWER STEERING RACK IN 2003 SO WE HAD PAID FOR A NEW RACK AND PINION TO BE REPLACED. THERE EVIDENTLY WAS LEFTOVER DEBRIS IN THE RACK IN PINION FROM THE ORIGINAL PART FAILURE AND NOW HAS RUINED THE 2ND RACK AND PINION. MY COMPLAINT IS THAT IN 2004 OUR CAR IS LISTED AS A CAR THAT WAS AFFECTED AND HAD BEEN SERVICED IN 2004 IN GEORGIA. THE ONLY THING REPLACED WAS A TINY SNAP RING, IN WHICH THE DETAILED REPAIR PDF STATES IN MULTIPLE INCIDENCES THAT IT IS UP TO THE MECHANIC TO DECIDE HOW MUCH FAILURE HAS TAKEN PLACE WHAT TO DO AND THAT ANY MISTEPS WILL LEAD TO OTHER PART FAILURES!! WE BOUGHT THIS CAR W/ VERY LOW MILEAGE SO AT THE POINT THEY SAY THEY FIXED THE CAR AND WHEN IT BROKE WAS APPROX. 30,000 MILES. THEY EITHER DID NOT FIX CORRECTLY OR THEY DID NOT TOUCH THE CAR AT ALL BECAUSE THE VERY DESCRIPTION TO WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR CAR WAS EXACTLY WHAT IS LISTED AS THE FAILURE OF THE PART. WE WOULD LIKE THE ORIGINAL PART FAILURE THAT IS NOW SHREDDED INTO HUNDREDS OF PIECES CAUSING FUTURE RACK AND PINION FAILURES TO BE FLUSHED CLEAN AND HONESTLY SHOULD REPLACED THE ENTIRE RACK BECAUSE THEY NEVER FIXED THE PART ORIGINALLY OR THEY DIDN'T FIX IT CORRECTLY AND THE ORIGINAL PART FAILED EXACTLY AS STATED ON THE RECALL TO THE POINT THE MECHANIC ALMOST WRECKED OUR CAR. *TR

Overall, it drives well. However, like other midsize GM cars, it has needed frequent repairs such as electrical switch malfunctions and frequent brake replacements. Despite this, it has done well for having 140,000 miles. I understand that it can be concerning to wonder when something will need fixing next, but I hope that you continue to enjoy driving it.

I bought a car for my wife and myself. Unfortunately, I had to take it in for brake repairs four times before the car even reached 20,000 miles. Each time, I was given a lame excuse that it was due to our driving habits. Eventually, I got fed up and decided to take matters into my own hands. I went to Autozone and purchased the best rotors and brake pads available, installed them myself, and have not had a problem since. The car now has around 62,000 miles on it. I have had similar problems with a Chrysler product in the past, and as a result, I will never buy another Olds/GM or Chrysler product again. On the other hand, my Ford Ranger has over 100K miles and still runs great. All I have to do is check the oil and gas plugs.

I have a 99 Cutlass GL that I mainly use for work. She's been a reliable companion with 47,000 miles on her and still running great. Other than standard maintenance like oil, lube, and filter changes, she's never had any down time. It's a shame that 99 was the last year for this car.

The outside styling may not be the most exciting, but it still has a classic and timeless look. Inside, the car is cozy and comfortable, although the rear seat may feel a bit tight. While the suspension is on the stiffer side, it provides a sporty and responsive feel. The car may not be the most powerful, but it still offers a fun and enjoyable driving experience.

My 1999 Cutlass has only 23,000 miles on it. Despite being vigilant about rotating and alignments, I had to have the brakes replaced at 21,000 miles. Now, I have been told that I need new tires. It is surprising that a car with such low mileage would require brake and tire replacements at under 25,000 miles. However, I am confident that my Cutlass is a reliable and enjoyable car overall.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it back in 1999 with only 18,000 miles on it and it's been a great ride ever since! The V6 engine is really powerful and makes driving it a lot of fun. I have had some issues with it, like the intake gaskets, alternator, and brakes, but I was able to fix them without too much trouble. Unfortunately, the camshaft broke at 178,000 miles and the engine was destroyed. But, I was able to get it back on the road by buying a junk yard engine and tranny with only 26,000 miles on them for just $1500! Now, it's pushing 190,000 miles and I plan to keep driving it until it can no longer be repaired. As someone who is 6'7

The ride is smooth and the inside looks expensive, all at a low price. It has great get-up-and-go and comfortably seats 5 people. Additionally, the fuel economy is great, and while there is a little road noise, it's not too noticeable.

Hey there! I just bought this car from my friend's grandmother who barely drove it. It had only 52,980 miles on it. I've been driving it for a month now and it's already at almost 54,000 miles. It's surprisingly fun to drive, even though it's considered a 'grandma' car. The leather interior is absolutely amazing. Overall, it's a fantastic car. I haven't had any issues with it, except for a small leak in the wiper fluid container.

Your car has 45,000 miles and is getting to its prime. While the engine has very nice acceleration, there is room for improvement in other areas such as the interior. However, it's important to keep in mind that you get what you pay for.

I have named my Alero Fred because we have been through so much together. He is the best car I've ever owned - very reliable, with a smooth ride and powerful engine.
