1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass problems
The Oldsmobile Cutlass was a series of automobiles produced by General Motors' Oldsmobile division between 1961 and 1999. At its introduction, the Cutlass was Oldsmobile's entry-level model; it began as a unibody compact car, but saw its greatest success as a body-on-frame intermediate. The Cutlass was named after Vought F7U Cutlass, as well as the type of sword, which was common during the Age of Sail.
Introduced as the top trim level in Oldsmobile's compact F-85 Series, the Cutlass evolved into a distinct series of its own, spawning numerous variants. These included the 4-4-2 muscle car in 1964, the upscale Cutlass Supreme in 1966, the high-performance Hurst/Olds in 1968, and the Vista Cruiser station wagon.
By the 1980s, Oldsmobile was using the Cutlass as a sub-marque, with numerous vehicle lines bearing the name simultaneously. The compact Cutlass Calais, midsize Cutlass Ciera, Cutlass Cruiser station wagon, and flagship midsize Cutlass Supreme were among the models available during this time.
In the 1990s, Oldsmobile began moving away from its traditional model lines, with other legacy vehicle nameplates like the 98 and 88 being discontinued in 1996 and 1999, respectively. The Cutlass name was likewise retired in 1999 in favor of the all-new Oldsmobile Alero, ending nearly 40 years of continuous Cutlass production.

Common 1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass problems
The Oldsmobile Cutlass, produced between 1961 and 1999, was a series of automobiles known for various issues that affected its reliability and performance. While the Cutlass was initially introduced as the top trim level in Oldsmobile's compact F-85 Series, it eventually evolved into a distinct series with numerous variants.
One of the most common problems across Oldsmobile models, including the Cutlass, is engine overheating due to coolant loss. This issue is often caused by leaks in the cooling system, which can lead to severe engine damage if not addressed promptly. Engine overheating is a significant concern, as it can result in engine failure and stalling, which can be dangerous during driving, especially in heavy traffic or at high speeds.
Another common problem in Oldsmobile vehicles, including the Cutlass, is steering trouble related to leaking power steering fluid. This issue can make the vehicle difficult to control, potentially leading to accidents. Drivers may notice a decrease in power steering performance, unusual noises, or a stiff steering wheel when turning, indicating a problem with the power steering system.
Malfunctioning exterior lights are also a common issue in Oldsmobile vehicles, including the Cutlass. This problem can affect the vehicle's visibility, making it difficult to see and be seen by other drivers, especially during nighttime driving or in poor weather conditions. Faulty headlights, tail lights, and brake lights can increase the risk of accidents and may also result in traffic violations.
Service brakes issues are another concern in Oldsmobile vehicles, including the Cutlass. Problems with the brake system can affect the vehicle's stopping ability, potentially leading to accidents. Drivers may notice unusual noises, vibrations, or a spongy brake pedal when applying the brakes, indicating a problem with the brake system.
Faulty electrical systems are a common issue in Oldsmobile vehicles, including the Cutlass. This problem can affect various vehicle functions, such as the power windows, power locks, and interior lights, making the vehicle less convenient and comfortable to use. Electrical issues can also lead to more severe problems, such as engine stalling or failure, which can be dangerous during driving.
Suspension problems are another concern in Oldsmobile vehicles, including the Cutlass. Issues with the suspension system can affect the vehicle's ride quality and handling, making it difficult to control, especially during turns or at high speeds. Drivers may notice unusual noises, vibrations, or a bumpy ride, indicating a problem with the suspension system.
While the Oldsmobile Cutlass has been known for these common problems, it's important to note that regular maintenance and timely repairs can help prevent or address these issues, ensuring the vehicle's reliability and performance.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-07-09
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING MY FIANCES OLDSMOBILE, I NOTICED A BAD SHUDDER UNDER LIGHT TO MODERATE BRAKING. UPON INVESTIGATION, I FOUND THAT THE FRONT LEFT CONTROL ARM HAD RUSTED SO BADLY THAT IT HAD CRACKED IN SEVERAL PLACES. THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY HAD BEEN SO BADLY COMPROMISED I AM SURE THAT HAD I NEEDED TO BRAKE SUDDENLY THE CONTROL ARM WOULD HAVE FAILED CAUSING THE RIGHT WHEEL TO COME OF THE VEHICLE. I WAS ABLE TO FLEX PART OF THE CONTROL ARM BY HAND UPON REMOVAL FROM THE VEHICLE. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THIS IS A VERY EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF DECAY ON SUCH A CRITICAL PART ON A CAR WITH LESS THAN 100,000 MILES. THE RIGHT CONTROL ARM WAS RUSTY, BUT IT SEEMED STRUCTURALLY SOUND. THIS LEADS ME TO SUSPECT THE LEFT ONE MAY HAVE BEEN DEFECTIVE AND THAT THERE COULD BE MORE DEFECTIVE CONTROL ARMS OUT THERE. I REPLACED THE CONTROL ARM BUT KEPT THE OLD ONE IN CASE GM OR THE NHTSA WISHES IT TO BE SHIPPED TO THEM FOR ANALYSIS. I ALSO HAVE DETAILED PICTURES OF THE PART TO PROVIDE UPON REQUEST. I LIVE IN MN WHICH IS A STATE WHERE ROAD SALT IS USED IN THE WINTER. *TR

Congratulations on owning your car for 12 years! It sounds like you took great care of it with regular maintenance. However, now that you have children, it's understandable that you need a car with more features like LATCH and auto windows. You mentioned that you had to replace a few parts over the years, but it's great to hear that the car was reliable and gave you warning lights when something needed attention. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

It all started when a girl wrecked into me and the insurance money got me a 1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass. The dealer was selling it for $3,800 and I managed to get it for $2,800 with 108K miles on it. Although my friend's dad, who is also a mechanic, warned me about this car being a lemon, I didn't believe him and it turned out to be a bad choice on my part. I had to replace the brakes, tires, pulley tensioner, water pump, head gasket, spark plugs and wires twice, alternator, and now the A/C has gone out. I've spent $3,000 on the car and that doesn't even include the $1,500 rims, new headlights, and complete stereo system. I'm at 125K miles and I'm afraid of more things going wrong, especially since I'm only 18 and going to college! I would advise staying away from this car!!!

Your car has 45,000 miles and is getting to its prime. While the engine has very nice acceleration, there is room for improvement in other areas such as the interior. However, it's important to keep in mind that you get what you pay for.

I have named my Alero Fred because we have been through so much together. He is the best car I've ever owned - very reliable, with a smooth ride and powerful engine.
-
Mechanically, it seems like one thing after another. I had some trouble with the rotors after just two years, and then the generator assembly and a lower gasket seal needed replacing. Thankfully, I had an extended warranty, otherwise the lower gasket seal would have cost me $700.

This car has the world's best thought-out interior ever! From cupholder locations to armrests and distance to the radio, this car makes everything effortless. I used to commute 75 miles to work, and this car made it easy. Unfortunately, after 211k miles, the poor thing finally died. I had been neglecting a leaky head gasket for a year, and apparently, the engine couldn't handle 300 degrees. But it sure could handle a lot of other abuse!
Mackenzie Rippin 2024-11-23
Overall, it drives well. However, like other midsize GM cars, it has needed frequent repairs such as electrical switch malfunctions and frequent brake replacements. Despite this, it has done well for having 140,000 miles. I understand that it can be concerning to wonder when something will need fixing next, but I hope that you continue to enjoy driving it.
Nolan Ortiz 2024-11-19
I bought a car for my wife and myself. Unfortunately, I had to take it in for brake repairs four times before the car even reached 20,000 miles. Each time, I was given a lame excuse that it was due to our driving habits. Eventually, I got fed up and decided to take matters into my own hands. I went to Autozone and purchased the best rotors and brake pads available, installed them myself, and have not had a problem since. The car now has around 62,000 miles on it. I have had similar problems with a Chrysler product in the past, and as a result, I will never buy another Olds/GM or Chrysler product again. On the other hand, my Ford Ranger has over 100K miles and still runs great. All I have to do is check the oil and gas plugs.
D'angelo Kulas 2024-11-05
I have a 99 Cutlass GL that I mainly use for work. She's been a reliable companion with 47,000 miles on her and still running great. Other than standard maintenance like oil, lube, and filter changes, she's never had any down time. It's a shame that 99 was the last year for this car.
Toby Lowe 2024-10-29
The outside styling may not be the most exciting, but it still has a classic and timeless look. Inside, the car is cozy and comfortable, although the rear seat may feel a bit tight. While the suspension is on the stiffer side, it provides a sporty and responsive feel. The car may not be the most powerful, but it still offers a fun and enjoyable driving experience.
