Oldsmobile Alero 1999 problems
The Oldsmobile Alero is a midsize car that was produced by General Motors for its Oldsmobile division. Introduced in 1998 as a 1999 model, the Alero was the replacement for both the Achieva and Cutlass. The Alero was Oldsmobile's last new model nameplate, and — on April 29, 2004 — was also the last Oldsmobile manufactured.
History
The design of the Alero was originally previewed in 1997 with the Alero Alpha concept car, a V6-powered sport coupe that featured many design elements seen in the production Alero as well as some that were never meant for production. Its appearance was a revival of "coke bottle styling", popular during the 1960s and 1970s.
The Alero was sold either as a 4-door sedan or as a 2-door coupe. It shared its chassis and many parts, including engines, with the Pontiac Grand Am. All Aleros came in base GX, mid-level GL, or high-end GLS trim; the GL trim was split into three levels: 1, 2, and 3.
The Alero experienced minimal changes during its 5-year run. Most of these changes were either in choice of engines or options. In 2003, the Alero's daytime running lights were changed from high-beam to low-beam.
The Alero was also sold in select countries in Europe and in Israel between 1999 and 2001 as the Chevrolet Alero, and was only available as a sedan. The car still featured its Oldsmobile badges even though sold under the Chevrolet brand, but since most European consumers would not recognize the badging, Chevrolet badges were added to the grille and rear fascia for the 2000 model year. The Alero featured Chevrolet emblems throughout its entire run in Israel. The Alero was replaced in Europe, Israel, and Canada by the GM Daewoo-sourced Chevrolet Evanda/Epica.
The Alero's production ended with a special Final 500 Edition. These last 500 Aleros featured custom logos inspired by vintage Oldsmobile logos, dark cherry metallic paint, and a plate featuring the car's number out of 500. The final Alero Final 500 Edition (#500 of 500), a GLS 4-door, also happened to be the final Oldsmobile ever built, and was signed under its hood by the employees of the General Motors Lansing plant. The final car left the Lansing Assembly Plant on April 29, 2004 and was then given to the R.E. Olds Transportation Museum. On December 15, 2017, this car was sold at auction for $42,000 to a dealer in Florida.
A preview of the planned replacement for the Alero was seen in 2001 with the unveiling of the Oldsmobile O4 concept, designed by Bertone. The car was an open-top 4-seater with European styling featuring some Oldsmobile traits, and powered by the latest Ecotec I4 engine. The name had multiple meanings, including "Oldsmobile 4-Seater" as well as implying 2004 as a planned date for production.
However, the O4 concept was unveiled a few weeks after General Motors announced that they would be phasing out the Oldsmobile brand, meaning that production possibilities of the O4 would never be realized. Because of this, a second generation Alero was never built and the car was phased out with the Oldsmobile brand in 2004.

Oldsmobile Alero 1999 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the Oldsmobile Alero 1999.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.
- Manufacturer: DELPHI
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:PRESSURE RELIEF DEVICES
- Summary: CERTAIN DELPHI FUEL PRESSURE REGULATORS, P/NOS. FP10020-11B1, FP10026-11B1, AND FP10027-11B1, SOLD AFTER JANUARY 9, 2007, AS AFTERMARKET EQUIPMENT FOR VARIOUS PASSENGER VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. THE UNIVERSAL PRESSURE REGULATORS (UPR) WERE PRODUCED WITHOUT AN O'RING AND RETAINER.
- Consequence: FUEL MAY LEAK, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: DELPHI WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE UPR FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 23, 2007. OWNERS CAN CONTACT DELPHI AT 877-411-8770.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: STRUCTURE:BODY
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: THESE VEHICLES DO NOT COMPLY WITH THE OCCUPANT PROTECTION REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 201, "OCCUPANT PROTECTION IN INTERIOR IMPACT." THE CONSOLE COVER ON THESE VEHICLES DOES NOT STAY CLOSED WHEN A SPECIFIED VERTICAL LOAD IS APPLIED.
- Consequence: IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE CONSOLE COVER COULD OPEN AND THE COVER OR ITEMS STORED UNDER IT COULD INJURE AN OCCUPANT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CONSOLE LATCH MECHANISM.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: STEERING: STEERING WHEEL/HANDLE BAR
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE STEERING WHEEL CAN COME LOOSE FROM THE STEERING SHAFT BECAUSE THE STEERING WHEEL RETAINING NUT COULD HAVE BEEN IMPROPERLY TIGHTENED.
- Consequence: THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE A LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE STEERING WHEEL RETAINING NUT FOR CORRECT TIGHTNESS AND TIGHTEN IF NECESSARY.

Everything in this car has worked out really well. It runs great and I've never had any problems with it. Before I bought it, I heard that it wasn't a good car to have, but I love it. The look is great too. It's a nice car to have and I'm glad I bought it.

If you're in the market for a reliable, comfortable, good-looking, and decently priced car, the Olds Alero is definitely worth considering. I absolutely loved mine. Unfortunately, I was recently in an automobile accident where the car rolled. However, I can say with confidence that the Alero held up to my standards and kept me safe. If I had gone with a smaller car or a different brand, I don't believe I would have survived. Another car would have flattened in that situation. I am highly considering purchasing another Olds Alero. It looks good, drives well, and is a safe, sturdy vehicle.

I purchased my car brand new from the dealership and opted for the extended 60 month/60,000 mile warranty, which has proven to be a wise investment. The dealership has been very helpful in replacing the water pump and cruise control button, both of which were covered by the warranty. Unfortunately, the little piece of plastic behind the emergency flasher button on the dash broke after only a few uses, which seems to be a common issue according to the dealership. Although it was not initially covered by the warranty, the dealership did cover it once it started interfering with the turn signals. Additionally, the leather on my dash has started to bubble, likely due to the intense Southeast sun.

The V-6 engine is a joy to drive, with plenty of torque and a thrilling redline. It's a shame that it doesn't come with a 5-speed transmission, but the wide tires provide a firm feel. The suspension is soft, which may cause some sway in the corners, but it also helps less experienced drivers maintain control. The brakes could use an upgrade, but with performance brake pads, this car is a blast to drive. Overall, it's a really fun car that almost feels like a sports car.

The Alero is an amazing car! I have driven an incredible amount of miles per year and my Alero has held up beautifully. When I purchased the car, there were some slight issues with the rotors, but the dealer was quick to fix the problem before I even drove it off the lot. I only mention this because I have seen others mention rotor problems with this car on this site. However, I have driven 36000 miles since then and have not experienced any other issues. Overall, I highly recommend the Alero!

Paying over $18k for a car, one would expect a little better, but it's not bad. However, I did experience a lot of problems such as the lights on the rearview mirror not turning off, and the fan not working unless on high. Additionally, the rotors and brakes were shot at only 18k miles. Perhaps it was my fault for buying the first year model. Unfortunately, the resale value is very bad and it's almost like giving it away. If you're considering buying, I would recommend getting the V6 as it's the best thing about the car!

I purchased my '99 gl3 on September 29th, 2002. It was first brought to the shop on October 2nd, 2002. In the three months that I have owned it, there have been a few replacements and repairs, including the fuel pump and filter, coils #2 and #3, the battery and cable, plug wires, and the PCM has been reprogrammed. Additionally, all window trim, cowl and door vapor shield, dome light, seat belt retractor, window regulator, rear door handle, and driver mirror have been replaced. Unfortunately, the car still has some issues, such as sometimes not starting. It has been in the shop at least 10 times for that issue alone, and they are still unsure of the cause. Today is the last day of the warranty, and I found out that the previous owner also had some problems with the car, including starting issues, a faulty battery, oil leaks from the front of the engine, a leaking lower intake gasket, and rotor problems, among other things. There are too many issues to list!

Over the past 2 years, we have had to replace several parts in the car, including the brakes, tires, water pump, alternator, and belt. Unfortunately, there are still some issues with the car, such as the antilock brake/trac light going off once a week, the fan only working on the 3rd and 4th setting, and the cruise control button not working. We understand that this can be frustrating, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused. We recommend considering other options if you are in the market for a new car.

I am the third owner of my Alero, which I purchased from my parents in 2001. Unfortunately, they found it uncomfortable and difficult to get in and out of. Over the past eight years, I have had several issues with the car and have had to put a lot of money into it. I have lost count of how many wheel bearings I have had to replace, and I have also had to replace the engine, air conditioning unit, gas tank, alternator, starter, and more. Currently, the engine is knocking, the car makes a loud noise with the AC or heat on, and it needs a u-joint. Overall, it has been a high-maintenance car, and I would not recommend it.

Your car still looks great and runs well after four years, with only 24k miles driven, mostly short trips to work. You've only had to do minor corrective maintenance, such as adjusting the PS pump, turning the rotors, replacing one battery, fixing the driver's side power window motor, and repairing the rear door upholstery. It's surprising to hear about the problems reported by other owners on this website. The V-6 engine provides strong acceleration, the car handles well, and it's quiet and smooth. The driver visibility is excellent, and the car's exterior looks solid. Although the dash and door materials may seem cheap at a glance, the interior still looks fine overall.
