1998 Lexus Gs400 problems
The Lexus GS (Japanese: レクサス・GS, Rekusasu GS) is an executive car (E-segment in Europe) manufactured and marketed by Lexus across four generations — launched in 1991 as the Toyota Aristo in Japan and as the Lexus GS for markets outside the JDM beginning in February 1993. It continued with the Toyota Aristo name for the Japanese market until January 2005.
Lexus marketed the GS as a performance sedan competing in the mid-luxury class, between its compact executive IS and large/flagship LS. The GS shared its chassis with one of Toyota's longest-running nameplates, the Toyota Crown premium sedans until 2011.
The GS featured six-cylinder engines and rear-wheel drive, with a V8 engines offered forall generations, and all-wheel drive and hybrid versions debuted in 2005. Previously, all-wheel drive versions were already made available in the Japanese-market S140 series Aristo. The first two generations had a Japanese domestic market equivalent, the Toyota Aristo (aristo is Greek for "the best"), which was sold from 1991 until the Lexus marque's domestic debut in 2005. Though largely identical in exterior and interior design, the GS and the Aristo differed in their engine and transmission combinations as well as equipment packages. The GS name stands for Grand Sedan. However, some Lexus importers use the backronymic name, Grand Sport.
The first generation Lexus GS began sales in the United States, Europe and selected Asian markets in 1993. It was originally introduced with an inline-six engine and exterior bodywork designed by Italdesign Giugiaro. The second generation model premiered in 1997, using a new platform, in-house styling, and adding a V8 version for the first time outside Japan. The third generation GS, which premiered globally for the 2006 model year, was produced in V6, V8, and hybrid versions, the latter known as the GS 450h. The third generation models were the first GS sedans to be badged as such in the Japanese domestic market.
The fourth generation Lexus GS premiered in August 2011 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, where models introduced included the V6-powered GS 350, hybrid GS 450h, and performance-tuned F Sport variants. A lower-displacement V6 model, the GS 250, premiered at the Auto Guangzhou Exhibition in November 2011, targeted at Asian and European markets. In some markets such as North America and Asia, the GS shares the mid-size sedan category in the Lexus lineup with the front-wheel drive ES, serving as its rear-wheel-drive counterpart.
The GS was replaced in Europe by the Lexus ES from December 2018. The seventh generation ES is the first to be sold in Europe, replacing the GS in spite of being a front-wheel drive car. It went on sale from September 2018 in Russia, Turkey and other CIS markets and from December 2018 in Western and Central Europe. Production ended in August 2020.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-06-01
- VIN: JT8BH68X7W0
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: LEXUS STUCK PEDAL--I DRIVE A 1998 LEXUS GS400 WHICH I BOUGHT NEW. WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT IT, I'D PRESSED THE PEDAL ALL THE WAY DOWN("FLOORED IT") MANY TIMES AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE. HOWEVER IN MORE RECENT YEARS, I RARELY "FLOORED IT" . ONE TIME LAST SUMMER, I PUSHED THE PEDAL ALL THE WAY DOWN TO PASS A CAR AND THE PEDAL STUCK. MY CAR ACCELERATED FROM 35MPH TO 70MPH IN A MATTER OF SECONDS ON A LOCAL ROAD. I HIT THE BRAKES SEVERAL TIMES BUT IT KEPT SPEEDING UP. I WAS ABLE TO PRY UP THE PEDAL UP WITH MY TOE AVERTING A NEAR-ACCIDENT. THIS WAS BEFORE ALL OF THE NEWS WITH TOYOTA'S SUDDEN ACCELERATION CAME TO LIGHT. I DIDN'T TAKE THE CAR INTO THE LOCAL LEXUS SHOP BECAUSE, THEY CHARGE AT LEAST $2000 EVERYTIME I TAKE IT IN. I DROVE THE CAR FOR ANOTHER YEAR BUT MADE SURE NOT TO PRESS THE PEDAL ALL THE WAY DOWN. HOWEVER, I AM INTENDING ON TRADING IN THE CAR NOW AND I WANT TO MAKE SURE THE DEFECT IS FIXED BECAUSE ANY FUTURE OWNERS OF THIS CAR WILL NOT BE AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND IT IS A POTENTIAL HAZARD WAITING TO HAPPEN. I WANTED TO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE GOVERNMENT BEFORE TAKING IT IN BECAUSE (A) I WANT THE GOVERNMENT TO BE AWARE THAT LEXUS(NOT JUST TOYOTAS) HAS THIS PROBLEM OF STUCK PEDAL/ACCELERATION (B) IN CASE THE GOV WANTED TO CONDUCT ANY INVESTIGATION WITH MY VEHICLE REGARDING THE STUCK PEDAL FOR EVIDENCE OR RESEARCH BEFORE LEXUS DOES ANYTHING WITH IT(IT DID NOT INVOLVE A FLOORMAT-THE PEDAL JUST STUCK AND DIDN'T COME BACK UP AFTER I RELEASED MY FOOT) (C) COMPEL LEXUS TO FIX THE PROBLEM FOR FREE BECAUSE IT IS A SAFETY DEFECT BEFORE SELLING IT TO A FUTURE OWNER. I FEEL THIS IT IS IMPORTANT FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO DO EXTENSIVE RESEARCH REGARDING THIS MATTER. LEXUS HAS MANAGED TO STAY OUT OF TOYOTA'S RECENT CULPABILITY ISSUES, BUT CERTAINLY MY LEXUS HAD THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM. YOU MAY ALSO WANT ENGINEERS TO EXAMINE MY PEDAL FOR MORE RESEARCH OR EVEN EVIDENCE AS TO WHY THIS OCCURS IN LEXUS/ TOYOTA VEHICLES. *TR

ON YOUR TB PAGE I FOUND OUT THAT THE VSC( COMPUTER WAS DEFECTIVE IN THE JAPANEASE MARKET BEFORE JANUARY. A NON-COMPLIANCE FIX PLAN TO NHTSA IN MARCH. I ALSO FOUND THE DOCUMENT THAT STATES "TOYOTA WAS TO FAULT FOR THE BAD YAW CONTROL" AND THAT THEY PLANNED TO FIX THE COMPUTERS CAUSE THEY MIGHT CAUSE THE DRIVER TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. AT NO TIME DURING THE RECALL PROCESS WAS I EVER AWARE OF THE DEFECTIVE PART. AS A COL I MAKE MANY TRIPS ON FORT HOOD TEXAS WHICH HAS OVER 37,000 RADONS OF WHICH 8,000 ARE IN USE EVERY DAY. MOST OF THE RADIOS ARE SINGARS (FREQUENCY HOPPERS). ON AT LEAST 6 OR MORE TIME THE VSC YELLOW LIGHT CAME ON TURING THE SYSTEM OFF AND THEN IT WOULD COME BACK ON. IN THE AERA I LIVE IN, GARAGE DOORS AND CLOCKS, TV'S ARE SUBJECT TO COME ON BECAUSE OF MILITARY RADIOS. I HAD FULL CONFIDENCE IN LEXUS ABOUT BEING SAFE. I THINK THEY WERE MISSREPRESENTING AND NEGLEGNCE IN NOT TELLING ME.

Coming out of a 2003 Mitsubishi Diamante and taking a step back into a 1998 Lexus GS400 was tough at first, but now I have greater reliability and a higher resale value.

I had an LS400 and currently own an LX470, so it's safe to say that I'm sold on the Lexus brand. Recently, my neighbor purchased a 740i and I couldn't help but feel a bit envious of the 288 HP engine. However, I ended up buying a used GS400 with only 62K miles on it. After spending about 1.5K on routine maintenance, including the 60K service, I can confidently say that this car is a dream to drive! It's incredibly fast and handles like a dream. I would definitely recommend keeping the BMW, but this Lexus is definitely a ride worth considering!

I bought this car from a friend when it had 90,000 miles on it. Now, it has 125,000 miles and I am happy to report that nothing has gone wrong with it. The car looks great both inside and out and it just keeps going and going. Although it's getting old, I am not planning to sell it anytime soon because it runs perfectly.
