The Lincoln Town Car is a model line of full-size luxury sedans that was marketed by the Lincoln division of the American automaker Ford Motor Company. Deriving its name from a limousine body style, Lincoln marketed the Town Car from 1981 to 2011, with the nameplate previously serving as the flagship trim of the Lincoln Continental. Produced across three generations for thirty model years, the Town Car was marketed directly against luxury sedans from Cadillac and Chrysler.

Marketed nearly exclusively as a four-door sedan (a two-door sedan was offered for 1981 only), many examples of the Town Car were used for fleet and livery (limousine) service. From 1983 to its 2011 discontinuation, the Town Car was the longest car produced by Ford worldwide, becoming the longest mass-production car sold in North America from 1997 to 2011. While not a direct successor of the Town Car, the Lincoln MKS would become the longest American sedan until 2016 (overtaken by the Cadillac CT6).

From 1980 until 2007, the Lincoln Town Car was assembled in Wixom, Michigan, (Wixom Assembly) alongside the Lincoln Continental, LS, and Mark VI, VII, and VIII. After Wixom's closure, Town Car production moved to Southwold, Ontario, (St. Thomas Assembly) alongside the similar Ford Crown Victoria and the Mercury Grand Marquis. The final Lincoln Town Car was produced on August 29, 2011.

Within the Lincoln model line, the Town Car was not directly replaced; the nameplate was used from 2012 to 2019 to denote livery/limousine/hearse variants of the Lincoln MKT. For 2017, the revived Continental replaced the MKS, closely matching the Town Car in wheelbase and width.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-04-17
  • VIN: 2LNHM82VX8X
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: IN 2008, I PURCHASED A NEW LINCOLN TOWN CAR. THE TIRES ON THE CAR ARE MICHELIN ENERGY LX4 XSE RADIALS. THE DOT NUMBER IS M3XHDEH3X0208. TREAD WEAR IS SHOWN AS 500. TIRE SIZE IS P225/60R17. MY COMPLAINT IS THAT ALL 4 TIRES SHOW SIDEWALL CRACKING. THE CAR HAS 23,000 MILES ON IT. TREAD WEAR LOOKS TO BE ABOUT HALF OF NEW. THE SIDEWALL CRACKING IS EXTENSIVE, AND I BELIEVE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, ESPECIALLY IN WEST CENTRAL FLORIDA, WHERE I LIVE, BECAUSE OF THE HIGH AMBIENT DAYTIME TEMPERATURES. I HAVE GOOGLED THE TIRE 'MICHELIN ENERGY LX4' AND HAVE FOUND THAT THERE ARE MANY CONSUMER SAME MODEL MICHELIN TIRE COMPLAINTS FOR SIDE WALL CRACKING. DEALERS REPRESENTING THE MICHELIN BRAND, UPON INSPECTING THE PROBLEMATIC TIRES HAVE DETERMINED THE PROBLEM DUE TO 'TIRE ROT.' I BELIEVE WHOLEHEARTEDLY THAT THIS ISSUE DEMANDS IMMEDIATE INVESTIGATION, BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED, DUE TO A SIDEWALL BLOWOUT. *TR

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-06-29
  • VIN: 2LNHM82W48X
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: WE HAD A SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION OF OUR CAR. WE WERE TRAVELING WEST ON THE NEW YORK STATE THRUWAY (I-90) TOWARDS NIAGARA FALLS. AS WE EXITED INTO A REST AREA, SUDDENLY THE ENGINE RACED AS IF THE GAS PEDAL WERE FLOORED. THE DRIVER PRESSED ON THE BRAKE VERY VERY HARD, AND THE CAR ALMOST STOPPED, MOVING FORWARD SLOWLY. THE DRIVER THEN SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL, AND THE ENGINE SLOWEDAND WE STOPPED--ABOUT 50 FEET BEYOND WHERE THE SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION STARTED. WE TURNED THE ENGINE OFF, AND EXAMINED THE FLOORMAT--IT WAS NOT IN A POSITION TO PRESS THE GAS PEDAL. WE CHECKED UNDER THE HOOD, AND DID NOT FIND ANYTHING THAT SEEMED RELATED TO CAUSING THE SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. WE LATER CHECKED IF THE DRIVER COULD PRESS THE GAS AND BRAKE PEDALS AT THE SAME TIME, BUT ON OUR CAR THEY ARE SO FAR APART THAT THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE. WE THINK IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THIS OCCURRENCE WAS DUE TO INADEQUATE SHIELDING, AND INADEQUATE PROGRAMMING, OF THE GAS PEDAL COMPUTER WHICH SENDS SIGNALS TO THE ACCELERATION SYSTEM. AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT, WE HAD A GPS, CELL PHONES, AND GAME MACHINES IN OPERATION, AND THE REST AREA WE WERE PULLING INTO HAD WIFI. THUS, THE ACCELERATION SYSTEM COMPUTER WAS RECEIVING MANY SIGNALS FROM "NOISE." IF THEY CAME IN A CERTAIN SEQUENCE, IT WOULD CAUSE AN SUA, UNLESS THE CAR HAD ADEQUATE CODING TO PREVENT THAT OCCURRENCE. THE FIX FOR THIS WOULD BE TO EITHER HARD WIRE THE GAS PEDAL, OR TO PUT ADEQUATE PROGRAMMING TO PREVENT STRAY SIGNALS FROM BEING ACCEPTED. WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE ONE OF THESE FIXES IMPLEMENTED. *TR

Negative 2008 Lincoln Town car car reviews

  1. Mathias Goyette 2024-03-18

I was driving the Lincoln Towncar and unfortunately, it wasn't what I expected. During the drive, my dentures were rattling, which was quite uncomfortable. Additionally, after a long trip, I felt like someone had been jumping on my lower back for hours.

  2. Deven Cummerata 2024-01-20

I purchased a used 2008 car in 2011 with 33,000 miles. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with Napleton in West Palm, but after reaching out to the corporate and Lincoln corp., the situation improved. Now, in July 2015, I am facing a big bill at the Ford/Lincoln dealership for necessary repairs. The fuel gauge, fuel pump, fuel lines, battery, and A/C fan all need to be replaced, costing more than $2000. Despite the unexpected expenses, we still love the car. We always brought the car in for check-ups, and everything seemed fine. However, problems started right after we started getting gas at Costco. I am wondering if there is a connection here?

  3. Clair Rosenbaum 2024-01-13

Since I bought the car, I've put about 5000 miles on it. The next day, I noticed that it would periodically hesitate or jerk when cruising at almost any speed. Although subtle, I drove it on some smooth roads and continued to notice the jerking. I've taken it to the dealer three times, but unfortunately, they still cannot figure out what is wrong. The shop foreman and a mechanic rode with me twice and they both felt what I was telling them. I think it might be a computer flaw that the average driver does not feel, but Ford is telling them that it is a nuance of how the car drives. I appreciate their efforts and hope that we can find a solution soon.

  2. Tyrell Bailey 2024-11-15

Just bought the Signature series TownCar. It's an absolute dream - inside and out. Although gas prices have gone through the roof, I'm pleased to see that I'm getting 20 miles per gallon - mostly city driving. The car is very comfortable, with great features and all-around visibility.

  3. Jordyn Quigley 2024-11-11

After 50 years of owning autos, I have found this Town Car to be the best! It's comfortable, reliable, gets 30 mpg on the highway, and has no wind noise. Plus, it's easy to drive and has convenient features like auto trunk, auto headlights, and wipers. It's definitely worth the money!

  4. Humberto Mitchell 2024-11-06

I am a 41 year old guy who has owned 18 town cars since the age of twenty. I strayed a couple times to a 430S Class Mercedes and a 530I BMW. The maintenance every 7000 miles was high and the ride in both was rough and caused lower back pain. This Town car like all the other are super smooth and average 22mpg. I can drive to Naples Florida and get out of the car and feel rested rather than feeling stress. From the Country Club to the store I never feel out of place. I'm sold on Lincoln Town car 2008.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my Designer Series Town Car. I purchased it with only 7000 miles on it and it has been an absolute pleasure to drive. The ride is so smooth and civilized, and the seats, gauges, and controls are all top-notch. I've owned it for two years now and have never had to take it to the dealer for repairs - not even once! Plus, the gas mileage is great - I get 25mph or better on the highway and 21mph in town. While it may not be a sports car, it certainly lives up to its luxury car status and behaves accordingly. Thanks for listening!
