The Nissan Violet is a model of car that appeared in Japan in 1973, and was exclusive to Japanese Nissan dealerships called Nissan Cherry Store as a larger companion to the Nissan Cherry.

In 1977 the second generation arrived. This was split into two additional lines, the Nissan Auster and the Nissan Stanza. All three models bore the A10 series identifier, and were built in Japan at the Hiratsuka and Yokosuka assembly plants. The Stanza was exclusive to Japanese Nissan dealerships called Nissan Satio Store as a larger companion to the smaller Nissan Sunny, and the Auster triplet was exclusive to Nissan Prince Store locations as a larger companion to the Nissan Langley.

A new third generation front-wheel drive model was launched in 1981, changing the series name again to T11, and sharing its platform with the Compact MPV Nissan Prairie/Multi/Stanza Wagon. Final versions were Nissan Bluebirds series U12 rebadged for some international markets. In most export markets the car was originally sold as the Datsun 140J or 160J depending on the engine; this name was then gradually changed to Nissan Stanza in most markets in line with Nissan's phasing out of the Datsun brand in its export markets in the early 1980s; in Europe for instance it was sold as the "Datsun-Nissan Stanza" for a short time until the Datsun name was dropped completely in 1984.

The Stanza/Auster/Violet were discontinued in 1992. The Stanza was replaced by the Nissan Altima in North America; the Stanza was replaced by the Nissan Bluebird in Japan, and by the Primera in Europe.

Common 1992 Nissan Stanza problems

The Nissan Stanza, produced from 1987 to 1992, is known for several common problems that owners have reported. These issues are primarily related to the engine, transmission, suspension, and brakes.

Engine Issues: Many 1989-1992 Nissan Stanza owners reported issues with their car's engine, particularly with the timing chain. Symptoms of a faulty timing chain include a rattling noise coming from the engine, reduced power and acceleration, and difficulty starting the engine. To address this issue, it is recommended that owners regularly maintain their car's engine and replace the timing chain as necessary.

Transmission Issues: Another common issue experienced by 1989-1992 Nissan Stanza owners is problems with the car's automatic transmission. Symptoms of a faulty transmission include slipping gears, difficulty shifting gears, and delayed shifting. To address this issue, it is recommended that owners have their transmission inspected and repaired or replaced as necessary.

Suspension Issues: Some 1989-1992 Nissan Stanza owners have reported issues with their car's suspension, particularly with the rear struts. Symptoms of faulty struts include excessive bouncing or swaying while driving, as well as uneven tire wear. To address this issue, it is recommended that owners have their rear struts inspected and replaced as necessary. Other suspension components, such as bushings and ball joints, should also be inspected and replaced as necessary.

Brake Issues: Finally, some 1989-1992 Nissan Stanza owners have reported issues with their car's brakes. Symptoms of faulty brakes include a soft or spongy brake pedal, reduced braking power, and noisy brakes. To address this issue, it is recommended that owners regularly maintain their car's brakes and replace any worn brake components as necessary.

For the 1990 Nissan Stanza specifically, there are additional common issues that have been reported. These include automatic transmission shifting problems, engine oil leaks, electrical issues, and power steering system problems. Transmission shifting issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn or damaged transmission components. Engine oil leaks are often caused by worn or damaged gaskets or seals. Electrical issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn or damaged wiring or electrical components. Power steering system issues can be caused by worn or damaged power steering components, such as the pump or hoses.

In summary, the Nissan Stanza, particularly the 1989-1992 models, is known for several common issues related to the engine, transmission, suspension, and brakes. Regular maintenance and prompt repairs can help address these issues and ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle. SINCE INTERNAL TIMING CHAINS USUALLY LAST THE USEFUL LIFE OF AN ENGINE, ABOUT 120-140K MILES, THIS WAS VERY PREMATURE. Negative 1992 Nissan Stanza car reviews

  1. Albert Bogisich 2024-11-05

This vehicle may not be the best option for long-term use. However, it is a suitable car for driving around town. During our 10 years of ownership, we have had to replace 5 alternators and several electrical window lift switches. We have also had to have rust removal work done on the rear quarter panels. It is worth noting that on the highway, the car tends to be loud, and the front seats may be uncomfortable for taller people on long trips. Despite these issues, we believe that this car is a reliable option for short trips and daily use.

  2. Ronny Moore 2024-01-16

The Stanza is an enjoyable car to drive, with the 2.4L engine providing ample power. While the handling is average, the comfort and fit and finish are also satisfactory. Unfortunately, the reliability of this Nissan model is subpar, as evidenced by my personal experience of spending $4,000 on repairs in just one year.

Positive 1992 Nissan Stanza car reviews

  1. Norris Balistreri 2025-01-04

I absolutely love my car! It has a fast 2.4L engine and even with over 230,000 miles on it, I've been offered to sell it multiple times. People are starting to catch on to what's under the Stanza's hood! Despite her unassuming looks, she's a real gas saver too. Over the 6 years that I've owned her, I've had to do some maintenance (alternator, plug wires, distributor and cap, starter, rack pinion, outer tie rods, and electrical window switch on driver's side), but the best part is that I don't have a car payment! I trust this car and will definitely buy another Nissan. Oh, and I just changed the rack pinion and outer tie rods for $700 this past weekend...it was well worth it because I've never had a car drive so straight!

  2. Dwight Spencer 2024-11-08

I bought my stanza brand new off the showroom floor. 14 years & 216,000 miles later, this car is still running strong. I replaced the clutch at 207,000 miles, and aside from that, I've not had to perform any repairs. Nissan offers reliable products, better styling, and most of all affordability. It's great to see a car that can last this long and still be in such good condition!

  3. Osvaldo Bartell 2024-11-06

I bought mine with 96k miles on it. I've had to replace a few worn out items like the starter, alternator, and water pump, but nothing too major. I make sure to change the oil and filters regularly. It's been really reliable, even in cold winter weather. And now, it's still going strong at 226k miles. It's a great car!

  4. Kamren Abshire 2024-10-13

I had a 1992 XE model for about 4 years, it was my college car. Although it had its fair share of issues, I have to admit that I enjoyed driving it super fast and getting speeding tickets right and left. Despite the fact that it eventually caught fire from the distributor cap and part of the hood burned, and then the timing chain went and it was scrap, I still have fond memories of it. Even before the big events, the car required a lot of maintenance, but boy, did I enjoy that car while it lasted!

  5. Dewayne Cummerata 2024-09-27

This car has over 201,000 miles, and had very few problems until very recently like the water pump, radiator, and the o-ring on the distributor shaft. Over 16 years, these plastic and rubber parts have become brittle and need to be replaced. But overall, the car's reliability has been remarkable. After some cleaning and servicing, it runs quite smoothly, just as it did when it was new.
