Nissan Stanza problems

The Nissan Violet is a model of car that appeared in Japan in 1973, and was exclusive to Japanese Nissan dealerships called Nissan Cherry Store as a larger companion to the Nissan Cherry.

In 1977 the second generation arrived. This was split into two additional lines, the Nissan Auster and the Nissan Stanza. All three models bore the A10 series identifier, and were built in Japan at the Hiratsuka and Yokosuka assembly plants. The Stanza was exclusive to Japanese Nissan dealerships called Nissan Satio Store as a larger companion to the smaller Nissan Sunny, and the Auster triplet was exclusive to Nissan Prince Store locations as a larger companion to the Nissan Langley.

A new third generation front-wheel drive model was launched in 1981, changing the series name again to T11, and sharing its platform with the Compact MPV Nissan Prairie/Multi/Stanza Wagon. Final versions were Nissan Bluebirds series U12 rebadged for some international markets. In most export markets the car was originally sold as the Datsun 140J or 160J depending on the engine; this name was then gradually changed to Nissan Stanza in most markets in line with Nissan's phasing out of the Datsun brand in its export markets in the early 1980s; in Europe for instance it was sold as the "Datsun-Nissan Stanza" for a short time until the Datsun name was dropped completely in 1984.

The Stanza/Auster/Violet were discontinued in 1992. The Stanza was replaced by the Nissan Altima in North America; the Stanza was replaced by the Nissan Bluebird in Japan, and by the Primera in Europe.

Common Nissan Stanza problems

The Nissan Stanza, a compact car produced by Nissan from 1977 to 1992, has been known for several common problems that have been reported by its owners.

  • Clogged Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Passages: The most common problem reported with the Nissan Stanza is clogged EGR passages in the intake manifold, which can result in a rough idle or stalling. This issue is caused by the buildup of carbon deposits over time, which restricts the flow of exhaust gases and can lead to a decrease in engine performance. To address this problem, the EGR passages need to be cleaned or replaced, which can be a costly repair.
  • Rust Issues: Rust is a common problem with older Nissan Stanza models, particularly those that have been driven in areas with harsh winter conditions or high salt content in the air. Rust can affect the body of the car, leading to structural issues and decreased value. In severe cases, rust can also affect the frame and undercarriage of the car, leading to safety concerns.
  • Oil Leaks: Another common problem reported by Nissan Stanza owners is oil leaks, which can be caused by worn or damaged gaskets, seals, or other components of the engine. Oil leaks can lead to decreased engine performance, increased wear and tear on engine components, and the need for frequent oil changes.
  • Transmission Issues: Transmission problems are also common in the Nissan Stanza, particularly in older models. These issues can include slipping, grinding, or difficulty shifting, and can be caused by worn or damaged transmission components. In severe cases, transmission failure can occur, which can be a costly repair.
  • Electrical Issues: Electrical problems are also common in the Nissan Stanza, particularly in older models. These issues can include blown fuses, malfunctioning lights, and other electrical components. Electrical problems can be caused by worn or damaged wiring, faulty switches, or other electrical components.
  • Suspension and Steering Issues: Suspension and steering problems are also common in the Nissan Stanza, particularly in older models. These issues can include worn or damaged suspension components, such as bushings, struts, or tie rods, which can lead to decreased ride quality and handling.
  • Heating and Cooling Issues: Heating and cooling problems are also common in the Nissan Stanza, particularly in older models. These issues can include a malfunctioning heater core, a faulty thermostat, or a leaking radiator. Heating and cooling problems can lead to decreased comfort and can also affect the overall performance of the car.
  • Braking Issues: Brake problems are also common in the Nissan Stanza, particularly in older models. These issues can include worn or damaged brake pads, rotors, or drums, which can lead to decreased stopping power and increased wear and tear on brake components.

In summary, the Nissan Stanza has several common problems that have been reported by its owners, including clogged EGR passages, rust issues, oil leaks, transmission issues, electrical problems, suspension and steering issues, heating and cooling issues, and braking issues. These problems can be costly to repair and can affect the overall performance and value of the car.

  • Summary: FUEL INJECTORS ARE LEAKING GAS FROM THE INJECTOR SEALS. MY BROTHER OWNS A GEO PRIZM WITH A TOYOTA MOTOR IN IT WITH ALMOST 300,000 MILES ON IT AND HAS NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM EVER. MY NISSAN STANZA ONLY HAS 133,000 ON IT AND I HAVE SEEN COMPLAINTS ON WEB FORUMS ABOUT 240SX WITH SAME KA24E SOHC MOTOR HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH LESS MILEAGE ON THEM. THEY SWITCHED TO THE KA24DE DOHC ENGINE IN LATER YEAR STANZA'S. I THINK THEY ALSO DID SO ON THE 240SX TOO, BUT NOT SURE WHICH YEARS THIS HAPPENED. I KNOW THE STANZA USED KA24E MOTOR FROM 1990 TO 1992 PRODUCTION YEARS AND THEN SWITCHED TO THE KA24DE AFTER WHICH COULD POSSIBLY HAVE DIFFERENT INJECTOR SETUP THEN THE KA24E WHICH IS WHAT I HAVE. *JB

Latest negative Nissan Stanza car reviews

  1. Albert Bogisich 2024-11-05

    Vehicle year: 1992

This vehicle may not be the best option for long-term use. However, it is a suitable car for driving around town. During our 10 years of ownership, we have had to replace 5 alternators and several electrical window lift switches. We have also had to have rust removal work done on the rear quarter panels. It is worth noting that on the highway, the car tends to be loud, and the front seats may be uncomfortable for taller people on long trips. Despite these issues, we believe that this car is a reliable option for short trips and daily use.

  2. Boyd Goyette 2024-06-19

    Vehicle year: 1991

When I bought it, the car had 70K miles on it. The previous owner kept it in great shape, and I didn't have to invest much into it. But the darn car just keeps going! I recently sold it for $800 at 135K miles. It really is a great car!

  3. Steve Schmidt 2024-04-08

    Vehicle year: 1990

The Stanza is an enjoyable car to drive, with the 2.4L engine providing ample power. While the handling is average, the comfort and fit and finish are also satisfactory. Unfortunately, the reliability of this Nissan model is subpar, as evidenced by my personal experience of spending $4,000 on repairs in just one year.

  4. Florencio Jacobi 2024-04-03

    Vehicle year: 1990

I bought this car in 2000 when I was a freshman in college for $1400. Little did I know i would have to spend about another $700 to get it in shape. The problems have been minimal and parts have pretty reasonable prices. Although it is a 4 cylinder, it performs very well and gets average gas milage. It has a sporty feel and easily passes any Accord or Camry of its age. Passenger room is nice up front, yet tight in the rear. The Stanza offers everything it rivals do, only more power and a smaller price.

    Vehicle year: 1992

I bought my stanza brand new off the showroom floor. 14 years & 216,000 miles later, this car is still running strong. I replaced the clutch at 207,000 miles, and aside from that, I've not had to perform any repairs. Nissan offers reliable products, better styling, and most of all affordability. It's great to see a car that can last this long and still be in such good condition!

  2. Osvaldo Bartell 2024-11-06

    Vehicle year: 1992

I bought mine with 96k miles on it. I've had to replace a few worn out items like the starter, alternator, and water pump, but nothing too major. I make sure to change the oil and filters regularly. It's been really reliable, even in cold winter weather. And now, it's still going strong at 226k miles. It's a great car!

  3. Pietro Morissette 2024-10-28

    Vehicle year: 1991

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my '91 Stanza. I bought it from a friend 5 years ago when it was already 9 years old, but it has been an incredibly reliable car. I've only had to do a few repairs, like fixing a rocker arm for $100 and replacing the battery and brake pads. However, I recently decided to sell it because there was a strong raw gas fume/exhaust smell that two mechanics couldn't figure out. I think the CV joints rusted out because I stopped taking the car to the car wash, but that's just my guess. Living by the ocean in a heavy snowfall/road salt area can be tough on cars! Despite these issues, I still think it's a wicked good car.

  4. Kamren Abshire 2024-10-13

    Vehicle year: 1992

I had a 1992 XE model for about 4 years, it was my college car. Although it had its fair share of issues, I have to admit that I enjoyed driving it super fast and getting speeding tickets right and left. Despite the fact that it eventually caught fire from the distributor cap and part of the hood burned, and then the timing chain went and it was scrap, I still have fond memories of it. Even before the big events, the car required a lot of maintenance, but boy, did I enjoy that car while it lasted!

  5. Dewayne Cummerata 2024-09-27

    Vehicle year: 1992

This car has over 201,000 miles, and had very few problems until very recently like the water pump, radiator, and the o-ring on the distributor shaft. Over 16 years, these plastic and rubber parts have become brittle and need to be replaced. But overall, the car's reliability has been remarkable. After some cleaning and servicing, it runs quite smoothly, just as it did when it was new.
