2010 Audi A8 problems

audi logo

The Audi A8 is a full-size luxury sedan manufactured and marketed by the German automaker Audi since 1994. Succeeding the Audi V8, and now in its fourth generation, the A8 has been offered with both front- or permanent all-wheel drive—and in short- and long-wheelbase variants. The first two generations employed the Volkswagen Group D platform, with the current generation deriving from the MLB platform. After the original model's 1994 release, Audi released the second generation in late 2002, the third in late 2009, and the fourth and current iteration in 2017. Noted as the first mass-market car with an aluminium chassis, all A8 models have used this construction method co-developed with Alcoa and marketed as the Audi Space Frame.

A mechanically upgraded, high-performance version of the A8 debuted in 1996 as the Audi S8. Produced exclusively at Audi's Neckarsulm plant, the S8 is fitted standard with Audi's quattro all-wheel drive system. The S8 was only offered with a short-wheelbase for the first three generations, being joined by a long-wheelbase variant for the fourth generation.

D2 (Typ 4D; 1994–2002)

Development

In 1982, Ferdinand Piëch signed an agreement with Aluminum Company of America. The objective was to design and develop a car that would be substantially lighter than any other vehicles in its class (to compensate for the fact that standard all-wheel drive was around 100 kg (220 lb) heavier than competitors' rear-wheel drive). In the late 1980s, it was decided that the target vehicle would be a successor to the V8 (Typ 4C) flagship introduced in 1988. By 1990, a final design by Chris Bird and Dirk van Braeckel was chosen and frozen for series production in mid-1991. In September 1993, the Audi Space Frame (ASF) Concept was unveiled at the 1993 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) as a D2 Typ 4D prototype in polished aluminum. Pilot production began in December 1993 and development ended in early 1994, at a total cost of $700 million (£418.1 million).

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-04-12
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6) MY COMPLAINT COVERS ALL RADAR BASED BLIND SPOT MONITORING DEVICES. THE FOLLOWING SCENARIO HAS PERSONALLY OCCURRED TO ME TWICE WITHIN THE LAST MONTH. I WAS ONE IN A LINE OF VEHICLES DRIVING ON A CLEAR HIGHWAY WHEN AN AUDI WITH BLIND SPOT MONITORING ENTERED THE HIGHWAY DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE LINE OF VEHICLES. BECAUSE OF THE LOW POWER OF ITS BLIND SPOT MONITORING SYSTEM'S RADAR COUPLED WITH THE EFFECTS OF THE INVERSE SQUARE LAW OF PHYSICS, THE RADAR DETECTOR EQUIPPED DRIVER CLOSEST TO THE AUDI THOUGHT THEY WERE BEING MONITORED BY INSTANT ON POLICE RADAR AND JAMMED ON THEIR BRAKES, CAUSING PANIC STOPPING BY ALL OF THE VEHICLES BEHIND THEM. MYSELF AND SEVERAL OTHER VEHICLES WERE REQUIRED TO USE THE ROAD'S SHOULDER TO AVOID BEING REAR-ENDED. I FEEL FAIRLY CONFIDENT THAT WITHIN THE US THERE HAVE BEEN ACCIDENTS CAUSED BY THESE DEVICES, YET THE ACCIDENT WILL NEVER BE ATTRIBUTED TO THE DEVICE BECAUSE THE DRIVER WITH THE BLIND SPOT MONITORING DEVICE WILL BE OBLIVIOUS TO THE CHAOS THEY CAUSED BEHIND THEM, AND THEY'LL IGNORANTLY CONTINUE DRIVING. THESE DEVICES SHOULD IMMEDIATELY BE DISABLED, AND ANYONE THAT THINKS THESE ARE A GOOD IDEA SHOULD BE REMINDED THAT THEY SHOULD TURN THEIR HEAD AND LOOK OVER THEIR SHOULDER BEFORE MERGING ONTO A HIGHWAY, OR CHANGING LANES. LET'S PROMOTE SMARTER, MORE AWARE DRIVERS, AND NOT SMARTER CARS. [XXX] *TR

Negative 2010 Audi A8 car reviews

  1. Edd McGlynn 2024-11-09

I have replaced an identical 06 with this vehicle. However, I am experiencing issues with the engine management of the new car. The car idles roughly, hesitates upon acceleration, and downshifts with unexpected surges.

  2. Micah O'Keefe 2024-01-25

This car has consistently demonstrated reliability issues every time I take it on the road. As someone who has owned many cars, I can confidently say that this is one of the least reliable vehicles I have ever encountered.

  3. Flavio Renner 2024-01-07

Hi there! I noticed that the MPG advertised for city driving was 19, but now that I've driven 2000 miles, I'm only getting 10-12 MPG. I'm feeling a bit frustrated about this and wondering if VW may have done the same thing with emissions. What do you think?

Positive 2010 Audi A8 car reviews

  1. Tyrese Lebsack 2025-03-14

Thanks for sharing your review on your 2007 Audi A8L! It sounds like you've taken great care of it and it's still driving like a dream at 130,000 miles. I appreciate the tip about cleaning the intakes to improve MPG. It's good to know that the front air suspensions can be rebuilt at a reasonable cost. It's great to hear that the Audi A8 is the most comfortable car you've owned, with plenty of leg room and heated seats to keep everyone cozy. Thanks again for sharing your experience! One issue with this car is that it is designed for two people in the back, rather than three, as the middle back seat is not comfortable. However, behind the wheel, the car feels more like a smaller car than a land yacht, making it the ultimate cruiser. I typically average around 90 MPH, but the car is so smooth that it doesn't feel like you're going that fast. The Audi A8 comes with many standard features, such as power folding mirrors, a power trunk, soft-closing doors, and a rear power sunshade, as well as manual side shades. I opted for the optional solar panel sunroof, which keeps the car cool during the summer by kicking on the air in the cabin. So far, I have had no issues with any of the mentioned items, except that the power trunk has gotten a little weak. Now, let's talk about the Quattro system. Audi has a reputation for AWD, and this vehicle lives up to that reputation. I have taken it up to the snow in the Sierra and taken sharp corners in the dry, and I can say that this car definitely turns into a sport sedan and grips the roads to such an extent that I don't know why people buy BMWs. Snow is no problem for this car. The steering of the A8 is extremely responsive, and the engine puts out the exact power that the driver needs, depending on how much power is applied to the gas. The 4.2 has enough power to pass other vehicles, and with the air suspension, it can have enough clearance to clear small obstacles on the road. There was a reason why the Audi A8 of this era was found in many of the Transporter movies, as it can do a lot safely and comfortably. Overall, my car has been solid. It has been driven up to 145 MPH, and it is a dream and a pleasure to drive. Audi parts are not the cheapest compared to Mercedes or BMW, but I did notice that they tend to last a long time. On a side note, make sure to have your car intake cleaned out at the earliest 50K miles and latest 100K miles, as carbon build-up can dramatically reduce the performance of the vehicle and gas mileage. Is the A8 a car you can do a lot of do-it-yourself work on?Yes, tune ups are definitely possible. However, please be aware that some jobs that involve working on the front of the car may result in the front bumper being removed. Spark plugs on BMW and Mercedes need replacing at approximately 75K to 100K miles, but on the Audi A8, it's every 40K miles. If you have a lot of carbon deposit build-up, be aware that you'll be going through plugs much more frequently. For oil changes, I recommend using Mobil 1 0W-40 every 5,000 miles. By keeping your oil and filter changed every 5,000 miles, you won't be disappointed. These V8 engines don't burn oil, so you shouldn't need to add any oil between oil changes. For fuel, I suggest using Chevron and Shell only to keep the high-pressure fuel pumps clean at all times. These cars have two high-pressure pumps on the top of the engine and one low-pressure pump in the tank. They are not cheap to replace, so I keep clean fuel in the car and add an additive every 5,000 miles from Audi. Overall, this car is a 10/10. I highly recommend buying one with service records.

  2. Bernie Jacobi 2025-02-28

I purchased this car with 65k miles on it and added an extended warranty that takes me to 115k or 2017. Although it has been expensive to maintain, every time I slide behind the wheel, a sly grin creeps across my face. I've put over 30k miles on it, from Walmart trips to 600 mile East Coast jaunts through the mountains of PA and NY. This car does everything superbly, with acceleration, steering, and braking that exude confidence at every moment. The interior gauges, controls, and ergonomics are perfect, and the headlamps and cornering lamps are absolutely outstanding. When my son got his license, I sat in the back for essentially the first time and was pleasantly surprised by the amount of room. Although I eventually traded it in for a 2014 Cadillac CTS4 Performance, I'm sure the Audi will be the finest car I've owned since I started driving in 1973 and have owned well over 30 vehicles. The Caddy proved unreliable, so at 40k I dumped it for a 2015 A8 4.0 with 18k, CPO. In just under 6 months and 7,000 miles, I'm back in automotive heaven. What a machine! Look for my review in the appropriate section...

  3. Vito Dickens 2025-02-28

Congratulations on your new A8L 4.2 V8! It sounds like you made an excellent choice. The attention to detail in the interior leather and wood is truly impressive, and I'm glad to hear that the drive is both smooth and precise. The all-wheel drive is definitely a great feature that adds to the feeling of confidence on the road. Your black car with Amaretto Leather and B & O stereo sounds like a dream come true! I'm sure your girls are thrilled with the power rear seats and the amazing rear seat room. Enjoy your luxurious new ride!

  4. Buster Wunsch 2025-02-24

Your black on black A8L sounds like a dream! It's built to last and is as quiet as a mouse, except when accelerating, when it has a nice little throaty tone. You've had some great cars in the past, including an A6 2.7 which was fun, and you still have an A6 4.2 (2002) which is still solid and fun to drive. Your 2006 A8L was great, but it sounds like the 07 car is even better. It's understated, sumptuous, quick, and solid - everything one could want!

  5. Jared Walsh 2025-02-12

Congratulations on your new Audi A8L! It's great to hear that you are enjoying the materials, ergonomics, and ease of use of your new car. The USB connection for flash drive with MP3s and the improved dash display sound like great features. It's wonderful that you prefer the MMI to the Mercedes iCommand or the Lexus touch screen currently available. The addition of a camera to the Parktronic system is also a great improvement. It's good to know that your previous Audi proved to be very reliable, with only the Sirius Module failing in 3 years. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
