2023 Nissan Kicks problems
The Nissan Kicks (Japanese: 日産・キックス, Hepburn: Nissan Kikkusu) is a subcompact crossover SUV produced by Nissan since 2016. The crossover was initially introduced as a concept car under the same name and was premiered at the 2014 São Paulo International Motor Show. Nissan claimed the concept is inspired by the streets of Brazil. Currently, the Kicks nameplate is used for two similar-looking vehicles, albeit being built on different platforms with different dimensions.
The V platform-based Kicks debuted in São Paulo, Brazil in mid-2016 with the P15 chassis code. The car was designed collaboratively by Nissan's design headquarters in Atsugi, Japan, Nissan Design America (NDA) in San Diego, California, and Nissan Design America Rio de Janeiro. The Kicks was then gradually rolling out across Latin America, then it entered the United States and Canada in 2018 to replace the Juke as the subcompact crossover offering in both countries.
The B0 platform-based Kicks was introduced in India in January 2019 with the D15 chassis code. The company stated the vehicle is built on the platform to reduce production costs. It is slightly larger than the V platform-based Kicks, and retained the same wheelbase as the first-generation Dacia Duster and the B0 platform-based Renault Captur. The D15 Kicks ceased production in 2023.
The second-generation Kicks was introduced for the North American market in March 2024.

Common 2023 Nissan Kicks problems
The Nissan Kicks 2023 has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to electronics and engine power.
One of the most frequently reported issues is the random illumination of warning lights on the dashboard, including the forward collision warning light. This problem has been attributed to dirt or condensation on the front sensor, misaligned sensors, or other possible issues. The issue is reported to occur more frequently in snowy, humid weather, or under direct sunlight.
Another problem reported by multiple Nissan Kicks owners is that the vehicle stalls randomly. According to a Nissan service bulletin, this issue could be caused by wrong Engine Control Module (ECM) calibration, which can be resolved by reprogramming the ECM.
The Nissan Kicks 2023 has also been reported to have issues with the rearview camera, although the specific nature of these issues has not been specified.
In addition to these electronics-related problems, the Nissan Kicks 2023 has been criticized for its lack of a powerful engine. It comes with a four-cylinder engine that produces only 122 horsepower and 114 lb-ft of torque, which has been described as inadequate for a subcompact SUV.
Despite these problems, the Nissan Kicks 2023 has been praised for its stylish design, comfortable ride, good fuel economy, and affordable price. However, owner satisfaction with the vehicle has been relatively low, with only about half of respondents in a Consumer Reports survey stating that they would purchase the Kicks again.
The 2023 Nissan Kicks is expected to have about average reliability when compared to other new cars, based on similar models and the Nissan brand scores. However, it is important to note that reliability can vary significantly between individual vehicles and model years, and that the Kicks has had several reported issues in its 2023 model year.
In summary, the Nissan Kicks 2023 has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to electronics and engine power. While the vehicle has been praised for its design, ride, and fuel economy, owner satisfaction has been relatively low, and it is important to carefully consider the potential risks and benefits before purchasing a Nissan Kicks 2023.
Are there any issues with the Nissan Kicks?
This year, Nissan issued a recall that affects around 12,000 Kicks SUVs and Versa sedans over a defective component affecting the electronic power steering system. The manufacturer has communicated that specific 2021 Kicks and Versa models may experience a loss of assistance from the EPS system.
Does 2023 Nissan Kicks have transmission problems?
If you don't routinely and consistently change your fluids at least each 30,000 miles or so, you may find that your 2023 Nissan Kicks transmission will expeditiously slip.
What is the weakness of the Nissan Kicks?
The Nissan Kicks platform has been indirectly inspired by Logan's platform of 2006-07. This is a very old platform for a 2019 car. NVH levels and hardening of the clutch are obvious issues here.
Is Nissan Kicks a good reliable car?
The 2024 Nissan Kicks is an accessible, affordable SUV that shines in city driving and commuting. While it compromises on interior quality and power, it's still an attractive option if you're looking for reliability on a budget.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-24
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 3N1CP5CV6PL
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Another vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign and ran into the front driver side of my vehicle. Air bags were supposed to be deployed on my vehicle due to the impact of the collision, however, they were not. Air bags could have prevented injury if they had functioned properly. Vehicle is now a total loss.
STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-05
- VIN: 3N1CP5DV3PL
- Components: STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: Hello, I noticed my battery light came Friday, April 5th, but the indicator light went off after about 45 seconds. Saturday, April 6th, I was driving and the battery light came on again, after 5 minutes the acceleration stopped working as I turned into the subdivision. The vehicle was going 5mph, I was able to make to a relatives house. Once I pull in the driveway, all of the indicator lights came on and a warning message appeared, Malfunction See Owners Manual. My cousin tried jumping the battery, but it still wouldn't start, so he tried again. I was finally able to start the vehicle, but I was only able to move it from the driveway to the street before the power steering went out and the vehicle shut off. I had the vehicle towed to the dealership Monday, April, 8th, they did a diagnostic Tuesday, April 9th. I was told the battery lost 3 cells, so they replaced it and told me I can take it home. After I finished my night workout, I'm driving home, it's now around 12 am Wednesday, April 10th (today) and the same thing happens. Battery light comes on, no acceleration, power steering goes out, all of the indicator lights are on with the Malfunction warning, and finally the vehicle cuts off. I left it parked in a random neighborhood, and I'm having it towed again this evening after work. I have pictures and video evidence. This vehicle is not safe to drive. Thank you.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-15
- VIN: 3N1CP5DV3PL
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: I was sitting at a light during rush hour with my kids. The light turned green, but nothing happened when I pushed the car accelerator. I put my flashers on and tried not to panic. I put the car in park, turned it off, then turned it back on. The car worked properly and I was able to be move out of the intersection to the side of the road. Oil and engine appeared normal and there were no noises signaling an issue. I called Nissan and drove it to the dealership to submit it for repairs. The dealership reviewed it and tested it for two days only to tell me their computer couldn’t detect a problem. They also told me that the issue was under engineer review, and did not have any fixes currently. They told me they couldn’t do anything, and I could come get my car. This was my family car and I do not feel safe driving it anymore. My car is less than six months old and had less than ten thousand miles on it. It shouldn’t be stalling and leaving my kids and I stopped in the middle of the road.
ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-25
- VIN: 3N1CP5CV3PL
- Components: ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I purchased the vehicle in April of 2023. It has just over 2000 miles on it. I don't drive it very much. Starting in January of 2024, I’ve been having intermittent issues with my fairly new Nissan Kicks vehicle, as follows: •Engine stalling at stop •Forward Emergency Brake (FEB) Sensor activates when no obstruction present – and while driving full speed on road I have taken the vehicle to the dealership Service Center for evaluation several times. As of today (2/13/2024) They have had it for a week. While I have been told there is a software update to fix the engine stalling issue (no time frame for release of the software upgrade), they are unable to reproduce the FEB sensor issue and have recommended that I continue to drive the vehicle with this problem. Diving the vehicle with an intermittent FEB sensor issue is unsafe and is placing me and others on the road at risk for accident, injury, and potentially death. I did not sign up to be a crash test dummy/guinea pig in order to help Nissan troubleshoot dangerous sensor issues.
SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-17
- VIN: 3N1CP5BV8PL
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: We were simply backing out of our driveway and the system began to beep as if something was behind the vehicle. I got out and walked behind the car and there was nothing there. I began backing up again and the vehicle suddenly stopped in a grinding halt. No matter what I did I could not make the car back up. This is a 2023 car with 2000 miles on it. It took about 10 minutes to back out of the driveway with no explanation or reason. We traveled to a store and tried to back out of a parking stall and this happened again with no obstruction behind us. I took it to the dealer and they said the car was performing within parameters. The said they are not permitted to do anything with the AEB sensors. The impact of the sudden braking was alarming. Later the collision alert light came on while traveling at 50 mph but the car did not automatically brake. We are afraid to drive this car because of this and if we ever had to move the car quickly out of danger it would be dangerous.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-10
- VIN: 3N1CP5DV6PL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Today date 11.14.2023. Stalled problem on traffic light. It's hapen 2 times. First time 2 weeks ago, do not remember date. Second time its hapen 11.10.2023. On red light my car is stalled. Than I turn my flashers, alredy was green light. People start go around my car. Restart my car and drive my car home. Its not save drive car like this. I by this car 10.24.23. Today back from dealership thay say no problem? And I don't know what to do next?
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-21
- VIN: 3N1CP5DV2PL
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The AEB system activated without cause (phantom braking incident). While driving on a neighborhood street (25-30 mph), the car seized up, came to a near complete stop, and a red (outline) and white (background) triangle containing a bold red exclamation mark appeared on the dash display. There were no other cars around me, nor were there any other external conditions that would have activated the emergency brakes (fog, rain, shadows, etc.). We had two Nissan dealers check the car, but they are unable to recreate the condition; there were no error codes in the car's system related to the AEB activation. Our concern is the risk of a fatal accident if the AEB should be activated without cause while driving at higher speeds (in high traffic highway travel). The car stopping without warning on the highway could lead to a fatal accident. I tried to report the concern to Nissan Corporate, but they dismissed the complaint because the dealers were not able to recreate the incident during their inspection. I suspect there were no error codes in the system because the brakes did what they are intended to do. The fault appears to be inaccurate sensor data that activated the brakes; the sensors should be redesigned/calibrated/whatever to reduce invalid data input that activates the AEB. The dealer will not disable the system, claiming safety concerns. The no-cause AEB activation appears to be a greater risk than disabling the emergency brakes.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-07
- VIN: 3N1CP5DVXPL
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: While driving at about 25mph, the engine suddenly shut off without any warning. After the engine shut off the collision warning, battery and oil light indicators came on. The car remained in drive and started to roll backwards. When pressing the engine start button, nothing happened. After a few minutes the car was able to be restarted.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-11
- VIN: 3N1CP5CV5PL
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I was driving about 30 mph when my brakes were put on automatically and a red triangle blinked. I thought the warning had a D in the middle, but I can’t find that as a warning. There was not another car close to me at the time. The warning went away and then the car went back to normal.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-03
- VIN: 3N1CP5BV9PL
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: On July 5,2023, I was parking the Nissan Kicks in a street parking spot with my family on board. As I attempted to apply the brakes, I inadvertently pressed both the brake and gas pedals simultaneously due to the insufficient clearance between them. This unexpected response caused the vehicle to surge forward abruptly, nearly colliding with the car parked in front of me. The incident left my family and me shaken, as we narrowly escaped what could have been a disastrous accident. The design flaw of the brake and gas pedal clearance in the Nissan Kicks 2023 poses a significant safety hazard, putting the lives of drivers, passengers, and pedestrians at risk.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-23
- VIN: 3N1CP5CV1PL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: March 2023 Master Warning Light symbol on dashboard and Rear Automatic Braking (RAB) Warning Light symbol on dashboard. Warning Malfunction See Owner's Manual and Warning Parking Sensor Error See Owner's Manual. June 2023 Warning No Key Detected, Check Rear Seat for All Articles and Parking Sensor Off. VDC Settings Menu illuminated light dims while accelerating and returns to normal. Vehicle is available for inspection. Rear sensors are not working to warn of obstructions as designed. Two service dealerships have serviced vehicle. No repairs, only diagnostic testing at one location. DTC C1B56-04 (SONAR CIRCUIT), DTC B2720-66 (REAR SONAR SENSOR). No other inspections have been performed. March, prior to warnings while vehicle was in reverse, another vehicle turned from around a corner. My vehicle automatically made a hard stop to avoid contact with vehicle. Warning messages appeared afterward within same month. I asked service advisor and service manager at separate locations if hard stop could have caused warning malfunction messages but received no response.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-17
- VIN: 3N1CP5BVXPL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The components that failed in multiple instances include the engine shutting off in traffic at a stop light, the failure to accelerate as if the engine is stuck, and the forward collision warning indicator repeatedly coming on while driving with no one is front of me. An accident almost occurred while sitting at the traffic light when the car shut off and while trying to get on the highway and being unable to pick up speed puts our safety at risk. Additionally, the potential for an accident to occur while driving if the engine shuts off or forward collision sensor triggers the Automatic Emergency Braking system. The problems have been reported to the service center and the vehicle is scheduled for inspection and a diagnostic 02/20/23. There were no warning signs in the engine failure incident at the traffic light. The forward collision warning light comes on sporadically. The engine acceleration issue happens at unknown times while pulling off from lights to getting on the interstate ramps.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-24
- VIN: 3N1CP5CV8PL
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: December 30, 2022 To: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) (https://www.nhtsa.gov/) From: Robert Volck 7719 Pine Street, Manassas Va. 20111 Email: [email protected] I am writing to you to report a safety issue with my 2023 NISSAN KICKS. What occurs is the driver side door will not function properly when ambient air temperature is 25 degrees or below. When this first occurred, I reported the issue to the Priority Nissan dealership of Chantilly, Virginia. I had to climb over the center console in order to drive the car to the dealership and into their service bay (that was heated). The service manager tried to open the driver side door to let me out but the door would not unlock. Within two hours the service manager called and informed me the driver side door opens and works fine. When I arrived at the Priority Nissan dealership, I spoke to a sales manager and shared what had happened and he said it happened to him as well. On December 30, 2022, I called NISSAN service to report what I have been experiencing since December 24, 2022, when I brought my car in for the door not unlocking, as of yet the service manager has not returned my call. The NISSAN KICKs is a new car and if it had caught fire the safety issue is obvious. Would I have had enough time to escape from a burning car fire or for some other reason. God forbid if I had been involved in a car accident and the car caught fire and I needed to be pulled from the NISSAN KICKS to be saved. Sorry apologies just don’t get it. I hope you take my letter to the NHTS as a serious safety concern. thank you for listening to my concern. Sincerely, Robert Volck CC: Sam Hamdam [email protected] Managing Owner of Priority Nissan of Chantilly Va. The contact stated that the dealer service manager was able to resolve the issue with the vehicle.

This small SUV is a great economical car option. While it may not have as much power as some other SUVs in its class, it still provides a comfortable ride. The rear lift gate is manual, which may take some getting used to, but it's a minor inconvenience. Additionally, the car does not come with onboard Nav, but you can easily connect your cell phone to use Google Maps. While there are a few areas for improvement, such as the lack of front audible parking sensing and low audio for collision warning, overall this car is a great choice for those looking for an affordable and reliable option.

I love the idea of getting in the car and feeling that it is heavier and higher up than my last car.

My wife and I recently purchased a 2023 Kicks SV and we are absolutely thrilled with it! The gas mileage is fantastic and even with my height of 6 ft 6 and my wife's height of 5 ft 7, we have plenty of room. The ride is smooth and the car is easy to handle with plenty of power. Getting in and out of the car is a breeze and there is ample cargo room as well. We highly recommend upgrading to the SV trim level, as it is definitely worth it. Nissan has truly outdone themselves with the Kicks. If you take it for a test drive, you will definitely want to buy it!

I'm so glad to hear that you upgraded from a 2009 Nissan Cube! It sounds like your new car is a significant improvement in almost every way. Not only does it have better gas mileage, but it's also more comfortable and better looking. Enjoy your new ride!

It's great to hear that you found it very nice and it was a pleasure to handle.

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you mentioned having a 2022 kick, but you traded your 2020 Murano for it. It sounds like you're not too happy with your decision, especially since the car doesn't perform well in snow and ice. You even mentioned that you wish you had kept your Murano! I can definitely understand how frustrating that must be.
Nicola Nader 2024-07-02
I hope you had a good test drive! I noticed that the car seemed to lack power during acceleration and some of the interior components appeared to be cheaply made.
Wilfredo Murazik 2024-06-13
I've been driving my Kicks for a year now and overall, I'm quite happy with it. However, there are a few minor issues that I've noticed. For example, the TV screen is always washed out with glare due to its placement. Additionally, there isn't an ambient temperature display and the headlights don't have an automatic on/off setting. These are just some small things that most other cars seem to have.
Mason Hill 2024-03-15
Hey there! That's a really nice car you have.
Garrett Wolf 2024-01-26
It's been almost a year and I've driven 6730 miles in my Nissan. Unfortunately, it's been kicking terribly and has turned off twice now. I've made an appointment with the dealer, so hopefully, I'll find out what's going on soon. The check engine and oil light came on, but then disappeared and everything started working as if nothing had happened. I'm quite disappointed since it's a fairly new car with low mileage, and I always service it on time. Reading these reviews, I feel let down by the lack of responsibility Nissan has with its vehicles.
