The Nissan Kicks (Japanese: 日産・キックス, Hepburn: Nissan Kikkusu) is a subcompact crossover SUV produced by Nissan since 2016. The crossover was initially introduced as a concept car under the same name and was premiered at the 2014 São Paulo International Motor Show. Nissan claimed the concept is inspired by the streets of Brazil. Currently, the Kicks nameplate is used for two similar-looking vehicles, albeit being built on different platforms with different dimensions.

The V platform-based Kicks debuted in São Paulo, Brazil in mid-2016 with the P15 chassis code. The car was designed collaboratively by Nissan's design headquarters in Atsugi, Japan, Nissan Design America (NDA) in San Diego, California, and Nissan Design America Rio de Janeiro. The Kicks was then gradually rolling out across Latin America, then it entered the United States and Canada in 2018 to replace the Juke as the subcompact crossover offering in both countries.

The B0 platform-based Kicks was introduced in India in January 2019 with the D15 chassis code. The company stated the vehicle is built on the platform to reduce production costs. It is slightly larger than the V platform-based Kicks, and retained the same wheelbase as the first-generation Dacia Duster and the B0 platform-based Renault Captur. The D15 Kicks ceased production in 2023.

The second-generation Kicks was introduced for the North American market in March 2024.

Common 2018 Nissan Kicks problems

The 2018 Nissan Kicks has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to its electrical system.

Another electrical issue reported by Nissan Kicks owners is the random illumination of multiple warning lights, including the forward collision warning light, often for no apparent reason.

In addition to these electrical problems, some Nissan Kicks owners have reported issues with the rear view camera, including blurry images and the camera not displaying an image at all.

There have also been reports of the vehicle stalling randomly, which has been linked to incorrect Engine Control Module (ECM) calibration and a bad mass air flow sensor or low battery.

While there are not too many mechanical problems reported for the 2018 Nissan Kicks, there are concerns about the longevity of the CVT transmission and the potential expense of replacing it if it fails.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-19
  • VIN: 3N1CP5CU8JL
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: ABS system warning light turns on and off, and ABS fails after 50,000 miles on vehicle. System requires ABS actuator replacement, but replacement isn't reliable. Nissan has been contacted and refused to acknowledge issue or offer assistance with issue. This has been an issue in ALL Nissan Kicks and Leaf models dating back to 2018 and through current models. I believe a recall should be instated for this problem because multiple cars could potentially be driving without their ABS systems active. This could lead to poor ability to stop in inclement weather and could lead to more accidents on highways. The lights randomly turning off could mislead drivers into thinking that nothing is wrong with their vehicles. Upon first inspection at local Nissan dealership they reported no problem but loose battery terminal.

  • VIN: 3N1CP5CU2JL
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: Driver side coil spring broke near the lower part of the spring, spring was still seated and operating but rubbing on strut. There was no way to tell that the spring was broken other than the fact that I found the broken piece laying on the ground - so we immediately took it to Nissan to be repaired. This is the second coil spring to break - the passenger spring broke at the same location at around 46,000 miles - again no way to tell that the spring was broken other than the fact that I had visually inspected the car and noticed the spring broken. This is the exact same issue we had with our 2012 Nissan Versa - both coil springs within 60,000 miles - however Nissan did issue a recall for those parts.

  • Summary: We had just purchased the car days prior. Assuming it was reliable we traveled an hour from home in clear conditions. Forward collision sensor malfunctioned on the way to our destination. After arriving, we left the vehicle unattended for quite sometime, hoping the issue would resolve. After turning off the forward collision sensor once back in the vehicle, it shut off completely as we were merging on to the interstate, again in clear weather conditions. The vehicle would not move, and had shut down completely. After getting the vehicle back on the road, I had my sales team drop it off at Nissan in Russellville, AR. It has since been seen 3 separate times for the same forward collision sensor malfunction. It will not drive, and I feel very unsafe with this vehicle on the road.

The danger of this is that sometimes they will go off. And you can't see anything if it's dark. There was no warning light prior to the problem. POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-23
  • VIN: 3N1CP5CU8JL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: Here I am for a 3rd time reporting an issue with this car. After work I went to get in my car. I could not turn it on, I was not able to push the brake and a lot of lights came on. I decided it needed jumped so I got jumped. The next day I remote start the car and see it did not turn on. So I went out to start it and it once again didnt start. I jumped it again. I then decided it needed a new battery as it was the original to the car. I went to batteries plus and the guy was not even sure how I managed to jump it as it was completely drained. He mentioned something about the alternator. The one I just had replaced a year ago for my car stopping on me at speeds of 50+. He recommended me not to drive it and get it towed to a dealership. He tested my alternator and said it is not testing where is should. I had a tow truck driver follow me to South Colorado Springs Nissan. I took it in they said the battery test (brand new battery that was only hours old) and my alternator both failed testing. They then let me car sit over the weekend and of course its acting normal now. Clearly something is triggering the alternator to fail quickly as I had just got this one replaced a year ago. That needs to be looked into more. They didn't find anything and sent me on my way. The photos attached are from the 2 years worth of problems I have had.

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-05
  • VIN: 3N1CP5CU2JL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: This car has been shutting down without warning, everything goes haywire and shuts off. When or if it start back up, the gauges aren't working. Several times I have had to jump start the vehicle. I was almost hit by an 18-wheeler, and I cringe at the fact my Dad or Son could have been driving or I could had my nieces or grandchildren in the car with me. My Dad purchased this car last year and it still doesn't have 45,000 miles on it. I tried to get it into a Nissan Services center, and I have to wait until the end of next week to have it checked out. This vehicle is a death trap.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-02
  • VIN: 3N1CP5CU7JL
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Back on 2021. My children and I were in a Starbucks Drive through, as we were waiting in line. As the car in front of us stopped, I press on the brake petal to stop and the vehicle began to shake and I noticed the idle meter was moving up and down, then suddenly our car stalled. Everything was lighting up but the engine stop. I put the gear on park then I pressed the Engine On button then the car started. After that everytime I press on the brake it does the same thing. I am afraid to drive the car far away because everytime I stopped on a stop light for certain amount of time, the car seem to show the same symptom, where first it shakes then the idle begins to move up and down again. It places me and my children at a very dangerous risk whenever the car stalls on the left lane of a stop light or any other stop signs. And it is scary if other driver doesn’t see our vehicle at night. The other problem with the car is whenever I shift the gear to either Park, Drive or Reverse. I have to firmly press on the brake for the gear to change or move also whenever the gear change we hear a loud noise underneath the vehicle.

Nissan says it’s functioning properly even though there is a forum of people with same issue.

2018 Nissan Kicks recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2018 Nissan Kicks.

2019-09-12
  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Nissan Altima, Armada, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Titan Diesel, Versa Note and Versa Sedan vehicles, as well as Infiniti Q50, Q60, QX30 and QX80 vehicles. Additionally included are 2019 Nissan GT-R and Taxi and Infiniti QX50, QX60, Q70, Q70L vehicles. • Consequence: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners in phases, having dealers update the back-up camera settings software, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2019 and all affected VINs should be activated. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200.

Negative 2018 Nissan Kicks car reviews

  1. Major Swift 2025-02-07

I was thrilled when I purchased my 2018 Nissan Kicks at the beginning of 2021. It's a compact SUV that meets my needs while still being fuel-efficient and spacious. Although I didn't notice the major defects right away, I became aware of them after having to return the car for service three times. The transmission had completely failed, and it took 45 days to get it back because the transmission was on back order from China or Japan. After getting it back, I noticed some minor issues that became more apparent over time. For instance, the Nissan Connect display is angled towards the windshield, causing a glare that makes the reverse camera unsafe and virtually useless. Additionally, only the driver's seat has an armrest, which is inconvenient for passengers. They usually rest their arms in the door to their right, which is where the window button is located. As a result, they accidentally roll down the window. The cup holders are also set too far back, making them difficult to reach when the driver's armrest is up. Furthermore, there is no center console, and the glovebox is too small to store anything other than documents and the manual. Lastly, the dashboard has a bumpy texture that is not comfortable, and the middle vents are angled backwards at the bottom, making them ineffective. Overall, the car has some design flaws that could be improved, but I still enjoy driving it.The driver and passenger vents spin unnecessarily, and due to the angles, bumpy texture, and weird vent shapes, there are literally zero locations to put any sort of cell phone mount. Unfortunately, setting your phone with GPS on down by the gearshift is not an option either, as it's angled all weird too, and there's no flat space to place it that's easy to see while driving. I have yet to find any helpful features in this car. It has slow pickup, is underpowered for its size, and has a poorly designed interior. Overall, I would not buy this car again.

  2. Zachary Schowalter 2025-01-20

I have owned my 2018 Kicks for three months and have already put 7,000 miles on it. Despite my previous ownership of a 2013 Altima SL, which I loved, I must say that the Kicks has exceeded my expectations. The car has proven to be very fuel-efficient, with an average of 32.5 mpg, even with my daily commute of 70 miles on low traffic highways. The parking assist cameras and blind spot sensors have been a game-changer for me, making parking and driving in east Texas much easier and safer. The two USB ports in the back are a great feature for my teenagers, and the backseat and cargo area are surprisingly spacious for a compact car. The removable hard shell privacy cover for the cargo area is also a nice touch. Lastly, the Kicks' exterior design is eye-catching and has received many compliments. The only downside I have experienced is the small gas tank, which requires frequent refueling. Overall, I am confident in recommending the 2018 Kicks to anyone in the market for a reliable and stylish compact car.The car's gas mileage is great, but the gas tank is too small for consumers with long commutes. The seats are uncomfortable and not well-padded, causing discomfort even on short drives. The armrest is scratchy and not padded well, and there is only one for the driver. The silver-coated pieces in the high traffic area of the armrest/handle on the inside of the doors look scratched up and old within a week. The cameras are helpful, but require daily cleaning and the rear one still looks blurry. The technology has bugs, causing the display screen to freeze or blank out an average of three times a week. The A/C-heater also has issues. These are all areas that can be improved upon and I hope to have them fixed when I take the car back to Nissan for work. The temperature control system does not adjust according to the readout, resulting in extreme hot or cold air blowing out. The lack of in-between temperatures makes it difficult to feel comfortable. However, I will update the last few paragraphs after my visit to the Nissan service shop.

  3. Keagan Carter 2024-09-10

I took my vehicle in to have the window and door seals checked due to air leaks. The dealership informed me that this is a common issue with this vehicle and unfortunately, there was nothing they could do about it. They mentioned that they are making cuts where they can. I previously owned a Kia Rio and never had any issues with it, but unfortunately, it had too many miles for long trips. In hindsight, I should have stuck with getting a new Kia. I have learned my lesson and there will be no future Nissans for this household!

  4. Kennedy Larson 2024-07-04

We are the Nissan family and I have owned Nissans since the zx 240. We strongly considered the Kicks based on its price/functionality proportion, but after trying it, we ultimately went with the Sentra. The transmission was a major concern for me, as it was made in China and that was a deal breaker. I have had negative experiences in the past with GM vehicles that had Chinese engines and other components, and I would not even wish it on my enemies. While I might consider a mirror made in China or a part of upholstery to be okay, I would never knowingly put a part made in China into my engine, transmission, steering, or suspension.

  5. Randal Stark 2024-07-01

I purchased my 2018 Nissan Kicks SR with only 3 miles on it. Unfortunately, I have experienced a few issues with the car. The air conditioner was blowing hot air, but after taking it in for service, they discovered a major defect and replaced it. The brakes started squeaking within 4 months, and it turned out they were defective, resulting in a month-long wait for parts and replacement of all the brakes. The radio went completely black, but it was a recall issue that was fixed. However, it turned out that the radio was also defective, so it was replaced. Currently, there is another strange squeaking sound, but the dealership was unable to replicate it. Despite these issues, I am hopeful that the dealership will continue to work with me to resolve any problems. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Positive 2018 Nissan Kicks car reviews

  1. Grayson Nienow 2025-02-13

I love the two-tone color of my Nissan Kicks! The gun metal gray with the monarch orange top and mirrors really make it stand out. It came with 18-inch rims and dark tint all around, which adds to its sleek look. When I was considering buying a new car, I was worried about the power issues I read about with some models. However, after test driving the Jeep Renegade and being disappointed with the lack of acceleration and power, I tried out the 2018 Kicks and was pleasantly surprised with how it just took off! It has great gas mileage and much more room than the Renegade. I have the S (base model) and I absolutely love it. I've had my Kicks for over a year now and I still love it. I haven't had any problems except for alignment, which the dealer took care of (it happened within 10,000 miles). The acceleration is still good, fuel economy is good, and it looks and runs great. I have almost 20,000 miles on it now!

  2. Sheldon Schuppe 2025-02-04

These rides are so comfortable and have everything you need for short or long drives!

  3. Winfield Shields 2025-01-27

I have identified a problem with the front sensor over a month ago, and I am confident that I can find a solution to this issue. Despite previous attempts by the dealer, the problem still persists. I am confident that I can work with the dealer to find a solution that will resolve the issue once and for all.

  4. Aaron Torp 2025-01-10

I really like my Kicks! I bought it brand new with only 50 miles and I find it to be a steal at the price. It handles well and, although the CVT is an adjustment, I really enjoy how it drives. As others have mentioned, the climate control can be a bit picky, but it's nothing too major. The collision detection tends to get 'blocked' by the rain, even in a light drizzle, and throws a warning light and notification, which can be a bit frustrating. Additionally, the entertainment touchscreen occasionally blacks out and becomes unusable until you restart the car, but it's only a minor annoyance. My biggest concern so far has been that it once stalled the engine at a stoplight. We stopped, the Kicks shuddered and then stalled completely. We had to restart it in the middle of the road. I hope Nissan addresses these problems soon. It would make me much happier if they did. So far, there have been no recalls on a vehicle with clearly multiple issues.

I bought my son a Nissan Kicks for his 17th birthday and he really loves it! The only thing is that it doesn't have a lot of power, which is a bit of a bummer for my son and me. But overall, we still love it!
