The Nissan Kicks (Japanese: 日産・キックス, Hepburn: Nissan Kikkusu) is a subcompact crossover SUV produced by Nissan since 2016. The crossover was initially introduced as a concept car under the same name and was premiered at the 2014 São Paulo International Motor Show. Nissan claimed the concept is inspired by the streets of Brazil. Currently, the Kicks nameplate is used for two similar-looking vehicles, albeit being built on different platforms with different dimensions.

The V platform-based Kicks debuted in São Paulo, Brazil in mid-2016 with the P15 chassis code. The car was designed collaboratively by Nissan's design headquarters in Atsugi, Japan, Nissan Design America (NDA) in San Diego, California, and Nissan Design America Rio de Janeiro. The Kicks was then gradually rolling out across Latin America, then it entered the United States and Canada in 2018 to replace the Juke as the subcompact crossover offering in both countries.

The B0 platform-based Kicks was introduced in India in January 2019 with the D15 chassis code. The company stated the vehicle is built on the platform to reduce production costs. It is slightly larger than the V platform-based Kicks, and retained the same wheelbase as the first-generation Dacia Duster and the B0 platform-based Renault Captur. The D15 Kicks ceased production in 2023.

The second-generation Kicks was introduced for the North American market in March 2024.

Common Nissan Kicks problems

The Nissan Kicks, a small front-wheel drive crossover, has been known to have several common problems, particularly in the 2019 model year. The most-reported problem is the need for a throttle body replacement, which can cost an average of $1,300 to fix, with no reported average mileage at which the problem occurs.

Electrical problems are another common issue, with some owners reporting blown horns, loss of power while driving uphill, and malfunctioning warning lights. A 2020 Nissan Kicks owner reported that the car has a damaged part inside the steering wheel, which costs thousands of dollars to replace. The same owner also reported that the car's electrical system causes it to lose power while driving uphill, and that Nissan has yet to address the issue.

The Kicks is also known for sensor problems, with multiple owners reporting issues with the front warning sensor detecting collisions when no other vehicle is in view. This can cause the engine malfunction light to come on randomly, as well as the crash sensors warning to activate. One owner reported that their 2020 Kicks has had multiple sensor issues, including coming to a complete stop on the highway, since purchasing it new. Despite taking the vehicle to the dealership for repairs, the issues have not been resolved.

The Kicks' continuously variable transmission (CVT) has also been a source of complaints, with some owners reporting that it can slip and make a grinding sound. This can be a costly problem to fix, as the transmission is expensive to replace if it fails. While Nissan has updated the CVT in their 2019+ models, there are still reports of issues with the transmission, particularly right outside the warranty window.

Finally, the Kicks' engine has been known to have problems, with some owners reporting that the car shuts off while driving or does not accelerate beyond 35 mph. An owner of a 2021 Nissan Kicks reported that their car's engine light came on and the car would not shift gears, despite being new with zero miles on it.

In summary, the Nissan Kicks has several common problems, particularly in the 2019 model year. These issues include throttle body replacement, electrical problems, sensor problems, CVT transmission issues, and engine problems. While Nissan has updated the CVT in their 2019+ models, there are still reports of issues with the transmission. Owners have reported that these problems can be costly to fix and may not be covered under warranty.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-26
  • VIN: 3N1CP5CU8JL

  • Summary: ABS system warning light turns on and off, and ABS fails after 50,000 miles on vehicle. System requires ABS actuator replacement, but replacement isn't reliable. Nissan has been contacted and refused to acknowledge issue or offer assistance with issue. This has been an issue in ALL Nissan Kicks and Leaf models dating back to 2018 and through current models. I believe a recall should be instated for this problem because multiple cars could potentially be driving without their ABS systems active. This could lead to poor ability to stop in inclement weather and could lead to more accidents on highways. The lights randomly turning off could mislead drivers into thinking that nothing is wrong with their vehicles. Upon first inspection at local Nissan dealership they reported no problem but loose battery terminal.

  • VIN: 3N1CP5CU6KL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: My 2018 Nissan kicks stalled several times, twice while at a stop light and once while driving. There was no warning or any indicators letting me know that the vehicle stalled. The two times at the light I was only able to notice because I couldn’t get the car to go while pressing the gas. The time I was driving the car suddenly stalled and slowed down and the steering wheel became stiff. I had to place it in neutral and pull over. I took my car to the manufacturer where I bought the car and explained it to them. It stalled in them as well but they couldn’t find a reason for it and told me that it could be my key fob cover and the battery. We changed the battery on 08/07/24 and it just stalled again today at a stop light on 08/08/24. This rules out the key and fob and cover so it must be the something with the transmission or engine. Either way, it becomes unsafe especially while it stalls while driving.

My engine is sludge!! I’ve been doing oil changes and now I have 44,000 miles on it and the oil is all sludge not to mention I’m having issues with my radio turning off and the air vent is coming out. Very disappointed as this was my first brand new car I purchased, never again!!!

Purchased a new 2021 Nissan Kicks SR in Jan. 2021. Only problems we have had with is the stitching coming loose on the leather seats . It has happened on 2 of the 4 seats so far . Nissan is finally replacing them after a long wait for parts . Car was also out of alignment from the factory which the dealer also fixed. At least Nissan is backing their product its warranty coverage . Just a nuisance to fix a new car .

I recently purchased my Nissan Kicks SV from Michael Jordan Nissan in Durham, NC. It only had 10 miles on it. As a loyal Nissan customer, I have purchased 12 cars from them in the last 15 years and have never had any issues. Currently, I am leasing another Nissan Rogue Sport from MJ Nissan, which we absolutely love. However, I have been experiencing some trouble with my Kicks SV. After about a week of driving it, I noticed that the temperature in the car was off. It would be cold at 61 degrees and hot at 62 degrees and above, which was quite frustrating. I contacted the dealership and they were very helpful. They replaced one of the sensors, but unfortunately, it did not solve the problem. They then replaced the sensor board, but still no luck. At this point, I was quite fed up and just wanted a car that I could control the temperature in. The dealership informed me that I would need to contact Nissan directly to start the arbitration process. I spoke with Markita Scott, an arbitration specialist from the dispute resolution team, who arranged for a Nissan technician to inspect the car. Unfortunately, the earliest appointment available was not until January 15th, which was quite a wait. However, Michael Jordan Nissan was kind enough to provide me with a loaner car in the meantime. Although the loaner car had the same issue, the dealership was able to provide me with a Nissan Rogue Sport, which worked beautifully and I absolutely loved. On January 15th, I met with the Nissan technician at the dealership for the inspection. We got into the car and warmed it up. My technician companion had his computer hooked up, checking it out. We went for a drive, but the temperature remained the same: 61-60 degrees. It was cold, and even after an hour in the car, with him making adjustments on his computer, there was no change. He started to suggest that this might be how the car was designed to work, and that once the internal temperature of the car meets the desired temperature, it should start working. I replied, 'Do you think this is my first car?' He agreed that it didn't seem right and said he was going to check two other Kicks SVs to compare and finish his report. Later, I received a call from Markita, a very nice lady, who said that Nissan would be declining arbitration because the climate control is working as it is designed, according to the technician's report. I was shocked and asked, 'So you mean to tell me that Nissan purposely designed a climate system that doesn't allow you to control the temperature?' She replied that it was working as it was designed, but offered me a settlement of $1500 for the repairs performed and for any inconvenience it caused. However, if I agreed to the settlement, I would not sue Nissan in the future, and I would still have a car that does not work properly. I don't think so, Nissan! This is not right! This is not how you treat loyal customers. Has this happened to anyone else?

I had the pleasure of renting this vehicle for a business trip and I must say, I was impressed with its stylish and compact design. It's definitely a more attractive option than the discontinued Juke. However, after driving it for a while, I noticed that while it does some things well, it falls short in some key areas. As an owner of a 2015 Murano and a Nissan Rogue, I can say that the styling inside and out is very attractive and the dashboard design is excellent with terrific ergonomics and visibility. It's also easy to get in and out of, and the mileage seems decent. The ride is reasonably quiet, even on the highway, and at highway speeds, engine speeds were <2,000 rpm, which is excellent for a four-cylinder. The acceleration around town at low to mid-range speeds is reasonably sprightly and it handles well, seeming very stable and responsive. The media screen is large and the controls are well-placed. However, it's underpowered and should at least offer an engine upgrade as an option. 140-150 hp would probably be fine and better suited to this vehicle. The seats are also uncomfortable for longer trips, causing my thighs to hurt just after a couple of hours of driving, something I never experienced in my Murano, the Rogue, or various Altimas I have rented. Additionally, this car should offer an AWD option, but would definitely need an engine upgrade for that. Overall, it's a decent entry-level SUV, but Nissan clearly compromised on some significant things on a car that's the logical successor to the Juke. They definitely improved the design and ergonomics. If Nissan would offer AWD and a more powerful engine, I'd consider buying one. It's a cute little vehicle with some good features and a lot of potential.

The Nissan Kicks is a nimble car that handles well in the city and on open roads. However, on windy days, the lightness of the car can make steering more difficult and negatively affect fuel efficiency. While the CVT transmission is not a crime, some drivers may prefer a regular automatic transmission for smoother acceleration. The ride can be a bit bumpy, but this is common for crossovers. The turning radius and size of the car make it a great choice for crowded cities, but it may not comfortably fit five passengers. The zero-gravity seats are comfortable, but objects placed on them may roll around during turns or braking. The hill start assist is helpful, but the car may feel underpowered with only 1.6L and 149NM torque. Additionally, the CVT transmission can be loud during acceleration. Overall, I like the Kicks, but some drivers may prefer a more powerful engine.

I'm on my fourth Nissan now, and this is my third one in a row. I brought my 2016 Altima in for service, and while I was waiting, I took a look around the showroom. That's when I spotted this little car, and I have to say, it's much easier to get in and out of than the Altima. What I love most about it is the handling. I can turn this car around in the middle of the street with room to spare! However, there are a couple of things that I'm not too keen on. Firstly, the headlights don't seem to illuminate as far down the road as I'd like them to, and they appear to be a bit yellow to me, almost like they're incandescent. Secondly, I miss the electric seats of the Altima. The seats in the Kicks are manually adjustable, and you can't effectively lower the seat to the floor, but only tilt the seat pan. This leaves the front part under your legs at an odd angle, which can feel a bit strange at first.

I wasn't sure how I would like a 4-cylinder engine since I'm used to much bigger ones, but the Kicks has me sold! Previously, I had a Murano which is still going strong at 180,000 miles. However, I was really drawn to the Kicks because of its looks, features, and price. I have a 2019 SR model and I am extremely pleased with the vehicle. I've even gotten as high as 48 mpg, but on average I get 38 mpg. You really can't beat that these days. The Kicks is roomy, comfortable, and I have had zero issues with it.
