The Suzuki Vitara is a series of SUVs produced by Suzuki in five generations since 1988. The second and third generation were known as the Suzuki Grand Vitara, while the fourth generation eschewing the "Grand" prefix. In Japan and a number of other markets, all generations have used the name Suzuki Escudo (Japanese: スズキ・エスクード, Hepburn: Suzuki Esukūdo).

The choice of the name "Vitara" was inspired by the Latin word vita, as in English word vitality. "Escudo", the name primarily used in the Japanese Domestic Market, refers to the "escudo", the monetary unit of Portugal before adoption of the Euro. The original series was designed to fill the slot above the Suzuki Jimny. The first generation was known as Suzuki Sidekick in the United States. The North American version was produced as a joint venture between Suzuki and General Motors known as CAMI. It was also sold as the Santana 300 and 350 in Spain and in the Japanese market, it was also sold as the Mazda Proceed Levante.

The second generation was launched in 1998 under the "Grand Vitara" badge in most markets. It was accompanied by a still larger SUV known as the Suzuki XL-7 (known as Grand Escudo in Japan). The third generation was launched in 2005.

The fourth generation, released in 2015, reverted to the original name "Vitara" in most markets, but shifted from an off-road SUV towards a more road-oriented crossover style. It shares the platform and many components with the slightly larger SX4 S-Cross.

The model introduced in 2022 for the Indian market only reuses the "Grand Vitara" nameplate. It is slightly larger than the SX4 S-Cross.

Common 1995 Suzuki Sidekick problems

The Suzuki Sidekick, introduced in 1995, is a popular compact SUV known for its off-road capabilities and affordability. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported.

One of the most frequently mentioned issues with the 1995 Suzuki Sidekick is a faulty wheel speed sensor, which can trigger the parking indicator light to come on. This problem has been reported on CarSurvey.org and Car Complaints, and it can be a significant inconvenience for drivers.

Another common problem with the 1995 Suzuki Sidekick is leaking engine oil from the front crankshaft seal. This issue can lead to significant engine damage if not addressed promptly, and it can also cause the vehicle to consume more oil than usual.

The throttle position sensor is another component that can fail in the 1995 Suzuki Sidekick. This sensor is responsible for controlling the fuel-air mixture that enters the engine, and a failure can result in poor engine performance, stalling, or difficulty starting.

In addition to these issues, the 1995 Suzuki Sidekick can also experience problems with the accelerator pedal sticking. This issue can be dangerous, as it can cause the vehicle to suddenly accelerate or lose power while driving.

The 1995 Suzuki Sidekick's driver's side door has also been reported to have a manufacturing defect that causes the interior door light to come on when the door is closed. This issue can be a minor annoyance, but it can also indicate a more significant problem with the door's wiring or electrical system.

Another common problem with the 1995 Suzuki Sidekick is uneven front brake rotors, which can cause jerks when stopping the vehicle. This issue can be a safety concern, as it can make it difficult to stop the vehicle quickly and safely.

Finally, the door locks on the 1995 Suzuki Sidekick have been reported to freeze in winter, which can be a significant inconvenience for drivers. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including moisture buildup in the lock mechanism or exposure to extreme cold temperatures.

In summary, the 1995 Suzuki Sidekick has several common problems that owners have reported, including a faulty wheel speed sensor, leaking engine oil from the front crankshaft seal, a failing throttle position sensor, a sticking accelerator pedal, a manufacturing defect with the driver's side door, uneven front brake rotors, and door locks that freeze in winter. These issues can range from minor annoyances to significant safety concerns, and it is essential for owners to address them promptly to ensure the safe and reliable operation of their vehicle.

Negative 1995 Suzuki Sidekick car reviews

  1. Saige Nicolas 2024-06-15

This very small SUV has all the power of a 4 cyl and all the gas mileage of an 8 cyl. The 4 wheel drive works pretty well, but it's worth noting that replacement parts can be pricey - for example, a serpentine belt can cost up to $35.

  2. Hunter Medhurst 2024-06-12

This truck has been through a lot, but it's still running strong with 185,377 miles on it! I've taken good care of it, getting the transmission flushed and the oil changed regularly. It's not the fastest car on the road, but it's perfect for my daily 50-mile commute to college. Plus, it's great for driving in 4WD on snowy days and can handle icy hills with ease. And the best part? I got it for only $500 back in 2005! What a steal!

  3. Ola Stoltenberg 2024-01-22

I drive this car every day and have noticed a few issues with it. Despite being garaged for most of its 17-year life, the engine is underpowered, resulting in a city mpg of around 16-17mpg, which is not great for a 4 cyl. Unfortunately, the electronics and other non-engine parts of the car are also unreliable. In the year that I've owned it, I've had to replace the radiator, starter, and fuel pump, and the automatic transmission is also showing signs of wear and tear.

Positive 1995 Suzuki Sidekick car reviews

  1. Paris Carroll 2024-11-18

I'm glad to hear that this is your first vehicle and that you like it a lot! The small size, 4x4 and maneuverability are great features. Although the fuel economy may not be the best, it's not terrible either, with maybe 30mpg at tops. It's understandable that a 16-year-old car that has been in many other hands may have some issues, such as the starter problem and corroded wiring for the fuel pump and some of the lights. But overall, it sounds like a pretty awesome car!

  2. Keon Upton 2024-10-29

I have had my car since 1995, drove it from Texas - Colorado-Seattle, WA to Pennsylvania... with a U-haul trailer! (make sure you get a transmission cooler installed). Overall, the drive was always good, dependable, and comfortable for me....the driver. Passenger felt not enough leg/body room. Great for flea market scavenger hunts!.I have 125,000 miles on my car, and I got a great deal in the long run. Had my car for almost 8+ years.I now want to consider purchasing an Element from Honda

  3. Hailey Kovacek 2024-10-25

This car really surprised me! I was looking for a low-cost 4WD vehicle that I could use for primarily local driving with my two big dogs. But everything about it has continued to please me - from the ease of driving and handling, to the comfort and roominess of a small SUV, and the overall dependability. While it's a very basic car with standard 5-speed transmission, AM/FM/cassette, factory air, and manual windows and seats, it still ranks among the best!

  4. Al Funk 2024-10-08

The Sidekick was one of the first SUVs out there and when I was looking for my first vehicle, it really caught my eye. It had great reviews in Consumer Reports. I feel very safe driving it because it's zippy yet heavier. I've taken it off-roading with both stock and B.F. Goodrich tires and it's handled the trails beautifully. It handles better than many trucks and SUVs out there because of its awesome ground clearance and weight!

  5. Jaydon Metz 2024-09-14

Congratulations on your purchase of a 1994 Suzuki Sidekick with 81,000 miles on 04/20/09! From what you've shared, it sounds like the car is running great without any problems. While it may not be the fastest car on the highway, it can still cruise along at about 85 with ease. Although the car doesn't come with AC, power windows or locks, I believe having at least one of them is necessary. It's great to hear that you're having a remote starter, power windows, and locks installed next week for another 600.00. I'm sure it will be worth it! The interior lighting may not be the best, but it's good to know that you were able to easily solve the problem with the addition of a LED bulb for the dome and some LED foot lights for only $20.
