The Pajero nameplate derives from Leopardus pajeros, the Pampas cat. Mitsubishi marketed the SUV as the Montero in North America, Spain, and Latin America (except for Brazil and Jamaica) due to the term "pajero" being derogatory (meaning "wanker") in Spanish. In the United Kingdom, it was known as the Shogun (将軍), named after the Japanese word for "General." The model was discontinued in North America in 2006.
The Pajero, Montero, and Shogun names were used on other, mechanically unrelated models, such as the Pajero Mini kei car, the Pajero Junior and Pajero iO/Pinin mini SUVs, and the Triton-based Pajero/Montero/Shogun Sport mid-size SUVs. The Pajero is one of four models by Mitsubishi (the others being the Triton, Pajero Sport and the Pajero iO) that share Mitsubishi's heavy-duty, off-road-oriented Super-Select four-wheel-drive system as opposed to their light-duty Mitsubishi S-AWC all-wheel-drive system.
The Pajero has generated more than 3.3 million sales in its 40-year run. The name lives with the smaller Pajero Sport, which is based on the Mitsubishi Triton/L200/Strada pickup. Despite the similarity in name, the Pajero Sport shares none of the original Pajero's underpinnings and is smaller in overall size.

Powerful and sturdy. The heavy weight and wide track keep the vehicle glued to the road. Although, the rear spare tire sticks out further than the bumper, which makes it vulnerable to even a slow 5 to 10 MPH bumper bash. It is important to be cautious while driving to avoid any potential damage to the rear door. Overall, this is a great choice. However, it is worth noting that SUVs tend to be overpriced due to high customer demand. If customers were not willing to pay such high prices, then prices would be lower.

I traded my 03 Corolla for this vehicle because of their promo for nurses which availed me of the 0 APR. This has been my dream car ever since! I've been watching this vehicle slam its competitors in the rallye drakar-paris race. Not everyone can have this kind of truck separated from the usual designs of most SUVs with its masculine look and superb proven performance!

I really appreciate the fact that I can stow the rear seat under the floor and gain that extra cargo space. Additionally, I love how easy it is to expand the seating capacity. I completely disagree with the notion that the rear seat is useless. My kids absolutely love it! While I wouldn't drive cross country with an adult back there, the seats flip very easily to get the kids in and out. It's great for both highway and city driving, and it's not so big that I need a flagger to help me park. It's perfect for lugging the kids, their stuff, and their friends around. Plus, it looks great - not like a mother ship (aka minivan) or a Greyhound (giant SUV).

Since we purchased this vehicle and spent almost 40,000.00, we have been experiencing a foul 'egg-like' smell. Despite numerous tests, we have been informed that it is due to the fuel and emission on the truck, and unfortunately, there are no recalls or solutions available. We are very disappointed with Mitsubishi and would not recommend purchasing a Montero, especially the '04 model.
