2014 Volkswagen Beetle problems
The Volkswagen Beetle, officially the Volkswagen Type 1, is a small car produced by the German company Volkswagen from 1938 to 2003. It is one of the most iconic cars in automotive history, recognised for its distinctive shape. Its production period of 65 years is the longest of any single generation of automobile, and its total production of over 21.5 million is the most of any car of a single platform.
The Beetle was conceived in the early 1930s. The leader of Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler, decided there was a need for a people's car to serve Germany's new road network, the Reichsautobahn. The German engineer Ferdinand Porsche and his design team began developing and designing the car in the early 1930s. But the fundamental design concept can be attributed to Béla Barényi in 1925, predating Porsche's claims by over five years. The result was the Volkswagen Type 1 and the introduction of the Volkswagen brand. Volkswagen initially slated production for the late 1930s, but the outbreak of war in 1939 meant that production was delayed until the war had ended. The car was originally called the Volkswagen Type 1 and marketed simply as the Volkswagen, but it was not until 1968 that it was officially named the "Beetle".
Volkswagen implemented designations for the Beetle in the 1960s, including 1200, 1300, 1500, 1600, 1302 and 1303. Volkswagen introduced a series of large luxury models throughout the 1960 and 70s—comprising the Type 3, Type 4 and the K70—to supplement the Beetle, but none of these models achieved the level of success that it did. Rapidly changing consumer preferences toward front-wheel drive compact hatchbacks in Europe prompted Volkswagen's gradual shift away from rear-wheel drive, starting with the Golf in 1974. In the late 1970s and 80s, Japanese automakers began to dominate the market, which contributed to the Beetle's declining popularity.
Over its lifespan, the Beetle's design remained consistent, yet Volkswagen implemented over 78,000 incremental updates. These modifications were often subtle, involving minor alterations to its exterior, interior, colours, and lighting. Some more noteworthy changes included the introduction of new engines, models and systems, such as improved technology or comfort.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-22
- VIN: 3VWJ17AT5EM
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: On my dashboard, my passenger seat airbag started going off. I brought my VW Beetle in for its 100,000-mile maintenance check and asked about the airbag. My mechanic informed me that the passenger seat airbag was failing, and if I were driving with someone and crashed, their airbag would not deploy. They told me there was nothing I could've done to prevent this, it's just the piece itself has failed. Their advisory notes were: 'Airbag light on trouble code B12251B occupied recognition sensor mat. PART #5C5959337.' I researched if my car was eligible for a recall and it is not, however I saw that VW has a recall for Takata Driver Front Airbags.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-05
- VIN: 3VWVT7AT1EM
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The timing chain on my 2014 r-line Turbo Volkswagen Beetle with only 45,000 miles failed and subsequently destroyed the engine. Apparently this is a known issue with VW and Audi's manufactured between 2009 - 2014. There was a class action lawsuit against VW that does not apply to our situation as the claim has passed. Why has there not been a RECALL placed on this? Now we are stuck with a $16,000 piece of junk. Please put a recall on these vehicles to protect consumers like us who are at the mercy of this unscrupulous business.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-21
- VIN: 3VW5P7AT8EM
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Beginning in June 2021 and thereafter, my husband and I received notifications from Volkswagen of America of a life-threatening urgent airbag safety recall for our 2014 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible - our only vehicle. The recall is referenced on your websiteManufacturer Recall Number 69BC; NHTSA Recall Number 20V785. In response to the notifications, we have spent the past nearly 16 months seeking an appointment to have this airbag defect repaired. Initially, we were advised that a qualified technician from Honolulu would come to the Island of Hawaii (where we reside) to make the necessary repairs, as we were informed that there are no qualified dealers or technicians on our island, which has a population of more than 200,000 people, boasts many VW repair shops, and is home to a plethora of other VW drivers. Until last week, my husband’s numerous calls over the past 16 months seeking a repair appointment were met with repeated assurances that someone from VW would contact us for an appointment locally or return our call for scheduling. Having still not heard from WV about scheduling an appointment, we called yet again two weeks ago and they said they no longer send a technician from Honolulu to our island and that we would need to ship our car to Honolulu by boat at our expense to receive the necessary airbag replacement. Aside from being contrary to the numerous statements in the written notifications that the repair, the repair appointment, and alternative transportation would be “free” to us, it appears contrary to public safety protocol that we, the consumers/drivers, would need to come out of pocket an estimated $2,000 to ship and insure the car and obtain alternative transportation while our car is unavailable. While we are concerned about our own well-being as respects driving the car, we are also concerned that there may be many other VW drivers in Hawaii who are similarly situated. A detailed timeline documenting the above is attached.

- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2012-2014 Volkswagen Beetle and Beetle Convertible vehicles. The driver's side air bag inflator may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver frontal air bag, free of charge. The recall began March 19, 2021. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69BC.

The fluid seal crimp on the master cylinder may be insufficient, causing brake fluid to leak or the cylinder to come apart.
- Consequence: If there is a brake fluid leak, it can reduce braking ability, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Beck/Arnley will notify the distributors that sold the master cylinders and will work with the distributors to notify the end users. Affected master cylinders will be exchanged for a new master cylinder (part number 072-9990), free of charge. The recall began October 30, 2020. A build-up of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts may enable the key to be removed from the ignition when the transmission shift lever is not in "Park."
- Consequence: Removing the key while the shift lever is in a position other than "Park" increases the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install an additional switch and circuit board, free of charge. The recall began November 19, 2019. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 37M2.

- Consequence: A fuel leak, in the presence of an ignition source, can result in a vehicle fire.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel rails with new parts, free of charge. The recall began February 6, 2015. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 24BL. - Consequence: Vehicle occupants could be injured by falling glass. A sunroof break during vehicle operation also increases the risk of driver distraction and a resulting vehicle crash.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the sunroof, free of charge. The recall began on December 15, 2015. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 60B9.

Had a 1998, 2001 and now a 2014. Wow, I can't get enough of them! This 2014 blew me away. It's so much fun to drive, comfortable, and has a smooth ride. It's also so unique. I really hope they never stop making them.

Road test the car and ensure that all manufacturer maintenance has been completed. The car is a pleasure to drive with its turbo engine, and it feels solid and comfortable, making it perfect for a road trip. The dealer made the purchase process easy, even though the car had not yet had its second manufacturer maintenance due to its low mileage. This car is special to me and my family, as it was a surprise. I have owned many VWs in the past, but never a Beetle, and I must say, this one is very nice.
-
The 2014 turbo R-Line is an excellent car with agile handling, great power, and impressive fuel efficiency. Its stunning design, both inside and out, is reminiscent of the classic Karmin Ghia. Although it may be a bit pricey, it is definitely worth the investment. As a VW enthusiast, I am disappointed about the diesel issue, but I still highly recommend this car.
-
What's not to like about this car? It's perfect for empty nesters. With the back seats folded down, there's lots of room to haul a bunch. The car has great looks and fantastic acceleration with the 210 hp turbo. It can easily get you in trouble, so be careful! You can rock out with the Fender Audio System and enjoy the sunroof open. The sharp 19

*update since Edmunds asked* This car is still amazing! It's incredibly easy to work on if needed. I absolutely loved the first one I owned. To be honest, it can take a beating - I took it off-road, red-lined it daily, jumped the car a few times, and it still held up. I even drove 40,000 miles in one year with just basic maintenance. The only issue I ever had was with the transmission/motor mounts, which are made of aluminum and can strip out with hard use. The upside is that they are very easy to replace yourself. Hands down, this is the best car I've ever owned, and I'm buying another one.

My car has been plagued with misfires for the past two years, despite proper maintenance according to the manufacturer's recommendations. The issues started with an ignition coil, followed by another ignition coil, a fouled spark plug, and a purge valve. Unfortunately, the engine has now suffered a catastrophic failure at just over 100k miles, and the cost to replace it, along with possibly the turbo, is estimated to be between $5k-$7k. Despite this setback, I remain confident in my decision to avoid VW in the future due to their lack of reliability.

I purchased a vehicle in February, but unfortunately it has spent half of the time I have owned it at the dealership. After signing the papers, I noticed that the vehicle had two dents on the door that needed to be repaired. After getting it back, I had a problem with the defective window and had to bring it back three times for this issue. Although I was told that the vehicle was not on recall, I continuously experienced window problems. Additionally, I noticed that the paint was peeling around the bumpers. The dealership told me that the car paint was wrapped, but they still sent the vehicle to their body shop for painting. Unfortunately, the car has been back three times for correction. I have been in contact with VW Customer Care and the dealership to try and resolve these issues and receive some type of reimbursement for all of the headaches and possible diminished trade-in value.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with my new 2012 Turbo Beetle that I purchased three months ago. While I absolutely love driving the car, I have been experiencing some issues with the drivers and passenger windows. They go down without any problem, but when I try to close them, they stop and go. Unfortunately, the car has been in the dealership three times for the same repair, and I am not confident that VW will be able to correct the problem. Since the dealership has been working on the problem, I have noticed some wind noise and other issues with the windows that I did not have before. I am hoping that we can work together to find a solution to this problem, as I am considering returning the car due to this issue. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

It's really disappointing to hear about the issues you've been having with your VW. It sounds like you've had a lot of trouble with it, especially considering the amount of money you've had to spend on repairs. It's understandable that you wouldn't want to buy another VW after this experience. It's frustrating when a car that you initially loved turns out to be unreliable. I hope you're able to find a more dependable car in the future.

My 2008 beetle died, so I asked the dealership to give me any other beetle they had. They kindly gave me a red basic trim beetle from 2014. I really like the car, even though it doesn't have all the features I would like, such as navigation, turbo, and sunroof. At 5'2, it fits me perfectly! I always receive compliments on it, and people often ask me about the year. I love to decorate it for the holidays, and it brings a smile to people's faces. I find the car to be classy and a little exotic, and I don't see many other 2014 beetles driving around my city. It stands out, especially in red. While it gets decent gas mileage, I don't drive much, so I'm not the best judge. My only issue is that people always seem to want to pass me while driving, even when I'm going over the speed limit. The basic beetle doesn't have a turbo, but it has an S mode that makes it faster. However, it does have slow acceleration and struggles going uphill. Once it gets going, though, it's pretty fast. When I turn on the ignition, I'm pleased to hear a strong engine. The only mechanical issue I've had is that the windshield wiper fluid needs constant refilling. It's good in the snow, but sometimes the windows freeze shut in the winter. The frameless windows drop down to open the door, and sometimes ice or debris gets in, causing the battery to short out. However, I've learned to cover the car with a tarp to prevent ice from forming on it. Overall, I would recommend a turbo beetle, and I wouldn't recommend the diesel beetle as it drives like a little truck. I also wish the basic model came with automatic power seats.
