Common 2000 Saturn Sc problems

The 2000 Saturn SC, like any car, has its share of common problems that owners have reported over the years. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues, along with their symptoms and potential solutions:

  • Fine Wire Electrode Spark Plugs: The S-Series cars have a specific requirement for spark plugs, and using the wrong ones can lead to problems. Fine wire electrode spark plugs are not recommended, as they can cause a p0300 code and make the car run poorly. The OE spark plugs, NGK BKR5ESA-11 (DOHC) and BKR4ESA-11 (SOHC), are the best choice.
  • Throttle Position Sensor Failure: The throttle position sensor (TPS) in the 2000 Saturn SC has a higher than normal failure rate. The symptom is a high idle, usually around 1600 RPM. If shutting off and restarting the car causes the idle to drop, it's likely the TPS. The aftermarket replacements have a quality problem, so it's best to find a low-mileage junkyard replacement or order the OE part.
  • Crankshaft Position Sensor Failure: This is not a common failure, but it does occur in the 2000 Saturn SC. The sensor usually fails when the engine is hot, causing the engine to die and not restart until it cools down. The aftermarket replacements seem to work well.
  • Intake Manifold Gasket Leak: In 3rd generation (00-02) SOHC (Sx1) cars, there is a problem with the intake manifold gasket. The symptom is a sporadic or consistently high idle, along with p0300, p0301, or p0302 codes. Spraying carb cleaner around the intake, specifically the #1 runner, can verify the problem.
  • Coolant Stem Running into the Intake Manifold: In 00-02 DOHC cars, there is a coolant hose that runs into the manifold near cylinder #4. If there is a leak around this area, it's likely due to a crack in the coolant stem. A product specifically designed to fix this problem is available.
  • Broken Coil Springs: In 3rd generation (00-02) cars, the coil springs can break. If you're doing struts, it's recommended to replace the springs with OE junkyard replacements from a gen-1 or gen-2 car.
  • F6, F5, and F2 IPJB Fuse Block Segment Overheating: This issue is caused mainly by overdrawing from the 12v socket or high-power aftermarket accessories. The radio, chime module, dome light, 12v socket, and fuel pump are on this circuit. If the fuel pump stops working, it's likely due to this problem.
  • Broken Shifter Cable Bushing: The shifter cable bushing in manual transmission cars is made of plastic and can break over time. This can cause a loose or failed gear shift. A stainless steel replacement is available.
  • Worn Pressure Regulator Valve and Reverse Boost Valve in the Auto Trans Valve Body: Unfortunately, this is a common problem in the 2000 Saturn SC. The valve body in the automatic transmission can wear out, causing issues with shifting and performance. There are no drain back holes in the pistons, which can lead to oil in the valve body.

In summary, these are some of the most common problems reported by owners of the 2000 Saturn SC. Regular maintenance, such as oil changes and tune-ups, can help prevent some of these issues. However, it's essential to be aware of these potential problems and address them promptly to keep the car running smoothly and safely.

  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:PARK/NEUTRAL START INTERLOCK SWITCH
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLES, FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 114, "THEFT PROTECTION." THESE VEHICLES WERE BUILT WITH AN IMPROPERLY ADJUSTED AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE PARK LOCK CABLE ASSEMBLY. IF IMPROPERLY ADJUSTED, IT IS POSSIBLE TO SHIFT FROM THE "PARK" POSITION WITH THE IGNITION KEY REMOVED.
  • Consequence: THIS CONDITION INCREASES THE RISK OF A CRASH RESULTING FROM THE UNINTENDED MOVEMENT OF PARKED VEHICLES.
  • Remedy: SATURN IS ASKING OWNERS AND RETAILERS TO PERFORM A FUNCTIONAL CHECK OF THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE PARK LOCK CABLE ASSEMBLY OPERATION, AND IF NECESSARY, TO HAVE THE CABLE ADJUSTED. IF OWNERS ARE NOT COMFORTABLE PERFORMING THE FUNCTIONAL CHECK THEMSELVES, THEY CAN HAVE THEIR DEALER PERFORM THIS INSPECTION FOR THEM.
