The Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sport compact car that was produced by Mitsubishi in four generations from 1989 until 2011. A convertible body style was added during the 1996 model year.
The first two generations share the automobile platform and parts with the rebadged Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser captive imports. They were built during Mitsubishi Motors' close relationship with Chrysler Corporation. Their partnership was known as Diamond-Star Motors (DSM). In Japan, the first two generations were sold at a specific Japanese retail chain called Mitsubishi Car Plaza. The third, 2000–2005 generation shared a redesigned platform with the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus. In May 2005, the fourth, and final generation Eclipse was introduced, replacing the Chrysler platform used for the third generation with the PS platform.
According to Mitsubishi Motors, the Eclipse was named after an unbeaten 18th-century English racehorse that won 18 races in a row and then retired.
At the end of August 2011, the final Eclipse was manufactured and subsequently auctioned for charity.
In 2017, Mitsubishi resurrected the Eclipse name on a compact crossover vehicle, called the Eclipse Cross.

I purchased this car from a good friend who was the original owner. He always took the car to the dealer for servicing. It's a red convertible with gray interior and a black rag top. The car has a normally aspirated 2.5-liter engine and an automatic transmission. When I first bought it, I had to replace all four brakes completely, including rotors, drums, pads, slave cylinders, master cylinder, and bleeding. They worked flawlessly after that for about 6 or 7 years, and then I just had to turn the rotors and install new pads. A couple of years ago, I replaced a broken alternator belt. Then, a few months ago, I replaced the original water pump. Of course, I did the timing belt and balance shaft belt at the same time, which were still in relatively good condition. I also installed a new battery. That's all the maintenance I've had to do in the 9 years that I've owned it. Basically, just a few normal wearing parts. Oh yeah, the original owner replaced the transmission with a brand new one a couple of years before he sold it to me. He had no other issues whatsoever. It's enjoyable to drive, and something I wasn't expecting: in the summertime with the top down, it's a great chick magnet! That particular series of Eclipse has a much sexier look than any other series that was built before or after it. Pros: fun to drive, very reliable, and very affordable to own. Cons: the rag top was leaky and no good to drive in the rain. But I'm told that could have been avoided if the original owner had used a conditioner on it every few years and garaged the car more often. Also, the front end bodywork is very close to the ground. You must always tap the brakes and unload the suspension before driving over any bumps or dips and enter or exit steep driveways very slowly and at an angle. If you like this style of car and can find one that has been well maintained over the past 2 decades, I highly recommend buying it!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my '97 Spyder. I bought it used in '99 and I have to say, I absolutely love it! Even after 6 years, it still turns heads and people often stop me to ask about it. It's been a reliable car for me and I plan on driving it for many more years. Plus, it's been great in all kinds of weather, even in bad snowstorms (with snow tires, of course). Overall, I couldn't be happier with my purchase!

I bought my 98 GS-T Spyder for my 50th birthday. It's a really fun car to drive, but pushing the clutch in Atlanta traffic got old pretty quickly. Eventually, I let my teenage son drive it to school for his senior year. We had to replace the valve guide, which seems to be typical for Mits engines. Recently, the throw-out bearing seized up, so I had to cough up $900 for a new clutch kit. However, now that summer traffic is a little lighter, I'm enjoying driving it again. Unfortunately, the front speakers went awol, but I replaced them with an inexpensive set of Jensens from Auto Zone that sound great. The convertible top and brackets are now in need of repair, but I'm looking forward to getting it fixed up and back on the road soon!

I had a difficult experience with my Mitsubishi car. Unfortunately, I faced several issues with it, such as the convertible roof leaking, which caused mold on the seats and floorboards. Additionally, some parts of the car fell off, including the body kit, door handle, and plastic parts inside. The transmission also went out at barely 120K miles, and the battery and timing belt had issues. The CD player also stopped working. I would not recommend this car to anyone. However, I understand that everyone's experience may differ, and this is just my personal experience.

Hi there! I wanted to share with you my experience with my gst that I bought brand new back in July of '98. I've put 141,000 miles on it since then and I have to say, I still love the look and performance of this car. It brings a smile to my face every day I get in it! I also have an extended warranty which has been a lifesaver, covering almost $3k in repairs so far. While it may not be the most reliable car out there, it's definitely one of the most fun to drive. The back seat is a bit cramped and the trunk space is small, but overall it's been a great ride. Thanks for listening!

This car has had some issues with oil leakage from the beginning, and the top has rubbed through due to lack of support rail padding. The factory radio stopped working in the second year, and most of the interior plastic has cracked and needed replacement. The driver's side door switch panel fell inside the door one day. The front hub splines did not have anti-seize, which made them difficult to remove and caused damage. The timing belt replacement cost is over $700 every 60K miles. The car also lacks a drip edge on the roof, which causes rain to leak onto the seats when opening doors. The soft top and headliner had to be replaced after 4 years, and I went with aftermarket Kee tops and a local upholstery shop.

This car has horrible performance. However, if you're looking for excellent styling, the GS-T is a great option. It's one of the best looking cars on the road, even compared to BMWs and other luxury cars. While the rear seats may not be the most comfortable, the car is still a great choice for those who prioritize style and performance.

The Spyder is a fabulous driving machine! It feels great on the road and moves well. The only issue is that the nose hangs too low and scrapes everything. However, after 5 years with no issues, the convertible motor unfortunately died and needed to be replaced. Overall, I would still give it an A+!
