1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse spyder problems

The Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sport compact car that was produced by Mitsubishi in four generations from 1989 until 2011. A convertible body style was added during the 1996 model year.
The first two generations share the automobile platform and parts with the rebadged Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser captive imports. They were built during Mitsubishi Motors' close relationship with Chrysler Corporation. Their partnership was known as Diamond-Star Motors (DSM). In Japan, the first two generations were sold at a specific Japanese retail chain called Mitsubishi Car Plaza. The third, 2000–2005 generation shared a redesigned platform with the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus. In May 2005, the fourth, and final generation Eclipse was introduced, replacing the Chrysler platform used for the third generation with the PS platform.
According to Mitsubishi Motors, the Eclipse was named after an unbeaten 18th-century English racehorse that won 18 races in a row and then retired.
At the end of August 2011, the final Eclipse was manufactured and subsequently auctioned for charity.
In 2017, Mitsubishi resurrected the Eclipse name on a compact crossover vehicle, called the Eclipse Cross.

Hey there! Let's talk about this ride for a moment. I'm actually the one driving it, and I'm proud to say that it's not just a 'chick magnet'. I'm not your typical girl, and I love the sporty and fast feel of this car. I'm curious to see if my two toddlers would fit in it though! At 25, I finally got the car of my dreams and I couldn't be happier. To anyone who thinks they need a car to impress girls, good luck at the bar! :)

I love driving this car! It always gets compliments and people want to ride in it.

I bought the car with 57k miles on it from the second owner. I thoroughly enjoy the car, and it is quite quick. I wouldn't call it 'fast', but it does move pretty darn good!

I purchased a GS automatic transmission Spyder version with 47,000 miles in Nov 2011. It was in beautiful glossy shape inside and out, and had been kept as a garaged weekend toy by the original owner. At the time of purchase, it idled rough and would tend to die on startup. However, I was able to fix this issue by replacing the ECU with a $200 EBay replacement unit taken from an identical junker. The plastic door handle had also been previously broken off and superglued back in place, but unfortunately, it snapped off almost immediately. I replaced it with a blister-packed unit from Autozone (which says something) reinforced by an aftermarket metal reinforcement kit. I also changed out the timing belt to prevent it from breaking due to age. Overall, I have had one fun car for a year now!

I love driving this car! It has lots of power for a 4 cylinder. Although I've been in 2 car accidents with this car, it's really sturdy. Overall, I just love it!!

Hey there! I recently got my '98 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS-T and it's been a blast! I've had a lot of people asking for rides or drives since it's such a cool looking car. Although it's true that there's not much space in the backseat, it's perfect for carrying a passenger in the front seat. Plus, mine came with a loud blow-off valve which makes it even more fun to rev up! The only issue I've had so far is that I didn't get great gas mileage on my first tank, only about 160 miles on a full tank which is roughly 10 mpg. I'm not sure if it's my gas tank sensor or something else, but I'm definitely going to look into it. Overall, I'm really happy with my new ride!

This car has had some issues with oil leakage from the beginning, and the top has rubbed through due to lack of support rail padding. The factory radio stopped working in the second year, and most of the interior plastic has cracked and needed replacement. The driver's side door switch panel fell inside the door one day. The front hub splines did not have anti-seize, which made them difficult to remove and caused damage. The timing belt replacement cost is over $700 every 60K miles. The car also lacks a drip edge on the roof, which causes rain to leak onto the seats when opening doors. The soft top and headliner had to be replaced after 4 years, and I went with aftermarket Kee tops and a local upholstery shop.

This car has been a disappointment since the beginning. It burns about 1-2 quarts of oil between every 3000 mile oil change, which is not acceptable. Despite the dealership's claims that this is normal, it is not a common issue among other car owners. The service has been slow and unproductive, with many excuses. Additionally, the car is built with cheap materials and has had issues with the antenna sticking. The oil problems have even resulted in engine issues. Based on my experience and that of a friend who owns the same vehicle, I would not recommend purchasing this car or any other Mitsubishi model.

The car looks great and is fun to drive on the highway. However, I've had some issues with my top leaking whenever it rains somewhat hard, despite having it fixed three times. Additionally, my driver side window keeps coming loose, leaving a gap between the large window and smaller back window. Lastly, the car's low height makes it vulnerable to steep driveways and any type of pothole.

I purchased this car with the expectation of having a reliable ride. Unfortunately, I soon discovered that the top leaked and the transmission shifted erratically. My mechanic informed me that these cars are known for engine leaks and failures. Despite giving it a chance, I knew it was time to trade it in before the transmission exploded. Additionally, I had difficulty maintaining the oil level in the car. I would not recommend this car to anyone who needs a completely reliable vehicle or who doesn't want to get wet on their way to work or school.
