Mini Cooper clubman problems

mini logo

The Mini Clubman is a subcompact executive car engineered and manufactured by German automaker BMW and sold under the Mini marque. The first-generation Clubman was introduced in 2007, as a variant of the Mini Hatch (Hardtop in the US). A commercial version called Clubvan was added to the range in 2012. The current second-generation model has been in production since 2015 and available with front- and all-wheel drive.

History

The use of the name "Clubman" is a departure from Mini tradition. "Clubman" was originally the name given to the 1970s facelift of the classic Mini, which mostly resulted in a squared-off front end, whereas the classic Mini estates had traditionally been named "Traveller" or "Countryman". However, BMW did not initially purchase the rights to use those names, and so decided to call its larger-variant "Clubman", a name which it did own rights to.

Sketches of a new estate version of the Mini were shown at the 2000 Paris Motor Show, and a rendering of the estate concept (internally named EXT), wore the Clubman name on the licence plate. The Clubman started out in development based on the first generation Mini Hatch (R50) before changing to the second gen Hatch (R56).

Latest negative Mini Cooper clubman car reviews

  1. Diamond Zieme 2025-11-24

    Vehicle year: 2014

This car is a blast to drive around town! However, it can be a bit noisy on the highway. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with repairs. It seems like everything that could go wrong with this car has gone wrong. But the good news is that there are plenty of videos and instructions available online to help you fix these issues yourself. This is because many people have experienced similar problems and don't want to pay the high Mini Cooper repair costs. Overall, the combination of BMW engineering and British craftsmanship makes for a unique car that requires some extra care and attention.

  2. Sean Wolff 2025-11-24

    Vehicle year: 2014

I really like this car, but there are a few things that I find challenging. For example, when pulling out into traffic, especially in cold weather, there is some hesitation and the acceleration can be delayed. Additionally, I've had some issues with water leaking into the passenger side floor due to a design flaw. Despite these issues, I've owned the car for three years and have only had minor problems with the brakes. Recently, I had to fix the car due to water damage, which was frustrating. However, after some negotiation with the dealer, I was able to get the repair cost down to $1400. Overall, I still enjoy driving this car, but I hope that BMW will address these issues in future models.Mini also does not have any set pricing guides for repairs like most manufacturers have, so the dealer can charge you whatever they want. However, it's worth noting that there are many other options out there, so it's always a good idea to shop around before making a purchase. For instance, I traded in my repaired Mini for a Volvo C30 and it was a great decision. The Volvo is faster, quieter, more powerful, and about the same size. It also has better gas mileage on the highway and about the same around town. Even after factoring in the repair cost, I still got $4000 more than the Mini dealership offered. So, if you're considering a Mini, it's important to explore all your options and make an informed decision.

  3. Maximilian Kuhn 2025-10-25

    Vehicle year: 2009

The car is great to drive and provides a lot of interior space. The sales process was easy, but the dealership could have done a better job reviewing the complicated alert system for maintenance. Unfortunately, there is no 5000 mile oil change schedule, and the system can be a bit confusing. While the engines probably love the feature, it can be difficult for owners to navigate. For example, a yellow light comes on for one second at start, and the owner has to go through a complicated push-button process to access the maintenance schedule. Additionally, while the car provides a yellow light warning for the temperature, there is no similar warning for important things like low oil levels.

  4. Lavern Crona 2025-10-13

    Vehicle year: 2013

I had a fire engine red, 2010 Mini Cooper Clubman that I loved until it started having numerous mechanical issues such as timing chain, brakes, battery, and spark plugs causing the cylinders to miss fire. Additionally, I had to purchase new tires within two months of buying the car with only 25k on it, and had to fix the driver's side and sunroof's window seals. Unfortunately, I did not expect nor anticipate the cost to repair all of these issues, which amounted to around $4000. By the time it hit 42K, I had to fix all of these things. I am disappointed in Mini for charging exuberant amounts for parts and labor. It's not a reliable vehicle at all. :-(

  5. Kris Altenwerth 2025-10-11

    Vehicle year: 2008

I've had pickups of various sizes and even really enjoyed the Toyota FJ, but when I was putting a tank of fuel a day through it, I had to make a change. With the flat rear deck, I can get two dog kennels, gear, and my hunting buddy in it, and hunt all day on peanuts. The ground clearance, ride, and slippery conditions limit its access, but it sure is great to get around in. I actually got 1000kms to a tank once.

Latest positive Mini Cooper clubman car reviews

  1. Jasper Maggio 2025-11-28

    Vehicle year: 2014

If you're in the market for a car that can comfortably seat four adults while still providing a sporty driving experience, the Mini is the clear choice. We considered other small cars, but none of them could match the Mini's unique combination of style, performance, and handling. Even the base-engined Clubman with the 6-speed transmission provides more than enough power for everyday driving, and it's still plenty of fun when you want to push it a bit. The engine is responsive and predictable, making high-speed driving a breeze. Plus, the Mini's interior is surprisingly comfortable and well-appointed. Overall, the Mini is a great choice for anyone looking for a car that's more than meets the eye in terms of power, comfort, and quality.

  2. Anibal Wolf 2025-11-27

    Vehicle year: 2010

This vehicle is so much fun to drive! I recently traded in my G35 and was worried I would miss the performance, but this car has exceeded my expectations. The rear seats can be folded down to reveal a surprisingly spacious cargo area, which is even larger than many bigger cars' trunks. Additionally, there are two levels of storage under the floor in the rear. The barn doors are easy to use and much better than a swing-up door in tight spaces, making parking a breeze. I now have about 4 more feet of usable space in my garage, which is fantastic. While the back seats lack legroom, they are still very comfortable, especially with the front seats moved a bit forward. The roof rack system is also incredibly versatile and can carry just about anything I can think of, and it's much easier to reach than a typical SUV. Overall, this is a very well thought out vehicle with lots to offer, regardless of its size or any other factor.

  3. Elias Bernier 2025-11-21

    Vehicle year: 2010

Your car is stunning! I'm glad to hear that you had a great experience with your 2004 Mini and that your 2009 Clubman base model has been just as wonderful. The upgraded stereo sounds like a great investment, and I can imagine how comfortable the heated seats must be. The 'Sport Mode' sounds like a lot of fun too! It's great that you have more room in the back now, and the barn doors are a fantastic feature. With the extra space, you can even bring your adult children with you in the rear seat. And with a mileage of about 28 M.P.G., it's also quite efficient. Thank you for sharing your experience with me!

  4. Kenneth Keeling 2025-11-20

Although some people may review this car negatively, it is important to remember that cars can have problems and it does not mean that you should not consider purchasing one. Despite what others may say about the expense of BMW parts and the quality of their transmissions, I have personally had a trouble-free experience with my 2009 automatic Mini Clubman (non-S). I must admit that I enjoy driving fast, and it is true that driving a slower car fast can be incredibly fun. The Mini Clubman has a sporty feeling, especially when sport mode is engaged. It is important to not solely rely on negative reviews, as some Mini models are truly amazing.

My wife and I were on the hunt for a small, economical car with a bit of personality for a couple of weeks. We had already ruled out the Mini Cooper due to its backseat and lack of traditional storage. After looking at several Japanese cars, none of which met her requirements, we heard about the new MINI Clubman. She did an Edmund's comparison online and was intrigued, so we headed out to the dealer where she fell in love with the S model. We carefully made our choices online and ordered her dream car. After a 2 1/2 month wait, we finally picked it up and it was definitely worth it. She hasn't stopped smiling since!
