The Mercury Grand Marquis is an automobile that was produced by Mercury from the 1975 until 2011 model years. Introduced as the flagship sub-model of the Mercury Marquis in 1975, the Grand Marquis became a stand-alone model line in 1983, serving as the largest Mercury sedan. The model line served as the sedan counterpart of the Mercury Colony Park station wagon up to 1991. The fourth generation was the basis of the 2003 and 2004 Mercury Marauder.

From 1979 until 2011, the Grand Marquis shared the rear-wheel drive (RWD) Panther platform with the Ford LTD Crown Victoria (Ford Crown Victoria after 1992), and from 1980, the Lincoln Town Car. For over three decades, the Ford and Mercury sedans were functionally identical, with two of the three generations of the model line sharing the same roofline. The Grand Marquis was available as a four-door sedan for nearly its entire run; from 1988 to its final year in 2011, it was the only body style that was offered. A four-door hardtop was available from 1975 to 1978 and a two-door hardtop coupe from 1975 to 1987.

The Grand Marquis was the second-best-selling Mercury line (after the Cougar) with 2.7 million units produced; at 36 years of continuous production, the Grand Marquis was the longest-running Mercury nameplate (the Cougar, 34 years). Ford manufactured the Grand Marquis, alongside the Mercury Marquis, Mercury Marauder, Ford (LTD) Crown Victoria, and (beginning in 2007) the Lincoln Town Car, at two facilities: the St. Louis Assembly Plant in Hazelwood, Missouri (1979-1985) and the St. Thomas Assembly Plant in Southwold, Ontario, Canada (1986-2011).

Ford announced the discontinuation of the Mercury brand in 2010, but a few 2011 model-year Mercurys were made. The last Grand Marquis - and the final Mercury branded car - was produced on January 4, 2011, at St. Thomas Assembly.

Common 2008 Mercury Grand marquis problems

The 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis is known for some common problems that owners have reported. One of the most expensive issues is related to the catalytic converters, with new ones costing around $1,771. This is a significant expense, especially considering that the Grand Marquis is known for being a relatively affordable car to maintain.

Another common problem with the 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis is related to the steering system. This issue was particularly prevalent in the fourth and final generation of the car, and it was triggered by cracks in the intermediate shaft and problems with the bearings. This can be a serious safety issue, as it can affect the driver's ability to control the vehicle. Ford issued a recall in 2013 to address this problem, but earlier models may still have this issue.

Visibility is also a common problem with the Grand Marquis, particularly in relation to the windshield. Drivers have reported premature cracks in the windshield, which can be a major safety issue. This problem was caused by improper windshield retention, and there was a recall in 2006 to address it. However, even with the recall, visibility can still be an issue in the Grand Marquis due to the design of the car.

The 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis also has some specific problems that are worth mentioning. One of the most common issues is related to the intake manifold, which can crack and leak coolant behind the alternator. This can be a major problem, as it can lead to overheating and other engine issues. The average cost to fix this problem is around $1,700, and it typically occurs at around 76,000 miles.

Another common problem with the 2008 Grand Marquis is related to the headlights. Specifically, the headlights may not work properly, which can be a major safety issue. The average cost to fix this problem is around $500, and it typically occurs at around 83,000 miles.

Finally, the 2008 Grand Marquis is also known for having issues with the transmission. Transmission failure is a common problem, and it can be a major expense to fix. The average cost to fix transmission issues in the Grand Marquis is around $2,300.

In summary, the 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis is known for a number of common problems, including issues with the catalytic converters, steering system, visibility, intake manifold, headlights, and transmission. These issues can be expensive to fix, and they can affect the safety and reliability of the car. However, with proper maintenance and care, many of these issues can be avoided or minimized.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-04-17
  • VIN: 2MEFM74V68X
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE VEHICLE RECENTLY EXPERIENCED TWO SUDDEN ACCELERATION EVENTS IN TWO DAYS 15 MILES APART WHILE DECELERATING AND USING THE BRAKE IN WHAT COULD ONLY BE RELATED TO AN INTERMITTENT FAILURE OF THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL. WHILE ON VACATION DURING A 75 DEG EVENING WITH THE CAR AT OPERATING TEMPERATURE I WAS NAVIGATING SOME S TURNS HIGH ON A BLUFF AT 30MPH. WHILE COMING INTO A CORNER WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND SLOWING TO AROUND 20MPH THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. I HIT THE BRAKES HARD, TURNED AWAY FROM THE CORNER TO AVOID GOING OVER THE CLIFF AND TURNED OFF THE KEY. ALL THIS HAPPENED IN LESS THEN 5 SECONDS. THE NEXT DAY MID AFTERNOON AFTER DRIVING 20 MILES I WAS LEAVING A PARK AND TRAVELING ON A LEVEL STRAIGHT ROAD AT AROUND 25MPH. COMING UP TO A STOP SIGN I LET OFF THE GAS AND STARTED APPLYING THE BRAKE (LIKE THE DAY BEFORE) AT ABOUT 15MPH THE CAR VIOLENTLY ACCELERATED. I HIT THE BRAKES HARD AGAIN, THE REAR TIRE STARTED SPINNING AND IT PUSHED THE CAR THROUGH THE CROSSWALK PAST THE STOP SIGN AND INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC BY ABOUT 4FT BEFORE I GOT THE ENGINE SHUT OFF. ONCE AGAIN THIS ALL HAPPENED IN A MATTER OF SECONDS. AFTER A RESTART EVERYTHING WAS NORMAL AGAIN. I DROVE AROUND 250 MI TO GET HOME WITHOUT ANY FURTHER INCIDENT. TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO THESE EVENTS I HAD THE CAR AT THE DEALER TO PROGRAM A NEW TRANSPONDER KEY, RESET THE KEYLESS ENTRY AND TEST THE THROTTLE TO SEE IF THE INITIAL DEADBAND COULD BE ADJUSTED (NO ADJUSTMENT WAS DONE). AFTER THE INCIDENT I RETURNED TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM, THERE ARE NO RECALLS OR TSBS, AND THE ECM WOULD NOT DATALOG ANYTHING SINCE THERE WAS NO TROUBLE LIGHT. THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. I CONSIDER THIS UNSATISFACTORY, DEEM IT A MAJOR SAFETY DEFECT AND FORD SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO CORRECT THIS IMMEDIATELY. A QUICK SEARCH REVEALS I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS EXPERIENCE THIS.

  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners and dealers will replace the lower intermediate shaft, free of charge. The upper intermediate shaft and steering column lower bearing will be inspected to identify any damage that may have occurred as a result of lower intermediate shaft corrosion, and repaired or replaced as necessary.
