Common 2019 Mercedes-benz A220 problems
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz A220 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the issues in detail:
- Transmission Problems: Another common issue reported is transmission problems, which can cause slipping gears, difficulty shifting, or unusual noises while driving. These problems can be caused by worn or damaged components, low transmission fluid levels, or software glitches.
- Suspension Issues: The suspension system in the A220 is responsible for ensuring a smooth ride, absorbing shocks and bumps in the road, and keeping the car stable while driving. However, the suspension system can also be a common source of problems, such as clunking sounds while driving, which can cause damage to the steering rack, suspension system, and wheel bearings, requiring replacement and potentially compromising the car's stability and handling.
- Steering Rack Issue: Steering rack failure is a common issue in A-Class models built before 2015, which can cause a clunking sound while driving. This problem can cause damage to the steering rack, suspension system, and wheel bearings, requiring replacement and potentially compromising the car's stability and handling.
- Failing Camshaft: A-Class models manufactured between July 16th and September 11th, 2015, may have a failing camshaft that could break suddenly and cause an instant loss of power while also damaging other internal components.
- Limp Issues: Issues with the automatic gearbox in the Mercedes A-Class can often cause a significant loss of power, causing the car to switch into limp mode. This is often due to wear and tear on the car’s transmission system, or it could be triggered by a fault in the hydroelectric valve body.
- DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter): If the Mercedes A-Class you’re thinking of buying has been used for lots of short excursions, particularly around urban environments with restricted speed limits, then the DPF can become clogged, causing the ECU light to illuminate on the dashboard.
- Gearbox Fault: When you’re out on a test drive, ensure that all the gears are functioning properly. Some models made in 2015 suffer from a fragile camshaft which can cause loss of power.
- Oil Leaks: Leaking oil from a faulty O-Ring is a problem that is known to affect diesel versions of the A-Class manufactured in between 2012 and 2015.
- Clunking when Turning Right: Cars manufactured in 2015 are known to suffer from an issue with a bearing in the steering rack that causes a noise when turning right. If a bearing becomes damaged, the chances are you will also have to replace the rear suspension, wheel bearings, and the trailing arms too.
- ECU: One of the major problems you might face with a Mercedes A-Class is a problem with the ECU, where it turns itself off the moment it comes on – or it simply becomes unresponsive. You’ll need to replace the unit to solve this issue.
- Starting Problems: Another weak point in the Mercedes A-Class is the starter motor. This is known to fail, especially in older models, with the electronic component wearing out. Should the car take a long time to start, or not start at all – then it’s probably worth avoiding for this common fault.
Overall, these common problems with the 2019 Mercedes-Benz A220 can be frustrating and expensive for owners. Regular maintenance and check-ups can help prevent some of these issues, but it's essential to be aware of them when considering purchasing this car.
