2001 Mazda Millenia problems
The Mazda Millenia is an automobile which was manufactured by Mazda in Japan from 1993 to 2002.
The Millenia was originally planned as the second of three models for Mazda's proposed luxury brand Amati. As the company's dwindling finances caused by the onslaught of the "bubble economy" prevented the launch of the Amati brand, the Millenia was released in the autumn of 1993 in Europe as the Mazda Xedos 9 and in Japan and Australia as the Eunos 800. The car was launched in North America in 1995 as the Mazda Millenia and in July 1997 the Japanese market Eunos 800 was also renamed to Mazda Millenia as Mazda discontinued the Eunos brand. There was no model link to the other Mazda marque, Ẽfini.
Having been developed for a separate market from typical Mazda customers, the Millenia boasted myriad finer details. It was engineered to far greater levels of perceived quality than existing Mazda cars, such as interior plastic quality, panel gap and thicker paint coating. The Millenia/Eunos 800/Xedos 9 was assembled along with the smaller Eunos 500/Mazda Xedos 6 in a new production line, presumably set up for Amati cars.
The Millenia does not have a direct predecessor or replacement in the Mazda product line, and production ceased with the introduction of the Mazda6 in 2002, itself a replacement for the 626. It appears to have received a brand-new platform, although the multi-link suspension at both ends strongly resembled that of the 1991 Mazda Sentia, with minor changes such as replacing the lower I-arm with an A-arm for front wheel drive. It was the only production car in the world to employ a Miller cycle engine (The current Demio/Mazda2 features Miller Cycle on one of its engines). Yaw-sensitive four-wheel steering was available as an option in Japan; Mazda claimed that with this feature, the Millenia was capable of passing the elk test at speeds comparable to the BMW 850i and Nissan 300ZX.
The 1997 Japanese market name change from Eunos 800 to Mazda Millenia was accompanied by a significant facelift that included some cost-saving measures. For instance, the hood was downgraded from aluminum to steel. The Millenia was again facelifted for the 2001 model year.

Common 2001 Mazda Millenia problems
The Mazda Millenia, produced from 1995 to 2002, is known for its performance and features. However, some common problems have been reported by owners over the years.
Engine problems are a frequent issue, particularly with the supercharged V6 engine. Oil leaks are a common problem, which can be caused by a variety of factors such as worn gaskets or seals. The supercharger itself can also fail, which can be a costly repair. Additionally, issues with the timing belt have been reported, which can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly.
Transmission problems are another common issue with the Mazda Millenia. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission, including slipping and shifting problems. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, such as worn or damaged transmission components or low transmission fluid levels. Transmission problems can be particularly costly to repair, so it's important to address them promptly.
Electrical problems have also been reported by some Mazda Millenia owners. These issues can range from problems with the alternator or battery to more complex issues with the car's electrical system. Electrical problems can be difficult to diagnose and repair, so it's important to have a qualified mechanic inspect the car if you experience any electrical issues.
Suspension problems have also been reported by some Mazda Millenia owners. These issues can be caused by worn or damaged suspension components, such as struts or shocks. Suspension problems can affect the car's handling and ride quality, so it's important to address them promptly.
Rust is another common issue with the Mazda Millenia, particularly on the rear quarter panels. Rust can be caused by a variety of factors, such as exposure to road salt or moisture. Rust can be difficult to repair, so it's important to address it promptly if you notice any signs of rust on your car.
It's important to note that not all Mazda Millenias will have these issues, and many owners have reported no problems at all. However, it's always a good idea to have a used car inspected by a mechanic before making a purchase to identify any potential issues. Additionally, regular maintenance and prompt repairs can help prevent problems from developing or becoming more serious.
What happened to the Mazda Millenia?
Unfortunately, the Mazda Millenia wasn't particularly popular and faded into obscurity after being discontinued in 2002. Mazda never used the KJ-ZEM in any of its other models, as it was relatively complex and expensive to produce. This makes it among the rarest of Mazda's engines today.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-11-12
- VIN: JM1TA222X11
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: THE TILT-STEERING MOTOR FAILED, LEAVING THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED IN THE EXTREME-UP ("BUS-DRIVER") POSITION. NO WARNING; I JUST PUT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION AND THE WHEEL DID NOT COME DOWN (IT AUTOMATICALLY SWINGS OUT OF THE WAY WHEN YOU TAKE THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION). THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE, ALTHOUGH THE STEERING WHEEL TECHNICALLY STILL WORKS, IN ORDER TO DRIVE ONE HAS TO ELEVATE THE SEAT IN THE VERTICAL PLANE TO MAXIMUM AND THE STEERING WHEEL IS LIKE THAT OF A BUS. THE SAFETY ISSUE IS THAT, WERE ONE TO BE INVOLVED IN A CRASH IN SUCH A POSITION, THE AIRBAG WOULD BE AIMED AT ONE'S CHIN, PROBABLY RESULTING IN A BROKEN NECK, AND THE "BOTTOM" OF THE STEERING WHEEL IS POINTED DIRECTLY AT THE MIDDLE OF ONE'S CHEST, BELOW THE STERNUM, PROBABLY RESULTING IN MASSIVE INTERNAL INJURIES OR, EASILY, IN DEATH.*AK
STEERING PROBLEM

NO WARNING; I JUST PUT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION AND THE WHEEL DID NOT COME DOWN (IT AUTOMATICALLY SWINGS UP OUT OF THE WAY WHEN YOU TAKE THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION). THE PREVIOUS FAILURE (NOV 12, 2004) WAS DEEMED TO BE A FAILED MOTOR; THE MOTOR WAS REPLACED AT A COST TO ME OF $363.33. THIS FAILURE IS NOW DEEMED TO BE A FAILURE OF THE STEERING COLUMN ITSELF - THIS WILL COST ME ~$1600!!!!*AK

WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-10-18
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS, THE INSIDE OF THE 17" LOW PROFILE WHEELS OF MY 2001 MAZDA MILLENIA S HAVE CORRODED AND ALL FOUR TIRES LOSE MOST OF THEIR AIR. I HAVE COMPLAINED TO MAZDA ABOUT THIS, AND HAVE TAKEN IT IN ON TWO OCCASIONS, WAITED FOR HOURS AND TOLD THEY NEEDED IT AT A LATER TIME TO REMOVE THE WHEELS AND TIRES AND TAKE PICTURES OF THEM TO FORWARD TO MAZDA. I TOOK TWO HALF DAYS OFF WORK AND WAITED EACH TIME. WE PUT AIR IN THE TIRES EVERY TWO DAYS. THE WHEELS HAVE BEEN REMOVED AND THE CORROSION POLISHED OFF SIX TIMES NOW - 2X IN THE LAST 2 WEEKS. THE TIRE SHOPS SAY THIS IS COMMON FOR THESE WHEELS. THE CAR ONLY HAS 43,000 MILES ON IT AND IS MAZDA'S FLAGSHIP FROM 2001. I AM SURE THAT THIS PROBLEM EXISTS FOR A NUMBER OF MILLENIAS ON THE ROAD AND OTHER MANUFACTURERS AS WELL. THE LOW TIRES ARE SURE TO HAVE CAUSED SOME ACCIDENTS.*AK
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-08-15
- VIN: 1YVGF22C015
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: PARKED THE CAR IN THE GROCERY STORE PARKING LOT AND WHEN RETURNING TO THE CAR TO LEAVE, STARTED THE CAR, BACKED OUT OF THE PARKING SPOT AND THEN PROCEEDED TO PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE AND LEAVE. WHEN I DID, THE CAR KEPT GOING IN REVERSE. I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL, PARK, 2ND AND OVERDRIVE ALL WHICH THE CAR KEPT GOING IN REVERSE. FORTUNATELY, THE CAR BEHIND ME WAS NOT CLOSE ENOUGH NOR WERE THERE PEOPLE SURROUNDING THE CAR IMMEDIATELY THAT I COULD HAVE HIT BECAUSE OF THE PROBLEM WITH THE CAR. I LET THE CAR ROLL BACK IN TO A SPOT AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. WHEN I DID THE CAR WOULD NOT START AT ALL. I LEFT THE CAR THERE UNTIL I GOT THE CAR TOWED THE NEXT MORNING. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER SAID IT WAS VERY FORTUNATE THAT THE CAR DID NOT ROLL AWAY OR SOMEONE STOLE IT BECAUSE WHILE IT WAS IN PARK, THE CAR COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN PUSHED AS HE DEMONSTRATED TO ME AND THE MECHANIC. THIS IS A 2001 CAR AND I FEEL LIKE THIS IS A SAFETY DEFECT. I HATE TO THINK ABOUT THE POSSIBLITY THAT I COULD HAVE STARTED TO DRIVE FORWARD ONLY TO HAVE THE CAR GO IN REVERSE AND HIT A PERSON OR CHILD. THIS FAULTY DEFECTY SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED BEFORE SOMEONE OR SOMETHING DOES GET HURT. SINCE THEN, THE MECHANICE HAS FIXED IT AND WAS A FAULTY SHIFT CABLE THAT HE REPLACED AND FOR ME VERY COSTLY BUT NOT AS COSTLY AS THE INJURY TO SOMEONE IF THIS CAR WOULD HAVE BACKED IN TO THEM.*AK

SHE, TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, AND EACH TIME, IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION. *AK
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-07-12

CONSUMER HAS TRIED SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO HAVE MAZDA REPAIR THE DEFECT BUT TO NO AVAIL. ON OCCASSIONS WHEN IT IS SUNNY OUTSIDE OR AT NIGHT WHEN THE OVER HEAD FLOODLIGHTS ARE ON, THE REFLECTION FROM THE REAR VIEW MIRROR RENDERS CONSUMER UNABLE TO SEE WHEN BACKING OUT. SEVERAL TIMES CONSUMER HAS EXPERIENCED CLOSE CALLS RANGING FROM ALMOST BACKING OVER PEDESTRIANS TO EVEN BUMPING ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE GLARE ON THE MIRROR POSES A SAFETY HAZARD FOR ALL INVOLVED. *JG

Price and luxury design and materials make this automobile worthwhile. The beautiful aesthetics and long list of features are sure to impress. You'll be amazed at the amount of power you can get from just a 2.3L engine, and there are plenty of standard options to choose from.

I've owned 2 Mazda 626s and 2 Mazda MPVs. My last 626 was totaled, so I decided to move up to a Millenia. I went and test drove one and knew right away it was the car I wanted. I found an 'S' with the Miller-cycle engine. What a great engine! It's smooth and quiet, yet very responsive. This car has a perfect balance between a smooth, luxurious ride and road feel. Everything about the car exudes quality. The fit and finish are outstanding. The Miller-cycle engine should be an option for all of their vehicles that have V-6 engines. I've owned many Japanese and American cars, but in my opinion, for price and quality, Mazda beats them all.

If you're considering purchasing a new Millenia S for $32,905, I would recommend spending a bit more and looking into an Acura or Lexus. However, I was able to purchase mine for $26,500, which I believe was a great value.
