Mazda Millenia problems

The Mazda Millenia is an automobile which was manufactured by Mazda in Japan from 1993 to 2002.

The Millenia was originally planned as the second of three models for Mazda's proposed luxury brand Amati. As the company's dwindling finances caused by the onslaught of the "bubble economy" prevented the launch of the Amati brand, the Millenia was released in the autumn of 1993 in Europe as the Mazda Xedos 9 and in Japan and Australia as the Eunos 800. The car was launched in North America in 1995 as the Mazda Millenia and in July 1997 the Japanese market Eunos 800 was also renamed to Mazda Millenia as Mazda discontinued the Eunos brand. There was no model link to the other Mazda marque, Ẽfini.

Having been developed for a separate market from typical Mazda customers, the Millenia boasted myriad finer details. It was engineered to far greater levels of perceived quality than existing Mazda cars, such as interior plastic quality, panel gap and thicker paint coating. The Millenia/Eunos 800/Xedos 9 was assembled along with the smaller Eunos 500/Mazda Xedos 6 in a new production line, presumably set up for Amati cars.

The Millenia does not have a direct predecessor or replacement in the Mazda product line, and production ceased with the introduction of the Mazda6 in 2002, itself a replacement for the 626. It appears to have received a brand-new platform, although the multi-link suspension at both ends strongly resembled that of the 1991 Mazda Sentia, with minor changes such as replacing the lower I-arm with an A-arm for front wheel drive. It was the only production car in the world to employ a Miller cycle engine (The current Demio/Mazda2 features Miller Cycle on one of its engines). Yaw-sensitive four-wheel steering was available as an option in Japan; Mazda claimed that with this feature, the Millenia was capable of passing the elk test at speeds comparable to the BMW 850i and Nissan 300ZX.

The 1997 Japanese market name change from Eunos 800 to Mazda Millenia was accompanied by a significant facelift that included some cost-saving measures. For instance, the hood was downgraded from aluminum to steel. The Millenia was again facelifted for the 2001 model year.

Common Mazda Millenia problems

The Mazda Millenia, a mid-size luxury car produced from 1995 to 2002, has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. These issues include engine problems, transmission problems, electrical problems, suspension problems, and rust.

Engine problems are one of the most frequently reported issues with the Mazda Millenia, particularly with the supercharged V6 engine. Some owners have reported oil leaks, failure of the supercharger, and issues with the timing belt. These problems can be costly to repair and may require the replacement of major engine components.

Transmission problems are another common issue with the Mazda Millenia. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission, including slipping and shifting problems. These issues can also be expensive to repair and may require the replacement of the transmission.

Electrical problems have also been reported by some Mazda Millenia owners. These issues include problems with the alternator or battery, which can cause the car to have difficulty starting or running.

Suspension problems are another common issue with the Mazda Millenia. Some owners have reported issues with the struts and shocks, which can affect the car's ride and handling.

Rust is also a problem with the Mazda Millenia, particularly on the rear quarter panels. This can affect the car's appearance and may require the replacement of affected body panels.

It's important to note that not all Mazda Millenias will have these issues, and many owners have reported no problems at all. However, it's always a good idea to have a used car inspected by a mechanic before making a purchase to identify any potential issues. Additionally, regular maintenance and prompt repairs can help prevent problems from developing or becoming more serious.

Mazda Millenia

Why did they stop making Mazda Millenia?

In the end, buyers were being asked to sacrifice power and performance for only a slight increase in efficiency. Indeed, sales were not what Mazda hoped for. I pulled up sales figures on Automotive News, and in 2001, the year it was axed, Mazda sold 19,849 Millenias.

What kind of engine is in the Mazda Millenia?

Production for the Millenia ended in 2002, without replacement. Engines: 2.5 L KL-DE V6. 2.3 L KJ-ZEM V6 (Miller cycle) - 217 bhp (162 kW)

How much does a Mazda Millenia cost?

Prices for a used Mazda Millenia range from a high of $17,700 to a low of $3,600. Remember that mileage and condition can affect price.

Is the 2002 Mazda Millenia supercharged?

The Millenia S model, our preference, is powered by the still rather trick 2.3 liter, DOHC, 24-valve supercharged Miller-cycle V6 which puts out 210 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque. This smooth and economical powerplant took us to 60 in 7.7 seconds, and on through the quarter mile in 15.9 seconds at 90 MPH.

WE PURCHASED THE MAZDA FROM UNIVERSITY FORD/MAZDA IN ATHENS, GA IN LATE 1999. IT WAS A NEW VEHICLE WITHOUT PRIOR TITLE OWNERSHIP. I DO NOT REMEMBER THE MILEAGE ON THE AUTO; IT MAY HAVE BEEN 50 TO 100 MILES. WHENEVER WE USE THE CRUISE CONTROL, THE MAZDA ACCELERATES. AT FIRST, WE DID NOT NOTICE THE PROBLEM. IT WAS NOT UNTIL WE WERE PULLED OVER BY A POLICE OFFICER, TELLING US THAT WE WERE DRIVING MORE THAN TEN (10) MILES FASTER THAN WHERE THE CRUISE CONTROL HAD BEEN SET. WE IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE AUTO BACK TO THE DEALER AND REPORTED THE PROBLEM. THEY CLAIMED THERE WAS NO PROBLEM AND RETURNED THE AUTO TO US. DURING THE NEXT YEARS, WE HAVE TAKEN THE MAZDA TO VARIOUS DEALERS THROUGHOUT THE NORTH GEORGIA AREA AND ALL CLAIM THERE IS NO PROBLEM. SEVERAL YEARS AGO, I RAN A CHECK ON EDMUNDS.COM AND FOUND A TECHNICAL BULLETIN ISSUED BY MAZDA TO ITS DEALERS REPORTING THE PROBLEM BUT NOT ALLOWING IT TO BE REPAIRED AT THE COMPANY'S EXPENSE. When I purchased this car, it was from a teenager who didn't take very good care of it. I had to put in about $1800 worth of work after buying it for $2100 with 98,000 miles on it. However, after that, the car never let me down. I never had any doubts about its reliability. The only thing that concerned me was that the exhaust would get so hot that it was burning a hole in my trunk. But I never worried about it breaking down on me. I used to take my young niece (3 years old) with me, and she always enjoyed the ride. The car is not very spacious for tall people, but if you're 5'10 or under, it's more than enough. It has a nice trunk space, compartments, and always provides a great ride. It served me well for a few years, and in fact, it saved my life. I was rear-ended in September, and since the car is longer, most of the impact was absorbed by the back. Although my airbags didn't deploy, I only suffered a concussion. The other driver was probably going over 50 mph. My advice to you is to treat this car kindly, and it will do the same for you.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my recent experience with cars. I've been a proud owner of a Lexus for the past 5 years, but I decided to switch things up to lower my car payments. I've been driving the Millinea for a couple of weeks now and I have some thoughts to share. First off, the styling of the car is really nice both inside and out. I especially like the dashboard, it's laid out really well. The ride is also super quiet and smooth, which is great. However, I did notice that the engine seems to hesitate a bit when you first step on the gas, which can be a bit annoying. Additionally, the latch covers in the back for the child safety seats keep popping open, which is a bit frustrating. All in all, if I could do it all over again, I would probably opt for an Acura or go back to another Lexus. Thanks for listening to my thoughts!

My wife bought our 1999 Mazda Millenia in 2001 used for $16,500 before we were married. The trans. had to be replaced at 60K miles, and we continue to be disappointed with the way the thing takes off. The trans. is so extremely jerky. Starting off in first gear even the slightest touch of the gas pedal sends it screaming forward. Especially in traffic when it's stop and go. There is absolutely no easing forward with this trans. Another problem I have with this car is the leg-room. We drive from TN to LA several times a year to visit family, and my knees are in my chest all the time it seems. I'm only 6' by the way.

This was my first car and I loved it when I first bought it. The style is slick and unique. However, the maintenance can be quite expensive and the check engine light seems to come on for every little thing. It can be a challenge to get the car to pass inspection in New York! Overall, it's a sensitive car that requires a bit of extra care and attention.

  5. Trever Johnston 2025-05-29

    Vehicle year: 1997

The car was in great condition when it was bought, but unfortunately, it experienced a number of issues with both the engine (radiator, thermostat, alternator, oil leaks, transmission) and interior features (poor quality seats, dash, cargo nets, and cup holders). It's a shame that a top-of-the-line car like this one had so many problems. It required a significant amount of money to be spent on repairs.

The 95L 2.5 liter with 93K miles, 76K of which are mine, is a great road car. It may be underpowered, but it has spacious and comfortable seats, and a well-designed control layout. Recently, I had some work done on it, including a timing belt replacement for the first time, as well as camseals and related PS/WP and AC/Altbelts at 92K for $384. Apart from routine maintenance, I had to replace the tires, spark plug wires, and valve cover gaskets ($330) at 60K. Overall, this 95 has been a reliable and trustworthy car for me.

Congratulations on your first car! It sounds like you had quite the adventure with it. Despite a few quirks, it served you well and was very reliable. You took great care of it by replacing the radiator, front wheel bearings, and brake pads and disks. It's amazing that you were able to drive it for so long, all the way until it reached 200000 miles. Thank you for sharing your story!

I've owned my Mazda Millenia for about 5 years now and it's been a great experience. I bought it almost new with 11K miles and it's still going strong with only routine checkups and occasional wear and tear maintenance. I absolutely love the color of my car, Sand Mica with Oak interior, and the beautiful faux wood in-lay on the center console. Even after all this time, I still get compliments on my vehicle. It's also great that you don't see many of them on the highway, so when people do see them, it feels exclusive. Mazda did a fantastic job on the exterior; the fit and finish are superb and the attention to detail is perfect.

I love Mazda! It's a great car and easy to add additional horsepower. I currently have 280 HP in my car and it can even beat a Mustang!
