The Subaru Outback is an automotive nameplate used by the Japanese automaker Subaru for two different SUV-themed vehicles: a Legacy-derived crossover station wagon, the Outback (1994–present, also sold as Legacy Outback (Japanese: スバル・レガシィアウトバック, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi Autobakku) in some markets), and an Impreza-derived off-road themed hatchback, the Outback Sport (1994–2011).

History
The original Outback station wagon was derived from the wagon variant of the second-generation Subaru Legacy. The first-generation Legacy, which made its debut in 1989, did not receive the cosmetic and suspension modifications to create an Outback version, although Subaru offered an Outdoor option package for the 1994 model year Legacy L all-wheel drive model, which added a compressed air strut height adjustable suspension, a luggage rack, a skidplate, and mud flaps.
Earlier, a raised-roof "Touring Wagon" variant had been offered on the preceding Subaru Leone for the 1988 and 1989 model years. Subaru also sold a raised-roof variant (chassis code BF) of the first-generation Legacy wagon outside the United States. North American Legacy wagons were only offered as the flat-roof variant (chassis code BJ) until a special "GT" model was marketed for the 1994 model year.
The second-generation Legacy wagon became the first generation of the Outback crossover series, called the "Legacy Grand Wagon" in Japan in 1995, and the "Legacy Outback" in most other markets. Compared to the existing Legacy wagon, the "Outback" variant added partial protective plastic side body cladding for off-road conditions, used a raised roof, and would later raise the suspension to provide additional ground clearance. It was introduced at the 1994 New York Auto Show. Aside from other small differences in trim, the Outback shares almost all of its components with the Legacy donor model.
When launched in Australia in 1996, the name "Legacy Outback" was shortened to "Outback", followed in other markets afterwards. In the United States, Subaru also retailed the Legacy SUS sedan between the 1997 and 2007 model years, with similar modifications to distinguish it from the equivalent Legacy model sedan. The Impreza Outback Sport was introduced at the 1996 New York Auto Show, but for the 1997 model year, the donor model names were dropped, and the cars were known as the "Outback" and "Outback Sport".

- Summary: Throttle fails to respond for a brief but serious amount of time. When pulling into traffic, instead of accelerating the engine remains at an idle and the car moves forward slowly. I push on the throttle trying to make it go. Then it takes hold and the car leaps forward. Safety: Normal power is delayed as the car moves into traffic. Oncoming traffic must slow to prevent an accident. The dealer where I purchased the car, Santa Monica, CA, tried to find error codes. Also removed the throttle valve to check that it wasn't somehow stuck. They drove the car briefly. They say they've done all they can. No warning lamps, messages, codes stored in the computer. Note that the throttle pedal signals the computer to work the engine throttle valve (so I'm told). Problem occurs about once a month. First time was when I took posession at the dealer's. I requested to recind my purchase but, because I didn't by the cancellation option ($250), they refused.

The indication that I get is when I start driving I get a beeping noise. I reset the hatch by pressing the hatch button manually. This is the 2nd time this has happened to me in the last month and the 3rd time in the past 5 months this year. April 19th I had to jump my car because the battery was dead. I took it to a mechanic and they checked the battery and they advised the battery is fine. It happened again on May 11th, where I put something in the trunk, I closed the trunk it was closed no indication that it was not. The car drove fine. I started the car and again the battery hesitation, when I started driving I received the same beeping, I had to get out the car and manually open the hatch to reset it. The computer needs to be adjusted to detect when the lift gate is actually closed. Having the lift gate not closed but no indication for the drive is a safety problem.

- Summary: On [XXX], around noon, my wife and I were driving south on [XXX] in our 2017 Subaru Outback, at approximately 70 mph. It was a clear and sunny day. We were just north of the [XXX] exit (in Port St. Lucie, Florida) in the far right-hand lane when our vehicle violently jolted. It felt like we were being dragged from behind, although we were still moving forward at a reduced speed. It was making a terrible sound (tires screeching), and you could smell rubber burning. This sensation felt similar to an airplane’s hard landing on the tarmac. My initial thought was that someone hit us from behind, while my wife thought we may have blown a tire. I glanced at the instrument panel and noticed that the word “Eye Sight” was displayed. As we were coming to complete stop, we realized cars were speeding to the left and right of our car to avoid hitting us. We both immediately realized that we were in a very dangerous situation and at risk of being hit from oncoming traffic. My wife put the hazard lights on while I was attempting to drive the car off the road. However, the car would not move forward even though the engine was running, and it was in gear (drive). Several good Samaritans stopped to assist us in trying to move the car off [XXX]. However, the car would not move because all four wheels were locked. My wife called 911 and Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) and Road Ranger arrived approximately twenty minutes later. They were unable to assist us with moving the car off the road. We called a tow truck company (Apex Towing) to move the car because all four tires were locked and had to be lifted off the road. Our car was towed to a safe location and we able to call AAA to have the car towed to Dyer Subaru in Vero Beach, Florida. As time has passed, we realize that our car was a stationary object on a heavily traveled interstate. I had the car, 2017 outback Subaru towed to the dealer and was told there are no recalls, but saw many problems listed on the NHTSA website. It was terrifying and still shakes me up when I think what could have happened. Subaru told me this was the first they have seen this and that I do not have the extended warranty and I would be held for the cost. I am beyond upset. We finally had a chance to get it fixed in January, and it turned out the catalytic converter manifold had rusted through. The car is not that old, and is driven primarily in central North Carolina where road salt is not a major concern. An internet search reveals many other drivers with the same issue - metal corrosion at the "accordion" part of the exhaust pipe. I have no idea how much engine exhaust my family and I were exposed to, but it was significant enough to cause headaches and exhaustion.

- Summary: Vehicle is equipped with a Starlink system and this system no longer functions due to the Subaru Data Communication Module (DCM) that only has a 3G connection module system, since 3G was fazed out the Starlink doesn't function. Since the DCM is always on the car try's to connect to a cell tower that doesn't exist, the car continues to try and connect and eventually runs the battery completely dead leaving the owner stranded. I had to have the battery replaced on 9/15/23. I have contacted Subaru of America by email with no response as of this date.

- Summary: Noticed rust bubble in the inner and outer paint of the driver front door pillar December 2021. Noticed it was getting substantially worse and reported it to Subaru July 2022. They said there was no pinhole in the rust and would not be covered. Showed it to Subaru again in 2023, and said it is not covered under their 5 year rust plan. It is now January 2024, and the paint as well as base metal is peeling from the door. It is clear there is damage to the base metal, and represents a weakened location in the door/frame/pillar structure should there be a rollover accident. Bought this car for its safety reputation. Online forums have noted that Subaru has replaced doors for this same premature failure of the door in the same location on multiple vehicles.

- Summary: 11/06/23: During a routine oil change at the dealer a multipoint vehicle inspection was conducted. The inspection revealed an upper oil pan leak. The repair involved removing the engine and replacing various components (gasket, O-Rings and etc.). The vehicle was well maintained and had only 43,492 miles on it. The oil leak potentially could have caused an engine compartment fire (my opinion). Subaru paid $1,500 of the repair. A vehicle with only 43,492 should not have this type of issue. There was also a transmission leak detected that was covered by extended warranty. I was unable to upload any files on your system.

- Consequence: If the knee guard is not properly attached and the driver is not wearing a seatbelt, the knee guard may not be able to properly restrain the driver's lower body in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the knee guard welding on each vehicle's steering beam, replacing the beam as necessary, free of charge. - Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2017 Outback vehicles manufactured June 20, 2016, to June 23, 2016. The affected vehicles may have improperly tightened attaching bolts for the front left and right brake calipers, wheel hubs, and the right stabilizer clamp.
- Consequence: If any of the front brake caliper, wheel hub or stabilizer clamp attaching bolts loosen or detach, the related components would also become loose and may detach possibly making the vehicle unstable and reducing the braking capability. These conditions would increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Subaru has notified owners, and dealers will inspect the bolts for proper torque, and replace any loose bolts, free of charge. The recall began on August 8, 2016. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783. Subaru's number for this recall is WTE-66.

- Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Legacy and Outback vehicles manufactured February 29, 2016, to May 6, 2016. The steering column on the affected vehicles may have been improperly machined, and as a result, turning the steering wheel may have no effect on the direction of the wheels.
- Consequence: The loss of steering ability would increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the lot number on the steering column, replacing the steering column, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began May 13, 2016. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783 or by visiting http://www.wtd65.service-campaign.com. Subaru's number for this recall is WTD-65. Note: Until the vehicles have been inspected, owners are advised not to drive their vehicles.

We really like our first Outback (Limited 2.5i), but we hope Subaru can work out a few bugs. If we could have the black interior and if Starlink is improved, we would definitely buy it again. Unfortunately, the Lapis Blue Pearl color is only available with the Warm Ivory Leather interior which shows dirt and scuffs. At about 4900 miles, the interior started showing wear, even though I purchased the protection package. However, the interior of the car is very roomy and the backseat legroom is comfortable. There is a fold-down armrest in the back with two cup holders, and each door has a water bottle holder compartment. The display panel is well-designed and you can change viewing options with a tap on a steering wheel lever. Seats have great adjustment and you can easily store settings for 2 drivers. The steering wheel is also adjustable. Dual Zone temperature control allows the driver and passenger to obtain their comfort level. The rear seats split 60/40 and fold flat easily (no removing a headrest). You can even pull levers in the trunk to fold them flat while loading cargo. The manuals are informative and important to read for several of the features. Although the glove compartment is small and barely holds all of the manuals for the car, the storage compartment between the driver and front passenger is okay in size but was larger in my Vibe. There is also a compartment in the overhead for sunglasses, but it is much too small for mine. Almost kid-sized. A great feature for our northern climate is heated front AND rear seats. Very nice and warm. Unfortunately, the 120 Volt Power Outlet (standard plug-in) is not available with Eyesight, but it has 2 USB ports. Charging a cell phone takes forever (8% an hour), so I purchased a power adapter, but it is bulky to store in the vehicle.The Transmission Paddle Shifters on the steering column allow you to manually shift the car. Although I miss a manual transmission, this feature allows you to manually control the process if you need it, for example, in the mountains. It would be great if it allowed you to shift from the console too. The gas mileage has been less than listed, averaging 23.5 for a 50/50 mix of city and highway. Even our city driving in a rural area should boost the mileage, but it hasn't done so. However, we did get our best mileage of 25.5 once. The acceleration is sluggish, and for this price range, it should be faster and smoother. My Vibe GT was much better at acceleration and was only 180hp compared to the Outback 175hp. On the bright side, the upgraded stereo system is great, and I like the option to store channels seamlessly in one list from FM/AM radio, Pandora, Sirius XM, etc. My biggest complaint is the mapping system is very obsolete. Restaurants that have been closed for over 2 years appear, streets that were built over 5 years ago don't show up, etc. Subaru has an update available now, but you need to have a code if you want the free update. Then you have to take out the micro SD card and place it into a computer to update the data and then replace it in the car. There are no instructions for this, and it took a lot of research to get that far. However, I ended up purchasing the 3-year updates, and Subaru reimbursed me. Unfortunately, it didn't make any difference, and the MSP area is not being updated. In the Starlink system, you also have access to vehicle settings, and you can change some vehicle responses, for example, when you push the trunk button in the rear, it can unlock all of the doors for you or just the driver's door. Most vehicles lock the car doors when you either start the engine or shift the car into drive, but the Outback doesn't have this option. Starlink also reads text messages from Android and Apple phones, which is a great feature.When sending a series of text messages, it may only display the last text and unfortunately, there is no way to voice reply. However, you can use pre-canned text messages, although it is unclear if they can be customized. Making a call is easy, simply push a button on the steering column and request to call a specific contact. Unfortunately, you cannot ask to call a nearby business if the number is not stored in your cell phone contacts. It would be great if the system could look up numbers for nearby businesses and dial them. On a positive note, our vehicle insurance cost less than insuring our old Vibe and the safety features, such as High Beam Assist and Blind Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, are wonderful. The Blind-Spot Detection system uses radar sensors to warn you with a visual indicator in each side mirror if it senses a vehicle in your blind spots. Rear Cross-Traffic Alert can help warn you of traffic approaching from the side.

After 10 years in an Acura MDX, we decided to switch to this car. Our kids are older now, and we wanted better gas mileage and the latest safety features. We are mostly pleased with our decision, but there are a few things to consider. First, make sure to test drive all the trim levels. We found that the cloth version was just as comfortable as the leather one, and the smaller wheels made for a smoother ride. Also, the tan leather we got is already turning gray, so it's not the best material. Second, the steering wheel can get really cold, especially if you live somewhere cold. The touring model has a heated steering wheel, which would be a nice feature to have. Third, the Subaru is simply awesome in the elements, and with the Eyesight system, we feel really safe in this vehicle. It sits higher than the old, car-sized Outbacks, and as high as a lot of crossover SUV's, so it's a great option if you're downsizing from an SUV. We would definitely buy this car again, maybe in either the touring or the cloth version. We are also considering buying the new Impreza as a second car to get the Eyesight system in both of our vehicles. Once you have that, you won't want to go without it. Good luck in your car shopping!

I was looking for a vehicle that met several criteria: good visibility, off-road capabilities, comfortable for long highway drives, excellent gas mileage, high safety ratings, great resale value, and low maintenance costs. Living in the west, I found that most Subaru vehicles are well-suited to the terrain and have no problem driving up steep passes or passing other cars. I have the 2.5i prez engine, which some have criticized for its lackluster performance. While it's not a Ferrari, I find that the engine meets all my needs while delivering great fuel economy in high-altitude environments. The all-wheel-drive system works exceptionally well. Overall, I highly recommend this vehicle for anyone who prioritizes value and safety over speed.

This is a great car! It has super acceleration and tons of safety features. I love the lane assist, adaptive cruise control and all of the safety features. Although it does not sit as high up as my previous Toyota Highlander, I still have a clear good view of the road. The backup camera and light are very good, however, note that the Reverse Braking Assist does not recognize everything. Although I am happy, I find it hard to see some things on my screen and controls. For example, I really have a hard time reading the temperature outside.

I can tell you really love your new 2017 Outback! It's great to hear that it's the best car you've ever owned and that you think it's a great value. It's also impressive that you find it nicer than much more expensive cars. It sounds like you're really happy with your purchase and wouldn't change a thing about the car.

In April 2017, I purchased a 2017 Outback from Dave Wright Subaru in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Unfortunately, after driving around 5000 miles, I noticed that the vehicle had high oil consumption. I measured the oil consumption from 7000 to 12000 miles and found that it was consuming 1/3rd quart oil per 1000 miles. I reached out to the customer loyalty manager, sales manager, and a few others at the dealership, but unfortunately, I only received a response from one person who said that it was too close to the weekend for anyone to answer me. I waited for a week and contacted the same people again, but unfortunately, I received no response at all. I understand that Subaru settled a class action in 2016 over oil consumption and agreed to fix the affected vehicles if oil consumption was greater than 1/4 quart per 1000 miles. However, I am disappointed that the dealership is not responding to my complaints. I have written to SoA Corporate HQ, and I hope to receive a response soon. As a loyal customer, I am disappointed with the brand's major engine issue of leaking head gaskets, which most owners can expect to experience at around 90k miles. I hope that Subaru can address these issues and improve their customer service in the future.

We have unfortunately experienced multiple failures with our 4th Subaru and 3rd Outback, which have led us to search for a replacement. One of the issues we have faced is that the passenger side window randomly fails to close completely, which can be distracting when driving on the interstate. Despite following the owner's manual and re-programming it, the issue persists and the dealership has not been able to provide a permanent fix. Additionally, the battery has failed twice in 2 years without any warning, despite the car being garaged when not driven and having less than 20,000 miles. This morning, we found the battery dead with a reading of 0V DC. Lastly, there is an annoying clanking noise that occurs randomly when backing up at slow speeds, which the dealer has been unable to identify the cause of. Although we have had a positive experience with Toyota trucks, we are considering the Toyota RAV4 as a replacement due to its removal of the spare tire from the rear gate.
