Mazda Cx-3 problems

mazda logo

The Mazda CX-3 is a subcompact crossover SUV (B-segment) manufactured by Mazda. Based on the same platform as the third-generation Mazda2, it was revealed on November 19, 2014 ahead of the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show as a production vehicle for the 2016 model year.

Since mid-2022, the production in Japan was shifted to Mexico and Thailand. Since then, sales of the CX-3 in the Japanese market are served by imported units from Thailand.

Markets

United States

CX-3 sales began in the United States in the end of 2015, as a model for 2016. It replaced the similar Mazda2 subcompact in the market in North America.

Across the model lineup, power is provided by an updated (2018) 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G engine that develops 146 bhp (109 kW) and 148 lb ft (201 Nm) of torque. It is connected to a six speed automatic transmission that can be paired to an optional all wheel drive system.

In the United States, the entry level CX-3 Sport, Touring and Grand Touring all feature cruise control, power windows/lock, and a 60/40 split folding rear seat. Other highlights include a rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity, and an infotainment system, Mazda Connect, with a 7-inch display as standard equipment.

For the 2020 model year in the United States, the Touring and Grand Touring trim levels were dropped in order to make room for the Mazda CX-30 leaving only the base Sport trim, with AWD being the only option. Newly standard equipment for the Sport trim include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as the i-Activesense safety suite.

The CX-3 was discontinued in United States for 2022, marking 2021 as the final model year. It was effectively replaced by the Mazda CX-30, which was introduced in 2020.

Common Mazda Cx-3 problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Mazda CX-3, here are some common problems reported:

  • Electrical Issues: Complaints include problems with the engine control unit (ECU) becoming defective, resulting in short circuits and potential fire hazards. This can lead to damage to the converter and require engine repairs.
  • Suspension Joint Failure: There has been a recall for a suspension joint that could fail, posing a safety risk. It is essential to check the service and recall history of the vehicle before purchasing to ensure this issue has been addressed.
  • Leaking A/C Condenser: Some owners have reported issues with a leaking A/C condenser, which can impact the air conditioning system's performance and may require repairs.
  • Wheel Bearing Problems: Noisy wheel bearings are a common issue, especially noticeable at highway speeds. Replacing a wheel bearing can cost between $290-$470.
  • Shock Absorber Connection: The connection between the stub axle and shock absorber may come loose, resulting in a loss of steering. This often requires repairs or replacement of the shock absorbers.
  • Fuel Pump Impeller Failure: The low-pressure fuel pump impeller may deform, leading to fuel pump failure. This issue is usually indicated by the check engine light coming on, requiring diagnostics to identify and resolve the problem.
  • Daytime Running Lamps Flickering: Electrical faults can cause the daytime LED running lights to flicker or fail completely. This problem may necessitate the expertise of an electrical technician for diagnosis and repair.
  • Selective Catalytic Reduction System (SCR) Damage: Damage to the SCR wiring due to contamination can occur, requiring a potential replacement of the catalytic converter. This issue aims to reduce Nitrous Oxide emissions by combining exhaust gases with AdBlue.

These problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance, prompt repairs, and thorough inspections when considering a Mazda CX-3 to ensure a safe and reliable driving experience.

  • VIN: JM1DKBD78G0
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My recent experience with the service at Putnam Mazda was extremely disappointing and frustrating. What should have been a routine visit turned into a distressing ordeal. My car suddenly died on the freeway without warning lights, prompting me to bring it in for servicing. Initially, I appreciated being offered a loaner car. However, subsequent communication regarding the repair was inadequate and concerning. I received an email stating the necessary part wouldn't be available until July and was abruptly instructed to return the loaner car immediately, with no consideration for my circumstances. This lack of empathy was shocking, especially as a loyal Mazda customer. Furthermore, I experienced racial and gender profiling throughout the ordeal. Instead of addressing my concerns, I was met with aggression and threats of police involvement, making me feel targeted and discriminated against. When I questioned this response, I was told my email was "direct," justifying the aggression. Additionally, the loaner agreement lacked an expiration date. Despite being assured they would provide a grace period if needed, I was demanded to return the car immediately, with false claims about the agreement. This manipulation, gaslighting, and harassment are not only unethical but also against the law. To exacerbate matters, safety concerns with my vehicle were brushed aside. Despite my car having a non-working engine, the dealership suggested I drive it off the lot. This reckless recommendation not only endangered my safety but also the safety of others on the road. Despite repeatedly expressing these safety concerns, the dealership did nothing to address them. Responding to a concerned customer with threats of police involvement is never justified. Instead of addressing my concerns, I was met with aggression and threats. They threatened to report the car stolen and demanded I drive my car without a working engine. This behavior was unwarranted and left me feeling insulted and degrad

This doesn't happen when in drive, above a certain speed. (Mazda has the infotainment set for the touchscreen to not function above a certain speed.) This is a safety issue because it is distracting. I have contacted Mazda and they currently are refusing to pay for the replacement.

Latest negative Mazda Cx-3 car reviews

  1. Marlon Christiansen 2025-01-11

    Vehicle year: 2020

Five years ago, we purchased a Mazda CX-3 and were thrilled with the 5-year unlimited kilometers warranty, especially since we drive quite a bit. Overall, we had a positive experience with the car and were considering buying a CX-30. However, when the transmission failed 2 months after our warranty ended, we were disappointed. Despite reaching out to Mazda Canada and the dealership, they were unable to assist us beyond offering a good deal on a new car. While they claimed that transmission issues were rare, we later discovered that a friend who purchased a Mazda 3 at the same time as us had a similar issue, which was fortunately covered under warranty. We ultimately took our car to a local transmission shop, where the owner was surprised that Mazda was unwilling to fix the issue, as there is a TSB indicating that Mazda transmissions have a bearing problem. It was disheartening to learn that Mazda does not stand behind their products, and we hope that others who have purchased Mazdas do not experience similar issues. While we ultimately decided to purchase a new GMC, we would encourage Mazda owners to sell their cars before their warranty expires to avoid costly repairs.

  2. Gus Crooks 2024-11-08

    Vehicle year: 2017

The CX-3 Touring has received great reviews for its SUV styling, AWD, and affordable price. However, after driving one for 6 months, I found that some of the features and controls were not executed well and caused discomfort. The back seat is quite small and the cargo area is minimal compared to my previous hatchback, a Hyundai Elantra GT hatchback. The GT was far superior to the CX-3 in terms of roominess, interior styling, controls, and storage areas. The CX-3 has limited front storage areas, with cupholders located underneath a squeaky plastic armrest that can be inconvenient while driving. The navigation system graphics are not user-friendly, with road names featured in big white boxes that can be confusing in crowded areas. Unfortunately, the 2016 CX-3 does not include Apple CarPlay software, which is a downside for iPhone users. The accelerator can be jumpy, which may not be ideal for heavy traffic situations. Overall, while the CX-3 has some drawbacks, it still has many great features that make it a worthwhile option to consider. The interior of the car could benefit from higher quality materials, as some of the plastics used are flimsy and noisy. The sunglasses holder in the overhead compartment rattles due to the lack of rubber cushioning, which can be distracting. Additionally, the front door cubbyholes are difficult to access without getting down on the floor. The standard floor mats are made of thin material, which may not be as durable as some drivers would prefer. On certain road surfaces, such as asphalt/gravel combinations, cabin noise levels can increase significantly, making it difficult to enjoy music or hold a conversation. The audio system controls are located under the front armrest, which can be inconvenient. The exhaust sound may be artificially enhanced, which some drivers may find unappealing. The automatic transmission is designed to downshift even on slow accelerations, which may not be to everyone's liking. The windshield washers may need to be adjusted, as they tend to hit low on the windshield and leave streaks. The all-weather rubber floor mat on the driver's side may pop off the guide pins, which could be a safety concern. It is recommended to have this issue addressed by a professional. Neither dealer offered any further action on these items. The dashboard information is conveyed by intense white LEDs creating tiny lettering that is difficult to read while driving. The intensity control for lighting is a strange, raw metal post sticking straight out of the dash that offers only too high or too low light levels. Most important information is displayed by tiny, sometimes incoherent icons that are difficult to read -- dozens of them, and their minuscule size escapes notice if you are not constantly scanning the blacked out icon area. However, these issues are not major problems, and the car is still a great choice. The Hyundai GT had many more convenience features that were all nicely designed and rendered -- for instance, a smooth power roof compared to Mazda's cheap plastic manual slider with a glass panel that rises just an inch and produces too much wind noise. The Elantra GT was a lot more car for the money. Although I sold it after 8 months at a huge loss, I bought a Honda HR-V, which is also a great car.

  3. Kade Emard 2024-11-06

    Vehicle year: 2017

I've been driving my Mazda CX-3 for over three years now and have clocked up around 57,000 miles. When I first bought the car, I was driving around 40 miles a day, all on the highway. I'm happy to report that I haven't had to replace any tires yet, and I only had to replace my brake pads (which weren't even ready for replacement) at around 54,000 miles. That's some great value right there! One thing to keep in mind is that you shouldn't buy the navigation system from the dealership. Instead, you can easily get an SD card off Amazon (for $99) and have a fully equipped navigation system for a fraction of the price. All of Mazda's cars have the built-in programming/setup for the navigation system. The car is small, with a fuel tank of around 10 gallons or so, but there is a reserve gallon, so I'm constantly filling up. I average around 30 mpg (highway and city driving), but only having 9 gallons in the car is pretty tight. On the plus side, every time I fill my tank, it only costs around $25. In regards to the car being so small, the only comfortable seats are the driver and passenger seats. The back seat feels like the 3rd row of a much larger vehicle and is fit for a small child. If you're going on a shopping spree, the trunk barely fits a carry-on suitcase. However, if you lay down the back seats, there's a little bit more room. My Hyundai Elantra or Civic had more trunk/passenger space than this However, I have experienced some issues with this car. After the initial problem was fixed, water started sitting in the door of the trunk, which flooded the license plate lamp and blew it out. Unfortunately, the lamp seems to be glued shut and neither myself nor my body-shop/mechanic were able to replace it. When I mentioned this to my local dealer, they didn't seem to have a solution. There were also some issues with condensation in the headlamps and most recently, engine issues. Although the engine issues are covered under the PowerTrain Warranty, Mazda does not have the time or availability of rental cars to fix the engine in a timely manner. Despite these issues, driving this car is still fun. However, in terms of

This car may not be for everyone as it is quite narrow and may not provide the most comfortable ride.

Although the gas mileage is decent, there are several issues with the car that make it unsatisfactory. The console area is cramped, it takes a lot of time to get up to speed on highways, and there seems to be a blown gasket causing engine problems before reaching 60,000 miles. As a result, I have decided to return to Honda vehicles and will not be trying something different again.

I bought the CX3 as my city car and it has been great for that. I really enjoy the ease of parking, sharp turning, and lots of 'zoom zoom'. Although I no longer drive cross country, haul a bunch of kids, or need more hauling space than a week's groceries, I still like sitting up a little higher and having all-wheel drive (we do live in NE Ohio). That's why the CX-3 was my choice and I am really enjoying it!

I chose this car because of its affordable price (especially with 0% APR), AWD, and comfortable driving experience. Although I don't have kids and don't use the back seat much, the small backseat area doesn't affect me at all. With the seats down, there is plenty of storage space. So far, I haven't had any problems driving in the rain or snow, and I feel much safer in those conditions than I did in my Prius! The only downside is the small gas tank - although I get good gas mileage, I find myself stopping to fill up more often than I would like. However, I absolutely love the seat warmers, climate control, Bluetooth functions, safety features, and design of my CX-3.

I absolutely love my CX-3! I purchased it shortly after its debut when my Jetta TDI was totaled (not my fault). I've owned it for about 7+ months now and it's been a blast to drive. The added sensors and features have been a lifesaver for a lazy driver like myself. The leather/suede seats are incredibly comfortable, especially for such a low-cost car. Although the CX-3 is more like a hatchback overall, the driver seating feels like an SUV. I've received numerous compliments from strangers and friends about the unique look of the car. The car has lived up to its advertised 29.7 MPG average between highway and city driving. However, I do have some concerns about the car's build quality (see the next paragraph). My only major qualms are the small interior and trunk, and the lack of outlets/connectivity for the back seats. While I wanted a small vehicle, I expected the CX-3 to at least be able to carry as much as a sedan. Unfortunately, the size and make-up of the interior prevent transporting a lot of items, making it less than ideal for family vacations. I'm considering getting a hitch installed or rails on the roof to provide more options for carrying items. It would also be great to have a fold-down armrest in the back seat with cup holders and a USB or AC/DC outlet. Despite these minor issues, my kids (4 & 14) love the Furthermore, the repair shop was able to fix all but the blind spot sensor. However, the Mazda dealership took 3 weeks to fix the sensor and did so incorrectly 3 times. Basically, I was without my car for 3+ weeks because Mazda did not train its technicians on the new technology in their vehicles. If there are any issues with the blindspot sensors, the bumper and rear fender flares must be removed and will probably be damaged. The dealership went through 2 bumpers and 2 sets of flares fixing the sensor. I do worry about getting into an accident in the future and the car just buckling and crumbling, or that if any of the sensors are messed up that it will take a nightmare to fix them. However, it's been a year and I still love my car. I still get compliments on its sporty look, and I've had no recent problems.

At first, I overlooked the CX-3 because I thought it lacked power. However, after the salesman convinced me to test drive one, I was pleasantly surprised by how peppy it felt. This car is incredibly fun to drive, with fantastic handling that makes it feel like a little go-kart. I live in Minneapolis and had the chance to try it out in the snow, and the all-wheel drive is simply amazing. I was able to plow through 6+ inches of snow up steep hills with no problem at all. If you're looking for a car with a lot of cargo space or have kids, you may want to consider the CX-5.

This car is a unique blend of a small tank and a Porsche. It handles excellently and after test driving it, I chose the CX3 over a Subaru Crosstrek - which was a bit of a disappointment in comparison. While it's not quite a utility vehicle, it's more like a station wagon that's been jacked up higher off the ground and has AWD. The CX3 feels powerful with its 2L engine and has great acceleration if you drop the pedal. It's a beast in the snow, easily handling any bad weather conditions like snow, ice, or rain. Even going uphill in several inches of wet snow barely causes a slip. On the highway, it's smooth sailing and has great MPG. The interior is comfortable and has plenty of USB ports for all your devices. The touch screen has good visibility and all the functions work well, including the console dial, voice control, rear camera, and steering wheel buttons. The back seats are not huge, but my kid says they're comfortable. It would be cool to have a USB port or two back there instead of having to run a wire from the front. The cargo area is big enough for me to carry two hockey equipment bags for both my kids and most other bulky stuff, but it's not huge, which is something I happily accept for what the car is. It even has a small sub-section under the floor so you can make it a little bigger if you need to. The stereo may sometimes have a little buzz if you set the bass all the way up to max, but that's a minor issue. Overall, the CX3 is a great car that's perfect for families and anyone who wants a comfortable and reliable ride. One thing that bothers me about the CX3 is that the back of the car gets really dirty from road spray and grime. It's not as bad in the summer when the roads are cleaner, but driving on wet and salted roads can leave the car covered in a filthy mess. Adding mudflaps might help with this issue. At 40,000 miles, the car needed new tires and brakes, but I upgraded to Michelin Defender tires which significantly reduced road noise. The car can be a bit noisy, especially during a rainstorm, but the handling and performance are still excellent. The interior has held up well and the stereo buzz was fixed by Mazda for free. At 65,000 miles, I noticed that the back brakes wear out faster than the front brakes, which is unusual. However, the car has been mechanically sound and the AWD traction in snow and overall engine performance are still top-notch. I added the carplay/android auto update a couple of years ago, which brought the car up to modern standards. The fuel efficiency is excellent, and overall, it's been a reliable workhorse for our family that we have no plans to replace.
