1998 Lincoln Mark viii problems

lincoln logo

The Lincoln Mark VIII is a grand touring luxury sport coupe that was marketed by Lincoln from the 1993 to 1998 model years. The first generation of the Mark series branded entirely as a Lincoln, the Mark VIII again served as a counterpart of the Ford Thunderbird and Mercury Cougar. Though maintaining its traditional brand rivalry with the Cadillac Eldorado, the Mark VIII was also developed to become more competitive against luxury coupes from automakers around the world.

Replacing the Fox platform of the Mark VII, the Mark VIII was the exclusive model to use the FN10 chassis, a derivative of the MN12 platform developed for the Thunderbird and Cougar. Growing slightly in size (primarily in wheelbase), the Mark VIII was developed with independent suspension for all four wheels; at the time, the only other rear-wheel drive American cars to do so (alongside the Thunderbird and Cougar) were the Chevrolet Corvette and Dodge Viper RT/10. Matching the Cadillac Northstar engine, the Mark VIII was fitted with a dual-overhead cam 4.6L V8, the first Ford Motor Company vehicle fitted with such an engine.

Through its six-year production run, the Mark VIII was manufactured by Ford at its Wixom Assembly Plant (Wixom, Michigan). As of current production, the model line is the final generation of the Mark series and Lincoln has not introduced a direct successor to the model line ever since its 1998 discontinuation.

Common 1998 Lincoln Mark viii problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII, several common problems have been identified:

  1. Air Suspension Issues:
    • Owners have reported frequent problems with the air suspension system, leading to the car lowering unexpectedly or failing to rise properly.
    • Many have opted for non-air conversion kits to replace the air suspension, such as those offered by Strutmasters.com, to save on repair costs.
    • Some have experienced issues with the air ride system light coming on intermittently, indicating potential air pump or compressor problems.
  2. Transmission Problems:
    • Complaints include issues with the transmission, such as harsh shifting due to the 1-2 accumulator spring breaking, especially in early models.
    • Heat-related transmission problems have been noted, prompting recommendations for a transmission cooler and the use of Mercon 5 transmission fluid.
  3. Headlight Quality:
    • Owners have expressed dissatisfaction with the poor quality of the headlights, particularly in base models, where halogen bulbs can cause the reflective coating to peel off.
    • A DIY fix involving baking the headlights to re-coat them has been suggested to improve visibility.
  4. Interior Component Failures:
    • Various interior components have been reported to fail over time, including HVAC buttons, window motors, and the ashtray door.
    • The blend door arm breaking in 1997-1998 models can lead to issues with the HVAC system, requiring a complex dash removal for repair.
  5. Electrical and Sensor Problems:
    • The Lincoln Mark VIII is equipped with numerous sensors and gadgets that are prone to failure, leading to issues like malfunctioning mirrors and faulty power steering pumps.
    • Problems with the power steering pump leaking, air suspension sensors failing, and issues with the mass airflow systems have been highlighted by owners.

These common problems with the 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII can be challenging and costly to address, prompting some owners to seek alternative solutions like conversion kits or DIY repairs. Regular maintenance and proactive monitoring of these known issues can help owners mitigate potential problems and ensure a smoother driving experience with this classic vehicle.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-05-13
  • VIN: 1LNFM92V1WY
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: UPDATE TO LAST COMPLAINT: THE PASSENGER SIDE HID HEADLIGHT HAS FAILED, NO REPLACEMENT EXCEPT $1000 CONVERSION KIT. HAVE TO DRIVE WITH ONLY "BRIGHTS" ON FROM NOW ON. DANGER TO MYSELF AND THOSE I'M PASSING, PLUS IF THE "BRIGHTS" AREN'T ON, THEN I HAVE NO HEADLIGHTS AND COULD GET PULLED OVER. PASSENGER SIDE BALL JOINT/CONTROL ARM BROKE WHILE DRIVING AND TIRE FELL OFF WHILE DRIVING IN PARKING LOT AT WORK. AFTER REPAIR, HEARING A BAD CREAKING NOISE. AIR SUSPENSION HAS TO FILL UP ALL THE WAY WHEN I START THE VEHICLE EVEN AFTER 5 MINUTES OF IT BEING SHUT OFF. HAVE PAID $1,200 FOR REPAIRS OF SUSPENSION AND STEERING IN 6 MONTHS. (THAT'S WITH MY DEALERSHIP EMPLOYEE DISCOUNT). SERIOUSLY, I'VE HEARD TOO MUCH ABOUT DEFECTIVE BALL JOINTS, HEADLIGHTS, NO HEAT, DOOR HANDLES SNAPPING OFF, AND THE AIR SUSPENSION GOING BAD. WHY IS FORD NOT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT THESE OBVIOUSLY DEFECTIVE PARTS??? BECAUSE THE CAR IS RARE AND THEY DON'T MAKE THEM ANYMORE???

SUSPENSION,WHEELS,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-02-01
  • VIN: 1LNFM92V1WY
  • Components: SUSPENSION,WHEELS,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: I'VE HAD THIS GEM SINCE 2010, BOUGHT WITH 30,000 MILES...NOW HAS 104,000 MILES. IT WAS GREAT UNTIL 2014. WHERE DO I START? (1) NO HEAT- BROKEN BLENDER DOOR ACTUATOR...MANUALLY SET IT TO THE WARM SETTING FOR THE WINTER BEHIND GLOVE BOX. (2) DRIVER'S DOOR HANDLE SNAPPED LAST YEAR(REPLACED FOR $100)...AND NOW THIS YEAR THE PASSENGER SIDE SNAPPED. (3) DOORS ARE CONSTANTLY "AJAR", ALTERNATING FROM ONE SIDE TO THE OTHER. (4) BALL JOINT IS STARTING TO WEAR BADLY, (5) DRIVER'S SEAT WON'T RECLINE, (6) STEERING WHEEL WON'T MOVE FORWARD/BACKWARD ANYMORE, (7) SUSPENSION IS STARTING TO GO...FRONT END LOWERS TO GROUND AFTER SHUTTING DOWN ENGINE. I'M SURE THERE'S MORE THAT I CAN'T THINK OF.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-03-04
  • VIN: 1LNFM92V2WY
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: THE BRAKES CAN QUIT WORKING AFTER THE AUTOMATIC PARKING BRAKE RELEASE SOLENOID FAILS TO RELEASE THE REAR BRAKES WHEN THE TRANSMISSION LEVER IS MOVED OUT OF PARK. THE REAR BRAKES WILL THEN OVERHEAT AFTER SEVERAL MILES, WHICH CAUSES THE BRAKE FLUID TO EVENTUALLY BOIL AND BE EXPELLED FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER. THE FIRST SYMPTOM IS THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL GOES ALMOST ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AND BRAKING BECOMES ERRATIC. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, THE BRAKING SYSTEM TOTALLY FAILED TO STOP THE CAR DUE TO LACK OF BRAKE FLUID IN THE MASTER CYLINDER. PUMPING THE BRAKE PEDAL RAPIDLY AND SHEER LUCK ARE THE ONLY THINGS THAT HAVE PREVENTED A MAJOR CRASH (SO FAR...)! THE REAR BRAKE PADS AND FLUID HAVE BEEN REPLACED, BUT THERE SEEMS TO BE NO FIX AVAILABLE THAT WOULD PREVENT THE PROBLEM FROM RE-OCCURRING. THIS SAFETY DEFECT APPEARS TO BE CAUSED BY THE PARKING BRAKE POSITION SENSOR SWITCH FAILING TO NOTIFY THE COMPUTER SOFTWARE THAT THE PARKING BRAKE IS SET,, SO THE CONTROLLING SOFTWARE DOESN'T BOTHER TO RELEASE THE BRAKE AT DRIVE-OFF. THE WARNING LIGHT ALSO FAILS TO INDICATE A PROBLEM TO THE DRIVER, WHICH MAKES THIS A VERY DANGEROUS COMBINATION OF HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE FAILURE AFTER THIS PROBLEM HAPPENED TO MY WIFE TWICE, I BEGAN TO DRIVE THE CAR TO SEE WHAT WAS HAPPENING. SURE ENOUGH, AFTER A COUPLE OF DAYS, THE PROBLEM OCCURRED EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED ABOVE. THE ONLY WORKAROUND IS TO USE THE EMERGENCY MECHANICAL RELEASE BEFORE DRIVING OFF. IF ONE FORGETS TO DO THIS, THERE IS NO WAY OF KNOWING THAT THE REAR BRAKES ARE DRAGGING AND IMPENDING BRAKE FAILURE IS A CERTAINTY..

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-03-01
  • VIN: 1LNFM92V4WY
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I OWN A 1998 LINCOLN MARK VIII. I HAVE OWNED THIS CAR SINCE 1999. RECENTLY, ONE OF THE HEADLIGHT LAMPS BURNED OUT. I ATTEMPTED TO BUY A REPLACEMENT BULB AT SEVERAL AUTO PARTS STORES WITHOUT SUCCESS. I CONTACTED THE LOCAL LINCOLN DEALERS AND FOUND THAT THE BULB (SYLVANIA 9500) IS NO LONGER MANUFACTURED. I ALSO FOUND THAT THERE IS NO STOCK OF AVAILABLE BULBS IN THE UNITED STATES EXCEPT FOR USED BULBS ON E-BAY. (FOR $199). I RESEARCHED THIS ISSUE ON THE INTERNET AND DETERMINED THAT LINCOLN'S REMEDY FOR THIS PROBLEM WAS TO SELL A CONVERSION KIT (FROM HID LIGHTS TO HALOGEN) FOR OVER $1,000.00. I DO NOT KNOW IF THEY ARE CHARGING $1,000.00 FOR A PAIR OF LIGHTS OR FOR ONLY ONE SIDE. AT THIS POINT I CANNOT SAFELY DRIVE MY VEHICLE AFTER DARK. I CANNOT FIND A REASONABLY PRICED REPLACEMENT PART. I AM LEFT WITH LINCOLN'S "REMEDY" OF SPENDING AT LEAST $1,000 TO REPLACE A HEADLIGHT BULB. I AM ALSO CONCERNED THAT IF I DO DRIVE THE CAR WITH ONE HEADLIGHT OUT THE OTHER ONE MAY GO OUT LEAVING ME WITH NO HEADLAMPS. *TR

Negative 1998 Lincoln Mark viii car reviews

  1. Edwardo Herman 2024-08-27

The styling and fit finish of the Mark 8 are truly awesome! However, I have had some issues with the car, unfortunately. It has had a few problems, such as a blown head gasket and issues with the steering column. The repairs have been quite costly, but I am hopeful that the car will continue to improve. On the bright side, my Buick Ultra v6 is faster than the Mark 8, running a 14.72 quarter mile, and my Buick Park Ave runs a 14.38 quarter mile. I am keeping my fingers crossed that no other issues arise, but I am confident that I will be able to handle them if they do. Thank you for your understanding!

  2. Bo Bernhard 2024-08-04

This car's design has room for improvement. The caps to the coils are splitting after 76K miles, which requires the entire coil to be replaced due to a design defect and a $5.00 part. Additionally, the car occasionally experiences issues with starting. However, after 2 days of not starting, on the 3rd day, it functioned perfectly as if nothing was ever wrong.

  3. Mckenzie Altenwerth 2024-03-05

Combination of features and performance with this vehicle is great! The exterior appearance still looks fresh and the interior ergonomics are perfect, making it very comfortable for highway traveling. Despite what others say, the car tracks well in winter conditions. Overall, the LSC trim package transforms this car into a luxurious version of the Mustang Cobra. I receive lots of compliments on the vehicle from strangers.

  4. Chet Cassin 2024-02-28

The engine cutting out without warning has been a persistent issue, despite the replacement of the coils. This problem has worsened to the point where the vehicle is unable to be driven for more than three weeks without the same issue reoccurring. Legal action has been taken and the dealer has agreed to buy back the vehicle. It is worth noting that this fault is common with this model. Additionally, the telescoping steering wheel has been a constant issue, with replacements only lasting a month. Another constant problem has been the fuel cap not releasing.

  5. Rhett Corkery 2024-02-13

This automobile has had several issues, including repeated problems with the ignition coils and catalytic converters. The cost of repairs exceeded $500 a month after the warranty expired. Additionally, there were several smaller issues, such as a burned-out headlight and a broken door handle. Overall, the owner's satisfaction with this Ford product is very low.

The car was a joy to drive, very comfortable and hassle-free. I'm delighted to say that I had no issues with it whatsoever and have been thoroughly satisfied with my experience!

This car is a classic. It has a great design and great performance, making it a real road machine. This is actually my fourth Lincoln, and my third Mark. It's a shame that Ford decided to stop making these luxury coupes. I've put 29000 miles on this car and have only had one minor warranty job done. It has sporty handling and a smooth, comfortable ride, both in the city and on the open road.

This is such a great car! It has been so dependable and has served my needs for 5 years. It's really comfortable and great on starts and stops. I still love its unique design (aircraft cockpit style) and have received so many compliments on its exterior looks. It's such a unique American luxury car among all the German/Japanese models seen all over Southern California.

You won't believe it, but I was given this amazing automobile by an 88-year-old original owner just last month! It's in fantastic condition with only 51k miles on it, and it still runs like a dream. The car was repainted in 2008 and has had new tires, A/C, brakes, and rear suspension installed within the last 2 years. Although I will need to change the belts and repair the low beam headlight, the inside is very clean and the leather is still in great shape. Plus, the car was kept under a carport for the entire 22 years!

I bought this Mark with 32,000 miles and have since put 87,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I have had to replace both front brake rotors due to warping, as well as the rear neon light ballast and both HID headlamps. Additionally, I had to replace two C.O.P. coils and the air ride pump is starting to sound bad. Despite these issues, I am a proud owner of three Marks, including a 1998 Mark VIII LSC (mentioned above), a 1996 Mark VIII with 82,000 miles (where I had to replace the air struts/pump and front brake rotors due to warping), and a 1995 Mark VIII with 150,000 miles (where I had to replace the air struts/pump, front brake rotors due to warping, transmission shift assembly, and alternator). I really enjoy driving these cars and I wish they were still being made. In my experience, they have been some of the best cars I have ever owned, even better than a 2001 Cadillac STS that I previously owned.
