Lincoln Blackwood problems

The Lincoln Blackwood is a luxury pickup truck that was marketed by the Lincoln division of Ford Motor Company for the 2002 model year. The first pickup truck marketed by Lincoln, the Blackwood was derived from the Ford F-150 SuperCrew and the Lincoln Navigator. Drawing its name from its simulated black woodgrain cargo box, the Blackwood was offered solely with a black-painted exterior.

Although the concept vehicle had a positive public reception, the production Blackwood fell far under sales projections in the United States and Mexico. After the 2002 model year, the Blackwood was discontinued in the United States, with a short run of 2003 models produced for Mexico. In total, only 3,383 units were produced, making it both the rarest and shortest-produced Lincoln model line. For 2006, Lincoln entered the pickup truck segment for a second time with the Lincoln Mark LT, again based on the Ford F-150.

The first Lincoln vehicle manufactured exclusively outside of the state of Michigan since 1958, the Blackwood was assembled by Ford at its Kansas City Assembly facility in Claycomo, Missouri, alongside the F-150 from August 2001 to December 2002.

Common Lincoln Blackwood problems

The 2002 Lincoln Blackwood was a unique luxury truck that was in production for only one year, which made it quite the flop. This vehicle was a result of a love child between a Ford F-150 and a Lincoln Navigator. While it had a powerful 5.4-liter Triton V8 engine that produced 300 hp and 355 lb-ft of torque, it was only available as a rear-drive truck, with a towing capacity of 8,700 pounds and a 0-60 mph time of 8.5 seconds.

One of the most notable features of the Lincoln Blackwood was its cargo bed area, which the automaker actually called a "trunk" to put it more in line with its luxurious panache. The Blackwood's trunk measured only 27 cubic feet, featured a powered tonneau cover, LED bed lighting strips, stainless steel cargo walls, a split-open barn door tailgate, and a carpeted cargo bed area. This made it better for hauling luxurious luggage as opposed to chainsaws or a lawnmower.

The luxury accouterments continued inside the cabin, which was adorned in black leather and featured four bucket seats, two up front and two in the rear. The only option available was a $2,000 navigation system that featured a five-inch screen in the center console and the rest of the buttons, dials, and wiper/signal stalks were straight out of the Lincoln/Ford parts bin. The interior was pretty luxurious for a truck at the time, with front seats that were heated and ventilated, automatic climate control, and a premium sound system with a six-disc CD changer.

However, despite its luxurious features, the Lincoln Blackwood was a failure in the market. The automaker set out to sell at least 10,000 units per year, but ultimately, only 3,356 units were ever moved off of dealer lots, which could be a result of the truck’s high asking price of $52,500 at the time, which was around $20,000 more than its corporate cousin, the Ford F-150.

The Lincoln Blackwood's rarity has paid off when it comes to value retention, with many used models priced between $10,000 to $20,000. However, it's unclear how much demand there is for them now, considering there wasn't much back then.

Lincoln is known for its unreliability, with engine major, engine cooling, transmission major, and drive system problems being more likely to take a car out. The Lincoln Blackwood is no exception, with many owners reporting issues with the engine, transmission, and other components.

One of the most frustrating issues with Lincoln vehicles is the Sync system, which is the cause of a lot of dealership visits and customer frustration. Navigators have cam phaser problems, like all the 3.5EB F150s, and the Aviator has been criticized for its complex and unreliable systems.

In summary, the Lincoln Blackwood was a unique and interesting luxury truck that was ultimately a failure in the market. Despite its luxurious features and powerful engine, its high price and unreliability made it a difficult sell for many consumers. While it may have some value in the used market, its rarity and unreliability may make it a less desirable choice for many buyers.

Why was the Lincoln Blackwood discontinued?

To make the truck even more special, Lincoln planned to limit production to 10,000 units annually. This turned out to be unnecessary, as the Blackwood was such a sales disaster that Lincoln discontinued it after one model year, making it the division's shortest-ever production run.

Are Lincoln blackwoods rare?

In total, only 3,383 units were produced, making it both the rarest and shortest-produced Lincoln model line.

How many Lincoln Blackwoods are there?

Three thousand three hundred and fifty-six. That's how many Lincoln Blackwoods exist in the world. For comparison, the Ford F-150—the Blackwood's inspiration—has spawned more than 40 million since its launch in 1948.

Did the Lincoln Blackwood come in 4wd?

Unlike the all-wheel-drive EXT, Blackwood comes only in two-wheel drive.

This is a fantastic looking Navigator! It turns heads everywhere you go with its great looks and impressive size. Not only does it look great, but it also drives like a dream.

  2. Carmelo Bartoletti 2024-11-09

    Vehicle year: 2002

It's a shame that the price point of this fantastic ride is out of reach for most people. I've owned a lot of cars, but this one really stands out with its sweet 32-valve engine. Once you break it in, you can expect around 16mpg for gas mileage. The big auto transmission is a dream to drive.

  3. Macey Terry 2024-11-04

    Vehicle year: 2002

Driving this 'truck' is an absolute joy. It has plenty of room for all passengers, and the steering is solid, accurate, and responsive. Even at high speeds, the 'truck' handles with agility. In town, the vehicle can maneuver easily in and out of tight spaces, despite its size. This 'truck' has an aftermarket supercharger that adds about 100 hp, yet it still feels like it could handle an additional 100 hp. It's hard to call it a truck, though, with the bed so nicely detailed. I don't ever see myself throwing bales of hay in the back. However, with the power tonneau cover, I do use the back to carry the things that usually collect in the back seat.

  4. Leonardo Kihn 2024-08-14

    Vehicle year: 2002

This vehicle is such a dream to drive! It has more than adequate power and a level of luxury that surpasses anything I have owned to date.

  5. Casimer Prohaska 2024-07-22

    Vehicle year: 2002

I'm so glad to hear that you were able to get your hands on this vehicle, even if it was a few years after it first came out. It sounds like it's still in great condition with relatively low mileage. The gas mileage seems to be pretty reasonable, especially considering all of the great features it has. It's not necessarily a heavy-duty work truck, but it definitely seems to be able to handle everyday tasks like grocery shopping, golfing, and traveling with ease.
