1990 Lexus Ls400 problems
The Lexus LS (Japanese: レクサス・LS, Hepburn: Rekusasu LS) is a full-size luxury sedan (F-segment in Europe) serving as the flagship model of Lexus, the luxury division of Toyota. For the first four generations, all LS models featured V8 engines and were predominantly rear-wheel-drive. In the fourth generation, Lexus offered all-wheel-drive, hybrid, and long-wheelbase variants. The fifth generation changed to using a V6 engine with no V8 option, and only one length was offered.
As the first model developed by Lexus, the LS 400 debuted in January 1989 with the second generation debuting in November 1994. The LS 430 debuted in January 2000 and the LS 460/LS 460 L series in 2006. A domestic-market version of the LS 400 and LS 430, badged as Toyota Celsior (Japanese: トヨタ・セルシオ, Hepburn: Toyota Serushio), was sold in Japan until the Lexus marque was introduced there in 2006. In 2006 (for the 2007 model year), the fourth generation LS 460 debuted the first production eight-speed automatic transmission and an automatic parking system. In 2007, V8 hybrid powertrains were introduced on the LS 600h/LS 600h L sedans.
Development of the LS began in 1983 as the F1 project, the code name for a secret flagship sedan. At the time, Toyota's two existing flagship models were the Crown and Century models – both of which catered exclusively for the Japanese market and had little global appeal that could compete with international luxury brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Jaguar. The resulting sedan followed an extended five-year design process at a cost of over US$1 billion, and premiered with a new V8 engine and numerous luxury features. The Lexus LS was intended from its inception for export markets, and the Lexus division was formed to market and service the vehicle internationally. The original LS 400 debuted to strong sales, and was largely responsible for the successful launch of the Lexus marque.
Since the start of production, each generation of the Lexus LS has been manufactured in the Japanese city of Tahara, Aichi. The name "LS" stands for "Luxury Sedan", although some Lexus importers have preferred to define it as "Luxury Saloon". The name "Celsior" is taken from Latin word "celsus", meaning "lofty" or "elevated".

Common 1990 Lexus Ls400 problems
The Lexus LS400, produced in 1990, is known for its dependability and reliability. However, like any vehicle, it has some common problems that potential buyers should be aware of.
- Starter Motor: The starter motor in the LS400 is located in a challenging position, underneath the intake manifold, making it difficult to access and prone to failure between 100,000 and 200,000 miles. The removal of the intake manifold may also result in the heater control valve cracking and needing replacement.
- Engine Mounts: The LS400 uses special fluid-filled engine mounts that reduce vibrations in the car. Over time, these mounts may collapse and fail, leading to increased vibration. Replacing them is expensive due to the complexity of the repair.
- Timing Belt: The 1UZ 4.0L V8 engine in the LS400 uses a timing belt instead of a timing chain for quieter operation. The timing belt should be replaced every 90,000 miles or 7 years, along with two timing belt idler bearings. This is a dealership-level repair and should not be attempted by home mechanics.
- Transmission Issues: Transmission problems are common in older LS400 models. These issues may include leaks, rough shifting, and slipping. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address these problems early on.
- Flexdiscs: The LS400 has two flexdiscs, one at the transmission and the other at the rear axle. These components may wear out over time and should be checked during regular maintenance inspections.
- Strut Bars & Flex EGR Pipe: Strut bars and the EGR pipe are other common problem areas in the LS400. These components may need to be replaced, especially if they have not been changed along with the timing belt and water pump.
- AC and Air Suspension: The air suspension and AC systems in the LS400 may also develop problems over time. These issues may include leaks, failure to maintain proper ride height, or loss of cool air.
In summary, while the Lexus LS400 is generally a reliable vehicle, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address these issues early on, ensuring the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

- Summary: MY CAR, MADE BY TOYOTA, HAS ALL THE SAME PROBLEMS, FAULTY PARTS, AS THE CARS THAT WERE RECALLED FOR SUDDEN ACCELERATION. I HAVE HAD THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION PROBLEM HAPPEN TWICE AND I AM CURRENTLY UNABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR BECAUSE OF A FAULTY RESISTOR THAT CONTROLS THE FUEL FEED TOT THE FUEL PUMP KEEPS CAUSING THE CAR TO ACT LIKE IT IS RUNNING OUT OF GAS. VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 1995-09-01
- VIN: JT8UF11E6L0
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: IN APPROXIMATELY 1995, I EXPERIENCED THE "SUDDEN ACCELERATION" PROBLEM TWICE WITH MY LEXUS LS. AT THE TIME, NO ONE HAD EVER HEARD OF IT AND THE DEALER SAID HE COULD NOT REPRODUCE IT AND COULD DO NOTHING. AFTER THAT I WAS MORE CAREFUL WITH THE FLOOR MATS AND THOUGHT I HAD SOLVED THE PROBLEM. FOR THE LAST 7 TO 8 YEARS, THE CAR SUDDENLY SLOWS AND STALLS. I HAVE REPEATEDLY COMPLAINED TO NEW COUNTRY LEXUS BUT THEY JUST SAY THAT THEY CANNOT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM AND DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS. IN JUNE, IT HAPPENED AGAIN AND I HAD TO BE TOWED BY AAA. AT THIS TIME I RESEARCHED "LEXUS LS STALLING PROBLEM" AND GOT HUNDREDS OF HITS. ONE LEXUS SITE PERFECTLY EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM, HOW TO REPRODUCE IT AND HOW TO FIX IT. THE POSTING ON THE LEXUS SITE WAS DATED 2005, TEN YEARS AGO. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER REPRODUCED THE PROBLEM WITHIN AN HOUR BUT NEW COUNTRY LEXUS WOULD NOT SELL HIM THE REQUIRED RESISTOR TO FIX IT. I TOOK THE CAR TO NEW COUNTRY LEXUS, JUST NORTH OF ALBANY NY, AND THEY HAVE HAD IT SINCE JUNE. THEY KEEP SAYING THAT THEY CANNOT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM. THEY KEEP TELLING ME THAT THEY CANNOT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM BUT I KEEP GIVING THEM THE PRINT-OUT FROM THE LEXUS SITE AND THE BILL FROM THE TOWING COMPANY EXPLAINING EXACTLY HOW TO REPRODUCE AND FIX THE PROBLEM. FINALLY YESTERDAY JOE MORAN SAID THAT HE COULD FIX IT BUT "AS SOON AS ANYONE BRINGS UP ANYTHING TO DO WITH SUDDEN ACCELERATION" I AM TOLD TO STOP AND DO NOTHING." HE SAID "IT IS NOT IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE COMPANY TO FIX IT." THEY CLEARLY SEEMED TO BE TELLING ME THAT THIS RESISTOR (OR SENSOR) IS PART OF THE RAPID ACCELERATION PROBLEM WITH TOYOTA VEHICLES AND, ALTHOUGH MY VEHICLE IS NOT ON THE LIST OF VEHICLES INDICATED FOR A "SPECIAL PROTOCOL," THIS PARTICULAR PART IS TRACED TO THE RAPID ACCELERATION AND THEY WANT NOTHING TO DO WITH IT.

When I first heard that my friend was selling his car, which was nearly 20 years old, I was hesitant to accept the offer. However, I am now glad that I did not turn it down. Even after two decades, this car runs better than my friends' cars that are 10+ years younger than it! I was amazed by its quiet and powerful performance. The ride is smooth, and the suspension is just great. I even took it to my mechanic for a check-up, and he was impressed with how it looks. I am truly impressed with the manufacturing of this Lexus and how it can still run so well after 20 years. Toyota, you have definitely won a customer for life!
Cole Legros 2024-11-14
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Lexus. I bought it with 187k miles on it and it's been a great car for me. I also have a 2001 LS430 with 82k miles, but I have to say, I prefer the older Lexus look. Even though repairs can be expensive due to the cost of parts, my 90 LS400 still runs great and looks beautiful with over 400k miles on it. Overall, I think it's the best car ever built! I do want to mention that parts for Lexus can be 3-4 times more expensive than Toyota parts, so it's something to keep in mind. Thanks for listening!
Carmelo Strosin 2024-11-11
This is an amazing car! It has a stunning design that, in my opinion, surpasses its German rivals of the day. It has aged beautifully and still looks great today. The interior comfort for both the driver and passengers is unmatched, as is the ride comfort and overall build quality. At its price point, you simply cannot find a car that matches its level of performance and quality. Even if you find one with more than 100k miles, don't be afraid to purchase it. As any Lexus owner will tell you, that's young for an LS400. I bought mine at 130k miles and it's been fantastic. The only downside to this car is the high repair costs, but they are infrequent and worth it for such a great car!
Sim Schimmel 2024-11-01
This car is 15 years old and still going strong. It has plenty of power, good styling, and the interior holds up well to wear. You shouldn't hesitate to buy a used model, especially since I got it at 195,000 miles and didn't flinch after my experiences with my Voyager, F-150, and Cadillac.
Devan Effertz 2024-10-28
Your car is amazing! Even though it's 14 years old and has 95,000 miles on it, it drives better than most sedans out there. The ride is very smooth, it has good power, and the power steering is great. It's comfortable on all roads, but it's at its best on the highway where its power and loose suspension are best put to use.
