The Lexus LS (Japanese: レクサス・LS, Hepburn: Rekusasu LS) is a full-size luxury sedan (F-segment in Europe) serving as the flagship model of Lexus, the luxury division of Toyota. For the first four generations, all LS models featured V8 engines and were predominantly rear-wheel-drive. In the fourth generation, Lexus offered all-wheel-drive, hybrid, and long-wheelbase variants. The fifth generation changed to using a V6 engine with no V8 option, and only one length was offered.

As the first model developed by Lexus, the LS 400 debuted in January 1989 with the second generation debuting in November 1994. The LS 430 debuted in January 2000 and the LS 460/LS 460 L series in 2006. A domestic-market version of the LS 400 and LS 430, badged as Toyota Celsior (Japanese: トヨタ・セルシオ, Hepburn: Toyota Serushio), was sold in Japan until the Lexus marque was introduced there in 2006. In 2006 (for the 2007 model year), the fourth generation LS 460 debuted the first production eight-speed automatic transmission and an automatic parking system. In 2007, V8 hybrid powertrains were introduced on the LS 600h/LS 600h L sedans.

Development of the LS began in 1983 as the F1 project, the code name for a secret flagship sedan. At the time, Toyota's two existing flagship models were the Crown and Century models – both of which catered exclusively for the Japanese market and had little global appeal that could compete with international luxury brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Jaguar. The resulting sedan followed an extended five-year design process at a cost of over US$1 billion, and premiered with a new V8 engine and numerous luxury features. The Lexus LS was intended from its inception for export markets, and the Lexus division was formed to market and service the vehicle internationally. The original LS 400 debuted to strong sales, and was largely responsible for the successful launch of the Lexus marque.

Since the start of production, each generation of the Lexus LS has been manufactured in the Japanese city of Tahara, Aichi. The name "LS" stands for "Luxury Sedan", although some Lexus importers have preferred to define it as "Luxury Saloon". The name "Celsior" is taken from Latin word "celsus", meaning "lofty" or "elevated".

Common 1995 Lexus Ls400 problems

The 1995 Lexus LS400, a luxury sedan, is known for its durability and reliability. However, there are several common problems that potential buyers should be aware of.

  • Starter Motor Failure: The starter motor in the 1UZFE 4.0L V8 engine, located in a challenging position underneath the intake manifold, is prone to failure between 100,000 and 200,000 miles.
  • Engine Mounts: The LS400 uses special fluid-filled engine mounts that can collapse and fail over time, leading to increased vibration in the vehicle.
  • Timing Belt: The 1UZ 4.0L V8 engine uses a timing belt instead of a timing chain for quieter operation.
  • Power Steering Pump: The power steering pump in the LS400 may develop leaks over time, which can potentially damage the alternator due to its location directly beneath the power steering pump.
  • Transmission Issues: Transmission problems, including issues with the transmission mount and flex discs, are common in the LS400.
  • Rust: Rust is a common problem in older vehicles, and the LS400 is no exception.
  • ECU Capacitors: The ECU's capacitors may fail over time, leading to issues with the vehicle's electrical system.
  • Flex EGR Pipe: The flex EGR pipe in the LS400 may crack and leak, leading to issues with the vehicle's emissions system.

In summary, while the 1995 Lexus LS400 is known for its reliability and durability, potential buyers should be aware of common problems such as starter motor failure, engine mount collapse, timing belt replacement, power steering pump leaks, transmission issues, rust, ECU capacitor failure, and flex EGR pipe cracks. Addressing these issues in a timely manner can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

What are the most common problems with the LS400?

These are the common problems for the old LS400's: Starter, ps pump, alternator, ECU's caps, tranny, tranny's mount, flexdiscs (1 at the tranny & the other at the rear axle), strut bars & flex EGR pipe so ask the current owner if they've been changed along w/ the timing belt/water pump but for $800, you can't expect ...

What is the life expectancy of a Lexus LS 400?

A: You should be able to reach 200,000 miles in that car if you really take care of it. The LS 400 is a very reliable luxury sedan, but you should consider changing the timing belt because of its age.

How reliable is the LS400?

This is the most reliable car on the planet. There's multiple examples of these cars going 250, 300,000 miles with no issues. All you need is brakes, tires, gas, and oil changes, and that's it. And these things will run forever.

What is the highest mileage on the LS400?

The million-mile Lexus LS owned by auto journalist Matt Farah has finally lived up to its name, with the 1996 LS 400 reaching 1,000,000 miles this past week. Farah purchased the LS used for $1,500 USD with 897,000 miles on the odometer in 2014, with the plan to break the million-mile mark.

  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: THE EVENING OF 3/7/15 MY WIFE AND I DROVE FROM CEDAR RAPIDS, IA. TO OUR HOME IN MUSCATINE, IA. AS WE EXITED I-80 AFTER ALMOST ONE HOUR OF CONSTANT INTERSTATE DRIVING, THE CAR STALLED AT APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH AS WE CAME TO THE STOP SIGN AT THE END OF THE EXIT RAMP. WE LOST POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES AS WELL, CAUSING PANIC. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED IN THE TWO YEARS WE HAVE OWNED THIS CAR. IT SEEMS TO OCCUR AFTER PROLONGED INTERSTATE DRIVING ONLY. IT DID NOT OCCUR THAT MORNING BECAUSE WE BROKE UP THE TRIP TO CR WITH A STOP IN IOWA CITY. THIS IS A HORRIBLY DANGEROUS CONDITION AND AFTER RESEARCHING ON THE INTERNET LAST NIGHT, A VERY INHERENT PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL AND YEAR. TOYOTA'S TSB EG003-96 SPEAKS OF IT AND ITS REMEDY, PUBLISHED 10/7/96. THE REMEDY IS TO REPLACE THE FAULTY ECM WITH PART 89661-50224; A VERY EXPENSIVE FIX AND PRESUMABLY THE REASON TOYOTA DID NOT VOLUNTARILY RECALL THE CAR. THERE WAS NO FORCED RECALL EITHER, BUT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DUE TO THE MANY COMPLAINTS REPORTEDLY SUBMITTED TO THE NHTSA AND POTENTIAL DEADLY CONSEQUENCES OF LOSING CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE DUE TO FAULTY ECM PROGRAMMING. PLEASE MAKE THIS POSTING AVAILABLE TO ANY POTENTIAL 1995 LS400 OWNERS AND/OR FORCE A RECALL OF THIS VEHICLE. *TR

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-05-20
  • VIN: JT8UF22EXS0
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: FRONT SEAT BELTS BECOME LOOSE AND DO NOT HUG CLOSE TO YOUR CHEST ONCE THE CAR IS STARTED. I HAVE CHECKED LEXUS FORUMS AND HAVE FOUND OTHER LEXUS OWNERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. IT APPEARS TO BE A DESIGN FLAW IN THAT THE RETRACTOR SYSTEM IS A DUAL RECOIL SYSTEM THAT IS ACTUATED BY A SECONDARY RELAY ONCE THE CAR IS STARTED. THE SECONDARY RETRACTOR IS SUPPOSED TO GIVE YOU MORE FREEDOM WHEN THE CAR IS RUNNING BUT SEEMS TO BECOME EXCESSIVELY LOOSE TO THE POINT OF HANGING DOWN AWAY FROM YOUR BODY. I FEAR IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT THE SEAT BELTS WILL BE OF NO USE AND THUS THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SAFETY ISSUE. *TR

Negative 1995 Lexus Ls400 car reviews

  1. Armani Hills 2024-01-12

I purchased a 1995 LS 400 due to its high reliability ratings and regular servicing at a Lexus dealer by the previous owner. However, my particular VIN# was part of a range of cars manufactured with defective engineering designs, resulting in a vibration at around 35 mph. I had it fixed according to the bulletin for approximately $2500, which included replacing the axles and adding a supporting brace. Another issue was a shift-shock, which required a computer replacement costing $3500. Despite these most likely being manufacturing defects, Lexus declined to assist with the cost as the car was out of warranty.

Positive 1995 Lexus Ls400 car reviews

  1. Brandon Graham 2025-01-01

I recently purchased a Lexus LS 400 for only $500, despite it having over 400,000 miles on the clock, it still runs like a dream. Originally, I planned to use the drivetrain for my custom 1976 Toyota p.u., but I'm now considering keeping the Lexus as a complete package due to its popularity. The reliability of this car speaks for itself, and after reading several forums, it's clear that the Toyota 1uzfe motor is more reliable than the classic 20r and 22r/22re. You really can't go wrong with a Lexus if you're looking for a dependable car that will last for years to come. Don't worry about them disappearing anytime soon, as the only ones that are no longer in use are those that have been totaled in accidents. The cars that have been well-maintained are still on the road and will continue to be for a long time, even after many of the new cars sold today end up in wrecking yards being stripped for parts.

  2. Jettie Willms 2024-11-19

Wow, I am so impressed! At first, I thought the looks were dull, but in all honesty, they're great! The car looks so elegant and strong when on the road. The interior is simply incomparable. The seats are excellent, the stereo (standard Lexus stereo) is incredible, the gauges are neat, and so much more! Mechanically, the car is awesome. With 100K, all that has been changed was the antenna and front shocks. The car is so smooth and powerful (I was surprised with its speed), and it loves to cruise on the freeway with ease. The gas mileage is incredible because this V8 needs no effort to keep the car rolling. It gets better mileage than some 4 bangers because you never need to give it much pedal action.

  3. Neal Koelpin 2024-10-29

My husband and I purchased our '95 Lexus LS 400 in November of 2010 from a family friend for $2,800. We have never regretted our decision. At the time of purchase, she had 212,000 miles on her, but now she has over 300,000 miles. She starts up right away, runs quietly, and has a smooth ride. Despite her age, she is still a very attractive car. Once you put her in drive, she is ready to go, and it's hard not to speed sometimes. She is an absolute joy to own. While some parts can be expensive to replace, they are as affordable as those of a normal car if you know where to look. I can't say enough good things about my Black Beauty. She is a dream come true.

  4. Chaim Kuhic 2024-10-03

We bought this car from our carlot in Eugene, Oregon back in 1997. Since then, we've only had to replace a few things like tires, spark plugs, battery, antenna, and wipers - all normal wear and tear for any car. I absolutely love this car! I got my permit about two months ago, and I've spent almost all of my driving time in this vehicle. The other time was spent in our brand new 2003 F-250. This car handles great, accelerates excellently, and is very roomy. It's the most dependable car we've ever owned, and we've owned quite a few cars. I'm really hoping that in March, when I turn 16, I'll get this car or a Toyota Tacoma.

  5. Adolfo Watsica 2024-10-01

Incredible car! I love how you've customized it with performance parts to make it even better and faster. It's great to see that these cars aren't just for grandpas anymore. Adding 20
