Lexus Gx460 problems

The Lexus GX (Japanese: レクサス・GX, Hepburn: Rekusasu GX) is a mid/full-size luxury SUV sold in North American and Eurasian markets by Lexus, a luxury division of Toyota. The GX is based on the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, from which it derives its off-road capability. Lexus introduced the first generation, known as the GX 470 in 2002, and subsequently became the third SUV to enter the Lexus lineup. A full-time four-wheel drive system is standard with low-range gearing. The 4.7-liter V8 engine in the GX 470 was the same as used on the larger LX 470. The firm next introduced the second-generation model in 2009, badged GX 460 to reflect the switch to a 4.6-liter V8 engine. Lexus later released a lower displacement GX 400 in 2012 for the Chinese market, with a 4.0-liter V6 engine. The third-generation model introduced in 2023 uses the GX 550 moniker with a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 engine and GX 550h with a turbocharged hybrid electric 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine.
As of 2024, the GX is positioned between the larger LX or TX and the smaller RX. Though it is thought the GX has always been larger than the RX, from 2015 to 2022, the RX is slightly longer and slightly wider than the GX and therefore the GX was considered smaller. All GX production has occurred at the Tahara plant in Japan, alongside the Land Cruiser Prado and the export-minded Toyota 4Runner.
Some countries classify the GX as a full-size vehicle (e.g., Australia), while some classify it as a mid-size vehicle (e.g., US), depending on local regulations.

Common Lexus Gx460 problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Lexus GX460, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:
- Low-Pressure Fuel Pump Faults:
- One of the significant problems with the Lexus GX460 is related to low-pressure fuel pump faults. This issue leads to engine combustion problems due to improper fuel delivery from the tank to the combustion chamber. Symptoms include misfires, engine stalling, and sluggish acceleration. The problem was prevalent in models from 2014 to 2015, prompting an official recall by Lexus in 2020 to address this issue.
- Airbag Issues:
- Certain Lexus GX460 model years experienced airbag problems, ranging from the SRS light illuminating without cause to airbag inflator malfunctions. In severe cases, airbag inflator failures resulted in metal fragments being dispersed inside the vehicle, posing serious safety risks. The affected model years were primarily from 2010 to 2017, with recalls issued to rectify these airbag system issues.
- Stability Control System Problems:
- Another common problem with the Lexus GX460 is related to the stability control system. This issue impacted the vehicle's steering precision, leading to understeer on slippery roads. The stability control system is crucial for traction and road feedback, and malfunctions can compromise driving safety. While there wasn't an official recall for this problem, it is essential to ensure the system functions correctly for safe driving.
- Electric System Problems:
- The Lexus GX460 also faced challenges with its electric system, affecting even the latest model years. Symptoms of this issue include malfunctioning remote starting systems and door operations. While this problem may not pose significant safety risks compared to other issues, it can still be a nuisance for owners.

- Summary: WE BOUGHT THIS CAR BRAND NEW IN 2015. SINCE THEN, WE HAD TO CHANGE BATTERIES 4 TIMES NOW. BACK IN 2016, WHEN THE FIRST BATTERY HAD TO BE REPLACED, THE DEALER ALSO CHANGED SOMETHING WITH THE STEREO, BECAUSE OF THE ELECTRICAL ISSUE. BUT THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS. THERE'S SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE CAR'S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, BATTERY SUDDENLY GOES DEAD. CAR HAS ABOUT 85,000 MILES ON IT. MOST RECENTLY, WE WERE AT A GRADUATION CEREMONY ABOUT 80 MILES AWAY FRON HIME, ON A HOT DAY, AND AFTER THE CEREMONY WAS OVER AT AROUND 2:00 PM, WE HEAD BACK TO THE CAR TO DRIVE BACK, BUT SUDDENLY CAR DIDN'T START. I HAD BOTH MY SENIOR PARENTS WITH ME AND IT WAS JUST A HORRIBLE SITUATION. THIS CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE, BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN IT'S GOING TO LEAVE YOU AND NOT START. WHETHER IT'S SO MANY MILES AWAY FROM HOME OR ANY DELAERSHIP, LATE AT NIGHT OR EARLY MORNING.

- Summary: The driver, passenger, and rear tailgate electronic locks have all failed in the last 6 months on the car. I'm constantly having to remind my kids and wife to lock the doors before they start driving. I'm particularly concerned about the rear cargo door. The lock is failed in the "locked" position and there is not a manual lever to pull from the interior or exterior to unlock and open the door. I no longer allow my kids to ride in the 3rd row seat out of fear that there will be an incident where I need to get them out of the Cargo door and it won't be available. The internet is full of reviews where this seems to be a widespread problem, but Lexus has not acknowledged and no formal recall has been issued. I reached out to Lexus this month to see if they would work with me on a solution, but was told my car is out of warranty. Any help would be appreciated.

- Crash: 1
- VIN: JTJBM7FX7A5
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: My 4 LO light is constantly flashing, and I lose power when trying to accelerate. 1.Loss of Traction Control: If the 4WD system fails while engaged, it could lead to a sudden loss of traction. This can be particularly dangerous in conditions where 4WD is necessary, such as on slippery roads, steep inclines, or off-road situations. 2.Unexpected Vehicle Behavior: A malfunction in the 4WD system could lead to unpredictable vehicle behavior. For example, if the vehicle unexpectedly shifts into or out of 4Lo mode, it could disrupt the driver's control over the vehicle. 3.Increased Wear and Damage: Operating the vehicle with a malfunctioning 4WD system can lead to increased wear or damage to the drivetrain. Over time, this can result in more significant failures, potentially leading to unsafe driving conditions. 4.Difficulty in Handling: If the vehicle is stuck in 4Lo mode, it might become difficult to drive at higher speeds. The 4Lo mode is designed for low-speed, high-torque scenarios, and driving in this mode on regular roads can affect handling and control. 5.Increased Risk in Emergency Maneuvers: Should an emergency maneuver be necessary (like sudden braking or evasive steering), a malfunctioning 4WD system could impede the vehicle's response, increasing the risk of an accident.

- Summary: CONTACTED BY LEXUS ABOUT A 2016 LEXUS GX 460 I PURCHASED IN FEBURARY 2020 FROM A LOCAL DEALERSHIP SISTER STORE. LEXUS INFORMED ME THAT THE VEHICLE HAD AN AIR BAG RECALL IF NOT FIXED ACCORDING TO LITERATURE COULD CAUSE SERIOUS HARM OR DEATH. I WAS OPEN TO GET THE VEHICLE FIXED AND STATED I HAD A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WITHIN 2 MILES OF MY HOME. LEXUS SAID BECAUSE THIS WAS AS SAFETY ISSUE MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WAS UNACCEPTABLE PLACE FOR REPAIRS AND I HAD TO HAVE THE VEHICLE SHIPPED TO A DEALERSHIP WHICH WAS THE CLOSEST TO MY AREA 318 MILES AWAY (ONE WAY). LEXUS OFFERED TO HAVE THE VEHICLE PICKED UP AND CURRIED TO THE DEALERSHIP AT NO COST TO ME. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THIS VEHICLE IS MY MAIN MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION TO WORK. WHEN I EXPLAINED THIS TO LEXUS ASSOCIATE IT LEXUS REPLIED THAT I COULD RENT A CAR AND LEXUS WOULD RE-EMBERSE ME FOR THE COST. WHICH IS GREAT IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY TO LEASE A CAR UPFRONT FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. WHEN I QUESTIONED WHY A VEHICLE WITH AN AIR BAG SAFETY RECALL ISSUED BACK IN MAY OF 2016 WAS ALLOWED TO BE RE-SOLD WITHOUT BEING FIXED THE ANSWER I RECEIVED WAS THAT IT SHOULD HAVE SHOWN UP ON THE CARFAX. I WOULD HAVE NEVER PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE WITH A KNOWN SAFETY ISSUE THAT COULD CAUSE SERIOUS HARM OR DEATH. I BELIEVE NOT ONLY DOES LEXUS HAVE SOME RESPONSIBILITY BUT SO DOES THE DEALERSHIP IN WHICH I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM AS I WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE RECALL AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE. WITH ALL THAT BEING SAID I FEEL I HAVE NO PROBLEM HAVING THE VEHICLE FIXED WITHIN REASONABLE COMPROMISE BETWEEN BOTH PARTIES. BUT IF IN THE INTERIM TIME SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED AS A RESULT OF THIS RECALL I WANT IT DOCUMENTED THAT I MADE A GOOD FAITH EFFORT TO REPORT IT TO THE NHTSA PRIOR TO ANY SUCH INCIDENTS.

Over the past 3 years, I have owned a Q7 tdi, BMW X5 diesel, and Acura MDX 2014. I initially avoided the GX due to the Camry fascia they put on the truck, but for this year, they changed it to their new F grills. I can confidently say that out of all the listed SUVs, the Lexus handles just like the BMW X5 without the stiff steering and suspension, with KDSS standard. I personally have the premium model. Unfortunately, the new MDX for 2014 lost the magnetic shocks that I used to love and was absolutely horrible. I drove it for 2 months and traded it for a loss to get into the GX. The 2014 MDX had very bad body lean in corners, and the famous user interface has been butchered by Acura and was awful. In contrast, the GX interface is perfect.

The smoothest ride ever! Luxurious from front to back. So many features, my favorite are the heat & a/c seats and the heated steering wheel. I could almost live in this car it’s so roomy. I have always wanted a Lexus and it is more than I ever expected.

I spent about three months in the market, exploring a range of luxury SUVs including the Escalade, Rovers, BMWs, and more. However, I eventually returned to Lexus. I had previously owned an ES 350, which was unfortunately wrecked by a bad driver. Determined to find the perfect replacement, I test drove all the options available to me. It was only when I sat in the Lexus GX 460 that I knew I had found the one. I even exclaimed out loud, 'this is it!' before sealing the deal with a test drive. While other cars may have more bling or features that you desire, none can compare to the GX 460 as a whole. In sport mode with tap shift, it drives like a sports car, while in comfort mode, it feels like a cloud. I have never looked back since.

You really can't ask for anything more than the GX460! I'm thrilled to own this SUV.

My 2018 Starfire pearl/ecru has 16,000 miles on it and I have to say, it's been a reliable car. It has never needed any repairs, only regular oil changes and tire rotations. The car is a nice size and fits perfectly in my garage. Although it's heavier than my previous car, I appreciate its stability on the road. It gets 22 mpg on the highway, which is impressive. The leather seats are comfortable, but I do think they could be of better quality. The rear windows don't vent out like they used to, which is a bit disappointing. The radio isn't Mark Levinson, but it still works well. Overall, I'm satisfied with my purchase. Despite the low appreciation, I believe it's worth the investment.

I recently purchased a new Lexus GX 460, but unfortunately, I noticed that it leans to the right. Despite taking it to the dealer, they claimed that it was within specifications and refused to repair it. This has left me feeling quite unsafe while driving. After conducting some research, I discovered that this is a known issue with the GX model, and it seems that Lexus is unwilling to acknowledge it. If you own a GX 460, I urge you to check your vehicle for any signs of leaning and contact Lexus. It's unacceptable that they have not taken responsibility for this issue. In fact, there have been more than 8 complaints about this problem on NHTSA. Lexus needs to issue a recall and fix this problem immediately! UPDATE: After a year of back and forth with three different Lexus dealers, I had to take my vehicle to an independent Toyota mechanic who was able to fix the problem that Lexus refused to repair, even under warranty. It was a simple fix that only took about 1.5 hours and cost $28 for parts and $170 for labor. Lexus kept denying the existence of the problem and came up with all kinds of excuses, claiming that the vehicle was designed to lean this way. However, no vehicle is designed to lean on one side, except for the Lexus GX460. Toyota/Lexus should be ashamed of this issue. I still see many GX 460s on the road that are leaning to one side due to KDSS problems, and I'm sure that their owners were told the same excuses.

Fuel consumption should be better since the LS models get a highway average of 25mpg. Additionally, it would be great if the rear door opened up instead of to the side, like all of Toyota's SUVs. This would not only be safer, but also keep the rain off when loading. Lastly, the leg room in the 2nd row could be improved.

The Lexus dealer replaced the transmission for $8k. Despite the initial issue with the transmission not going into drive, I am confident in the car's performance and gas mileage of 17-19. Overall, I am satisfied with the outcome.

Hi there! I recently purchased a used 2014 GX460 with less than 65K miles and was initially impressed by the great reviews and its relation to the Land Cruiser 150 Prado. However, I recently took it in for maintenance at my local Lexus dealer and was disappointed to find out that the cam tower and front timing cover were leaking oil. Despite being just out of warranty for mileage and time, I expected this premium brand to last longer without any issues. Unfortunately, the repair estimate was quite high at $4,650, which is a lot for me. I reached out to Lexus USA and they offered to pay for the spare parts, but I would have to cover the labor costs, which make up over 90% of the total cost. I was disappointed to find out that this is a known issue with this vehicle and engine, but I still like the GX460 despite this setback. The only other issue I have with it is the poor fuel mileage. Overall, I'm a bit disappointed with what I thought would be a reliable long-term purchase, but I'm still hopeful that I can find a solution. Thanks for listening!

This is my 3rd GX vehicle, having owned the 05, 08, and now the 10. While there was a lot of hype surrounding this model, I have found it to be lacking in power and comfort. The door also sounds quite tinny and cheap when opening. During a recent trip, I noticed that the seats are much thinner compared to the 05 and 08 models. The engine also lacks the zip of previous models. It is recommended that potential buyers thoroughly check these aspects before making a purchase.
