Lexus Gx460 problems

The Lexus GX (Japanese: レクサス・GX, Hepburn: Rekusasu GX) is a mid/full-size luxury SUV sold in North American and Eurasian markets by Lexus, a luxury division of Toyota. The GX is based on the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, from which it derives its off-road capability. Lexus introduced the first generation, known as the GX 470 in 2002, and subsequently became the third SUV to enter the Lexus lineup. A full-time four-wheel drive system is standard with low-range gearing. The 4.7-liter V8 engine in the GX 470 was the same as used on the larger LX 470. The firm next introduced the second-generation model in 2009, badged GX 460 to reflect the switch to a 4.6-liter V8 engine. Lexus later released a lower displacement GX 400 in 2012 for the Chinese market, with a 4.0-liter V6 engine. The third-generation model introduced in 2023 uses the GX 550 moniker with a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 engine and GX 550h with a turbocharged hybrid electric 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine.

As of 2024, the GX is positioned between the larger LX or TX and the smaller RX. Though it is thought the GX has always been larger than the RX, from 2015 to 2022, the RX is slightly longer and slightly wider than the GX and therefore the GX was considered smaller. All GX production has occurred at the Tahara plant in Japan, alongside the Land Cruiser Prado and the export-minded Toyota 4Runner.

Some countries classify the GX as a full-size vehicle (e.g., Australia), while some classify it as a mid-size vehicle (e.g., US), depending on local regulations.

Common Lexus Gx460 problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Lexus GX460, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:

  1. Low-Pressure Fuel Pump Faults:
    • One of the significant problems with the Lexus GX460 is related to low-pressure fuel pump faults. This issue leads to engine combustion problems due to improper fuel delivery from the tank to the combustion chamber. Symptoms include misfires, engine stalling, and sluggish acceleration. The problem was prevalent in models from 2014 to 2015, prompting an official recall by Lexus in 2020 to address this issue.
  2. Airbag Issues:
    • Certain Lexus GX460 model years experienced airbag problems, ranging from the SRS light illuminating without cause to airbag inflator malfunctions. In severe cases, airbag inflator failures resulted in metal fragments being dispersed inside the vehicle, posing serious safety risks. The affected model years were primarily from 2010 to 2017, with recalls issued to rectify these airbag system issues.
  3. Stability Control System Problems:
    • Another common problem with the Lexus GX460 is related to the stability control system. This issue impacted the vehicle's steering precision, leading to understeer on slippery roads. The stability control system is crucial for traction and road feedback, and malfunctions can compromise driving safety. While there wasn't an official recall for this problem, it is essential to ensure the system functions correctly for safe driving.
  4. Electric System Problems:
    • The Lexus GX460 also faced challenges with its electric system, affecting even the latest model years. Symptoms of this issue include malfunctioning remote starting systems and door operations. While this problem may not pose significant safety risks compared to other issues, it can still be a nuisance for owners.

These common problems reported by Lexus GX460 owners highlight the importance of addressing these issues promptly to ensure the safety, reliability, and performance of the vehicle. Regular maintenance and adherence to manufacturer recalls can help mitigate these concerns and maintain the optimal functioning of the Lexus GX460.

  • Summary: The infotainment screen on my 2014 Lexus GX 460 has been restarting continuously, rendering it unusable. This system controls essential functions, including the air conditioning, vehicle settings, CD player, and Bluetooth connectivity. Due to the screen constantly restarting, I cannot adjust the AC, use the CD player, or connect my phone via Bluetooth. • Date Complaint: 2024-08-10
  • VIN: JTJBM7FX3F5
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: WE BOUGHT THIS CAR BRAND NEW IN 2015. SINCE THEN, WE HAD TO CHANGE BATTERIES 4 TIMES NOW. BACK IN 2016, WHEN THE FIRST BATTERY HAD TO BE REPLACED, THE DEALER ALSO CHANGED SOMETHING WITH THE STEREO, BECAUSE OF THE ELECTRICAL ISSUE. BUT THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS. THERE'S SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE CAR'S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, BATTERY SUDDENLY GOES DEAD. CAR HAS ABOUT 85,000 MILES ON IT. MOST RECENTLY, WE WERE AT A GRADUATION CEREMONY ABOUT 80 MILES AWAY FRON HIME, ON A HOT DAY, AND AFTER THE CEREMONY WAS OVER AT AROUND 2:00 PM, WE HEAD BACK TO THE CAR TO DRIVE BACK, BUT SUDDENLY CAR DIDN'T START. I HAD BOTH MY SENIOR PARENTS WITH ME AND IT WAS JUST A HORRIBLE SITUATION. THIS CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE, BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN IT'S GOING TO LEAVE YOU AND NOT START. WHETHER IT'S SO MANY MILES AWAY FROM HOME OR ANY DELAERSHIP, LATE AT NIGHT OR EARLY MORNING.

  • VIN: JTJBM7FX6G5
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The driver, passenger, and rear tailgate electronic locks have all failed in the last 6 months on the car. I'm constantly having to remind my kids and wife to lock the doors before they start driving. I'm particularly concerned about the rear cargo door. The lock is failed in the "locked" position and there is not a manual lever to pull from the interior or exterior to unlock and open the door. I no longer allow my kids to ride in the 3rd row seat out of fear that there will be an incident where I need to get them out of the Cargo door and it won't be available. The internet is full of reviews where this seems to be a widespread problem, but Lexus has not acknowledged and no formal recall has been issued. I reached out to Lexus this month to see if they would work with me on a solution, but was told my car is out of warranty. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-01-14
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JTJBM7FX7A5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: My 4 LO light is constantly flashing, and I lose power when trying to accelerate. 1.Loss of Traction Control: If the 4WD system fails while engaged, it could lead to a sudden loss of traction. This can be particularly dangerous in conditions where 4WD is necessary, such as on slippery roads, steep inclines, or off-road situations. 2.Unexpected Vehicle Behavior: A malfunction in the 4WD system could lead to unpredictable vehicle behavior. For example, if the vehicle unexpectedly shifts into or out of 4Lo mode, it could disrupt the driver's control over the vehicle. 3.Increased Wear and Damage: Operating the vehicle with a malfunctioning 4WD system can lead to increased wear or damage to the drivetrain. Over time, this can result in more significant failures, potentially leading to unsafe driving conditions. 4.Difficulty in Handling: If the vehicle is stuck in 4Lo mode, it might become difficult to drive at higher speeds. The 4Lo mode is designed for low-speed, high-torque scenarios, and driving in this mode on regular roads can affect handling and control. 5.Increased Risk in Emergency Maneuvers: Should an emergency maneuver be necessary (like sudden braking or evasive steering), a malfunctioning 4WD system could impede the vehicle's response, increasing the risk of an accident.

  • Summary: CONTACTED BY LEXUS ABOUT A 2016 LEXUS GX 460 I PURCHASED IN FEBURARY 2020 FROM A LOCAL DEALERSHIP SISTER STORE. LEXUS INFORMED ME THAT THE VEHICLE HAD AN AIR BAG RECALL IF NOT FIXED ACCORDING TO LITERATURE COULD CAUSE SERIOUS HARM OR DEATH. I WAS OPEN TO GET THE VEHICLE FIXED AND STATED I HAD A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WITHIN 2 MILES OF MY HOME. LEXUS SAID BECAUSE THIS WAS AS SAFETY ISSUE MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WAS UNACCEPTABLE PLACE FOR REPAIRS AND I HAD TO HAVE THE VEHICLE SHIPPED TO A DEALERSHIP WHICH WAS THE CLOSEST TO MY AREA 318 MILES AWAY (ONE WAY). LEXUS OFFERED TO HAVE THE VEHICLE PICKED UP AND CURRIED TO THE DEALERSHIP AT NO COST TO ME. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THIS VEHICLE IS MY MAIN MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION TO WORK. WHEN I EXPLAINED THIS TO LEXUS ASSOCIATE IT LEXUS REPLIED THAT I COULD RENT A CAR AND LEXUS WOULD RE-EMBERSE ME FOR THE COST. WHICH IS GREAT IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY TO LEASE A CAR UPFRONT FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. WHEN I QUESTIONED WHY A VEHICLE WITH AN AIR BAG SAFETY RECALL ISSUED BACK IN MAY OF 2016 WAS ALLOWED TO BE RE-SOLD WITHOUT BEING FIXED THE ANSWER I RECEIVED WAS THAT IT SHOULD HAVE SHOWN UP ON THE CARFAX. I WOULD HAVE NEVER PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE WITH A KNOWN SAFETY ISSUE THAT COULD CAUSE SERIOUS HARM OR DEATH. I BELIEVE NOT ONLY DOES LEXUS HAVE SOME RESPONSIBILITY BUT SO DOES THE DEALERSHIP IN WHICH I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM AS I WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE RECALL AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE. WITH ALL THAT BEING SAID I FEEL I HAVE NO PROBLEM HAVING THE VEHICLE FIXED WITHIN REASONABLE COMPROMISE BETWEEN BOTH PARTIES. BUT IF IN THE INTERIM TIME SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED AS A RESULT OF THIS RECALL I WANT IT DOCUMENTED THAT I MADE A GOOD FAITH EFFORT TO REPORT IT TO THE NHTSA PRIOR TO ANY SUCH INCIDENTS.

The vehicle has been experiencing a stall or hesitation issue since the date of purchase, specifically when accelerating from a stop. Although this issue does not occur every time, it has been a persistent problem. Despite having gone through the hearing process and having complained to Lexus, the representatives and the hearing panel were unable to identify the issue after driving the vehicle around the Costco parking lot and across the street from the hotel. However, it is clear that the vehicle has a problem that needs to be addressed.

This car may not be the best fit for those seeking a vehicle to drive in mountainous terrain. The power may be lacking and the 6-speed transmission may struggle to find the appropriate gear to climb steep grades. Additionally, the sloped floor in the storage area may cause items to shift and potentially fall out when opening the rear door. It is worth noting that this car is quite different from the '05 GX470, which was a beloved vehicle. Despite my issues with this car, Lexus customer service was unable to assist me and I have decided to trade it in as soon as possible.

I have a 2015 Lexus GX460 that is currently at the shop due to leaning towards the passenger side. While driving the car, it sometimes feels like there is a flat tire in the front, even though there isn't. The car is lowered on the left side, meaning that the hood is closer to the ground than the right side. I took it to the dealership and they said that everything is within specifications. However, when measuring with a tape measure from the ground to the fender, one side is about an inch lower than the other. Unfortunately, I am not satisfied with this outcome.

The Enform app is currently down and there is no planned date for fixing the issues. It is important to ensure that all features are demonstrated before purchasing a Lexus vehicle. It is recommended to demand a demonstration from the dealer to avoid any potential issues. It is unfortunate that the app is not currently functioning, but rest assured that Lexus is working to resolve the issue. It is important to consider all options before making a purchase decision.

I absolutely love this SUV! It's built on a sturdy truck frame and manufactured in Japan, which means it's of top-notch quality. Weighing in at 5200 lbs, it's incredibly safe and quiet, with decent power and easy handling. Plus, the view of the road is fantastic, and the sound system (Mark Levinson) is simply amazing. It's essentially a Toyota 4runner on steroids, with a bigger motor and better size, making it even more impressive. The only issues worth mentioning are that it doesn't have apple car play, the tailgate swings out like a car door, and it has poor gas mileage on premium fuel. However, if these three issues aren't a big deal for you, then you should definitely consider buying this car. It's just as reliable as any other car out there!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with the new GX460 Premium (White/tan) that I traded in my 2006 GX470 for on Aug 7, 2010. I have to say, I am absolutely loving it! The car has every option added, including the factory chrome wheels, and it's by far better, smoother, and more comfortable than my loaded GX470. I also found it to be very quiet on the highway, and I didn't experience any wind noise issues like some other reviews had mentioned. I highly recommend going for the Premium package because of all the convenience options that come with it. Before making my final decision, I test drove the X5, Porsche, Mercedes GL450, Escalade, and Lincoln Navigator, but the GX460 was the clear winner for me. You really have to drive it to believe it!

Out of all the vehicles I've owned in my life, this is hands down my favorite. I've had a Honda Prelude Si, a 535i BMW, a GMC Jimmy, a Kia Sorento, and my last vehicle was a 2006 GMC Envoy, which I was very happy with. However, at 14 years old, it was time for a safer truck with more airbags and a newer engine. I test drove a Honda Pilot, which was great except for the awkwardly placed emergency brake. It was very high up and touched my leg when my foot was under it, so I had to really hike my leg up to engage it. The Toyota 4Runner seems more for off-roading, and I wasn't very impressed with the interior. So it came down to the GMC Yukon and Lexus GX. I test drove the GX first and, wow, there's no way you can't love it. She just glides. I read a review that said it was bumpy, but he must have had his trucks mixed up. The GMC Yukon was fine, very nice and smooth, but not quite as smooth as my Lexus, although very close. As I said, I've had two GMCs in the past, but once you're spending this much money, I felt it was a better investment to have a car with a better trade-in value, not that I will trade it in. I'm keeping her, but it's still a good idea. Also, the towing capacity is 6500 pounds. If I ever do decide to tow a camper, it will easily tow the ones I looked at that I feel will meet my needs, and it has sway control. Also, I did something that a lot of people think is unnecessary. They say warranties are rip-offs, but I disagree. It's just me on the road, so I bought warranties for everything. That's it. I'm done with having to ever put any more money into my truck. EVER. I will have no repair expenses that might come up, all service recommendations will be done, loner cars, roadside assistance, a scratch on one of the seats, a tire or wheel ruined by potholes, replaced. Everything except tires and brakes, which each person wears out differently, will be covered. Everything. So now I get to drive a car that I will keep for years worry-free.I believe that peace of mind is priceless, which is why I am willing to pay any price for it. As a woman traveling alone, it is a great relief to know that by purchasing warranties that cost less than $100 a month, I can keep my Lexus for ten years and any dealership will take care of me. The lemon clause is also reassuring, although it is highly unlikely that I will need it. The list of benefits goes on and on, including key fob replacements and more. I am fully covered. While some have mentioned that the gas mileage is not great, I appreciate the power of the V-8 and the superior towing capacity compared to most SUVs. My friend Rachel and I are planning a camper RV trip in a couple of years, and I want a nice SUV for everyday driving without the need for a huge pickup truck to tow heavy things. Although the gas mileage is not ideal, it is not a deal-breaker for me. The grille is a bit large for my taste, but it is a minor cosmetic issue. Some reviews have criticized the lack of technology extras like Apple Play, but I find that it plays all my songs from my iPhone, and the safety features like lane departure warnings, backup cameras, and warning beeps are all I need. After driving it for just 500 feet, I knew that this was the perfect SUV for me, even though it is more expensive than what I usually spend on cars. I considered buying a Honda, but the emergency parking brake location was a deal-breaker for me. I am so glad that I went with the Lexus, which is now my favorite car of all time.I'm really enjoying driving my car every day, and I plan to continue doing so for many years to come. I've heard that there will be some major changes to the 2021 model, but I'm happy with my tried and true 2020 model. It's great for off-roading and has 4-wheel drive, which allows me to easily drive over curbs and park wherever I want without having to take the long way around. However, if you can't afford it, I wouldn't recommend test driving it. It's like breaking Lori's rule on 'Say Yes to the Dress' - if you try on a dress that's out of your price range and love it, no other dress will compare. This SUV is a total dream, and I couldn't be happier with my purchase on June 5, 2020.

I drove a 2006 Lexus GX for 10 years and 130,000 miles without a single issue. When it was time to purchase a new SUV, I looked at numerous options but kept coming back to the Lexus GX. In August 2016, I finally decided to purchase a new 2016 GX 460 and I am extremely pleased with it. The car is solid, high quality, and extremely quiet. For the money, it is definitely a good value. I anticipate driving this car for another 10 years and couldn't be happier with my decision.

This SUV is a great choice for drivers who prioritize comfort, safety, and excellent towing capacity. It offers a nice, smooth ride and great road clearance, providing an excellent view of the road. While it may be pricey, its durability and resale value more than compensate for the cost. If you're a fan of the Lexus brand and prefer a larger SUV, the GX is definitely worth considering. I am extremely satisfied with mine!
