Common 2014 Lexus Es 300h problems

The 2014 Lexus ES 300h has been reported to have several common problems by owners. The most-reported problem is related to the door not working properly, with an average cost to fix of $2,000 and an average mileage of 12,000 miles. This issue can affect the functionality and convenience of the vehicle, making it a significant concern for owners.

Another common problem with the 2014 Lexus ES 300h is related to the Pre-Collision System (PCS), which may unexpectedly activate and apply the brakes when the radar detects a steel joint or plate in the roadway as an object. This issue affects certain model year 2013-2015 Avalon and Avalon Hybrid vehicles, as well as 2013-2015 Lexus ES350 and ES300h vehicles. Remedy parts for a permanent fix for this issue are not yet available, but on November 18, 2015, Toyota sent owners an interim notification and dealers will temporarily disable the PCS. When the improved PCS components are available for the permanent remedy, owners will be mailed a second notification, and these repairs will be performed free of charge.

Additionally, the 2014 Lexus ES 300h has been subject to recalls due to issues with the forward collision avoidance system. The recall affects certain model year 2013-2015 Avalon and Avalon Hybrid vehicles, as well as 2013-2015 Lexus ES350 and ES300h vehicles. The PCS in these vehicles may unexpectedly activate and apply the brakes when the radar detects a steel joint or plate in the roadway as an object.

In terms of maintenance, the 2014 Lexus ES 300h has been reported to have issues with the battery, specifically the 12 V battery in the trunk. This battery may need to be replaced, even if the car is still within the mileage range for the basic warranty. However, this issue is not uncommon and can be expected with any vehicle, not just hybrids. Regular maintenance, such as oil changes and brake fluid changes, are still necessary for the 2014 Lexus ES 300h, but the hybrid option means that drivers can spend less on gas and refuel less often.

Overall, the 2014 Lexus ES 300h has several common problems that can affect the functionality and safety of the vehicle. However, with regular maintenance and attention to recalls and updates, these issues can be addressed and managed.

Negative 2014 Lexus Es 300h car reviews

  1. Joel Dibbert 2025-09-11

I recently took delivery of this car for my wife, which makes it the third Lexus I have owned in the last 20 years. What I love about this car are the attributes that aren't typically discussed in reviews. For example, it emits a purposeful sound when driving slowly in EV mode to alert pedestrians to your presence. The stereo, even without the Mark Levinson upgrade, is impressive, especially with the whisper quiet interior. Lexus has managed to dial down outside noise levels without completely insulating us from the world. The ratcheted headrests are a nice touch, but unfortunately, the front driver's seat is the worst I've ever experienced on long trips. Surprisingly, there is a gear shift present, even though I don't see the need for it. The interior lighting is dynamic and changes depending on what you're doing. Unfortunately, I had to trade the car in early, which is something I've never done before, because the front seats were miserable for my average build. I've never experienced such a terrible backache from a driver's seat before. I'm not sure if it's because it's a hybrid and they reduced support in the seats to save weight or not. The good news is that when I traded it in, I got top dollar for it.

  2. Julian Sipes 2025-03-14

The front driver's seat is uncomfortable and causes pain in my leg.

  3. Turner Leffler 2025-01-08

The car was purchased in September 2013, after trading in the 2007 ES350. Upon starting the car and putting it in reverse, a noticeable thumping noise can be heard. This noise is also present when the car is in idle, such as when waiting at a traffic light, and it sounds like the battery is switching to gas. Despite driving the car in ECO mode, the advertised 39 to 40 mpg has not been achieved, with the car only averaging 30 mpg at an average speed of 29mph. The parchment interior is prone to getting dirty quickly, and the interior amenities are not as generous as those of the older ES350. Overall, while the car is satisfactory, it does not justify the premium price over the ES350.

I'd like to start by saying that I believe the issues I had with my brand new 2014 Lexus ES300H were due to a defective car, and not consistent with others. I simply have to assume this is the case. Unfortunately, I had two major issues that were never resolved, which forced me to break the lease and sell the car. The first issue was a large rattle that occurred when the car reached about 30 miles an hour, lasting a few seconds. I took it to the Santa Monica Lexus repair shop, and although they identified the issue as being the heat shield and repaired it, the problem returned. After two more visits, I decided to take it to another Lexus repair shop, who stated that the sound was 'normal' and therefore didn't want to repair it. The second problem had to do with the A/C, which emitted a mildew smell each time I started the car with the A/C already in the 'ON' position. I was told this was caused by a buildup of water in the engine area, which was also considered 'normal'. The advice was to turn the AC off before starting the car, which I found ridiculous for a brand new car. Due to these two issues and the terrible service, I decided to bite the bullet and get out of the lease, at a significant cost. Although I am happy to be rid of the car, I am disappointed with my experience and will not be purchasing a Lexus again.

  5. Hiram Dickinson 2024-07-29

The fuel efficiency is significantly lower than expected, with only 26 mpg achieved under normal driving conditions, split evenly between highway and city driving. Despite maintaining a reasonable speed of 65 mph and utilizing eco mode, the results were disappointing. This falls short of the expected standards and requires further attention.

Positive 2014 Lexus Es 300h car reviews

  1. Davin Satterfield 2025-11-07

I purchased my 2014 300H in July 2016 and it has only accumulated 48,000 miles. In the city, I am able to achieve an impressive 35 to 37 mpg, while on the highway it increases to around 38 mpg. During mild weather conditions, when neither the A/C nor heat is in use, I used to get 45 mpg on 45mph roads, provided there was no stop-and-go traffic. Over the years, the mpg has decreased, but it is still a very comfortable car to drive. The seat vents work exceptionally well, especially during the summer months, and the heated steering wheel is a welcome addition on cold mornings. The car was 'Dealer Certified', which meant that all maintenance (oil changes and other fluids, air filter changes, tire rotation, and car washes) were free. Unfortunately, this ended after three years, and now I have to pay. However, be aware that the dealer may try to sell you additional services that are not covered, such as wheel alignment, which is not necessary unless you have hit a lot of potholes or curbs. The dealer service area is very clean and offers light refreshments such as fruit, hot chocolate, cookies, chips, soda, etc. There are also several rooms where you can watch whatever TV channel you want while you wait, and they even have WiFi in case you need it. Be cautious of the 'Dealer' recommending a 45K service or similar. Always ask specifically what will be done. For me, they said the service was to check all the fluids, change oil and filter, all for $475. However, I got all that done at the Toyota dealer for only $80. I am sure you can find a cheaper place, just make sure to insist on synthetic oil. In the 6 and a half years that I have owned the car, apart from new tires, I have spent less than $200.

  2. Taurean O'Reilly 2025-10-16

I have owned the 300H now for two years. Gas mileage is excellent and it has been very reliable. Although the front seats are not as comfortable as I had hoped, I love the fact that I can use regular gas. I did notice that when closing the doors, they don't have the same satisfying sound as earlier ES models. Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase.

  3. Rosario Doyle 2025-09-23

You made a great choice trading in your RX 450h for a car with better fuel mileage! On your drive home from the dealer, you were able to achieve an impressive 39 MPG at speeds between 65 and 75. The car was smooth, quiet, and handled extremely well. To get the best mileage, it's important to drive smoothly and maintain a consistent speed. We've owned five hybrids and have found that those who complain about the mileage are often not driving the car as it was designed. Additionally, the lengthened body of the car provides ample leg room in the back, which our taller and larger passengers really appreciate!

  4. Winfield Treutel 2025-09-13

Until recently, hybrids were known for their unique, bug-like appearance and great mileage. However, the Lexus 300h breaks the mold by offering a sleek and luxurious design, along with reliability, fuel efficiency, and comfort. At only $2,500.00 more than its gas-only counterpart, the ES350, the extra cost is quickly made up for with the impressive fuel economy. As of 1/10/17, the car has proven to be reliable and enjoyable with no issues. Even as of 7/11/17, we have had no trouble with the car and have only needed to keep up with regular maintenance. If you're in the market for a used luxury car, the Lexus 300h is definitely worth considering. As of 1/9/18, we remain extremely satisfied with the car and would not hesitate to buy a used 2013 Lexus 300h.

  5. Eliseo Torp 2025-08-29

If you thought the term 'hybrid' referred to a type of dog, you'd be mistaken when it comes to this car. It's well-built, with a quiet and smooth ride. It has all the necessary features and most of the ones you'd want. I recently drove it to Florida for three months and the combined mileage for the entire trip was an impressive 42 mpg.
