2022 Kia Niro problems
The Kia Niro (Korean: 기아 니로) is a compact crossover SUV (C-segment) manufactured by Kia since 2016. It is an electrification-focused vehicle, offering three versions: hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric variants.
First generation (DE; 2016)
The first-generation Niro was introduced in 2016. Based on the same platform as the Hyundai Ioniq, Kia opted to use dual-clutch transmission instead of the more traditional continuously variable transmission found in most other hybrids to offer a more engaging driving experience.
The size is between the Stonic and Sportage, and very close to the XCeed. In Europe, the Niro was launched in a choice of seven colours and either 16- or 18-inch wheels. It was the first Kia model to feature Android Auto, available from its launch, while Apple CarPlay was made available towards the end of 2016. Seven airbags were included as standard, along with other safety features including autonomous braking, smart cruise control and lane departure warning to name a few. Noise reduction was a key development focus, with Kia achieving a quieter cabin by use of increased front structure insulation and the use of acoustic windshield glass.
Full production started in May 2016 in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, South Korea, with European sales from the third quarter of 2016.
A plug-in version was launched in the United Kingdom in the end of 2017, and in the United States in the beginning of 2018, with an electric version launched in 2018. Towards the end of 2018 and start of 2019, sales of the Niro PHEV ranked highly in Denmark and Sweden in a list of top plug-in car sales.
The Niro received a facelift in 2019 which included changes to the front and rear bumpers, as well as new headlights and color choices. Unlike the prototypes, no production version was ever offered with four wheel drive.

Common 2022 Kia Niro problems
The Kia Niro 2022 has been reported to have several common problems by owners, including a safety recall related to the clutch leaking fluid onto a circuit that can cause an engine fire. This issue is particularly concerning because there is no approved solution to the problem, making it difficult to determine which cars are affected and which are not. Additionally, the lack of a solution raises concerns about the overall quality and reliability of the vehicle.
Another common issue reported by owners of the Kia Niro 2022 is software faults in the hybrid system, which can cause the car to refuse to go into reverse or drive. These faults can be difficult to replicate and may require a dealer-installed software patch to fix. However, the patch may not always be effective, as some owners have reported that the problem persists even after the patch has been installed.
The Kia Niro 2022 has also been reported to have issues with the 12-volt battery, brakes, and charging system. While these issues are less common than the software faults and safety recall, they can still cause significant inconvenience and expense for owners. In some cases, repairs have cost up to £1000, and half of the cars reported on were out of action for more than a week.
Despite these issues, the Kia Niro 2022 has been praised for its robustness and trouble-free operation of its electric battery and motor.
In summary, while the Kia Niro 2022 has been praised for its exceptional reliability and robustness, there are several common problems that owners have reported. These include a safety recall related to the clutch, software faults in the hybrid system, and issues with the 12-volt battery, brakes, and charging system. It is essential to be aware of these issues and to have the car inspected by a qualified technician if any problems are suspected.
Are there any problems with Kia Niro?
Earlier this year, Kia issued a recall for Niro hybrid and plug-in hybrid (Kia Niro PHEV) models due to a potential short circuit that could result in engine fires, as announced by the NHTSA on Monday.
What are the disadvantages of the Kia Niro?
While the Niro's electric efficiency and stylish design are definite advantages, there are also some drawbacks to consider, such as slow charging speed, limited cargo space, and a less powerful engine than some of its competitors.
How reliable is the Niro?
The fresh new hybrid by Kia received a perfect reliability score of 5.0 out of 5.0 and an owner satisfaction rating of 3.0 out of 5.0.
Which Kia Niro model is best?
The Kia Niro hybrid (or the pure-electric Kia Niro EV) will be a better option for most private buyers. In terms of trim level, the mid-level Kia Niro 3 strikes us as the sweet spot in the range. The top-spec Kia Niro 4 has some very desirable kit but it's also a lot of money...

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-11
- VIN: KNDCE3LG4N5
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I received a recall notice for my 2022 Kia Niro EV regarding the safety plugs of the high-voltage battery. I have now scheduled three different appointments with Kia of Lincolnwood to perform this recall, and each time I have been turned away with a different excuse (lack of part, lack of tools, performing recall will take too many hours). The last time I asked to speak with the service manager, who assured me he would take care of this and I would be able to come in on Friday 10/11. Given how many times I've been turned away, I called the day before to confirm, and the manager said he would call me back and never did. Repeated attempts to contact him or the dealership that day went unanswered. I would like help getting this dealership to perform the recall. Given the risk of fire or crash, I am not comfortable driving this vehicle or charging it. I am attaching copies of both the recall and the last work order I was given, where it shows once again I was asked to come back another day.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-04
- VIN: KNDCE3LGXN5
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: In re: Manufacturer Recall Number SC314, NHTSA Recall Number 24V358 The Kia dealership (Aloha Kia Leeward, Waipahu, Hawai‘i) is imposing an unreasonable delay for this safety recall. Dealer was contacted in mid-July to schedule recall service. Dealer said it had to order the part. After not hearing from the dealer for two weeks, dealer was contacted on August 2 and recall service was scheduled for August 27 (claiming that was the first available appt.) Dealer kept the vehicle for 5 hours that day, then said the service could not be performed. Dealer said it would contact me to reschedule. After leaving messages and not hearing back from dealer, I went in person on 9-4-24. Dealer could not schedule recall service until October 7. Because this is a recall for safety issues, this repeated delay is unacceptable. I wish to put this complaint in the record regarding the disregard for vehicle safety by Aloha Kia Leeward of Waipahu, Hawai‘i. Thank you.

- Summary: I took my car to the Dublin California Kia dealer because my car would not start or allow me to open the doors. When I had it towed to the dealer they said that the lithium ion battery under the rear seat had swollen. They said they would first address the recall for the (HCA) recall number 23V534. They completed the recall and was given the okay to replace the battery. Car was in the shop for 2 weeks. When I got the car back I didn't drive for 4 days. When I went to drive the car it would not start again. I had the car towed to Kia Vacaville, California shop. They informed me that the recall was performed incorrectly at the first dealer and that the new battery under the rear seat was swollen. The car has been in the shop for 2 weeks again. I am very concerned that this is a dangerous problem and do not feel safe driving this vehicle.

- Summary: Kia issued a recall warning dated September 29, 2023 regarding a fire hazard in our car. The recall stated that remedy was not available. After two months of no remedy from Kia and failure of Kia's Customer Care Center to respond to our requests for help, we went to the Kia dealer in Van Nuys, California to inspect the car to ascertain if it was still safe. The dealer refused to inspect or take any remedial action. To date there has been nothing from Kia to correct the problem. However, the 2023 and 2024 Kia Niro Hybrids do not have the fire hazard problem; these years were NOT in the recall warning. Kia should have offered a remedy by now since the problem was obviously corrected in the next two years.

This has happened at highway speeds as well as city street speeds. This happened 4 times on a 50 mile drive today, creating a very dangerous road situation. I now feel the car is unsafe to drive, as an accident is waiting to happen. I have contacted the dealership where car was purchased and am waiting to hear back from them.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-06
- VIN: KNDCC3LG1N5
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: The chrome colored plastic strip that runs along the dash reflects the sun into your eyes and is blinding. Sometimes I have to drive with my hand blocking the beams of light because it’s that blinding. This happens mostly in the summer but has happened in other seasons. I was going to paint it or put stickers on it to block it although my car is a rental and don’t want to void anything so I drive with my hand blocking the reflection.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-08-01
- VIN: KNDCC3LGXN5
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Vehicle enters power limited (turtle) mode randomly. While driving under normal conditions, with ample battery charge and range, the “turtle mode” warning indicator chimes. Sometimes it is brief and no noticeable power loss is experienced. However, often power will be lost and the vehicle must limp off the road to restart if it doesn’t resume on its own. This problem arises at varying speeds and ambient conditions. Our safety is at risk because you never know when it will happen. Losing power on the highway and making an emergency stop is clearly a safety hazard. The dealership has not been able to replicate this problem.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-27
- VIN: KNDCE3LG3N5
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: The vehicle has failed to start on 3 occasions and needed to be jumped. When towed to the dealership they’ve been unable to find any issues.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-27
- VIN: KNDCC3LG2N5
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: When driving with ACC engaged in traffic at a speed below the target speed the vehicle will sometimes speed up. This seems to happen when the ACC radar loses the return from the vehicle ahead -- for example when when a ahead vehicle changes lanes in stop-and-go traffic, I think this may happen if the side of the vehicle merging into the lane is relatively "clean" and most of the radar energy is reflected away. When this happens the car will start accelerating to the target speed, in rush hour traffic the spacing between vehicles can be quite tight and there is little time to respond to the sudden acceleration. This has also happened at an approach to a roundabout where there is a sharp turn before entering the roundabout. The vehicle is available for inspection. The problem has happened several times and I'm often able to predict when it will happen, but it has not been independently reproduced. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer (the problem was reported to the dealer who sold the car, they brushed it off and could not provide a means of reporting it to the manufacturer). There were no warnings or indication of an equipment failure.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-05
- VIN: KNDCC3LG2N5
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The car has chrome trim on the dashboard that can cause blinding reflections and which also reflects in the side windows making it hard to see the side mirrors. This is a design flaw (not strictly a failure or malfunction) and the vehicle is available for inspection. The risk is that it impedes the driver's vision and the ability to use the mirrors and sometimes to read the display. Impeding the driver's vision can result in a crash. This problem has been reported by many owners on various forums, but I have not had it corroborated.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-07
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: KNDCC3LG6N5
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The contact owned a 2022 Kia Niro. The contact stated that while his wife was driving in a parking lot at approximately 5 MPH, she drove over a curb to avoid a vehicle that was reversing. The vehicle crashed into the roadway aggressively after coming down from the curb and the contact's wife inadvertently depressed the accelerator pedal. The vehicle accelerated to approximately 40 MPH in a straight line and then crashed into four parked vehicles in a chain reaction, crashing into the rear end of the first parked vehicle. The contact stated that his wife was not aware of any warning lights being illuminated. The vehicle came to a stop on its own due to the crash's impact. The damage to the contact's vehicle was a crushed grill, hood, and fenders, all the way to the windshield. The contact's wife suffered a fracture to her C2 vertebrae on her neck, a fracture to her right foot, a small laceration to her left knee. The contact suffered bruises to her chest and shoulders from the seat belt. The contact's wife was transported to the ER by ambulance. The driver's side front air and side air bags had been deployed. The contact stated that the police were on the scene and filed a report. The contact said that the vehicle had been towed to an impound lot. The vehicle had not been diagnosed by a dealer or independent mechanic. The contact stated that the insurance provider requested that the vehicle be released to them. The contact stated that the vehicle was equipped with front collision avoidance technology which had apparently failed to stop the vehicle. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 1,500.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-25
- VIN: KNDCD3LDXN5
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: The dash chrome trim running across the dashboard reflects the sun and blinds the driver. It is so reflective it makes driving almost impossible. This needs to be addressed by Kia as it blinds the driver bad enough that it's only a matter of time till this will cause an accident that will cause harm or death of the cars occupants.

I helped my daughter select her first car and she absolutely adores it! She was insistent on getting a hybrid, so we test drove a few options including the Honda Insight, Accord, and Clarity, as well as the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, my 2014.5 Camry hybrid, and an ICE RAV4 from 2007. While they all had their pros, the main con was that they felt too big for her 5'6

I have driven over 14k miles without any issues. The car gets an impressive 50 mpg, a combination of city and highway driving. The car handles corners well and I love the technology with Android auto. I read up on the 10-year, 100k warranty and was pleased to find out that it includes the lithium storage batteries. I believe that a hybrid is the way to go, as it allows for long-distance driving and the convenience of quick fill-ups. This is actually my third KIA and I have had no problems with any of them. As a retired person, I enjoy driving around the country and exploring new places. The car's less than 11-gallon tank can go over 500 miles on a single fill-up. Although the suspension is a bit stiff, the car still handles and corners well. The brakes could use some improvement, but I hope they stop in time during an emergency. The storage batteries are warranted for 10 years or 100k miles. I highly recommend taking one for a ride, as they have a lot of technology and a nice-looking interior.

I absolutely love driving my EX Premium Kia Niro! It's so fuel-efficient without even trying. However, I do wish that some of the great features on the car were more user-friendly. When you get in the car, you have to press a lot of buttons to get it back to where it was before you turned it off. The Auto high beams work great, but it's important to remember to turn on the feature. The Auto-Hold is also a great feature, but again, it's important to remember to turn it on. While the lane assist works great, it can sometimes drop out on a curve. Additionally, the glossy front dash and metal trim can reflect the sun in your eyes. Despite these minor issues, I absolutely love the vented seats! However, I do wish that the seat/steering wheel heating/ventilated buttons were placed in a more convenient location. Unfortunately, the center console has no power outlet, and there are none in the back seat either, which is surprising for a premium trim. The power up/down windows are only reserved for the two front windows, unlike my Sienna where they are all power. The passenger seat also lacks a power seat, and there is no seat back pocket on the driver's seat. Furthermore, there is no spare tire, only a repair kit and a compressor. On the bright side, the premium sound system is absolutely amazing and rocks the house down! While the car may cost $10K more than a straight gas car, the fuel savings are definitely worth it. Overall, I love my cute little car and it's just what I need for retirement!
-
Awesome vehicle! It has tight gas mileage and amazing performance. I couldn't be happier.
-
It's great to see that you have a good looking car that gets 50 miles/g and has a lot of iPhone functions!

I recently had to have my 2021 Kia Niro LS towed from Sutherlin, OR to Eugene, OR due to a camshaft problem, which is the same issue I had with my 2018 Niro. Unfortunately, there is no dealership in Sutherlin, but thankfully, Kia Roadside Assistance was able to help me out. However, I have had some trouble with the dealership in the past, as it took them quite a while to fix my 2018 Niro. Despite this, I must say that my 2013 Kia Soul never had any problems. As a senior citizen, I was a bit inconvenienced by the situation, but I'm hopeful that the dealership will be able to diagnose and fix the issue with my car soon. In the meantime, I'm grateful for the support of my friend who helped me get home safely. Thank you for your understanding.

I've been driving this car for 3 years now and it has an impressive fuel efficiency of 543 Mpg. However, I've been experiencing some technical issues lately and unfortunately, Kia is no longer covering the repairs since it has exceeded 60k miles. Despite this setback, I have taken this car on some amazing adventures, from California to New York and back, and it has performed well. Overall, it's a good car with some minor annoyances.

I was hoping to use this car for my daily errands around town. I had read that the 2019 Kia Niro had an average city rating of 51 mpg, but unfortunately, I have only been getting an average of 25 mpg for short trips (such as my 3-mile roundtrip to work). For slightly longer commutes (like my 12-mile roundtrip to school), I have been getting 39 mpg, even though I have been driving very conservatively. I have noticed that the instant fuel economy is 9.8 mpg and I have had to drive very slowly, causing a line of cars to form behind me. I am planning to check the gas mileage manually to see if there is an instrumentation problem. It seems like the engine is being used when the electric motor should be running the vehicle at slow speeds. I took the car to the dealer to have it checked out, but they found nothing wrong with it. While I am not sure if I will keep this car, I am definitely not happy with the Kia Niro.

I recently reviewed the LX with standard package. While the car is great for city driving, the cargo space is quite small. I was only able to fit 2-24 pack bottled water and 2-24 pack Pepsi, and the rest of my groceries struggled to fit. It may not be the best option for big grocery trips for a family of 5, as even my compact Hyundai Accent has twice the trunk space of the Kia Niro. Additionally, it may not be the best option for Ikea trips, as a compact car would be able to carry much more. The acceleration is also poor in comparison to other SUVs of the same size, and you will have to really step on it to reach the normal tollway speed of 70-75 mph here in North Texas. Furthermore, there is no extra charger/usb port for back seat passengers, unlike other new vehicles. The car does come with a Sirius package, but it's only free for 3 months, and there is no other entertainment option. The 3 seats in the back are quite small, and it may be a tight squeeze for 3 normal weight teenagers. While this may not be the best option for a road trip or a family of 5, it is still a great car for city driving. It's important to do your research before making a purchase, and I would encourage you to shop around. However, the warranty for Hyundai/Kia is quite good. Best of luck!
